Going straight from a season 1 rewatch back to season 2 really does emphasize how... off everything is at the start of season 2.
When we first meet Aziraphale (in the present) he's just sat down to a plate of sushi, and is clearly fully immersed in the experience and loving every second of it. Any time he eats, or reads, or does anything Earth-oriented, he's fully involved and having a wonderful time.
In season 2, we get a brief glimpse of him listening to music, and that's it. He doesn't eat, he only reads for show, and his interest in Nina and Maggie is driven by 1) fear of heaven and 2) an insistence on 'Helping!' rather than his own involvement in the affair. Crowley even had to remind him of it after he got back from Edinburgh!
Even Crowley is... listless. Or wired. He's not swanning around bragging about bringing down telephone lines; he barely smiles, even around Aziraphale, when he seemed to take his own delight in the nonsense of the world in season 1. He's either idly sighing on the point of it all or desperately clinging to what he has left.
Neither of them are happy. They're both listless, looking for something to do now that they don't have their respective missions, and not quite able to find it in each other; not when they won't talk.
So Aziraphale throws himself into the Gabriel issue and Muriel and Nina, and Crowley throws himself into dealing with Aziraphale, and they both end up flying off in different directions.
After 6000 years, they're clearly not handling retirement well!
