I can’t shut up about Polin, but I don’t think I can overstate how important it is to me that they took away the 12 year gap between books 3 and 4.

Colin being only 22, which even by the rules of established canon - is young for a man to be married, is a little detail that is so important to me. He’s literally just a socially adept nerd who rather be talking about geography, or writing, or cracking his little dad jokes with his family. He simply realized he was in love with his best friend and was like “yup, no need to wait around I’ll just ask Pen to marry me.” and that realization made him conscious of the fact that he doesn’t have to give a fuck about what society expects of him.

Penelope being my age, (20) and just getting to be married, happy, fulfilled and realized, while still retaining her youthful optimism is a great subversion of the “shy girl who went unnoticed until now” trope. She doesn’t have to wait around for another decade to gain her personal and professional agency, or to escape an emotionally abusive household, and that is such a beautiful thing to see.

It’s one little change that made such a HUGE difference in how their ship dynamic works, and I for one, love it.

like i don’t think yall are getting it. he changed himself for the chef in charge and stamped down his own creativity and instincts so that his dish would be molded over and remade into someone else’s vision, and he did that for so long that he forgot everything that made him love cooking in the first place. and then one day he finally snaps out of it, finally looks down and says “what am i doing?” and then in bravery or insanity or a little bit of both he changes the dish before it goes out the door. he makes it his own again. and THAT is the moment that made syd fall in love with his cooking. THAT was the best dish she’s ever eaten in her life, the one that made her follow him across the country just for a chance to work in his kitchen. and they don’t even KNOWWWWW‼️

getting married and having kids is the farthest thing away from my 21 year old mind, but i can’t wait to have my own family and not have to rely on both shitty sides of mine for holidays. obviously know how lucky i am to have them, but don’t love how they talk about me or the migraines they give me over every small detail revolving plans!! because i’m always the liar and the melodramatic one, of course! 🤩
