I see a lot of discussion in the DR fandom on some characters that die early having "missed potential", and while I agree that definitely a few of them could have been written better or differently, part of me wonders if that missed potential is kind of the point? A character is shaping up to be something, so you get invested in their story, which then makes their early death all the more tragic. I mean, of course it's still a tough needle to thread to get it to land as tragic versus falling flat, and I'm not sure how closely some of these characters hit the mark. But I Do think some characters aren't actually "missed opportunities" and instead played their role in the plot how they were meant to, if maybe a little suboptimally.

🎀This is also another thing because the element of fiction affecting reality from DRV3 always interested us because, and we're not joking here, Tsumugi Shirogane's cosplaying deal is what made us realize we're plural/have headmates ;^^.

Systems have a thing called "fictives" which are alters using the base personality/design/story/etc. of a fictional character to form. Some even have exomemories, or memories originating from their source material... apparently. We don't really get that so idk what it feels like.

Of course we don't expect that level of nuance from the game that made Korekiyo the "another serial killer system but somehow grosser this time" guy, but still. Honestly a lot of drv3's elements can sorta devolve into gross things, but it feels like the main narrative doesn't realize that also counts as fiction that can affect reality? Idk

Korekiyo:

Korekiyo is someone who likes to observe from afar. So when he met you, who astounded him with your beauty, naturally he took up the hobby of watching you. Not necessarily in a creepy way, but of course it unnerved you a bit. You weren’t sure what to think, seeing his beautiful golden eyes bore into you all of a sudden. But he was quite attractive… so it was a win, hopefully? When you decide to approach him, he’s actually a bit surprised - he knows he doesn’t have the best reputation in school. And for you to talk to him out of your own will? He may be a bit blushy under that mask. 😳 

But eventually you find out that he’s just a guy who really loves anthropology and who really doesn’t deserve to be called suspicious by the other students. And he has a really soothing and hot voice, is very polite and nice to be honest.

Also, you have A LOT of nicknames for Korekiyo. They include, but are not limited to - Kiyo, Korey, Kork, Korky, Korky-Boy. Kiyo is endlessly amused by your wide variety of names for him. If it was anyone else calling him that, he would have politely declined, but you’re special to him. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind either, Kiyo will call you beautiful and list everything he loves about you, if you so desire. He’s so infatuated with you. 🥺

Kiyo is like, an expert in making tea. He would love to just sit down with you and sip tea while he tells you folk tales and ghost stories. And boy, he already loves you but if you show interest in anthropology and his stories, HE IS SO WHIPPED FOR YOU. If you ask to be his disciple, he would be shocked but so happy. Will probably do his “kehehe” laugh a bit too loudly but he’s so cute ok. Kiyo would probably start incorporating some folk lore with love in it when talking to you just to see you blush. Dates may include the two of you cleaning and tidying up his plentiful notes. I just know Kiyo is the kind of person who knows what each kind of kiss means… He saves kisses on the lips for special times.

As the relationship goes on, Kiyo is still a bit uncomfortable taking his mask off, and may feel increasingly guilty about it. You’ve been so good to him, and he still hasn’t shown you his uncovered face. You need to be the one who reassures him to go at his own pace, that whenever he’s ready you’ll always be waiting for him. And when Kiyo’s finally ready, you may cry a bit because you guys have come so far and also he’s so handsome. 🥺

Korekiyo takes great pride in his hair, only uses certain shampoo and conditioners, special hairbrushes and combs that don’t knot his hair. You’ve always wanted to brush and run your fingers through it, but you know Kiyo likes his personal space so you’ve always been unsure when to bring it up. But when you are finally able to, it’s like heaven!! He has long, luscious, locks like silk… and Kiyo enjoys when you play with his hair, it’s surprisingly soothing to him. And Kork would love to braid your hair too, he knows a lot of cultural and traditional hairstyles that he says would look gorgeous on you. So if you ever need to go to a party, Kiyo will hook you up.

I just know Kiyo would be great at taking care of you, he knows all these herbal remedies and honey teas that would make you better much quicker than you thought. He doesn’t mind giving you massages either, he thinks it’s very intimate and romantic and also thinks you’re so pretty. 🥺

“You guys leave me gifts all day, barge into my lab, and suddenly clam up when I appear? That’s not like either of you at all.” You huffed, waiting for an explanation.

Finally, Kaito gave in. “Fine. I can explain.” He nearly tripped as he handed you his gift, a blush forming on his face before he tried running out of the room-

Only for you to grab the back of his coat.

“I’m a dead man!!”

“Kaito, enough. Just tell me what’s gotten into you. You’re acting like you got a crush on me or something.”

“....!” The astronaut stiffened up immediately.

“....um-”

“O-Okay, you got me..” He turned around, coughing nervously. “Jeez..this wasn’t how I expected my confession to go, but...yeah.”

“Neither did I.” Korekiyo gave you his gift next, grateful his mask hid his own blush. “But it seems..we have a dilemma on our hands. A sort of love triangle.”

“You, too, Kork?” You were surprised, but also flustered, that your two close friends actually took a liking to you. 

For some time now, you’ve held the same feelings. Though..you couldn’t really choose who you wanted to be with more. You’ve captured both of their hearts..and it seems only one could be yours.

Unless..

“How unfortunate.” The anthropologist lamented. “If..you do accept one of our poorly-executed confessions...one of us is walking out of here with a broken heart. That’s the ugliness of human love, especially in rare conflicts such as this.”

“Damn..any way you look at it, Kiyo’s right. But hey, at least we did get to confess! There’s no pressure, [y/n]!” Kaito grinned. “Just listen to your heart and whoever it chooses is-”

“Who says I gotta choose?”

“Eh?” They both stared at you, confused.

You just chuckled and set the gifts on the table, adding to the collection you’ve already received. “If you both like me then..I can live with that. Surely there’s some way we can work this out.”

“..oh, I see. So what you’re saying is...you wouldn’t mind a polyamorous relationship?” Korekiyo mused.

“A poly what now?”

“It’s a kind of relationship that involves intimacy with more than one partner. While considered taboo in most religions..it puts great emphasizes on trust and honesty, and reaps great benefits.”

“Huh...I never even thought that existed,” Kaito mumbled, though he turned back to you. “But..I guess that’s alright! If you like both of us, then there’s no way I’d ever force you to choose!”

shinguuji is such a fucking interesting character honestly; i think there’s a lot of complexity, there, that i find really fascinating. his entire vibe, if that makes sense, resonates well with his personality, talent, and to an extend his backstory, and i found his presence in v3 to be really interesting, honestly.

i also, and this is rather headcanon-ed and i only really utilize this when i personally roleplay him, but i see him as sort of... healing? there’s a sort of cathartic nature to him. but that’s taken out of canon, so. make it what you will.

i have not great associations with shinguuji, so that sort of deters me from him 80% of the time. i also... greatly disliked how canon handled his past. so i suppose those two.

if shinguuji were to be in a relationship, it would not be one based on the principle of the other listening to him vent and ‘fixing’ him. not sure if that would go there, but. i notice a trend in media in general as well as danganronpa where traumatized characters are sanded down to be innocent and sad and nothing other than pain, with another character helping them through it, often in not the healthiest of ways. allow shinguuji to have his complexity; showing his healing without that waters it down and detracts from reality.

Hey!!! When you get the time... I would love to hear you talk about Mastermind!Kaito. You mentioned it goes well with his character thematically and... That piques my interest through the r o o f. Give me that sweet analysis of a sweet AU

Ahhhh thank you! You have no idea how sweet it is to hear that people like hearing me talk about Kaito! And mastermind!Kaito is… wonderful, and I’m always up for talking about that ^u^

The first thing about this AU that comes to mind is how it would fit into the main motif of the game, namely truth and lies. With lies as a main motif, a twist where the protagonist’s best friend turns out to be the mastermind would be a fitting twist. It also hasn’t happened in a dr game before with the mastermind characters being already set up as villains or as rather insignificant seeming characters. Having the mastermind be someone the player is supposed to get really attached to would be really shocking and impactful (and really sad). 

Also plotwise I feel like it could be integrated into the canon plot really well? Like, chapter five plays out mostly the same, but the execution was staged and once the chapter six reveal happens Kaito says what really happened in the hangar. Probably that Kokichi thinks his plan is going perfectly, but Kaito just laughs at him like, “Ya know, I know you’re not the mastermind. Because I am.” And Kokichi dies knowing he fell completely into the mastermind’s trap (because DESPAIR and there’s no way in hell Kaito would let Kokichi die with out knowing that he beat him). Figuring out that pretty much everything you though about chapter 5 was a lie fits the game’s theme pretty well too.

As for why such a super high school level sweetheart would be the mastermind, I can think of two main motivations in addition to just working for Team Danganronpa. The first is that he likes the power. He likes having complete control over everyone’s personalities and backstories because it lets him create a story where he gets to play the hero. And was NOT happy about Kokichi trying to screw that up. In fact, he probably ‘wrote’ Kokichi to be such a campy, evil villain to make his over the top heroisms look cooler. And of course he ‘wrote’ Shuichi and Maki to be the perfect, shonen anime-esque sidekick and love interest respectively. (Also I like to imagine that the occult-stuff went way further than he intended and his fear was legitimate, mainly because I think it’s funnier that way, and lets Kork unknowingly pull one over on the mastermind.)

Another motivation would be that he thinks the characters he creates for Danganronpa give people in the outside world something to believe in. After all, the outside world is so peaceful, there’s no need for heroes outside of fiction… With heroes from Danganronpa to believe in, people will be inspired to do their best, and make the impossible possible (thanks to him)! Unlike Mugi, I don’t think he’d be fine with hope or despair as long as it got ratings. He’d be very into to the idea of hope overcoming everything.

And during the trial… oh boy. He’d ABSOLUTELY keep referring to Shuichi as bro/partner/his first name and Maki as Maki Roll/Harumaki. Not completely tauntingly either. He’d legitimately still see them as his best friends, though he may take a moment to wax poetic about how sad it is that to get such wonderful friends he had to create them himself. He’d get over it quickly though because I mean come on, it’s Kaito. Always looking on the bright side, no despair for this mastermind :) Even while Shuichi and Maki are are actively fighting against him, he’d probably interrupt the debate to say stuff like “God, you guys are so much more confident than when I met you! I’m so proud!” And it catches them off guard because, yes, he’s the mastermind, but he’s still Kaito, and part of them both still want him to be proud of them. And they’re both still, on some level, happy to see him alive even if they do feel completely betrayed. He also feels somewhat entitled to them since he created their characters to be his sidekicks, and when the others try to snap them out of their despair and conflicted-ness, Kaito would get very very jealous >:3

I still see him as being terminally ill in this AU. Maybe that’s why he wanted to work for Team Danganronpa? Because Danganronpa gave him something to believe in while constantly in the hospital as a kid. And since death has always been following him, for lack of better wording, he’s pretty desensitized to working with it. And since he knows he’s going to die soon, he wants to live life to the fullest as a hero in Ultimate Real Fiction! Basically he’s a sickly delusional kid who wants to play heroes with his friends forever and ever no matter who has to die for it. Oh, and in his real execution, he would get trapped instead of crushed by the rubble and succumb to his illness. Just like chapter 5, it’s not his execution that killed him, but this time he wishes it was.

Good lord I did not expect to write that much, but the plot bunny got me. I’m really happy with it though! Thank you so much for prompting me to do this btw! I always smile when I see your messages :D

Saihara knocked on your door, and it slowly opened. Your face lit up when you saw Saihara.

“S-Saihara! Come in.” You opened the door, inviting him in.

“Hey, s/o! I haven’t heard from you in a while.” He came in, turning around and facing you. “Is everything alright?”

“Yippie! I brought s/o to the dark side~!” You groaned and got up from your seat.

He dragged you and showed you how to do his age-old pranks.

Admittedly, you did have fun. Kokichi’s all-over-the-place attitude just enhanced the experience.

You weren’t paying attention to Kokichi making excuses to touch you. You were much too interested in doing pranks.

Before you two parted ways, he grabbed you by the face and kissed you on the lips. It was broken quickly.

Kokichi sheepishly smiled. “I hope you like your last prank.” You scoffed before saying goodbye and watching him run off.

That night, Kokichi stared at the ceiling, hugging a pillow and smiling fondly. He didn’t have any trouble sleeping.

Gonta Gokuhara

Gonta was showing you his bugs collection.

He was really excited that someone showed interest in his bugs!

It was also an excuse for him to remedy your loneliness.

He watched your expression change from all kinds of extremes.

If he was asked to describe how it made him feel, he wouldn’t know how to.

But he wasn’t supposed to feel this way, right?

“S/o! Let Gonta show you the prettiest bug Gonta’s ever seen!” He took your hand and led you over to a moth.

Your mouth formed a small o. All that escaped was a quiet wow.

“Gonta, your collection is awesome!”

Gonta’s smile grew ten times.

But what did he feel for you?

Ryoma Hoshi

Ryoma was dragged by you. He was surprised by you taking your own initiative to your own problems.

What surprised him even more was the fact that you had brought him to a pastry cafe.

“I’m not sure what kind of places you like, Ryoma, so I brought you here!” You looked around. “They have the best everything!” You giggled at your own joke.

A waiter brought you to your table. As you two settled down, you began asking Ryoma why he wasn’t playing as tennis.

He stuttered out an answer. “I am..I’m just taking a break.” He rubbed the back of his head. Why did he feel so nervous?

The conversation went on, answers forced out of both you and Ryoma.

You two had a good time with good sweets, and got up to leave.

“Hey Ryoma, why were you acting all fidgety?” You looked at him as you two waited for the bus.

“I don’t feel my best today.”

“But you looked as red as a tomato.”

He looked at you, suprised. “I did?!”

You punched him playfully. “No, you didn’t.”

He forced a laugh, rubbing his arm. “You got me, s/o.”

Korekiyo Shinguuji

He had noticed you isolating yourself from the others.

Korekiyo had affronted you about it in the hall.

“S/o, why have you not been talking to any of your friends.”

You pretended to play dumb for the first few minutes, but eventually crumbled.

“My grandfather just died.”

He nodded. “Would you like to come over to my house and make a ceremony for him?” Korekiyo watched your pondering face.

“S-Sure. See you after school, Kork.”

Korekiyo watched you leave, and then went back to his class.

His house was very old. You were astonished by the fact it was stil standing.

You were about to knock, when the door swung open. “Hello, s/o. Come on in, but please be quiet. Sister’s sick.” You stepped in carefully.

“I didn’t know you had a sister.”

He ignored the question, getting materials for the ceremony.

“Korekiyo, would you like me to help?” You followed him as he set it up.

“That’d be wonderful.”

Whenever you and his hands brushed together, his heart skipped a beat. It reminded much of what he felt for his sister.

Except this was okay.

During the ceremony, he made excuses to hold your hands.

It made him sad when you left, but he was elated at the same time.

He spent time with another person he had loved.

My (post game) opinions on the ndrv3 cast

Alright, before the game came out I made this post where I basically vomited out my opinions on how I felt about the newly revealed ndrv3 cast onto a post and it was 50% jokes, 50% venting at fangirls. But now I've actually played the game, delved into the fandom and looked at the changes between the Japanese and English versions, I feel I can make a more genuine list of how I feel about all these good kids that deserved better. I realize my opinions are just that, and I’m probably yelling into the void here. But I felt I had to do a followup to the last post because MY GOD WAS I WRONG ABOUT (MOST) THINGS. I've listed every character in ‘favorite to least favorite’ order for convenience sake. Also this post will contain Spoilers. You have been warned.

1. Himiko Yumeno - I absolutely adore everything about Himiko. Her design, her lazy attitude, her voice (NYEH), her development across the game to become a more driven and energetic person...I found her really funny, really cute and oddly relatable. Himiko is probably in my top 5 DR characters of all time. Which is even crazier when I remember she’s one of the few survivors. I've never had a favorite character who survives a killing game before. So unlike past Dangan Ronpa games where my interest sorta dies off by Chapter 6, Himiko kept me fully invested in everything until the end. She’s a special bean and I love her.

2. Gonta Gokuhara - Continuing the DR trend of a Big Guy who’s a Big Friend, Gonta was so good and so pure and so friendly and deserved so much better. He was always trying to do his best and protect everyone until the very end. R.I.P Gonta. You were a true gentleman. Chapter 4 can suck my ass.

3. Tenko Chabashira - I literally D E S P I S E D Tenko when she was first revealed. I hated her stupid, sexist guts. But come Ndrv3′s release and Tenko turned out to be a dorky, kind, protective and strong willed girl who was skilled enough to be admirable but pathetic enough to be pitiable at the same time. I loved her undying adoration of Himiko (even if it was a bit creepy at times) and the two make a really cute ship. I was expecting some kind of tragic backstory in her FTE’s to explain why she hates men (I believe she mentions a drunken father at one point, and I really wish they went more into that), and the lack of a reasonable explanation for such a strong hatred is what prevents her from sharing (or even taking) the top spot in my book. But misandry aside, Tenko is a Great Gal and I wanna hug her. Although she’d probably bodyslam me.

4. Kirumi Tojou - Kirumi was my favorite when all the characters were revealed at first. I made multiple posts about how I’d die for her and how she was beautiful and whatnot and I was confident about two things when the game came out: 1) She’d be my favorite. And 2) She’d die - following in the footsteps of all previous ‘best girls’ before her. And well, I did really like her. Just...not as much as I thought I would. Kirumi is efficient, brave, elegant, caring and has a really cool design. But her talent occupies most of who she is as a person, and she isn't too dissimilar to most maid characters in anime or manga. So it made her quite predictable at times and I feel they could’ve done so much more with her..ah well. Kirumi is still a super awesome maid and a great Mom. Even if she hates being called that.

5. Kaede Akamatsu - Ahh...I remember when I was wishing someone else would be our protagonist when she was first announced...I think I cursed it. Because Kaede was just *incredible*. She was headstrong, perceptive, kind and left such a big impact on me after Chapter 1. You know that ‘Do It For Her’ meme? Yeah, that about summarizes the rest of Ndrv3 for me. Also Kaede is a huge gay and all the Ndrv3 girls are her girlfriends, pass it on.

6. Ryouma Hoshi - Congratulations to Ryouma for being the only non-standard design character not to be terrible. Far from it, in fact. Ryouma is a badass! A lil’ badass with such a depressing backstory and death that when they showed his motive video, I let out a single manly tear. Or several. Or many. I just...I just want this man to be happy...

7. Miu Iruma - Miu has zipped up and down my lists more than any other character. I had her ranked highly pre-game, lowly during the game, and mid/high post-game. Her design and talent are really cool and she makes several neat inventions over the course of the game, but her personality was so damn prickly and vulgar that I found her really offputting while she was alive. It was only after finishing her FTE’s and seeing her Love Hotel scene that I realized holy shit this girl has some serious trust and abandonment issues. It put all of her behavior in perspective and I began to feel really sorry for her all of a sudden. The hurt/comfort potential here is just WAITING to be uncovered but, alas, most Miu fanfics I've come across are just smut or crackfics. Out of all the Ndrv3 girls, Miu deserves the most headpats. Lots and lots of headpats.

8. Kaito Momota - A good, supportive friend and an effective comic relief. His optimism was a bit grating for me now and again (I never like it when DR plays the ‘’Oh we should just believe in him/her because s/he’s our friend :)’’ card because of how biased it always is. Like, DR will sometimes bend over backwards and completely 180 its own rules to make sure certain characters survive. In a game where finding the truth by objective evidence and fact is key, the times where it just says ‘’nah fuck the truth who needs proof just b e l i e v e’’ just feel so...stupid). But criticisms of the series aside, Kaito is a bro and he’s great. Who doesn’t love the luminary of the stars?

9. Kokichi Ouma - I realise putting the most popular character at 9th is going to make hoards of fangirls despise me but!!!! I don’t dislike Kokichi. In fact I like him a lot. His character is probably the most enjoyable to analyze out of everyone, his interactions are hilarious but also disturbing, the Kokichi memes are funny, and I too think the changes they made to his dialogue in the English translation was utter bullshit (almost as greater character assassination as Mukuro in the DR3 anime). But, I really love most of the characters in the game which leaves characters I’m torn on (like Kokichi or Kiyo) hovering at a position which makes it seem like I dislike them when actually I enjoy them immensely. Just...not as consistently as some of the others. Also Chapter 4 was an kick to the nads that I can’t get over. Sorry Kokichi.

10. Korekiyo Shinguuji - I was prepared to LOVE this guy so much. Seriously. I was ready for the moment where it would turn out creepy noodle man would be turn out to be a Wholesome noodle man. But uh, I think I’m with the rest of the fandom when I say that Korekiyo’s reveal as the SHSL incestuous serial killer made me drop him faster than Kirumi dropped in her execution (sorry). So, now I've establish Kork is the *real* Worst Boy...why did I put him at 10th? Why not 15th? Especially considering he killed Tenko? Truthfully, it’s the memes. Just...the Kork memes. And the fact he’s such an awful person and so obviously a murderer that it becomes genuinely hilarious to me. And his design is my favorite out of all of them. I’m so split on him. So, so split...

11. K1-B0 - Keebo made me laugh a bunch of times, and I enjoyed him more than I thought I would initially. Also his upgrades in Chapter 6 were badass as fuck. But I just don’t really feel the same affection for him like I do other characters. I’m afraid cute robot girls will always be my weakspot. Cute robot boys...not so much. (Although I’m all for Agender! Keebo that’s my jam).

12. Shuichi Saihara - This is the point in my list where I finally reach true neutral. I have no feelings on Shuichi either way. He’s deeper and has a more interesting plot arc than Makoto, which makes him a more effective protagonist in my opinion. But Hinata will always be the best protagonist in my book. And I just keep picturing what it would’ve been like if Kaede survived instead...

13. Rantaro Amami - I never understood why he was uber popular before the game came out and I don’t think I understand why he’s so popular now either. I have no negative feelings on the guy; he’s mysterious and has a ‘big brother’ attitude that I like. But the poor dude just died too quickly for me to feel anything for him. 

14. Maki Harukawa - I only dislike three characters in this game. Maki is one of them. I knew *exactly* what kind of character she was going to be and I knew I wouldn’t like her much and I knew she was going to survive. I didn’t guess she was going to be an assassin! But outside of that, There isn’t much going for me for me. The tsundere is never an archetype I like and the fact the deaths in Chapters 2 and 5 are partly her fault and no one calls her out on it is kinda frustrating also. 

15. Angie Yonaga - Angie’s creepiness is her most appealing trait to me. That should explain how low the bar is set here. Its difficult to write what I feel about her without coming across as a salty atheist (because most of her problems revolve around her use of her god to manipulate people) so I’m just going to leave it there.

16. Tsumugi Shirogane - Y’know I distinctly remember labelling Tsumugi as ‘’Hifumi but likable’’ on my previous Ndrv3 opinion post. I was wrong. She was hovering around mid/low level for me while I played the game, and I often forgot she existed (kinda funny considering her self admitted plainness) and her references were quite obscure a lot of the time so I didn’t find her funny either. I didn’t dislike her, I just forgot her. Then Chapter 6 happened and everyone knows the rest. It’d be difficult to truly ‘like’ Tsumugi after her reveal as the mastermind, after all. Although she was certainly entertaining when she started cosplaying as all the previous characters and I did like how her eyes glowed when she went all DanganRonpa crazy. I did actually consider putting her above Angie for those reasons, but if I dropped Kokichi’s placement because he killed Gonta then I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t slamdunk Tsumugi into last place for technically being responsible for everyones’ deaths as well (well, responsible as part of Team DanganRonpa. I understand it wasn’t *entirely* her behind it all). You know there’s a problem when *Hifumi* looks pure in comparison...

If you read through all of this, then congratulations? I don’t know how to end long ass posts like this...just pretend I said something witty.

Dani Pedrosa becomes a MotoGP™ Legend

Three-time World Champion Dani Pedrosa has been named a MotoGP™ Legend ahead of hanging up his leathers at the end of 2018, with the Spaniard inducted into the MotoGP™ Legends Hall of Fame at the season finale at Valencia. Pedrosa won the 125 Championship in 2003, the 250 title in 2004 and 2005, and is one of the most successful riders of all time in the premier class.

Pedrosa’s international career began in 2001 in the 125 World Championship. As a rookie, he took two podiums and finished his first season within the top ten overall in eighth. The following year he took his first wins – three of them – to finish the season third overall, before he went two better in 2003 and won his first title with five wins.

Despite breaking both his ankles in a crash at the end of 2003, the ‘Little Samurai’ then moved up to the 250 World Championship for 2004 – and won on his debut. At 18 years and 202 days old Pedrosa became the youngest rider to win in the class, and it was on his way to becoming the youngest ever intermediate class World Champion at 19 years and 18 days old. In 2005, he defended the crown.

2006 marked Pedrosa’s debut in the premier class. On the podium first time out in Jerez and then needing only four races to take his first win when he took to the top step in Shanghai, one of the most successful premier class riders ever had arrived on the scene. He took another win in his rookie year, at Donington Park, and ended the year in the top five.

In 2007 Pedrosa was second overall to only Casey Stoner and added more wins and podiums to his tally, and he was in the top three in the Championship in 2008 – despite breaking his right hand in pre-season testing and sitting out the US GP after injuring his left hand at the German GP. In 2009 he managed the same top three despite more struggles with injury, and in 2010 was runner-up once again. 2011 was another battle through the pain barrier, before an incredible assault on the title in 2012 that saw the Spaniard only narrowly miss out on the crown – and win the most races that year.

In 2013 Pedrosa was leading the standings before a collarbone break and was third overall, and in 2014 he suffered with arm problems throughout the season and despite that, took another win. 2015 began with career-saving surgery to fix the problem, and Pedrosa was back on the top step towards the end of the year at Motegi and at Sepang. In 2016 he won at Misano as he destroyed the field, and 2017 saw him make another piece of history as he took to the top step in the 3000th race counting towards the World Championship, in Jerez. He also won the season finale in style, underlining an incredible achievement: he’s the first rider in history to win at least one Grand Prix per season for 16 consecutive years.

After taking the third most podiums of all time behind only Valentino Rossi and Giacomo Agostini, Pedrosa retires at the end of 2018 – and now joins the ranks of MotoGP™ Legends.

“I’m very happy to be here with Dani,” began Vito Ippolito, President of the FIM. “You made the list of the big success of his racing career, in the different classes in MotoGP and I can’t add anything around that but I want to say that Dani is an example in my opinion to all the other riders, especially the youngest. Dani really is an example. The way he raced, the way he won, he had great results but the clean way he raced. We in the FIM I can say that sometimes we talked to Dani to share ideas about how he sees things, the penalties to the riders, what his opinion was. We have a lot of trust in Dani.”

“It’s a controversial situation for me, on one side I’m happy for him to be a Legend, from the first moment he said he would retire we talked about it and he’s been a big legend of MotoGP and a big asset,” adds Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports. “But on the other side all the memories of the generation are coming to me, Dani is one of the people who has worked through our system and now he has retired. I remember very well the first time I saw Dani in Jarama at the selection for the Activa Movistar Cup. Alberto Puig was talking to all the riders explaining everything, and from the beginning I saw Dani’s eyes and they were saying, ‘don’t talk to me and let me have the bike!’. And I remember he needed help to get on the bike but immediately we saw the skills and the possibilities of Dani. We decided the rules to be part of the Cup, the maximum and minimum age. And Dani wasn’t able to enter by a couple of months but then we talked about it and we decided to adjust it to allow him to participate, and it started a very good relationship. During a very long career we’ve discussed a lot of things many times. We are friends, but he’s also always trying to tell me what he thinks is correct! I’m extremely proud, together with the FIM, to make Dani a real MotoGP Legend, and thank him for all his contribution to MotoGP.”

“First of all thank you to Carmelo and thank you for the nice words,” smiled Pedrosa. Obviously it’s a very emotional moment you never expect it to arrive when you’re a kid, and now to be here is a bit strange but I’ happy because I felt a lot of support from all the fans, a lot from all the paddock. I’m really, really happy about this moment to see my rivals of a lifetime here. I feel that MotoGP gave me a lot of things in my life because basically I’ve always been here and I learned a lot in life thanks to MotoGP. In the same way I’m very happy that I could give something else to the sport like Carmelo was explaining. When I started it was a new generation winning races and Championships, not only me but everyone here on the front row. This is good for me because it’s a nice feeling that we opened a door for a new generation. Luckily I don’t know all my numbers which is a good thing!”

Asked about a standout moment, the Spaniard added: “Obviously the moment that stands out for me is the first Championship because you achieve something you dreamed of. You know you can get a podium or win a race but to get a championship it’s something that, as a kid, you see these guys going so fast and you don’t believe it. So when you achieve it all the emotions come out, and not only that year but for life because you’re been dreaming of it since you were born; watching races on TV and wanting to be that guy. So that day is unique and that’s what makes you, it’s the drive that makes you want more and want to keep going and get through the tough times – and the reaction from the people and the love you get is something I could never imagine so for me that’s the most beautiful.”

Pedrosa joins a long list of greats that have been made MotoGP™ Legends that includes Giacomo Agostini, Mick Doohan, Geoff Duke, Wayne Gardner, Mike Hailwood, Daijiro Kato, Eddie Lawson, Anton Mang, Angel Nieto, Wayne Rainey, Phil Read, Jim Redman, Kenny Roberts, Jarno Saarinen, Kevin Schwantz, Barry Sheene, Marco Simoncelli, Freddie Spencer, Casey Stoner, John Surtees, Carlo Ubbiali, Alex Crivillé, Franco Uncini, Marco Lucchinelli, Randy Mamola, Kork Ballington and the late Nicky Hayden.

November Rain – Observations from Sixers 124, Heat 114

I’m sure you’ve read about the Markelle Fultz and Drew Hanlen craziness by now and probably seen the horrendous free throw all over social media and ESPN.

So let’s talk about Joel Embiid instead, because I feel like I really haven’t written much about him this year. In every recap, it goes something like, “oh yeah, by the way, Joel had 32 and 12 last night, he’s just been so good in 2018.”

I guess the reason for the lack of words is because Joel is a known quantity. You expect him to go for 28 and 15 in every game now, and in the early part of the season, we’re focused on things like Markelle and Ben and their shooting and some of the new faces on the team.

Joel is on pace for a historic season. He put up 35 and 18 last night with six offensive rebounds. He shot 8-15 from the field, 3-4 from three, 16-20 (!!!) from the foul line, and turned the ball over twice while committing just one foul. That is a ridiculous basketball line, just elite in so many ways, especially for a 7’2″ center in the modern day NBA.

This is a 24-year-old guy who didn’t even start playing basketball until he was a teenager. The minutes restriction is a thing of the past. He is fully healthy and he is certainly an MVP candidate if he keeps playing this way.

Year to date, Joel is playing about five more minutes per game. His shooting is up and pretty much everything extrapolates to an improvement when you run his per-36 numbers.

Lemme give you the raw stats first:

His field goal percentage holds steady from last year, but you see a lot of improvement from the foul line. He’s getting there 11 times per game and hitting at 80%.

Here’s what it looks like if you run last year’s numbers on 36 minute parameters:

29 and 14 per 36 minutes. That’s wild stuff.

He’s averaging more points on fewer two pointers, and you see the increase in three point and free throw shooting.  His turnover numbers are down significantly and his rebounding and block numbers look good. I think the improvement from the foul line has been a really pleasant surprise.

League-wide Joel is now:

2nd in points per game

5th in rebounds per game

6th in blocks per game

1st in double-doubles

The only area where other centers are truly outplaying him, if you really want to go there, is in three-point shooting. Guys like Nikola Jokic and Nik Vucevic are hitting almost 10 percentage points better from deep, and it wouldn’t be much of a sidebar at all if Joel wasn’t attempting 4.3 deep shots per game. Still, he makes up for that from the line, where he shoots better than the likes of Anthony Davis, Jusuf Nurkic, and Marc Gasol.

Right, so Joel is in elite company this year. He’s having a fantastic season, and his performance last night was key in getting the Sixers a good road win over a decent Miami team.

Popping the Kork

Was it a mistake to decline Furkan Korkmaz’s rookie option?

He poured in a career-high 16 points last night on 5-9 shooting while going 3-6 from deep and 3-3 from the line.

Furkan has some game. He really does, and he’s not just a catch and shoot guy off the bench. He’s shown some savvy on the floor, which you saw last night on that nice give-and-go backdoor play with Ben Simmons that got him a layup at the rim.

More than anything, you could always use shooting off the bench. Brett Brown says he doesn’t know what happens with Furkan’s minutes moving forward, and Korkmaz complained about his lack of playing time about two weeks ago, but at this point would you rather trade for a 37 year old Kyle Korver or give Furkan a chance to be the guy coming off the pine?

Something to think about.

Markelle told reporters after the game that the ball slipped out of his hands.

Seems like there was a lot of backlash against trainer Drew Hanlen last night, and maybe rightfully so, because I’m 99.9% sure that this was given to Alex Kennedy as a way of Hanlen distancing himself from Fultz:

Markelle Fultz and Drew Hanlen are no longer working together or on speaking terms, according to league sources. No word on why the two parted ways, but their relationship deteriorated about three weeks ago. Prior to this falling out, Fultz spent the summer training with Hanlen.

Here’s the thing to remember: Markelle showed some really smooth jumpers in the preseason and even in the regular season. He was not consistent, no, but for all intents and purposes, it seemed like the mechanics were back to where they needed to be.

So is this purely mental? Yeah, probably. People still seem to think there’s some kind of injury here, but I’m not sure how something like that would not be fully diagnosed and rehabbed by now. For what it’s worth, Brett Brown was asked last week if Markelle had any lingering health issues, and the answer was “not that I know of.”

Say whatever you want about Hanlen, but he’s a basketball skills trainer and not a sports psychologist. He can teach Markelle everything he needs to know about his shot, but it’s on Markelle and nobody else to just go out there and get it done. It’s nice that the fan base and front office and coaching staff are all throwing their unconditional support behind him. The media has more or less been restrained in the questions we’ve asked him. It’s time for him to take the next step forward, because he’s the only one who can walk through that door.

Other notes:

Miami’s City Edition uniforms are fantastic, though the pink baselines were kind of trippy. Felt like I was on acid last night.

On FIOS, the broadcast went silent about halfway through the first quarter and was not fixed until halfway through the second quarter. My wife became so irritated that she took over the TV, turned on “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” and made me put the game on my tablet instead, which also did not have sound.

Mike Muscala took ten three pointers and hit three last night. I’m fine with that. If you’re open, shoot it. If he can give the Sixers important stretch-four minutes in the post-Dario era, that would be a really nice surprise.

Wilson Chandler started last night and played a conservative game. He logged 23 minutes with five points and three assists on 2-3 shooting. He was a +6.

JJ Redick poured in a “quiet” 25 with Embiid dominating the game on both ends of the floor.

Hassan Whiteside, who I think is a slug, actually had a decent double-double game. You just see how special Embiid is though when you compare his output to Whiteside’s output.

Last, and certainly not least, the Sixers only turned the ball over 9 times last night. It’s their lowest total of the season and first time they finished in single digits this year.
