I'm lonely.

The moment I got "two weeks off school" in sophomore year, life went to 4x speed & I can't turn it off no matter how hard I try.

Maybe COVID-19 adolescence did numbers on me. Somewhere between the iPhone 5c and ChatGPT, 14-hour screen times have live-streamed to me a steady, homogenous death of culture.

Nothing is cool anymore. Nothing is sacred. Every movement is a trend, and every cult classic a sequel.

The value we place on things being beautiful, on being "cool," and our gatekept appreciation of how hard these things were to find: it's been co-opted, or perhaps stolen. It's been stolen by the new merchant class. "Disruptors" and "innovators" turning our lives into a burgeoning black mirror prequel. Soon, we'll graduate too, and we'll wring every morsel of value in each others' lives dry for cash.

Plain and simple, I think we're being manipulated.

Recently, I deleted Instagram. My first impulse was to post a story or something, announcing my departure. But then, I thought that would be lame.

I got rid of my account, too. Kinda. Over 1 year, over 800 followers removed, and what remains of me is a little grey icon, and "JM_0000000010" where my name and face used to be.

yay.

There were many people I wish I could have been friends with, but I wonder, too, why I find myself so drawn to the validation of others. Does social media affect me worse, or do we all just choose to ignore it, languishing in private?

At any rate, this last year has almost felt like re-learning how to be a human being.

Personally, I think one of the biggest markers for maturity is when you become willing to disappoint the people you know in favor of what feels right to you, when you start to unravel the stories you’ve told yourself (or been told) about who you are and what you should be. In short, the sluttiest thing a man can do is be himself.

And sometimes, I think about every college student that has ever lived. My grandmother, my dad, and so on. Just consider for a moment all kids who graduated before 2010:

What was it like for the ones in 1940? To walk around, before a campus had computers? In 2006: To meet someone pretty, but forget their number? In 1999: To cram into dorms, and watch Seinfeld live on-air?

Would I, like my dad in 1988, have braved cold night, brisk wind, & landline phone-call just to knock and see if my friends were too busy to hang?

What stories could I tell if there was even the slightest chance of getting lost on the way home from a party?

Humans are social creatures. We crave our friends like water. To me, the clearest difference between Dasani and Instagram is that one of them comes in a bottle.

Yet despite these distractions and comforts we have in 2024, somehow, we still have engineering students. People who carve out time in their day to sit down, look at paper, and solve differential equations. But then, that's not so hard, is it? It just takes time. Precious, fucking, time.

At Meta, leagues and leagues of these engineers power behavioral scientists, who are competing for the highest salary. Their benchmarks? Your FOMO. Guilt. Anxiety. Obsession. The worse you feel, the more you engage with their content. The more you engage with their content, well, you're starting to get the point.

Try something for me: Open up Instagram, but don't tap anything. What happens? How many little animations? How many tiny nudges prompting you to get lost? Our home-pages are billion-dollar diving boards, hoisting us over engineered catacombs of subconscious quicksand.

My homepage is my FOMO, my envy, and my crushes. The pain and struggle of trying to be someone who I am not. My little existential crises, bundled-up, packaged, and shipped with a like button.

To abandon your social networks entirely, however, requires a safety net of close friends. After all, your friends are online, and you'd be miserable without them.

This is the problem with our monkey brains. Millennia of sociological natural-selection have made us quite great at feeling terrible. We're damn good at making tribal status games to play with, too.

Seeking refuge in quirked up septum piercings and boygenius listeners, my time in counter-cultural, alternative "scenes" between St. Louis and Tampa has shown me that even the weirdest of folks and the most removed can accidentally find themselves reduced to nothing more than high-school popularity contests. Even if I love them. Even if they're amazing people. We're human.

We can't "quit social media" as much as we can't "quit bottled water" Sure, we can, but it's inconvenient. And even without a bottle, we're still drinking water.

So I lost touch with my friends. I got no new updates on their lives. I forced myself into the inconvenience of not having a phone to reach for in fleeting moments of boredom. Suddenly, I was out of the loop. Suddenly, I was bored. And suddenly, nobody missed me. My only friends were the ones I had the time to text. Everyone else ... does not exist.

Weekends have become more valuable than ever. Without the empty social calories of seeing my friends' pictures, I find myself planning hangouts as often as my schedule allows. I have more lunches, more study sessions, and more is done in the company of less.

And I have the time to breathe.

And in this calm, I think I found my answer: it's my misplaced ambition. These fears of anxiety and people I thought I would miss, they seem represent something I want to see more of within myself. Something I want to develop, lean into more deeply, as an individual. And I think that's quite normal; to look out into the world and feel attracted to things we want to see more of. This is, I think, how everyone develops their own definition of beauty — and of coolness. It's largely the intersection of what we find most interesting, and what we want to see more of in the world. Because beauty and coolness, by definition, are rare and hard to find. If they were everywhere, nothing be beautiful, nor would anything be cool.

When we all turn into wrinkles and cataracts, bad backs and heart attacks, for a brief, glorious moment, our lives are going to flash before our eyes. In this moment, you'll see your story. The ultimate progression of you.

How much of that will be skibidi toilet and reaction clips? How much of that will be arguing on the internet? Can you tell me, just how much of your life will you have skipped over to pacify your intentionally-lowered attention span?

Things getting tangled (Thrawn/reader continuation)

I can't help it. I've been toying with the idea for two days already, and I think it's a high time to complicate things further. I'm getting to the point in the story when the reader is sent to retrieve Thrawn (as per Ar'alani's command), and managed to engage Eli Vanto more. Thing is, yesterday I was *this close* to writing Eli/reader, but something held me off. Then i saw this post by @burningfieldof-clover that gave me an idea for the part in next chapter where I got stuck recently. And I mentioned my dilemma in the comment. Well, I should honour this suggestion - so, buckle up, this is going to be a rather bumpy ride.

I have also thought of the name for this piece, and I can finally announce that you can look forward to THE INBOUND FLIGHT on AO3 in... about a month (although I will not be finished by then, first four chapters have been redacted and transformed to their final form).

EXCERPT:

Senior Commander Ivant was standing inside the Supreme Admiral’s office, waiting for you to arrive once you were released from the medical unit. He was clutching his questis in one hand, scrolling through the data and reviewing it for an umpteenth time.

“Doctor,” Ar’alani acknowledged your presence immediately, making him glance up from the screen before he too was beckoned towards the holoprojection showing the current position of the Steadfast. “Senior Commander, if you please,” she motioned for him to attach his questis to the projector.

Another chart with a new set of marked positions flickered to life beside the first one.

The Supreme Admiral started talking, summarizing the relevant reports she had read through. First sightings dated back to approximately ten years ago, and she had had to sift through them meticulously to pinpoint those potentially crucial to this mission.

“That still doesn’t make any sense,” you frowned. “Are you sure that it was the same ship leading the remnant?” you turned that question to Vanto. It pleased her that you paid attention – and judging by your expression, you suspected the same as her.

“Judging by the size, at least two classes of Star Destroyers were present – the Imperial and Tector, the latter being smaller. Do you think that the Grand Admiral managed to secure allies at Dathomir?”

“I don’t know, I left shortly after the New Republic forces arrived.” Or rather: I was chased out of there. “But it may be possible…” you whispered as an afterthought, scrutinizing the projection closely. “I wish I had the data from my ship. I can’t venture there without any valid imperial identification, they could take me for a hostile. Even if Thrawn contacted them and informed the others… Anyway, it might not be possible to reach them from here in the first place.”

“We are currently underway to their last known position,” the commander let on with a shrug.

“I thought that our course would be set to the Phalanx route?”

“Indeed.”

She could see your mind grinding behind your eyes, and let you speak. “With all due respect,” you started, your breath shaky. “The algorithm you used to filter out nonessential information – couldn’t these,” you pointed out the specific cases on the map, “be just a coincidence? As you said earlier, there have been multiple sightings, but your scouts also reported that every time their crafts were revealed, the ships disappeared?”

“That is indeed correct.”

If Eli could add something to that, he would say that there was no logic in this tactic. Surely, if imperial remnant wanted to find the Chiss, they wouldn’t evade them actively? Although, from his experience, he knew that the term ‘scout’ in Admiral Ar’alani’s vocabulary didn’t always apply to CEDF forces exclusively. There was no way that Thrawn would recognise all the various spacecraft not belonging to the Ascendancy –

“Then the Chimaera couldn’t be among them.” At that single thought, you felt both relief and an immense grief.

Every time I get into youtube this days there is like five videos about terfs and four that are exclusivaly about JK and always from new people debating it again and again and I don't know why the algorithmic thinks that because I watched some of thoses videos some time ago I'll want to keep doing it forever and like I'm just soo tired.

I don't know how to explain it because I feel shitty all the time about a bunch of things and transphobia is on top and I'm tired. And when I enter youtube I don't want to be bombarded with the memory that there is a vocal group that hates my existence and has a lot of political support. I just want something to play while I try to finish all my monthly solitary challenges and destress so I can think.

And that's nothing against the videos. I understand we need to talk about it and it's good that the bigots aren't the ones completly controlling the narrative but I don't know I guess I just want some queer joy. I just want to be happy for half a second. And I used to not care. But I'm the only trans person (and nb person) on my friend group and somehow even though all of them are some degree of queer I became the one that has to talk about it all the time. To explain my existence, to explain their existence to others (they ask me to do it), to try to explain to good intencioned bigots why they are still bigots and I just... I just want to exist for half a second man.

I'm not perfect. I literally just misgendered a characther for stupid reasons like five minutes ago and I still have to be the one that has to explain shit because idk I'm open about it? I'm not. I gave up talking to my parents about it after my mom said the reason for my gender confusion was because she wanted a boy when she was pregnant but I'm just a confused girl and said she was sorry for having post partum depression and making me queer or something and I don't even dare to try to talk about it with my family. I love my family. My grandma gave me happy birthday and said I'm her favorite grandaughter and I want to keep living in their lie thatthey love me unconditionally and we can only keep that if they never know. Maybe is because I'm vocal about being autistic? Because it sucks. I had a panick atack reading an old academic article about autism in class because it was soo dehumanizing and no one else saw it that way. The future ABA people treat me like a kid and are shocked that I'm just a fully functional 21 yo. And I have to debate them! To respect their choice of activally pursuing a path that harms kids and if I question it I'm just silly and my personal experiences don't matter because I was diagnosed later and never had ABA and the mothers of the kids they intern with love ABA and I don't even know what this post is.

I'm just having a burnout from existing I guess. From existing and being a good public speaker while having perfomance anxiety. And no one ever used they/them or any neutral language to reffer to me and I always say I use neutral pronouns as well and list it on my bio. And I was listed as woman for someone who accepts me and when I mentioned they thought someonelse did it and I just let them gaslight this person because I knew it wssn't on purpose and had no energy and the other girl would have done it anyway.

I think I wish I had just an opportunity to be rude. That I didn't need validation and to be liked for everyone. That I wasn't so afraid of being a problem. That I could just say that it's good that you don't see my boobs as a part of my gender and I know it isn't your intencion but it gives me dysphoria sometimes andbit really really annoys me how everytime someone goes "you really want top surgery?" yeah. I'm sorry you feel dysphoric for having small boobs or whatever but I literally have to do a drag persona in my head everytime I use a dress or make up because I can't see myself as the person in the mirror and I'm just tired because everyone has valid reasons except me. I only have valid reasons when I'm actually wrong. And I just want to be a prick to everyone even if they don't deserve it at all because I don't deserve it also and I don't know how to solve it and I just wanted some queer joy. The euphoria of being the "somehow this is the most feminine and the most masculine look you had" by a close friend. The silly smile when my aunt reffered to me on the masculine for accident. Hanging out with my queer friends and feeling I have a place. The quiet moments of just existing and feeling good with it. The happiness of when someone actually gets it. The niceness of just being myself to myself at least.

Aliens Isolation: Closure

Quick fic to process my messy feelings about synthetics in the Aliens universe. Summary: Amanda encounters a synth of the same model as Christopher Samuels and walks away with more questions than answers. Post-game.Very lightly implied Samuels lives and Ripley/Samuels.

Standing in the middle of the company cafeteria, Amanda's eyes locked onto a familiar figure, wearing a crisp, company issue khaki jumpsuit.

She froze. Even with her hands hanging limply by her sides, she could feel her palms sweating. The glare from the overhead lights was unbearable, boring into her skull like a welding torch. It was so bright, nowhere to hide, no cover no… Her muscles seized up, blood pounding in her ears, every part of her body screaming that she needed to dive under a nearby table, that it wasn't safe to be standing out in the open like this. But she was stuck, frozen in shock like the people she'd seen impaled on the creature's barbed tail.

Samuels looked up from his data pad, noticing the peculiar young woman staring at him from across the hall. The colour had drained from her already pale skin, and she was swaying on her feet. Everybody else in the area was dutifully ignoring her.

'Samuels?' She called out in a shaky, croaking voice.

'Yes?' he answered, moving toward her.

A thought breached through the black ooze of terror blanketing her consciousness-something was wrong-she couldn't remember a Working Joe ever moving that fast.

She anticipated feeling her head being slammed into the metal grating on the floor in retaliation but there was...nothing. The sensation of falling lingered. She blacked out.

Samuels had caught Amanda gracefully, gently cradling her head and taking a knee as he lowered her body toward the floor. He barely reacted when she slammed the wrench into the side of his face with enough force to tear his ear and gouge a chunk of faux-skin out of his temple.

'Amanda Ripley.' he read the name off her company ID tag. Hearing her name said in that soft British accent tumbled Amanda back into consciousness. 'Please, Amanda.' he said softly. She opened her eyes groggily.

'Samuels?' she snaked her arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder. She hadn't cried at all since Sevastapol, and now it all came out at once in great heaving sobs.

His body was warm in her arms, warmer than a human, and his chest gently rose and fell in a false simulacra of breathing. Instead of a heartbeat she could hear a faint ticking sound and the rush of the silky white fluid that coursed through synthetics.

'Oh.' She murmured, touching his neck, rubbing some if it between her fingertips.

'OH SHIT. You're bleeding?!' she scooted out of his arms and away from him, leaving a damp spot of tears and snot on his collar.

'Hm.' He touched the side of his face. In an instant the darkness clouding her mind lifted and she was slammed violently into the reality that she was sitting on the grimy floor of a cafeteria, and had just accosted someone who was only trying to help. And then-worse-hugged them.

'It's coolant, actually. Well. It serves several purposes, primarily lubrication and heat destrib-' he stopped.

She staggered over to a nearby table and sat down heavily. 'Fuck. I'm sorry. If you'd been human-I could have killed someone.' She rubbed her face in her hands.

'It's unlikely a human would trigger such a response in you.'

She groaned.

'I'm sure we can find a way to ensure your pay isn't docked for damaging company property. Let's call it an accident.' He said dryly, sliding into the chair opposite her.

She didn't even snort in reply. His humour calibration algorithms noted the failure to amuse.

'How many of you are there? Do you all look the same?'

The conversation ground to an uneasy halt.

She toyed with the grease-stained cuffs on her sleeves, spattered with white. He wiped off the blood analogue from his face and neck with a napkin. She turned her head and looked at the stain on his collar guiltily, unable to meet his eyes.

'37.' he said plainly. She didn't respond.

She didn't need to know why the other three had been decommissioned immediately after they were activated. Or that Christopher Samuels, WY-alpha-b.6#139C6 was technically still unaccounted for.

'I'm Robin Samuels. It's an honour to meet you, Amanda Ripley. Despite the circumstances.'

'Tch.'

They sat in silence for a long moment.

'Can...can synthetics create backup copies of themselves?' she asked sullenly, pulling him out of his own reverie.

'I'm afraid not. The company forbids the transfer of raw data. There are also...technical complications.'

She glared at him, frowning.

'I'm sorry, Amanda. I can't go into details, the specifics are proprietary.'

She huffed and stood up, retrieved two cups of cheap instant coffee, then sat back down. Robin Samuels looked at her with a softly neutral expression. Across from him Amanda Ripley was scowling, mirroring the expression she held in the company ID photo clipped to her breast pocket.

She had set a cup in front of him, and he picked it up. She'd given Christopher a cup of coffee once too. The first time they'd met. She knew he was a synthetic in that moment, deep down, but it didn't matter to her enough for it to register as a conscious thought. He was still a person. A crewmate. The memory punched her in the chest.

'Shit.' she mumbled, 'Force of habit.'

'It's fine, Amanda. The warmth...feels nice.'

He had his fingers wrapped around the mug, which was far too hot for human hands. She lifted her own cup by the handle, holding it up to her face as if it were big enough to hide behind.

'Can you...feel things' she murmured quietly into her coffee. Robin pretended not to hear the question.

'Why did you sacrifice yourself for me?' she almost yelled this time.

Samuels eyes darted to the cup, worried she would spill the contents and scald herself. Instead she put it down gently, and dug the heels of her palms into her eyes, stinging with angry tears.

'Amanda, I really wish I could give you closure, but I just don't know.'

'How did you know who I am anyway?' she snapped.

'I read your file.' He nodded toward her name tag.

'What does it say.'

'That you don't have much of a sense of humour.'

She snorted bitterly.

'Did he write anything in it? Why he chose me for the mission?'

'You're a competent engineer. You were in the area, which, in my understanding, was not a coincidence.'

'Hmph.'

'I suppose the company approved of his request because you're a...loose end.' He paused. 'There are a lot of redactions in the file.'

She squinted at him suspiciously. That statement was bordering on slanderous towards his creators.

'Why didn't they just put an order through to have him to secure...that thing. After we arrived. Instead of helping me.'

Samuels pursed his lips together 'Perhaps it was an oversight.'

'Bullshit.'

She glanced around the room. No one was paying any attention to her. The company had ensured everyone believed her ravings about a monster were simply the result of a fragile mind riddled with PTSD and survivors guilt. She hated that they weren't entirely wrong.

She stared into his eyes with deep suspicion. He stared back with a neutral expression. She tilted her head slightly, and he did the same. A mirroring reflex. Programmed to build rapport.

'When I went down to the Appollo core, there were Working Joes everywhere. Torn apart. Heads ripped off. It was brutal. I...saw him. One of the Joes tried to stop him and he just...pulverised it. Like it was nothing! I didn't say anything, he didn't know I was there, in the vents, watching… 'I got scared.' She sighed.

She rubbed her fingers into the puffy skin under her eyes.

'After seeing that. I thought I couldn't trust him. I couldn't trust any of them. But then he…' She stopped, realizing she was talking as if the person sitting across from her wasn't a synthetic himself.

'Why did he do it?' She rubbed the tears away from her eyes with her thumb and wiped her nose on her sleeve, trying to clear away the shame closing up her throat for doubting her friend.

His processor made a coin-toss decision on whether Ripley's question was rhetorical.

'The unit was obeying his primary directive to disable the Working Joes to prevent them from slaughtering everybody on the station.'

'I know that. I'm not so naive to believe 'protect humans' is a higher priority to 'obey the company' either. It doesn't make any sense, none if it makes any sense...'

She gulped down some still-too-hot coffee studied his face. Something about his features looked softer. Less tense. Less haunted. The longer she looked, Robin began to look less and less like Christopher. Robin was far more forthcoming about being a synth. Christopher had always been much more coy, making sly jokes and dropping hints as if his not being human were a private in-joke. Christopher must have experienced a lot of anti-synth sentiment, while Robin seemed unblemished by such bigotry. Or he didn't care. She squinted at him. Was it purely adaptive, or did anti-synth sentiments...hurt? Maybe this is why people hated the Wey-Yu synthetics so much. Looking at them made you second guess everything.

Robin sat placidly, hands around his coffee mug, making an amount of eye contact that was carefully calculated to be socially appropriate.

'He knew. Didn't he.' It wasn't a question.

The corners of Samuels mouth twitched.

'The directive came through. He knew about special order 939. He wanted me to find it.'

Lowering his arms as he passed where I stood watching him, rolling my eyes, his wide palm spanked my ass with vigor. "See, too much there. I don't get to hear that nice echo when ya covered in all this clothing." His palm came down on my behind once again, lips pinching downwards in exaggerated mock disappointment as the dress's fabric muffled the carnal sound of skin on skin.

I knew he was kidding, having a right laugh with himself. If he was serious, it would only take one heady comment, one strategic hand to have me in the same position he did ten minutes ago, bent over taking the impact of his lecherous desires, feeling each resounding thrust deep inside me.

But he was flippant with the idea, moving on towards the kitchen. It wasn't the first of the month, so I headed out of his home without another word exchanged.

              August 31st, 2015

Knees to my chest, my elbows locked tightly around them, holding firm with feet warming the chilled desk chair beneath me. Tomorrow's presentation was the only thing I could focus on right now. It was only twelve minutes, but I had to pack a hell of a lot of information in those twelve minutes. It was also a hell of a lot of my grade for the entire semester. Principles of Economic and Community Development sounded a lot easier a few weeks ago when I wasn't writing a full impact analysis of government militarization. Now it just sounded like regret and lost wishes of an easy econ credit.

I only have to take one more course after this one to cover all the required econ hours for my degree, but right now the idea of anything beyond this speech was just going to make me want to crawl in bed with ridiculously fluffed pillows and an Orwell novel. Thursday's Latin exam was too far in the future to even comprehend at this point. My mind was too occupatus for even a glimmer of thought at what I needed to deal with for that.

I couldn't allow myself to think about how fantastic that would feel right now, to be all warm and cuddly; I had to memorize my take on the loss of consumer good production and how that affected the business cycle and the investment demand balance and the worth of the Euro and ten other things that just were nowhere near as exciting as every American Wall Street movie glazed them over to be. It was more like crunching numbers and algorithms six times because there's six ways to mess each one up and if you get it wrong there's a domino effect that I don't have a penchant to deal with in the aftermath.

So in summary, this presentation was stressing me out on an unbelievable level. Especially because I kept switching two paragraphs out of order when I tested myself and I couldn't look at my notes when the moment came, exactly T- thirteen hours from now. Who knows what I'm going to get out of order when I start rambling on the podium, I could blank the whole speech for god's sake.

I knock on the wood of my desk twice. I'm not taking any chances with luck here.

Once t- twelve hours set in, I made the executive decision that I was about as perfect as I could get at this moment in time. I also decided that I'd recite it to myself over and over in the morning before I left.  

Maybe if I'm lucky enough I'll recite it in my sleep and subconsciously engrave each word into my cerebellum.  Fingers crossed!

The chime of a text message ricochets from my desk throughout the flat, earsplitting above the sound of my socked feet padding over soft carpeted floors. I ignore the notification, instead continuing the quest for apple cider. In times that other people would definitely favor tea of some variation, it never appealed to me. The spicy warmth was something I found much more calming and tranquil, no worry of over infusing or loose leaves.

I cringe at the frozen tile beneath my toes the entire time I spend in the secluded area long since designated to be a kitchen, only finding salvation in my return to carpet. The chime from my phone sounds again, sending me almost grumbling at the displeasing noise. Who ever's texting me must not realize I have a very tough presentation in mere hours, much less how stressed it's making me.

Rigid, my stomach muscles were all but quivering when I noticed how tight I had become at the thought of tomorrow. Deep breaths could only do so much for my mental stability until it was all said and done with. Even rationalizing the situation with the full knowledge how this was just common apprehension to public speaking and that this was in no way going to define my life, I was still nervous.

I clawed at the case of my phone in passing, grasping it from the desk's surface on my way to bed. The thought of who the text might be from came to me as I began to settle down under the comforter. Although then the thought of whether I locked the deadbolt came to me as well, and I found that much more pressing.

Not long after both of these thoughts passed, my decision to stay huddled in such settling warmth over ensuring my own safety and prosperity was made. Over a year I've lived in this flat, anyone looking to case the place would have done it long ago, I was sure.

Shying away from the overly bright light, I debated forgoing the message until I found myself fit for human interaction. Once the screen had adjusted to the surrounding atmosphere, the idea had all but disappeared from my mind.

Niall was certainly the last thing on my mind, and I was in no head space to have sex right now. Certainly not travel ten minutes to have sex and then travel ten minutes back either.

My Econ class was at eleven tomorrow. My presentation was at eleven fifteen and there was no way I'd get to his flat in the ten minutes between class ending and noon striking.

The revelation came upon me then; tomorrow was the first of the month. Payday had completely and totally slipped my mind.  I responded with a simple ok, somewhat grateful I get a small moment of respite in the morning, miles away from my mind's incessant running over coursework.

              September 1st , 2015

T-2 hours from my first class, from the presentation that would play a hand in deciding if I got the three hours of credit I deserve.

Niall's flat was a little out of the way on my route to class, so I had to scramble to delegate extra travel time. I forced myself to stop reciting the speech after I'd gotten it perfectly six times in a row, which was close enough to my destination.  

His flat was upscale, guarded with security systems galore to keep out armies with beautiful nails. I knew the code to enter the building, 7872, I knew the code to get onto his concealed floor of the building, 0716, and I knew exactly where he kept his spare key, covertly latched onto the potted plant with white flowers. He had just recently told me about the spare key a few months ago after a charade of him griping how tiring it was to get up and walk to the door every time when he already knew it was me.

I, for one, thought locking his door at all was redundant. Anyone who was able to get themselves this far was adept enough to eventually find it behind the third branch on the right.

Niall wasn't in the front room, or the living room, which meant he was likely in his bedroom or bathroom. I made no effort to announce myself as I waltzed through, I had already been summoned.  

Immediately, my mind processed that Niall was not in the bathroom, but instead bare on a sea of green where his duvet would normally be visible. History tends to repeat itself, and therefore I was not all that surprised at the sight in front of me. It was mildly comforting to see such a familiar face, settling the nerves that plagued me.

Per my calculations, which I'd like to say Imperial College and I were pretty confident in, there were exactly one hundred-fifty bills stretched out wide across Niall's bed. A strong hunch was leading me to believe that was the money I came here under the impression to pick up. Another strong hunch told me I was going to thank myself later for being here early.

"Fancy of you to show up, I'm so glad we scheduled for a late lunch date." He was hard, and seemed to also have no intention of being bashful. Not like I'd ever known him to be before.

"It's nine in the morning," I deadpanned, narrowing my eyes on his arrogant grin. "I see you've been watching Wolf of Wall Street again." Fingers loosening the bag in my clutches enough for it to drop with a resounding thud, I began the process of toeing off my carefully planned outfit.

"Harry's been on a kick; bet you all the money that's stuck between me ass cheeks that he and Kendall have been doing the exact same thing." I had no doubt that was a substantial amount of money considering how long he must have been lying here. "Hurry up, I've have a recording scheduled at noon and I don't wanna smell like I've just bust a nut, babe."

Babe. Niall had started doing this early into our agreement, I feel less douche-y when I say it, he'd claim. I'd given him hell about it for a little while, teasing the living daylights out of him for being soft. It had grown on me by now, a soothing sound to hear. Even when he just tacked it on the end of some vulgar comment, Niall's accent wrapped around the word, softened it somehow. His thick brogue calmed me in a way that I would without a doubt deny if asked.

His knee was up, setting his entirety on display.  I watched his face for a moment as I removed the last of my clothes. For the position he was in, his face held a huge contrast. Lips parted just enough to let air pass, every muscle looked relaxed, save from the small twitch keeping the corners of his mouth up. I knew from memory the defined cut of his jaw; but in that instant it was rounded, like if I touched him, his skin would be softer than my own. The tips of my fingers twitched to run through his hair, to see if I could rearrange the mess and still make it look as good as he did when he wasn't even thinking about it.

"You think I want to show up to class looking like that?" Knees working over crumpled bills, I worked my way over, sitting on his waistline.

"Won't be a boring lecture, surely."

"I have a major presentation, asshole."

We grind and groan and grin and fuck. We move together and it's fluid. It's a piece of the first time we had sex on a bed of money, it's a piece of the second, of every time after that. We swivel and thrust and it's both of us, and we know what we're doing, and in the same moment we have no idea.

When I roll partially away from Niall, one arm flung across his chest, a foot planted flat between his spread knees, a right shoulder stuck into his upper arm, I don't think. I don't think anything at all until Niall plucks a bill from under my breast.

As I do begin to think again, two thoughts are both glaringly apparent and muddily indefinite. The first is a running loop of my speech, almost like background music to my own life, repeated as my day's own mantra. The second is that I didn't know what time it was.

Today is Tuesday August first, this I know. I have a presentation at eleven am, this I also know. What I don't know, is whether I had royally fucked myself in the last however many minutes or not. Yet while the inverted Sophocles in me wants to sit here and ponder those thoughts and how they could relate linearly or otherwise to the other ones that crossed my mind today, my limbs were already off the bed, grappling at a bra here and a shoe there.

Muscles leaping, I go for necessities; purse, pants, bra, shirt. "Presentation in forty-five. I'll be back to pick up later." My ears barely register Niall telling me to come by after four as I dash out of his penthouse compound, one sock backwards and the other not there at all.

BitcoinIRA Exec: Bitcoin Could Surpass $40,000 After ETF Approval, Institutional Adoption

As Bitcoin, along with the rest of the cryptocurrency market, began to rally heading into last weekend, the sentiment surrounding the future prices of crypto assets seemingly began to shift, as many optimistic investors claimed that an upside is in store.

Chris Kline, a community voice at Forbes and the co-founder and COO of BitcoinIRA, recently revealed a specific set of four factors that could push the price of Bitcoin over $40,000 by the end of 2019. In a piece that quickly gained traction (and its fair share of controversy) throughout the cryptosphere, Kline first referenced a prediction made by Marc Lasry and backed up what the billionaire investor had to say, writing:

“In my opinion — the price [of BTC] may well surpass $40,000 by the end of 2019 and could continue to climb as we enter 2020. I’ve noticed that 2018 has marked a year of major growing pains for the crypto sector. But with growing pains also comes great growth. As Lasry has purportedly said, I believe we will see bitcoin prices continue to climb.”

The Arrival Of A Bitcoin ETF And Institutional Interest Will Drive Crypto

Staying in line with the story line pushed by many advocates of this space, the cryptocurrency-focused entrepreneur explained that once an ETF application is accepted, there will be an influx of interest and capital allocations. “If the application is accepted, then I believe bitcoin will become far more accessible to a wider range of investors who wish to invest in a crypto fund rather than directly into crypto itself… ETFs will likely appeal to a wider group of investors in that they are traded frequently and, in my experience, highly accessible via investors’ brokerage accounts,” Kline explained, elaborating on why this would be the case.

He also claimed that this asset class won’t be subject to “the same stringent regulations” placed on traditional markets, due to the fact that an SEC employee has overtly stated that Bitcoin and Ether aren’t securities.

In a similar manner, the crypto proponent also explained that as institutions arrive in this industry, whether it may be via cryptocurrency-focused products, solutions, or services, investors from consumer and institutional backgrounds will begin to get heavily involved with Bitcoin, “which will reflect positively in the price,” the BitcoinIRA co-founder noted.

Kline also added that Mastercard’s patent that aims to speed up transactions by building a bridge “between blockchain-based assets and fiat currency accounts.” As reported by NewsBTC previously, Tom Lee, the head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisers, also believes that this is a catalyst that will drive the growth and adoption of this up and coming technology, as Mastercard’s solution, if implemented correctly, will help to speed up and secure crypto payments, while also utilizing “evaluating risk algorithms (that are used in credit cards) to evaluate the potential for fraud.”

Although this may be a step back from the true decentralized nature of Bitcoin and other prominent networks, as Mastercard did mention “crypto fractional reserves” in the patent, Lee still claimed:

“Something like the Mastercard news is positive because it’s really validating the idea that digital money, or blockchain-based money, is a valid form of transaction.”

“Momentum Is Building”

Closing off his piece, the BitcoinIRA executive discussed that the Bitcoin network is quickly picking up momentum, drawing attention to the amount of on-chain transactions. While his data is somewhat outdated, citing BitInfo, he claimed that the number of transactions on the Bitcoin chain per day had exceeded an average of 230,000, which is apparently the highest this statistic has been at since the start of 2018.

This indicates that while prices have been in a slump, there is still widespread demand for the use of crypto assets, like BTC or ETH. Closing off this piece, Kline wrote:

“I believe that this trend of more on-chain transactions is indicative of increased demand in the crypto space as a whole, which will only continue to increase as decentralized technology evolves and digital currencies grow increasingly accessible — and useful — to a group of people that once deemed them radical.”

While his point about the number of on-chain transactions is valid, he also fails to point out that off-chain scaling solutions, like the Lightning Network, are quickly growing as well. This aside, it is clear that there is a real bull case for this budding asset class, even though widespread adoption is still a few years away.

I swiped right on everyone on Tinder (yes, everyone)

I previously began this project in my first year of college, I was 18 and beginning my studies as a theatre/biology double major at The Ohio State University. Shortly after reaching 1500 matches, I began to fear for my safety, and aborted the social experiment right after the beginning of my second semester. Now, being in my third year and two years older, I thought it would be a good idea to restart my project in hopes of gathering information on interesting people and (maybe) even finding someone I like. I am a seasoned user of Tinder, averaging about seven dates, two casual hookups, and even a couple of possible relationships. I am starting this article at the milestone of my 2000th like, a phrase I never thought I would be writing in a Word document while sitting on my mother’s couch. And yes, I swiped right on EVERYONE, minus a select few who were maybe going to compromise my safety (exes, past abusers, etc.). After almost a month of the project, I feel the need to talk about my findings and what this could possibly mean for the future of casual dating.

                   This project revival began just before the new year of 2017 after a stimulating conversation with my roommate about crazy dates and exes (Tinder or otherwise). I had been an on/off Tinder user for about 2 years, only rendering it useless when I was monogamous or having one of my “independent woman who don’t need no man” emotional bouts. My roommate, on the other hand, was a more recent victim of the hells of Tinder; finding it tough to convince herself to keep using the app for the chance of clicking with someone. We discussed writing a Tinder episode for a small show we were collaborating on outside of our academics, a project we were using to showcase the actuality of college life. This was the catalyst for both of us remaking both of our profiles and PAYING for Tinder Plus. We both signed up for a month membership, offering us a whole slew of new options for the app, like boosts during peak hours and unlimited likes. We decided to make hyperbolic versions of ourselves, seeing how much a man could handle before questioning his swipe decision. Our pictures featured tasteful cleavage and good angles, all necessary for reeling in ~the perfect man~. My bio read, “0 in the pink, 5 in the stink”, a phrase that I do not remember the source of, but seemed fitting for this version of Kelsey. I also had my preferences set to “men and women” since I am a bisexual woman, but none of the women bothered me. My roommate’s bio said, “hit me with the shocker”, so let’s just say that we were not setting ourselves up for success. We began swiping and found ourselves reeling in the instant gratification and validation in our attractiveness as women. The only song that was completely applicable at this point was “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls (I wish they made more music). We were quickly up to 500 matches after a few hours, and the messages were flowing in so fast that we had to put our phones on “Do Not Disturb”. Some of my messages were questioning the whole anal fisting thing, many others were ultimately willing and on board to participate in a night of intimate annihilation. However, most the messages were duds like “hey” or “wyd” BUT I have included some mighty fine gems here for your satisfaction.

  Let me just say up front, I matched with some real creeps, like people you see on the street and think “this person looks like they might murder me” or “I am getting a very strange vibe from you so I am hoping you can hear my thoughts and hear me say, you look lovely today!!”. People on campus began to recognize me; sometimes I would walk to class only to read a message 20 minutes later saying:

This began to make me paranoid; these men recognized me, but I would not be able to pick any of them out of a lineup. I walked around campus, locking eyes with people on my way to class and wondering if they knew me. My roommate had ceased her part of the project after beginning to feel freaked out by the sheer number of men who were actively trying to meet her. I did not judge her for this intelligent course of action. After being picked out a few times on campus, I took a short hiatus from my swiping and did not message anyone back for a couple weeks. Some men were belligerent, insulting me and my attitude after a day or two of not messaging back. A few men were persistent, messaging days, sometimes hours, in a row in hopes that I would respond with some witty banter. With 2000 people, it was very difficult for me to keep track of who I was responding to and who was sending me new messages. Tinder’s infrastructure was literally unable to handle the amount of matches I had, showing that people had messaged me when they had not and losing some of my matches in the void. After my hiatus, I was a little sobered to the whole experiment; I had lost my initiative to continue swiping and accumulating more messages for SCIENCE. Although, not everything was terrible with this project since it allowed me to get to some really cool people faster by bypassing Tinder’s match algorithm/design.

                   In total, I gave my number to and/or met three of the matches I accumulated during my second run of the project. I hooked up casually with one man, talk continuously with another, and am casually dating my most recent, normal match. The struggle with this is, how do you tell someone that you swiped right on everyone, even them? Does this emotionally compromise the other person? Does it bring to question your sanity and way of living when they find out that you have been messing with men on a dating app for over two years? I have told two of the three men about my project, and they did not seem to have an issue with it, albeit maybe a twinge of judgment and pain at the initial reaction. And I feel bad, I really do. I know that many of these men are just looking for casual fun, or even serious relationships. One guy even told me that I was his first match after a few months of using the app, something I had never thought about over the time span of my experiment. But, it is hurtful, what I did and am currently doing. Something as simple as a right swipe is enough to be emotionally affecting to another person, and that sucks. BUT, a lot of these men are uncool, many of them making attempts to sexually harass me, ask for nude pictures, or find out where I live. It does not absolve me of guilt, or give me a reason to continue my swiping extravaganza.

 The whole point of the experiment, for me, was to learn about the app, and the people on it. It is such a dark and mysterious topic, who uses Tinder, and what are they there for? No one wants to admit to using the app, but why? Why is our generation so afraid to admit that they don’t use “traditional” methods to find companionship? Is it because of past generations judging us for using these apps? Or is it because we feel ashamed or unable to find love in the ways our parents did? I still do not know the answer, and I do not know why most people use Tinder. Many men asked me, “so why are you here??” because there is no ONE answer to this question. Tinder is not defined in its usage as a casual dating app, or a serious one either. I have friends who have had long, fulfilling relationships from Tinder, and others who have vowed to never use the app again because of their experiences. We have reached a new age of dating, there is more criteria than ever before when looking for a possible partner. Politics, religion, values, ethics, academics, feminism, emotional/mental health, these factors now play a role in today’s age of companionship that they may not have previously. My mom is a liberal Democrat from Michigan, my stepfather a conservative Republican from Ohio. These two would most likely never be together today if their Tinder bios had been available up front with this information. I know, personally, I would never be able to date someone who was not a feminist or unwilling to stand with my social values. This information was not as readily available to past generations as it is to millennials. And that’s a good thing, being able to feel someone out before emotionally opening yourself. We have immediate access to Facebook likes, Instagram posts, tweets, and other things that can help us determine the personality of the person on the screen.

We have a lot to learn about these new apps as means of finding love or friendship. And while this experiment may prove futile in the face of emotions and statistics, I have learned a lot about myself and what I want in a potential partner. I know that I need someone who is willing to deal with my past of being emotionally abused, and I need to be willing to open myself more to someone. I have found out a lot through reading messages from men who were outright asking me for naked pictures in their first message. I have learned that a lot of men in college are unsure, unconfident, and very willing to put themselves on the line. I hope, from this project, that we can all learn, together, how our new age of dating works; but, for now, we are all trapped in the hell of “no labels” and constant wondering if we are normal in our ways. Let me be the first to say, there is NOTHING wrong with casually dating, hooking up, or one night standing it with someone. And it is OKAY to not want to do any of that, either. But, it is NOT okay to judge others in their search for themselves and their sexuality. We need to be understanding of each other as we move into the digital age of dating, and our first step needs to be erasing the stigma surrounding casual dating.
