Iskra eir Baelsar: lore dump
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, since people are getting interested in her, lets start with some back story. (apologies as this gets a bit long)
@primamchorus @zylphiacrowley @dragonsongmakhali @kanehon since you all expressed interest.
Iskra was a simple farm girl from a remote area between Dalmasca and the Skatay range. Living a fairly pleasant life learning to live off the land and was a natural hunter, learning some things from the Viera who would travel down from the mountains.
When the Garlean Empire started their second attempt to get to Nagxia and pushing into Dalmasca, a small unit of Garleans that had gotten lost came across the farm Iskra's family lived on. They had no idea who these soldiers were as news of the conflict starting with Dalmasca hadn't reached very far yet, so they provided food and shelter for these lost people until their main host could recover them.
Dalmascan scouts witness the farmers giving shelter to their enemy and marked them as collaborators. While Iskra was out on a hunt, the scouting party attacked and razed the farmstead. Seeing the smoke from the burning fields, Iskra rushed home just in time to see her parents cut down trying to defend their home. Something insider her broke. Rather than be consumed by her emotions they were instead shut off. With cold efficiency, she hunted and slaughtered every Dalmsacan that attacked her home. Only then did she allow herself to grieve.
Drawn by the fires, a Garlean patrol craft lands and investigates finding the young woman sitting on what remained of the stoop of her house with a pile of Dalmascan corpses piled up nearby. While telling them of the events that transpired she learns of the building war with Dalmasca. Iskra asks to join them to enact vengeance on the nation that killed her family.
While serving as a conscript, Iskra quickly found her calling when placed on an intelligence mission. The results of which caught the eye of a visiting legatus, Gaius van Baelsar, who has Iskra transferred to the XIV legion. With even more successful missions under he belt, Gaius devises a strategy not only get Iskra a shot at the Frumentarium Academy but a push to the head of the line. Gaius formally adopts Iskra as his daughter. With fully citizenship and the personal recommendation of a renown legatus, Iskra is accepted and heads to the academy in Garlemald.
Academy life is difficult as she finds her self often held to different standards than her pure-blood Garlean counterparts as well as political meddling from those that think she doesn't belong. Despite this she still managed to graduate at the head of her class, however she gets assigned as a data analyst operating from the consulate in Kugane. Politics.
While in Kugane, the consulate found itself with a leek. Iskra managed to track the leak to a food stall vendor in the nearby markets. This vendor was actually a Doman Shinobi attempting to get the Garleans removed from Hingashi. She befriended the man, never letting slip she was on to him and once he let his guard down she slit his throat. The brass, being thoroughly impressed, finally make her a field operative (which I've talked a little about before in [this] post). Finding herself back in Dalmasca as part of a new counter insurgency unit weeding out the more dug in resistance fighters. It's here that she first meets a Turali man named Thiago who is attached to another unit. They only cross paths a couple times but she finds him obnoxious.
Before her tour is complete, she gets pulled from the field by Gaius and is placed on a new long term deep cover assignment to infiltrate Ala Mhigo and prepare it for invasion...
If you managed to get through all this, thank you for reading my cobbled together backstory of Kabniel's mother.

The Pedophile Hunts in Progressive Spaces Were an Alt-Right Operation to Cause a Rift in Our Communities.
So, I need to talk about something for a minute that has been REALLY bothering me even though the drama about it is pretty much over. I'm stirring it back up because it's not sitting right on my soul. I know I'm gonna get flack for this but I don't care.
A few weeks ago someone started referring to an MTS user as a pedophile because he posted a picture of a teen sim in their underwear. However, the problem was that it was pretty much immediately a reason that he was targeted for a harassment campaign against him.
Which, no, we're not going to ruin a man's life over this. If you think I'm a bad person for that- the unfollow button is above. Block me. We Are Not Friends. Goodbye.
This isn't even about The Sims community, or at least not just about it. You've been tricked. I'm sorry but you have. This is obviously bigger than this ONE small drama but it's obvious that this is being used as a manipulation tactic on a macro level to create distrust and a way to break down people easily. And it's specifically henious since it's targeting queer people with propaganda which has historically been used to demonize them.
This sudden fear of pedophiles was a targeted effort by the far right to sow discord in the queer community and I can prove it.
Firstly, 4chan and other online arenas have been doing missions like this for YEARS. Some are successful and others aren't. They were responsible for the discourse surrounding whether or not being "bisexual" made you transphobic.
Second and MOST importantly, I NEED you to know about the alt-right group curiously named Gays Against Groomers. This group was created to undermine the queer community. They've regularly supported anti-lgbt bills and targeted schools. This group is a psyop.
The MO of these sorts of movements has ALWAYS been packaging harmful content in a way which would resonate with queer social media spheres to get them to claim it as their own and the propagate it. This is a MARKETING company. This was a MARKETING STRATEGY.
When you repeat a lot of these things, using the specific verbiage that you do, you're following the plans of people like Jamee Michell.
They specifically targeted areas that had large groups of young impressionable queer people who wouldn't already be familiar with the tactic of equating gays with pedophiles so that they would create a sort of panopticon. This is what has caused this "obsession with pedophiles" this was not an accident.
Hyper-vigilance of groomers, a hatred of pedophiles, was the place to start and then creating a ever-changing definition of what a 'groomer' was is just a long play to make things like 'being a drag queen' a stand in for pedophilia.
For people around you, in your fandom communities who are 'progressive' but seem overly obsessed with grooming. Fandom spaces are often targeted as they're overwhelmingly queer. We know for a fact that the proship debate came specifically from this sort of messaging.
Keep an eye on them. They might not be who you think they are. And if you're mad at me for saying this?
I'm sorry but I'm not afraid to align myself with some potentially terrible people to protect queer people from being falsely accused.

Brandon Sanderson and his "genre-shaping" exaggeration
Let me start by a disclaimer: I actually enjoy Brandon's books, most of them get five stars from me. So please take it under consideration while reading. It's a criticism, not hating.
This post was something I've been thinking on writing for a long, looong time. Ever since Brandon took over The Wheel of Time (which is how I know of him) I got into reading his books, and enjoyed them. Then, over the years, I've read many articles praising him more and more, each book indicing newer superlatives, so when this year I've started re-reading his books (so I can read whole Cosmere in one go, awaiting final installment) I found myself disagreeing with most of them.
To sum it up, mostly he's being called genre-shaping because of:
Unusual, never seen before magic systems, that no other writer tops
Amazing wordlbuilding that also doesn't have anyone else standing up to him (some even call him "new Tolkien")
Characters that are complex, easy to remember, even easier to love and follow
Outstanding writing style
Ideas that no one thought before of, showing that fantasy still has something new to offer
I'll try to address every one of those, as to not get too tangled in my own thoughts.
Let's start with magic system. Now, Brandon's magic systems are unusual, that's for sure. They're complex, they're reaching into quite new ways of using world around us, they always have a high price, and boyyy, the rules they have! They're not, though, above some of the other magic systems I've seen in the literature. The Wheel of Time has just as complex system, with many new ways of using The Power appearing with each new volume (even before Brandon took over). N.K. Jemisin created her own system, that (in my own opinion, of course) is truly something we've never seen before. Trudi Canavan, with her blood magic, was also onto something that was refreshing and new. And don't get me started on Naomi Novik or Susan Dennard. What I'm trying to say - Brandon's magic systems are good, but they're hardly antyhing above average. Are they compelling? Yes. But did they change anything in the fantasy genre? Not really.
Cosmere, in its own huuuuge scope, created a whole plethora of worlds, each unique in its own way. Worldhoppers and idea of visiting different worlds stirred readers along the world, stating they've never read anything like this. Except, they could've. Because that's what Le Guin's Hainish Cycle is about. Each world having its own multicultural countries? We've got that in The Wheel of Time, in Eriksson's Malazan Book of Fallen, and in many other fantasy books (even those written by YA authors). So far, Brandon hasn't created anything original enough to call him another Tolkien, no one also took an inspiration from any creature he crated, and, sorry to say, with so many books being loosely tied to Cosmere it's hard to treat them as a whole. While Easter Egg hunting may be interesting for some, that does feel a little pushed. Personally, I dislike the fact that books I've read years ago as a stand-alone novels, are currently "Cosmere novels" with new content. Looking at it without any personal bias I can see those few ties, but it looks more like a marketing strategy, than actual "original" idea.
Now we get to my main pet peeve when it comes to Brandon's supposed brilliancy - his characters. I'm a big fan of character-driven stories, hence The Wheel of Time is my all-time fav, but Brandon... well, he doesn't know very well what to do with his characters. Take, for example, Mistborn. While there are two or three main characters that undergo a change, everyone else is a cutboard, two-dimensional stand-in that doesn't get much depth. I was truly intersted in Elend's advisors, but through two books I couldn't say more about them than "well, this one is smart, and this one is a coward". Also under his pen WoT's characters lost their depth, some of them becoming a caricature of themselves. I tried not to judge him by this, because, honestly, it's extremely hard to take over a story started by someone else, but this trend continues. Take Elantris - there are three characters I can think of, that were nicely written. Everyone else was just in the background, moving almost as if on strings. This isn't a bad writing - most of them were entertaining, lovely characters we could feel for, but when it comes to character-building (especially for characters that are not main characters) Brandon's writing is very, very average. Joe Abercrombie or Brent Weeks are much, much better in this regard.
While we're on topic of writing, I'm a fan of Brandon's style. He can easily convey hard topics, can keep you on your toes, is very quotable, and, in all honesty, his books are somewhere in between high and B-tier fantasy writing that doesn't force you to give 100% attention to what you're reading, but also doesn't allow you to skim easily over the text. It's a great balance, but you can't call it a penman mastership never seen before. It's a trait he's sharing with authors like Joe Abercrombie, Brent Weeks, Mark Lawrence or N.K. Jemisin. But it's nowhere near levels of Tolkien, Le Guin, Sapkowski or Rothfuss. Their style, their use of language or creating new terms is on a different level.
New ideas is a touchy topic, because (don't feel attacked) most people don't read outside of their chosen fiction genre. They don't even go outside of sub-genre. Which is why ideas that were introduced somewhere else (like Le Guin's ethnologists going around planets to get a feeling of their magic, politic and geograpy; or many science-fiction books where main hero goes to other planets for specific thing, like Stainless Steel Rat by Harry Harrison) or plot-points (different takes on "how to prevent a war/obliteration", even on philosophical side), or even religion that is always a Big Thing in each of the books (also A Thing, e.g. Mark Lawrence's books or Malazan), or a character that seems to be the main character, but dies (GRRM)... Brandon just takes those ideas and shows us them in his own way, but the archetype? It's still there.
So while I would say that Brandon is an amazing writer, I wouldn't say he's a genre-shaping wonder. He plays around with the same toys as everyone else, and manages to sometimes get better, sometimes worse when compared to other authors. He definitely has bigger following, a true devoted fanbase, and lots of Tor's marketing went his way. He's also an extremely prolific author, who doesn't always produce high quality books (Skyward and The Reckoners being an example).
tl;dr he's an amazing writer, who has lots of good stuff going on, but originality isn't his strongest suit. And that's ok. Good book is always going to be a good book, even if it's about Tortured Boy Who Saves The World for the Nth time.

Real question that I’d love your expert answer on.
The Winchesters was terribly marketed and from my understanding, that is the role of the producers/showrunner to create the elevator speech and marketing materials for the series, correct?
The way TW was sold to the audience seemed unexciting, unclear and didn’t match up with how the show ended. It’s like they weren’t really sure who the audience was supposed to be so the messages were so general that I don’t think it targeted or resonated with anyone. (My marketing prof always said when you try to target everyone, you appeal to no one.).
Just like the majority of the fandom, the concept was poorly conceived and even more poorly executed.
Regardless—- Now that we know how the prequel turned sequel played out, (1) who would you have targeted the message to, and (2) how would you have described the series to make it make sense to that audience.
I’d love to hear how you would have sold it to get people watch it.
While you are correct that producers/showrunner create elevator pitches, the marketing materials are created by an agency outside the studio. The agency hires Promotion Producers to develop campaign strategies and create promotional materials such as trailers and commercials according to set of specifications. Where those specifications come from can be good questions. Ideally, they are from showrunners, but often are from Senior Producer or from the studios' own marketing team.
So in The Winchesters, the Promotion Producers are given scenes from the show's producers with ideas of the show's message. But the Promotion Producers have to work closely with the studios marketing team and often campaign ideas don't sync up. Think back to Supernatural trailers, half the time they are completely misdirects on the instructions by studio's marketing team because they believe it's more interesting that way.
Promotion Producers know there are 4 major demographics called "the quadrant" and realistically they can only target one, maybe two if they're lucky.
Tumblr media
Since Supernatural has "males over 25", WB may have been trying to get the "females under 25" with The Winchesters by going the Buffy-lite vibe while also trying to attract "females over 25" with Jensen Ackles's Dean-the-narrator.
"I’d love to hear how you would have sold it to get people watch it."
Well, for starters, even though it's a John and Mary Winchester story don't call it a John and Mary Winchester story because SPN fans already knows that story. Instead do what they did 18 years ago when they promoted Supernatural as X-Files meet Hardy boys. Focus on the spooky atmosphere and the characters searching for monsters in the sewer. This gets audiences asking why these young people are hunting for things that go bump in the night because why would anybody in their right mind do that? That is the hook. Have John mention that hunting monsters and demons is dangerous and ask why would Mary do it. Hint at her motives. Is it for revenge? Does she belong to a secret society? When she mentioned her father in passing, is she from a line of hunters? Show action shots of the 4 young people fighting monsters and make it look like they're losing. Then have an ending shot of one of them looking bloody, triumphant, and mad.
And don't call it a romance story, Supernatural was never about romance. X Files was never about romance either and fans went nuts over the chemistry between Scully and Mulder. If young John and Mary have chemistry, great, let the fans ship them first and then go for the romance.

I AM UNWELL.
The House of Flame and Shadow cover? Beautiful. Never saw gold coming but I am obsessed.
The FIVE different bonus chapters?! Intriguing, but you won’t catch me buying five different editions of the same book just to have them lmao.
A Bryce and Danika chapter?! WHAT DOES IT MEAN? I feel like this will be some sort of flashback and it will probably hurt.
A Nesta, Bryce and Azriel bonus chapter?! Good lord. Including Az here was a genius marketing strategy I’ll give BB that. I feel like it won’t actually confirm anything (ships, future MCs) but it will be dissected to hell and back by both sides of the ship wars anyways lol.
I need Hunt and Bryce, and Ruhn and Lidia to all end up happy and safe. I feel like both of these couples are about to face some trauma. Ruhn and Lidia especially.
I cannot decide who I think the woman on the cover is. I’m getting Hel (Norse goddess) vibes with the half of her face sort of withered and the snake (Jormungandr, anyone??)  The black blood/eye is giving super valg vibes and the clawed nails?! The marks on her arms?! I feel like there’s so many little hints in this cover art and I love it.
I CAN’T WAIT FOR JANUARY. I NEED THIS BOOK NOW.

Character questions - Part 3
Another character post answering questions from that one ask game, yippee
---
» What flavor would your character say their personality is?
Vyrm - sweet and savory. When I think about him in regards to flavor, I think of something like beef stew or roasted potatoes, but with a bit of sweetness to it, and I think Vyrm would agree. The smell would be more on the subtle side, but the taste would become very clear once you bite into it. Does that make sense? Pretend that it does
Grimm - spicy and sweet or fruity. Spicy doesn't need much explanation, it matches his personality perfectly. But there is a sweetness to him that only becomes clear when you get to know him. There's also the fact that I imagine that's kind of what he smells like, a very pleasant fruity kind of smell.
» Would your character prefer baking, cooking or mixing drinks?
Vyrm - neither of them does well in the kitchen, and out of the two, Vyrm is definitely worse. But I think if he had to choose, he would gravitate towards baking. Not only there's less pressure there if he only sticks to recipes that can be considered snacks, but it's also a great bonding activity for him and Grimm, and even the rest of the family. Also, I've seen some people compare baking to science, so he would find himself more at home doing that. Whether or not the results of that science would be edible is another story.
Grimm - I mentioned baking being compared to science, and in that same vein, cooking is more like art. And for that reason I think it would be something Grimm finds more appealing (not that he wouldn't absolutely love baking with Vyrm, he would). He's much more of an artistic type than his husband, so I can see him eventually figuring out the secret to cooking well and learning to love it. Though I can also picture him really enjoying mixing drinks. He definitely has more experience with that, if only due to his affinity for teas and especially his history of drinking. But cooking is more practical for him so I'm still going with that.
» How big is your character's appetite?
Vyrm - fairly big, he can eat a lot at once and he very much enjoys it. It's mostly due to his nature as a wyrm, eating all you can once in a while was the survival strategy for them, and the calories and nutrients were essential to gain the energy needed to survive the harsh conditions of their environment. Things changed a bit for Vyrm after changing forms, his body is now much smaller and so needs less food intake, but he also went through a very long period of being severely underweight. Right after his hibernation, he had to adjust to eating food at all, and once that happened, he started eating a lot, to the point it could be considered overeating. He had to gain back his weight, and the decades of avoiding eating only made his appetite bigger. After moving to Dirtmouth, he continued that habit for a while until he gained enough weight where his health wasn't a concern. Now that he has a lot more fat on his body used primarily as heat regulation and extra padding around his organs, he still needs to eat a fair bit to maintain it, even more than he would in his homeland due to the colder climate of Hallownest. He is a bit overweight, but not to the point where it's a concern, and he was able to develop a diet that allowed him to sustain his body while also not increasing his weight further. He dedicates some of his weekly routine to going out and hunting, so that is when he eats the most since raw meat is essential for his diet (sometimes he's able to eat it at home if Hornet brings something home or he buys it at the market, but he does enjoy the exercise part of those hunts). Outside of that, he eats small meals here and there to enrich his diet, so his large appetite is perhaps not that obvious if you only know him from his Dirtmouth activities.
Grimm - in theory, he could modify his body so that he doesn't need food at all. There may have been a point in his life where that was the case, but since then he allowed himself to properly consume it. He really wanted to taste it, plus he saw eating as a social activity that he wanted to engage in, and since his appetite isn't very big, he made sure he doesn't need a lot of food to gain energy and support the rest of the body. Things stayed the same after he settled down with Vyrm, out of the two he's definitely the one with a smaller appetite. In fact, that trait of his helped Vyrm find balance in his own diet - they often eat together, and so they both eat portions of similarly small size. For Grimm that is the norm, and thanks to it, Vyrm found it easier to develop the habit of eating less between his hunts. As for blood, it is not as much part of his diet as it is "nourishment" for his organs which lets them run for a while longer. I imagine it gets absorbed into his body as he drinks it instead of being treated as actual food, so I don't count it here.

Alright, so I’ve seen a couple of hot takes that there is no queerbaiting in the Loki show (and what’s even funnier that mcu has never queerbaited) because Loki is canonically queer… and like… alright so there’s no queerbaiting in spn because technically speaking cas is queer? Queerbaiting is a marketing strategy so even if we ignore what’s in the show, the chemistry between actors and some truly insane acting choices, the Loki show is queerbaiting because of how it was marketed, and especially how the first season was marketed. Before the show aired we were told that Loki was going to have multiple love interests, we were told that sophia di martino was playing loki (and told so in a way that suggested that she was playing ‘our’ loki). There is a part of the soundtrack that is literally named ‘lokius’. Even before this season started airing the marketing heavily focused on the relationship between Loki and mobius, reassuring us that Our Loki would be with Our mobius.
And alright I’ll give them that they confirmed that loki is bi/pan in episode three and let’s ignore that the confirmation was two seconds long, pretty vague, had no impact on the plot nor characters and wasn’t mentioned ever again. Ok. Fine. Honestly my much bigger gripe is with how they handled Loki’s gender.
Which is to say that they fucked up. Despite Loki being gender-fluid in the comics and despite how the show was marketed, the text of the show heavily suggests that both our Loki and Sylvie are cis. Ok so the arrest report in the credit says: “sex: fluid”. Which is completely different from saying (and showing) that Loki is gender-fluid. What is shown in the show (or rather in the credits, which let’s be real almost no one bothers to read) is that Loki’s sex is fluid… which yes he’s a shapeshifter. That’s not representation, they don’t say that Loki is trans, the fans can read it that way, but disney doesn’t have to fear backlash from conservatives because Loki in the show is not gender-fluid, he’s a shapeshifter (who doesn’t shapeshift for some reason). Sylvie literally says that she was born a “goddess of mischief”, every single other Loki is shocked by the idea of a ‘female version’ of them. It’s supposed to be a #girlboss moment but it’s not! It reads like every Loki is a (cis) man! And sure you can have a head canon that they’re shocked that Sylvie is exclusively presenting as a woman, or that Sylvie is not cis but obviously was born a goddess. But that’s not what’s in the text. From episode one when talking about the variant they’re hunting everyone in the tva uses ‘he’ pronoun when referring to them. Why? All they know is that they’re hunting a loki, so if Loki is gender-fluid (or even if their ‘sex is fluid’ as referred to in the show) why assume that the variant they’re looking for is a he? (Probably for the extremely obvious plot twist when Sylvie shows up). I’m actually so mad about this, gender-fluid representation is so rare and they took a canonically gender-fluid character and did what?
There’s so much queerbaiting in the show! And they know what they’re doing! It’s not a coincidence that they’re leaning so much into loki and mobius’ banter! It’s not a coincidence that in the First episode (!) of season two we get a scene in which Loki before pruning himself goes “if I don’t make it back, I…” which is meant to sound like a beginning of a confession! Which was a beginning of a confession last season when it was directed towards sylvie! It’s almost exactly the same scene! But let’s be real, he probably was going to say something like: “if I don’t make it back, find sylvie”.
Why are we still getting this treatment in 2023? (because it clearly pays well) If they didn’t want to give us good queer rep, why market it as such? Loki is queer in the comics, he wasn’t canonically queer in the movies (despite the immaculate vibes). They could have left it alone. I’m sure that many people still would have shipped Loki and mobius because of the incredible chemistry between actors and (let’s be real) that just how fandoms work, but that wouldn’t count as queerbaiting, because again that’s a marketing strategy.

Another one! 🤭.
I read your reblog and I'm here to ask about Nina in thg! I asked this to other mutuals so... What about her? Can she win? And her District..etc ❤️
Thank you so much for the question, Flor!🤍 and sorry for the long ass reply, but I got a bit carried away lmao
Nina would be district 9, grain. I think her reaping would be just bad luck: she’d be reaped on the last year she can be, at the age of eighteen. Everyone’s sure she won’t make it, not only because she comes from a poor district, but also because physically she wouldn’t stand a chance.
The thing is, Nina plays the games. And that’s what brings her to victory at the end. From the very moment she steps on the train, her brain would start working incessantly, trying to make up a good strategy. Briefly, her strategy would be being invisible. She figures that if she keeps a low profile, the other tributes won’t consider her a danger and won’t go for her first. For example during the short training, although she’s quite skilled with a knife, she only focuses on the things she can’t really do. She knows winning the Capitol’s favour would play a big part in her surviving, but it would expose her to a greater risk, so that’s something she gives up. She never just watched the games, she studied them, looked for patterns, and tried to keep herself educated by trading bakery stuff for books at the black market, so she knows a lot about edible and poisonous plants, basic survival skills, etc. This allows her to have more chances at surviving on her own.
Her strategy would work: during the games, people almost forget about her. They think she’ll just die at some point. Even the Gamemakers don’t bother messing with her, they focus on breaking the alliances, creating suspense. Nina’s not that interesting. This allows her to stay hidden and watch (she’d figure how the arena works, the various alliances, when it’s safer to move, and keep count of the deaths).
People would only notice her when the games are almost over, like there are 4 or 5 tributes left and she’s one of them. I think she’d manage to keep her hands clean until the end, when there’s just two of them left. But as soon as she hears the signal that another tribute has died and there’s only another one left, things would change drastically, and she’d start an actual hunt. There would be a physical fight, probably with a career, and she’d have a hard time with that. But again, she’s skilled with a knife, and desperation would make her unhinged.
Basically, she’d be the most unexpected victor of the Hunger Games. A few years after winning the Games, chances are she becomes a rebel.

thought about this while listening to 'Bigmouth Strikes Back' and I HAVE to share it somewhere
Lamina & Joan of Arc. But not movie!Lamina
Book Lamina. BOOK. LAMINA.
Let me explain.
So, Lamina in the book is first percieved as a weak, teary and very pathetic girl who would not even last 3 seconds in that arena. As the days go by, everyone stops paying attention to her, even her mentor, who's supposed to guide her and promote her (i hate that concept). She's on her own, and she needs to survive by her own methods and strategies.
She's a lumberjack, so she's very skilled with an ax and with climbing. She knows this and realizes she can use that on her advantage. So, she continues to portray her role as a "weak and teary girl" while ploting her survival strategy.
When she kills Marcus, she realizes she's actually going to play along with what's meant for herb to do: kill. Because, if Lamina doesn't become the hunter, then she will become the pray. And that's exactly what she becomes. Another pray, hunted and killed.
In the end, it doesn't matter if that poor girl from District 7 dressed in a potatoe sack dress and with red puffy eyes killed a guy. It doesn't matter that she played her role in the games correctly. It's not important. She's just another victim. Just because she's district. She's born out of the Capitol. Her life was going to be miserable even if she wasn't reaped. She had probably been told that since she was a kid.
And when the pack goes after her, it's not even crucial that she became a real contender after 20 minutes in that arena, going from 'pathetic and useless' to 'lethal and marketable'. This twist of events it's not important in the slightest because Coral is stronger. Coral and Mizzen and Tanner are more, and much stronger than her alone. By herself. Lamina dies not just by the fact that she was cornered, but because she never had a chance to even continue.
A future was not something she was meant to have. Not even if she worked SO HARD for it. Not even if she killed Coral and Mizzen in the spot. She was going to die. She was supposed to die. And she was going to die as another unfortunate soul trapped in the unfair Hunger Games.
Now, what the hell does Joan of Arc has to do with a basic analysis of a side character from a book? Everything. Absolutely everything.
Joan of Arc was a woman (in fact, a teenager) who did all she was "told" to do in order to save her life and the lifes of the french. To save France from the unfair and devastating destiny that was caused by the British invading her country. She was meant to do it because she'd been told that since she was thirteen. So she saved France. All undercovered and with sixteen years old. She did all of that.
But that was heresy. In the end, it never mattered if she saved France. If she made someone a king. Nothing of that was even considered as she was tied to a pole and burned alive while everyone else witnessed it. All because she went against the 'Holy rules of the Lord'. All because she had done what she was told to do. She did everything she had to do in order to keep everyone AND herself alive.
None of those things were important.
And that's the key. That's the reason. That's all.
They did everything they were told/meant to do, but it wasn't enough. Never enough.
