Jedi: Fallen Order liveblog
Warning: there are a lot of complaints here. A lot. Seriously, I’m a glass half empty person, and I wrote down everything that annoyed me. I’ve done the first objectives on Zeffo and Kashyyyk, and I have no problems with what little of the story I’ve experienced, but I’m not happy with the gameplay-story balance and many things about the gameplay itself.
Anti shout-out to whoever packaged the game because 1) installing it took 45 minutes with my CPU loaded to 98-100% 2) it tried to restart my PC after installation. What the fuck? I guess if you can’t buy a game legally you have to pay with bullshit instead...
Would it have killed them to accompany the tutorial level with a, you know, actual tutorial?! I kind of figured you jump with the spacebar because it’s common across games, but I had to open a walkthrough to find out, after about 5-10 minutes of walking around and dying repeatedly, that there’s a rope somewhere in the dark (foolish me following the game’s advice on brightness settings) and you also jump onto it with the spacebar. Dropping down from the grates didn’t work with the specified key either, I had to mash the whole keyboard in blind rage until something finally worked. And then the game froze on the “lock target” tutorial, twice.
Am I or, for that matter, the other characters really supposed to believe that a normal, non-force sensitive person can perform all these feats of acrobatics?
Ideologically it’s very funny you’re supposed to replenish the force meter by attacking enemies. Are you sure I’m a light-sider?
Alright, the droid is super cute.
I am continuously amazed at how well-animated and expressive Cal is. (I’m so spoiled by good mocap in newer games; if the next DA game won’t have it I’m going to be disappointed.)
Once again, a tutorial that doesn’t fucking tell you what to do...
At first I had flashbacks to a certain planet from KOTOR, but now I’m more reminded of Inquisition (especially due to the art style) and Andromeda (the Vault, huh). Nothing new in video games...

God I must have done the jump with two ropes about 20 times... The one time I got to the other side I got immediately overpowered by the enemies. The second successful attempt was many reloads later. At least there's a save point right before it...
Oh god this was so fucking stressful. I made a series of successful jumps and then failed some and then I had to walk a pretty long way with literally zero health and healing items knowing I’d have to redo it all, possibly several times... I was so relieved to get to the meditation point at last.
Sick of getting killed by these stupid rams. I’m switching to story mode.
Finally! I was getting sick at looking at these pushable objects and being unable to push them.
And here we go to Kashyyyk again, hunting down memories encoded in mysterious orbs. It’s as if I never left KOTOR.

I managed to lock myself in a fucking tomb?? After a few minutes of panicked running around the small chamber and slashing at the bars, I reloaded and redid the last step of the puzzle before that, then watched a walkthrough. Apparently, the chamber was supposed to lock, because it’s actually an elevator, but in my case it didn’t seem to activate. (This part of my gameplay was sponsored by the Buried and Edgar Allan Poe. Legitimately triggered my normally nonexistent claustrophobia...)
I LOVE it when I try to wall run and instead I smash into the wall and am thrown into the abyss.
I had to read the walkthrough and backtrack from the crash. Why give me access to an area if I can’t explore it?
This planet took FOREVER. There’s way too much stuff and almost no plot. And after that hell, it’s very immersion-breaking to see Cal swagger onto the ship and casually chat with Cere. He should be falling onto the nearest surface and sleeping for 8 hours! Also, aren’t you all on the run from the empire, why aren’t you rushing to buckle up and escape into hyperspace?
I do not understand what the fuck I’m supposed to do.

I see, it’s a “fuck the arachnophobes” planet.
The lack of the current quest objective on the HUD or at least somewhere in the menu hurts sometimes. Coming back to the game in the morning, I couldn’t remember what I was supposed to do next, and had to look it up in a walkthrough.
Fuck these double ropes and whoever designed them! After about 20 tries, several deaths and two videos I finally figured out that you need so swing not only forward but also backwards to achieve enough momentum, and even after that I needed several tries to actually execute it. Sometimes I couldn’t even grab onto the rope properly: jumping onto it didn’t work, and instead I jumped straight up and fell to my death. I couldn’t figure out by myself the puzzle with the propeller you need to activate either.
Had to go revenge-kill a security droid for the XP and then got to the roof for the surprisingly huge fight and had to take another one of those again -_- As usual, enemies that specialize in CC are infuriating. How dare you hold me in the air by the neck, you stupid Vader wannabe?!
My Inquisitor from DAI, now in third person! I had to listen to this random NPC’s voice for a few seconds before I figured out who it belonged to.
There’s another tomb? Another area of the same size on that godforsaken planet?

The game wanted me to go onto the ice slide. I did it flawlessly on the first try. Then I walked in a dark corner, it turned out to be an elevator, and it brought me... back to where I started. I thought “well it’s an elevator, I’ll just get back down on it” but it didn’t work. I had to slide on the ice through spinning turbines again, and this time I fucked it up several times. Then I fell off a wall. Then I got killed by a ram. Rinse, repeat, get killed by the same ram again. Then I gave up on the XP and decided to get to the objective a different way. I tried to trek around the entire area I’ve already seen just to get to a place I’d already visited but couldn’t do shit because it became accessible before it became plot relevant. Then I realized that the way I got to the crash site seemed to be blocked now, wandered around for a long time looking to a way back, then discovered with the help of a video walkthrough that the only way out was to go forward through a ton of environmental obstacles like the damn pulverizers and the double ropes I complained about earlier, and make a giant loop... ending in the same place in the ice caves with the turbines, the elevator and the ram. So, lots of time wasted for nothing. Great game design, folks!

Alright, I reached the quest area and I'm going to pause there. It’ll be a few days until I can play again, so here are some of the impressions outside of what I wrote about in the liveblog:
Exploration: Way too much work for almost no reward. The more I play, the more frustrating the collectibles and echoes become. If 99% of unlocks are cosmetics, couldn’t you make them varied and interesting instead of recolors and tiny pieces of lightsaber decor you never see anyway? Echoes are so flavorless and empty it feels like the writers are afraid to step on the canon’s toes. As for the level design, see the numerous complaints above. I do like that the items and pathways are color-coded to indicate whether you can interact with them right now or not. I also like that, at least so far, there’s no pressing emergency “save the world”-type narrative that would conflict with the incentive to explore.
Mechanics: There is way too much parkour and, unlike combat, you can’t turn down the difficulty. Well, maybe “difficulty” is not the right word, because my real problem is how unreliable and unresponsive it often is. The difference between failure and success can be a split second or a camera angle, and you get no indication of what you did wrong. In combat, I keep attacking air even after turning the auto-targeting on. The skill tree doesn’t have much to be excited about. Unlike many other games, I don’t look forward to coming back to the game just so I could use a favorite combat skill of mine. Fus-ro-dah-ing enemies off of ledges is fun, but I can also do that in Skyrim or Mass Effect. I do enjoy that we can use the same skills on both in combat and on the environment. It’s good that the enemies aren’t health sponges, and that difficulty settings are about something other than HP numbers. I appreciate that respawning doesn’t undo your progress, but the lack of inability to make multiple manual saves makes me nervous: what if I get stuck, or what if my only save gets corrupted?
Story, progression and immersion: The story is hard to judge at this point because there’s been so little of it. At the beginning I was excited, but turns out, it was just an intro, and the main part of the game is 95% gameplay (which I’m not a fan of). I’m glad the PC isn’t immediately overpowered, but it’s immersion-breaking how he can dispatch trained anti-jedi troopers but has problems with wild animals, and especially how he takes so much time to remember and relearn the basic things he learned years ago. Seriously, it’s been so many hours and I still can’t pull things with the force! The writers also didn’t make even the slightest attempt to justify the respawn mechanic in-universe. The planets look more like playgrounds than real places; at some points stormtroopers yell something like “how did this guy get in here” and honestly I sympathize, but also, how do you get places, did you hang up all of this parkour equipment for yourself? At least for the first tomb they gave the excuse that it was something like a training ground. Another shadow hanging over everything is that during the OT there aren’t supposed to be any Jedi except Luke, so should I not get attached because all of these people are going to be dead within 15 years?
Overall, the game manages to remind me of half the games I’ve ever played even though I have not played anything from the genres it belongs to according to the internet. It feels more like Generic Video Game than like Star Wars, at least so far. When I think Star Wars, I don’t think “parkour and grinding for collectibles”, you know? I have problems with pretty much every aspect of game design; the older I get, the less patience I have with the games that fundamentally don’t respect the player’s time. When I looked up the playtime for this game, I assumed it would be much, much tighter. I don’t know how much time I’ve spent on it so far, but I doubt my playthrough is going to fit within the 17-30 hours that the internet described. People have called it “story-driven”! If 90% gameplay/10% story is story-driven then what counts as not story-driven, irl Lego?!
Still, I am not frustrated enough to quit. I look forward to exploring the next areas and experiencing the story by myself instead of relying on random youtubers. I’ve seen too many spoilers already, and I hope to encounter them in the actual game sooner than later.

I’m a sx dom and at my workplace I don’t have anyone one on one to bond with. I do have someone who I feel closer to but when they talk to other people I get jealous. Also when it’s break times and people talk to each other, my soc blind is completely lost - I can talk to people fine but find it scary to approach groups or people and strike up a conversation without them thinking that I’m needy. I have a real fear of appearing needy or vulnerable (I’m a 3). So what I end up doing is repressing the social urge and all my energy goes into maintaining a cold poker face because I don’t want anyone to see any weakness, but it’s counteractive to what I want to achieve (and exhausting, cos I just feel this inner pain). Even with the one person I feel closer to (and want to get closer to since my sx needs someone else to feel confident...) i still maintain a guard up because I’m just so scared of looking vulnerable... and it’s counterproductive to the closeness I actually want to achieve
How can I develop my soc and get over these intense fears? I should save the sx for romantic partners, but what troubling is how to deal with workplace while being an sx person..
Soc feels so unnatural to me and I don’t care for it if I haven’t got my sx needs fulfilled first. It’s just tough.
You are not soc-blind, because you are aware of what others are thinking about you and trying to modify your image to leave an impression on them. You want to achieve closeness and are aware you need to reach out and build relationships with other people to do it. This is the social instinct. That you are so anxious about it, fearful of how you are coming across, and over-focusing on it as being an ‘absent’ part of your personality might even suggest you are social dominant. Typically, the thing that gives you the most anxiety and makes you the most aware of being “poor” at it is your dominant instinct, not your blind spot. Your blind spot is literally something that never crosses your mind. You aren’t aware of how you use it, or the problems it is causing in your life, because your attention is focused on your other instincts. Your dominant is a place of neurosis and a wish you could do this better. A place of envy toward other people who are better at it than you are. Your second instinct is something that comes naturally to you where the stakes feel lower.
For example, I’m sp-dom. I overdo sp. I think I SHOULD be even more efficient at sp. Save more money. Learn how to do more things for myself. I’ve always been angry at my own dependence on other people as a 6, because what my sp wants is for me to be fully self-reliant in order to keep me safe. Soc for me is no big deal. If people like me, great. If people don’t like me, ah well. If they want to connect to me, wonderful. If they don’t, I go back to doing my own thing. But I am not envious of other people much who are more skilled at getting people to respond to them, because soc is where I dip in my toes. It’s not what matters most to me, which is my own survival in an uncertain world.
A truly soc-blind person has no clue what anyone other than their sx-partner thinks about them and doesn’t care, so they put on zero fakery. They are raw and blunt because they want to cut through all the social niceties (and are oblivious to them for reals, like it never crosses their mind...) and somehow arouse the energy in the people around them. As a result, soc-blinds and sx-doms in general are divisive among other people, who either love or hate them based on the sx-vibes they are putting out into the world.
The way you describe sx (“one on one”) doesn’t understand or embody the raw sexual drive of sx. It isn’t “one on one” -- that is a sanitized, whitewashed version of sx. Real sx is all about raw “fatal attraction” level energy. The desire to penetrate or be penetrated. To know if you are exciting/arousing someone or turning them off. Being addicted to someone to such an extent they consume you and no one else exists in the world except you, locked in your intense absorption in each other. Just as fast, that explosive sx connection can fizzle out and die, and like a junkie, the sx user goes looking for their next “hit” (a person). Sx is vampiric, it’s not polite, it’s not about just spending time with your loved one and getting to know them through shared time and conversation (that’s soc). Anyone can want a significant other or a lover, that’s not sx.
Anyone can also be apprehensive about approaching groups of people, and everyone prefers “one on one” conversation. They seek out people they know and connect to them, rather than entering a room and looking for the highest level of “energy” (which feeds sx -- where is it happening? how can I get in on it? how can I become part of it and rouse more levels of attraction?). Most of your concern is coming from a 3w2 place of not wanting or knowing how to be vulnerable -- but the thing is, 98% of conversations with other people are not about vulnerability. You can open up, share about your life, your interests, your passions, without exposing yourself or seeming needy. If you want and need connections and love, you have to put down the mask and “be present.” You are translating your own 2 wing fear of “being needy, being seen as needy, rather than needed” and projecting it onto them, when in reality, most people are thinking about themselves -- not you. You will not come across as needy unless you are a “hanger on” desperate for approval. If you use your 3 confidence to come across as interesting and take a genuine interest in them, you won’t seem needy. Do you know how to make friends? Build connections? Show an interest in them. Ask questions about them. Find things you have in common and remark on them.
If a client has a dog, I walk into their office and ask about the dog. I take an interest in the photos on their wall about how they went mountain climbing. I ask if that is their child. We chat about our pets and how much joy they bring to our lives. Casual conversation is something you can learn/develop through practice, but it is CRUCIAL you stop focusing on “how are they seeing me” and start thinking about “what can I bring to them?” Your soc wants to connect and find attachments, but you are socially awkward and are not sure how.
I’d do some reading and video watching on how to connect to people. Charisma on Command is a good 3-driven YouTube Channel that can teach you techniques to be a smoother, more influential version of yourself. :)

Do you have a clock in your room? No.
What book, movie, TV show, or video game have you been wanting to start up? I *want* to read The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, but I care more about reading Wings of Fire, so I probably realistically won't for a long time. I don't read enough for that; Sutherland will surely keep pumping out books in the series so I'll never catch up, haha. As for a movie, I've been interested in seeing Jacob's Ladder for a very long time; it served as a very large influence on the Silent Hill series, and boy, anyone who brings up video games in front of me knows SH is my SHIT. I also just know I'm bound to like it with how essentially legendary it is in the psychological horror genre, which is my favorite. Onto TV show, I'm not certain. Shows don't really interest me. I would like to keep watching A:TLA w/ Sara, but "start up" implies beginning something new, so. Lastly, video games. There are a LOT of games I want to play, but yeah, I have no operational gaming console above a PS2. I'm dyinnnngggggg to play a ton of PS4 remasters (namely the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy and SoTC), but as for a fresh game I've never experienced, Ico, which is from the same producers of Shadow of the Colossus. It's an old game, and Mom's bought it off of Ebay for me twice, but neither disc worked - they froze only minutes into the game. It's hella expensive in new condition though because of its age... so who knows when I'll actually get to play it.

Have you ever read a book in a different language? I've read some simple fairy tales as well as the play Faust in German courses.
Do you want to go to the Harry Potter theme park at Universal? I have no connection with the franchise, but I mean, I'd go if you're paying, haha.
If you had a secret room in your house, how would you decorate it? I'm trying to think what kind of room I'd keep a secret... Ha, actually, IF my love of tarantulas expands so largely to having dozens (which I doubt, but I acknowledge the possibility once I get my own place), a room kept on the down low to others just for them would be pretty cool. Imagine someone not knowing they're sharing a house with like, a hundred Ts, haha. As for actual decor, I'm unsure. I'd definitely keep it generally dark for them as nocturnal creatures, maybe with some Halloween decorations, like lots of fake webbing and neon green or orange lights. Man... that sounds dope.
What did you get your dad for his last birthday? I couldn't buy him anything, nor did I actually make anything since I didn't know what to create. I just told him happy birthday, of course.

Are you claustrophobic? In some spaces, yes. Ever seen Blair Witch? Without spoilers, you know "that part" near the end? Yeah, if you've seen it, you know. That would be a fucking NIGHTMARE for me. Even watching it made me squirm.
When grocery shopping, do you usually buy brand names or store brand? With most items anyway, we just get the store brand bc we cheap.

Is anybody in your family schizophrenic? If so, what is their life like? I have a scizophrenic half-sister that I've never met, so I couldn't tell you.
How organized is your mind? How do you know it's organized/disorganized? My mind is running Windows '98 with multiple windows and even more tabs open, all of them not responding. :^)
Why do you follow the religion that you do? I don't follow one. My personal religious journey was a train wreck liberating to jump off of.
Do you feel superior to others because you're that religion? I don't care if you're atheist, Christian, Buddhist, Islamic, whatever - you are by no means superior to another person in any way just because you believe different things happen once you die. If you do, it's time for some introspection.
Are you a blind believer, or do you frequently challenge your own beliefs? Seeing as I went from Catholic to Christian to briefly Neo-Pagan-ish to what I am now, just believing there's some higher power/knowledge and some form of sentience after death, I obviously challenge them.
What's the greatest thing about science? Life itself. This universe, this planet, your state of just knowing is a product of science, and that's pretty damn beautiful.

Do your siblings look like you? To a degree, but not NEARLY as much as they look like each other. Ashley and Nicole have been mistaken multiple times in their lives and even asked if they're twins.

What is going on outside right now? It's raining. Like it has been for what feels like literally weeks - and it might actually have been. There's been one or two sunny days in a huge streak of just nothing but rain. It's so gross outside by now; we've been under a flood warning for days on end.

They were a Christmas gift from my sis and are really soft and comfortable. Really don't care that it's now out of season, I wear them anyway. I do not match colors AT ALL, but again, I don't care.
What color straightener do you have? We don't have one; neither Mom or I use one.

I only have a cat and a snake right now, but we're getting a dog hopefully very soon, preferably today actually when Mom has to go to the appropriate city for her normal check-up to keep her cancer at bay. Her name is Vanna and sounds so perfect for us. Mom can barely wait.

Where do you shop the most for your clothes? Hot Topic or Wal-Mart. I'd really like more stuff from Rebel's Market; they have such a wide range of stuff that just scream my aesthetic. I got my purse from there, and it's fantastic quality and so cool-looking.
Have you ever read a whole series of books? Well, one trilogy that I remember: Shiloh. I adored those books and the movies. I got very, very deep into Warriors by Erin Hunter, but then my interest in reading waned, and I'm immensely behind. I don't think I'll pick it up again, but I've thought briefly about it.

Are you allowed to cuss in front of your parents? Dad could care less, but I try to limit myself with Mom, especially with "fuck." She's not a fan, nor does she like if I just swear too much in front of her. Like she won't yell at me or anything, she just makes it clear she wants me to stop.
How long was your last phone conversation? Just a couple minutes. I didn't get the Zoom link to group therapy one day and let the place know. Turns out their email was fucking up.
Which one of your friends annoy you? The family friend I mentioned a few questions above has the ability to be incredibly aggravating. I love her, but she has zero issue with inserting herself into everything (and sometimes we just don't want to see her), and she voices incredibly rude opinions literally no one asks for a whoooole lot. She's got a strong tendency to try to take control over every situation. Her being our landlord now makes it harder to speak up, and besides, no one wants to hurt her feelings. Don't be mistaken though, she truly is an incredible person with a heart more caring than probably any person I know.
Have you ever lost a close friend to death? No, thank fuck. I mean, I think. I do believe one of my childhood online friends committed suicide because of sexual abuse from her own fucking brother, but I guess I'll never know. She was talking to me one night horribly depressed and scared and then just vanished. Bless her, I loved her.
Do you know someone who suffers from addiction? Yes.
Do you have a lot of pictures in your room? Tons of posters and artwork, anyway. I currently don't have any photographs, but I got this shadowbox thing for my bday to decorate with pictures of Teddy so I can use it in my "tribute shrine" or whatever for him, and I'd also like to frame the picture of Sara's and my first hug and maybe put it on my bedside table.

Have you ever found a dog/cat on the side of the road? I myself, no, but a friend's mom did find two poor kittens thrown aside in a fucking plastic bag... Some people are abominable. Knowing how much my family loved cats, she reached out to us, and we took them in and named them Aphrodite and... I can't remember the other's name. She disappeared kinda early. Aphrodite wound up being one of my most beloved cats and was even the mother of a kitten that same family adopted. Delilah is still alive, doing wonderfully, and incredibly loved. <3 Aphrodite, meanwhile, as well as all our other cats at the time, were taken by animal control because our neighbors were tired of them wandering, even though they were too fucking cowardly to confront us first. I've said in many surveys that I am very much against outdoor cats, but I wasn't then because I was uninformed and really didn't understand. I wailed and sobbed and just pure shrieked like a banshee outside when we came home to learn they were taken. I have no clue how any are now, and that's the worst part.

Tell me how you got one of your scars? Hmmm, let's think of a unique one. Ah, my shins, left one especially. When I shave my legs, they get unbelievably itchy, even if I use lotion, and I would scratch my skin absolutely raw so often that I have permanent scars. It's partially why I barely shave my legs anymore.
Have you ever had a friend who cut themselves? I know many, sadly. I don't know of any that still do, thankfully. I promise, it never helps. If you ever have the urge, I can't suggest enough running where you want to self-harm under cold water or slap the location (like your wrist) with a rubber band. The latter is especially helpful. It's a similar burning sensation and doesn't leave marks. It would help me refrain sometimes.
What is your favorite thing to do in the summer? Swim in a nice, warm pool. Otherwise, become a hermit and wait for the outdoors to not be prepared to melt the flesh off my bones. x_x

Diary of a Junebug
Having a whale of a great time!
Scuba diving in the Crystal Blue Lagoon? Check.
Collecting pearl oysters and whatever else lies at Sea Glass Shores. Check.
Crafting a bunch of cool floaties and braving the Shimmering Whirlpool? Check and check.
Riding whales towards the sunset? Check!
Vacationing at the Sparkle Islands has been exactly what I needed! It's nice meeting up with Lenie again as well as Nico and Dewey. The Fairweathers have been taking a break from recording and performing so they've been focusing on adventuring and solo endeavors.
I can't believe that Lenie's a college senior now - where did the time go? Jimmy's busy with family stuff so that's why he's not with us. It feels like forever since I last saw him - but that's what video chats are for! Also, his kids are adorable and I'm glad to finally meet them as well as his husband. Nico's been globe trotting as usual, full of fun and exciting stories to tell us. Dewey's been taking it easy, trying to create a better work-life balance after taking on too much last year.
So far their break has been going really well. With everything going on in their personal lives, they could really take some time off. Artist's block sucks but sometimes there's nothing you can really do about it other than wait it out and focus on other things. Creativity can be finicky, especially when you've got other things on your mind like responsibilities, burnout, or a busy schedule.
I've been in a bit of a creative slump as well. From running events at the camp to personal life stuff getting in the way, I've been feeling off this past week. Like I can't relax because I have a million things running in my mind. If I'm expecting a call or email I find myself unable to focus on anything else because I'm too busy mentally preparing for having to do something that makes me nervous and often drained at the end.
Fortunately, I managed to get pretty much all the boring and stressful adulting stuff out of the way. But after spending most of last week being on edge, it's hard to fall back into my normal rhythm. I've been kinda on autopilot, just trying to get through the day. Up until a couple days ago I've been feeling pretty meh most of the time.
Usually, to de-stress, I turn to art. Doodling, journaling, knitting - whatever creative medium I'm in the mood for. But when you're in an art block, it causes more stress. As someone who's been journaling for years, there will be times when you've hardly touched your notebook in days, weeks, and even months. I have to say, though, since running the camp I've been journaling in a somewhat regular basis - especially when I started incorporating art journaling into it - but I still have times when I'm just not feeling it.
Sometimes getting your feelings out on paper doesn't help, especially when you don't have the words to explain exactly how you feel without it sounding forced or an incomprehensible mess of words. There are times when I want to write about something but the words just don't come out right, so I end up scrapping the whole thing. And of course, there are times when I want to write about something that's been on my mind, only to end up rambling about something else and going off on that tangent.
Then there are times when your mind is so fogged up that you come up completely empty. Up until today, I've been head full of fog, thoughts completely empty. Still kinda feels like that, to be completely honest, but the fog's slowly clearing up. I think the whale ride really helped with that.
As someone who believes a change of scenery and a good distraction helps when life takes a lot of out you, I find that I have a hard time following my own advice. I'm all about taking time to forget your troubles and worries for a bit, but yet I'm having difficulty doing so. I don't know why, but I always find it difficult to completely let loose - like I let myself have fun but at the same time my worries are always there in the back of my mind. It's like I'm subconsciously telling myself to have fun, but not too much fun. As much as I want to let go, there's a part of me that holds on, making me afraid to let myself fall freely.
What's the point in telling people to escape their troubles for a bit when I can't even do that without feeling like I'm doing something wrong? It's not that I don't know how to have fun - though it's taken a lot longer for me to catch on than most people - but sometimes it feels forced. I don't know, it's always something I've struggled with - at least compared to most of my peers growing up. Maybe part of it comes from being a convenient person - one who doesn't ask for much, someone who doesn't go out of their way to bring attention to themselves - the kind of person who tags along and is just there.
It's kinda like I don't know exactly how to have fun. Sort of like I'm second guessing myself by wondering, "Is this what having fun feels like? Am I doing it right? Is this enough?" and of course, that totally defeats the purpose of escaping and letting go.
I have to say, being at the camp as helped a lot in terms of teaching me how to live in the moment and enjoy the good times to the fullest. It's still a bit of a new concept for me, but at least I'm coming out of my shell - and that's what counts. Maybe I'll never be as carefree as some people - I've been told that I'm kinda low-key and serious by nature - and I'm okay with that. Sometimes I wish that I could be a bit more vocal and expressive and active, but most of the time I'm happy with being an observer and doing my own thing in the background.
It was Chai and Rhonda's idea to visit the Sparkle Islands. It was on the list for a while but for the past year the islands were undergoing a lot of reconstruction so a lot of places were closed. Leyla, who's one of the princesses of the islands, was behind a lot of the restoration and repair of various sites.
Turns out that I just missed her when we visited Maron Heights to watch our friends perform in After Hours at the Opera. Because she was so busy getting the islands back in shape, she dropped by to see the show the night before we came and went back home the next morning.
Like with Kat, Hawk, AJ, and Elara, Leyla's been going through a bunch of changes as well now that things are settling down. Aside from rebuilding the islands, Leyla's getting reacquainted with her mom Archer, who disappeared about twenty years ago in a disaster that left part of the main island in shambles for years. Having her back is still a huge adjustment for Leyla and her momma Rosie as she missed out on a lot. Leyla and Kat are pretty much on the same page when it comes to reuniting with a parent who was presumed dead for most of their lives. Despite the initial awkwardness, things are going well.
As for Leyla, a heated reunion between her moms led to an unexpected surprise - three actually. In about five months their little family of three will double in size. While her moms are terrified, Leyla's at the point where she's fully looking forward to having three new siblings. Sure, it'll be tough as her moms are out of practice with taking care of a baby (or babies). The way Leyla sees it, the 20 + age difference is more of an advantage because she can easily help take care of the babies as her moms will definitely be overwhelmed.
So along with overseeing the islands, Leyla's been helping Rosie take care of Archer, who's on strict bedrest. Archer's doing okay for the most part but the pregnancy has taken a toll on her, especially since there's a high potential for complications. Now with reconstruction almost done - about 98% according to Leyla - she has been spending a lot of time with her moms.
It was by chance that we ran into Lenie and her brothers as well as Leyla and her moms. Leyla's been dropping by to check in on us but it wasn't until today she joined us on a fun filled day of crafting floaties and riding whales. Rosie insisted that Leyla take a well deserved break and invited us for dinner when we got back.
Crafting floaties was a lot of fun and so was diving in the Shimmering Whirlpool. It does take some getting used to though, and one should be a somewhat experienced swimmer as the currents can get quite unpredictable. A bit too rough for my liking at times - not a fan of being spun around quickly because motion sickness, ugh - but overall it was an interesting experience. Definitely more into crafting floaties though.
Maybe I would be more of a thrill seeker if I didn't get so dizzy easily. I can't even look at something spinning for more than half a minute without feeling a headache coming on.
Late afternoon and evening were much more chill, thankfully. Bubble tea, sandwiches, and ice cream at the beach. Building sandcastles and breaking open coconuts. Lying on a beach towel under an umbrella and watching the waves. It's hard to believe that a couple months ago this place was left in ruins.
The biggest highlight was the whale ride. Leyla set us up with some of her friends, who were more than happy to let us hop on and show us the ocean. And I have to say, it was an amazing experience!
For a moment, I was able to let go completely. No worries, no doubts, no second guessing myself. Just bliss and exhilaration. A rare moment in which I get to be in the moment instead of being aware that I'm living a memory that I'll be looking back on fondly someday. It's strange, to lose yourself like that and not feel... weird? Guilty? Disconnected? Like you're not enjoying it enough because a part of your mind is elsewhere.
Riding a whale towards a sunset - what a way to spend an evening! I guess my takeaway from this mind blowing experience is that I need to learn that a part of having fun is letting happiness come to you instead of forcing it or telling yourself that you should be enjoying this. I need to keep that in mind.
