really interested in your thoughts on Turtles All The Way Down, partially since I know you deal with some of the stuff in it but also because it's honestly imo his best book (I say this as somene who LOVED TFioS as a teen and dealt with some of that stuff)
Hi Fiona!! Thank you so much for your interest!!
I love Turtles All The Way Down! Very few characters are as relatable to me as Aza. John's portrayal of OCD represented my own thoughts and experiences in a way I had never before seen in literature. The book is very meaningful to me.

Viva Las Yoosung
Hey, Everyone! I know I am behind but this is the piece I wrote for the @mysmetravelzine MysMe Travel Zine! For the cutie that is Yoosung! Thanks to everyone who supported the zine. It was an amazing project to work on!!
His hands were clammy and his throat was closing up. Dry mouth and sweaty palms. He had traveled so many times before. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle. Traveling around the United States for Veterinarian expos and conferences. Yoosung wondered why this time he was so nervous. Contemplating what it might be, he came to a realization when warm slender fingers intertwined with his own and his moist palm was met with a soft one. He had never traveled with her before.
She was overjoyed and filled with excitement. Yoosung was finally taking her with him! Yoosung was a mess at conferences. Huge event centers in huge cities. Skyscrapers, High Rises, bustling streets, and pedestrians jumping in front of taxi cabs like they owned the streets. It made him anxious and incredibly nervous. Making a fool out of himself in front of the love of his life? No way. At least that's what he had hoped. She broke him down. MC and Yoosung were off to Las Vegas, Nevada. Sin City. A three day conference. No big deal. Again, that's what Yoosung had hoped. MC decided otherwise. A weeks vacation.
“MC...do you mind if I sleep on the plane? I am feeling a bit-” He wasn't about to tell her he was nervous. “I'm feeling a bit...gassy.”
“You'll still be gassy in your sleep, Yoosungieee.” Her melodic teasing settled his nerves the tiniest bit. She closed her eyes and gave him her brightest and toothiest smile. “But yes, you can sleep. For half of the flight! The rest, we have to play games. OH! And you have to stay awake while the plane takes off. It's my first flight. You'll hold my hand won't you?”
Holding her delicate hand, he balled his free hand into a fist and clenched it tight. Steeling his resolve and deciding he would shake off all of his nerves. He was going to show her a good time, even if it destroyed him. Even if some mean hot dog cart owner made him cry again. MC deserved a great vacation.
“Of course, Babe! I'll hold it nice and tight!”
“Babe? Yoosung when did you get so bold?” Batting her eyelashes just moments ago, her big doe eyes had now narrowed and a smirk crept upon her lips.
“Get used to it MC, you're veterinarian extraordinaire, superstar gamer boyfriend is no more. You're with mature, jet setter boyfriend now. Travel-man Yoosung.”
MC and Travel-man Yoosung settled into their seats and quickly took to the sky. Holding hands and nuzzling the entire flight. The normal Yoosung had returned for the plane ride, but as soon as they landed, confident jet setter Yoos was back. Mustering all the confidence he could, Yoosung hailed a taxi once they retrieved their luggage from baggage claim and lead MC strongly by the hand. He planned on showing her a trip filled with more luxury than Jumin could offer, more romance than Zen could produce, and more visual pleasantries than God707 himself could create.
They stayed at a simple hotel and the conference flew by. MC enjoyed the minimalistic vacation they were sharing, but Yoosung had some tricks up his sleeves. On the last day of the conference, evening was fast approaching and Yoosung called out to MC from the bathroom of their hotel room.
“Hey, MC. There was actually a mistake in the booking of our room. They overbooked.”
“What was that, Yoosie?”
“Can you pack up our bags?” He raised his voice just a bit so she could hear him better. “We have to leave!”
Confused but not naive enough to question and fluster her boyfriend, MC began to pack up their bags. All the while, Yoosung was in the bathroom getting ready to execute surprise after surprise. His timing was perfect. MC just finishing up her bag and moving on to Yoosungs, gasped and clapped her hands to her mouth.
'Put it on, MC.”
In her hands MC held an elegant strapless body-con dress. A vibrant red in color, and a smooth silk texture. Laid about in the bottom of the bag were tall thin heels and accessories to match the dress perfectly. MC turned around to see her normal cinnamon roll boyfriend dressed to the nines in a slick black tuxedo, leaning up against the wall. She gathered the things from the suitcase and rushed to the bathroom to change. Yoosung stepped out of her way and she gave him a quick peck on the cheek. His cheeks flushed pink. Yoosung finished packing the bags and called for them to be taken to their new destination.
MC emerged from the bathroom and Yoosung was starstruck. He could feel a bead of sweat drip down his neck. He thought he might have gotten himself in over his head. She looked like a movie star and he had rushing thoughts of her being stolen away. Shaking his head he regained his composure.
“Picture perfect, Babe!” Yoosung smiled at her and gave her a cheeky wink. He offered his arm for her to grab onto and he ushered her out of the room.
“Well Travel-man Yoosung, where are we headed?” Yoosung's cheeks felt hot. He didn't think that nickname would stick. They had reached the lobby and MC was searching for any hints or clues to what he had planned.
“Ah, don't worry about it, Doll. We're on our way to a swanky dinner. However, I figured we could enjoy a walk on the Vegas Strip.” MC giggled at the way her boyfriend was talking. Trying to fit in with the locals, she assumed. Like some high roller who could bet it all at an upscale casino.
They stepped out onto the Las Vegas strip and MC's eyes went as wide as dinner plates and Yoosung could swear he saw them twinkling brighter than the lights in front of them. It was warm out. A dry heat. When they looked up they could definitely tell that it was night time but there wasn't a bit of darkness out. Not on Las Vegas Boulevard. They began to walk towards their destination hand in hand. MC was gasping and flitting back and forth between each side of the street, pointing and clapping in awe. She was like a child having the time of her life. Street performers every several feet. Musicians, Comedians, Dancers, Acrobats, and people with just silly talents. They past the giant Coca-Cola bottle, The large M&M's store, the small scale but beautifully lit Eiffel Tower, as well as the miniature Statue of Liberty. Everywhere they turned there were people in elaborate costumes. Women dressed in magnificent headdresses with feathers, glitter, beads, sequin and more material than their actual outfits. Most people dawned more skin than clothes. Flashing lights of every color surrounded them and music and beautiful noisy chaos came at the pair from every angle. MC was overwhelmed and overjoyed. Yoosung however, was not. He was a wreck. Worrying about the scantily dressed women coming up to him or the men in thongs dancing up on MC. Getting them lost in the crowd. He narrowed his focus and rushed them to their destination.
There they stood. In front of one of the most expensive looking hotels MC had ever seen. The Bellagio. A large pool of water was laid out before them and suddenly bursts of water shot upward towards the sky. Fountains accompanied by lights danced before their eyes. The Pink Panther Theme Song. The jazzy melody played through speakers and the fountains danced perfectly choreographed to the music. In the dry desert heat the beautiful fountains offered a light breeze and a subtle mist. Their shadows and silhouettes danced and flickered behind them as the water rocketed in front of them and the glow from the fountain lights illuminating their bright young faces. Their expressions ranging from in awe to enamored by the enchanting spectacle before them. Watching the streams of water dance gracefully and sway before their eyes MC felt Yoosung's grip on her hand feel less tight. It was the first time he had relaxed all night. She turned toward her boyfriend.
“Yoosung. Thank you. Thank you so much. This is wonderful and I'm so happy you brought me to this lively city and I am sure you have such an extravagant night planned.” He began to sweat. He wasn't sure what she was going on about. It sounded like the beginning of a cliché break up. Before he could completely panic MC held his face in her hands.
“But you don't have to stress yourself out trying to impress me. We could go hiking and stay in a run down shack for a month. You don't have to spend money like Jumin, or plan something out of a romance novel like Zen. Anywhere with you is a place I would be more than happy to visit. I love you. So take a deep breath and relax. Here underneath all these bright lights, what shines the most to me Yoosung, is you.”
Yoosung kissed MC softly and brushed the hair out of her face. “You have no idea how much that means to me MC. I am sorry for being so tense. I just wanted to impress you and show you a wonderful vacation.”
“Well our vacation isn't over. So what is next Travel-man Yoosung?” MC winked at her boyfriend and he gave a light chuckle.
“Babe, we're going to get you the fanciest steak money can buy, the strongest cocktail at the most lavish bar. Some scumbag will hit on you and I'll punch his lights out. Then we're going to blow all our chips and money at the roulette table.” Yoosung grabbed MC's hand and began running toward the extravagant front doors of The Bellagio's entrance. “VIVA LAS VEGAS!”

Fake News hits the hi-desert!
Come on, admit it - it wouldn't be 2017 without some fake news in the mix.  And for our final fake news of the year, we turn to author Ivy Pochoda and the "failing" New York Times.
Yes, after all, why should our president have all the fun (we fully intend to tweet this story out as soon as it's done), blathering on about the fake news media all the time.  Those of us in the media know far more about how it gets manipulated and co-opted and bought and sold than any two-bit New York real estate developer, after all.  And since we now have a legion of mindless MAGAts who know literally nada about journalism all telling us that virtually anything and everything we write is "fake" news, we thought it's high time we just jump into the cesspool with them!
I hadn't intended our prime example of late 2017 fake news to be Pochoda's lovely travel piece for The New York Times, "In the California Desert: Vast Darkness, Vibrant Music, an Oasis," but the more I read, the more it seemed this travel piece had donned the fauxhemian garb of fiction (we stole that term "fauxhemian" from someone in New York, by the way, and we're not giving it back).
Plus, and I need to disclose this in the name of journalistic integrity, an ideal we've all heard about but have rarely seen, I'm jealous.  After all, Pochoda's a trendy, popular novelist, and I'm jealous, because I'm on the second chapter of my first novel, and you know what?  It's hard work writing these novels.  Add to that the New York Times just rejected me for some utter wet dream of a job where they pay you gobs of cash to travel the globe and write for a full year - a job that no doubt saw something near 2.3 million applicants - and hey, so much for objectivity.
Some of Pochoda's meandering desert travel epic rings true, even to these jaded hi-desert ears, though she did claim in her initial story (more about that later) that Joshua Tree was actually south of Palm Springs.  Uh, no.  You're thinking of perhaps, Borrego Springs, which is also an awesome place to go, and one of our favorite desert towns.
Her first paragraph about winding up in Wonder Valley mostly by accident, sounded like an authentic desert experience.  After all, quite a few folks in Wonder Valley have wound up there by accident.  Some will tell you they got there on purpose, but press them for details, and... poof!  They can't quite recall what that purpose was, can they?
Of course Pochoda blames this accident on mistakenly booking a vacation rental in Wonder Valley while thinking she was reserving a home in Joshua Tree.  This is a problem that has gotten worse since her first visit, not better.  Virtually all 3,417 Airbnbs in the hi-desert all proudly proclaim themselves to be "in" Joshua Tree.  Some are even (gasp!) in Landers.
But by her second paragraph, Pochoda gets down to serving up a hearty dish of misinformation - the kind of misinformation that can only be known as fake news.
First, she refers to our area as the "High Desert."  Wrong, wrong, wrong, you urban elitist snowflake.  Our area, the area also known as the Morongo Basin, is the hi-desert.  The people who actually settled this place purposefully chose that spelling because the Lancaster/Palmdale area has always traditionally been known in southern California, as the high desert.  Our wise hi-desert elders (they were wise, but judging by some of their offspring, they seem to have married close cousins, if you get my drift) wanted to make sure nobody mistook our area for Lancaster/Palmdale (good move!), and besides, hi-desert (always lower case, because we're a no-ties, informal kind of place, not at all like Manhattan), sounds welcoming and friendly (though sometimes our residents can be that kind of friendly where they'll drink all your booze, smoke all your dope, and then steal your car).
We see a lot of folks using the term "High Desert," because they're not from here and they want to make sure all of us backward folk get our spelling correct, and capitalize it like it's a proper pronoun, which it is.  Sort of.  Or not.  We often see this unwanted correction of our area's name done by sophisticated pseudo-intellectual urbanites from Los Angeles, or even New York, who also love to refer to Joshua Tree National Park as "the monument," despite the fact that they never lived here when it was a national monument.  They think it makes them sound like the fit in.  They don't.
But Pochoda's second paragraph contains a more egregious error - and one the editors of the Times should absolutely have caught - that is, if they weren't trying to pass off some of that fishy fake news on their unsuspecting readers.  Pochoda informs us that you can go to Joshua Tree National Park (at least she doesn't call it the monument - thanks Ivy!), and "get your mind blown by Martian red rock formations..."
Uh, no.  Joshua Tree National Park does not have red rock formations.  None.  Monzogranite?  Sure.  But while you can find some red rock up in the oddly named Red Rock Canyon State Park in the northwest of the Mojave Desert, and you can find it in the similarly named Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, just outside Las Vegas, and in Valley of Fire State Park, also not far outside Las Vegas, or virtually just about everywhere in southeast Utah, we have no red rock in Joshua Tree (unless Mr. Andre went and painted another boulder or something).
Who paid the fact checker to look the other way on that whopper?
I'll overlook the fact Pochoda drops the "bohemian" bomb on us once again (the last time it was the LA Times that did it, and really, once was enough, thank you).  We get that we're different than the Coachella Valley, thank God, and yes, while much of the lo desert resembles a well manicured mausoleum, we are a little rougher and in need of a pedicure, or at least a bath.
Now, if Ms. Pochoda were to have submitted her story to this somewhat less than prestigious publication instead of the old grey lady, she would have had her red rocks dug out right away, along with the screaming windmills she had to drive through to get here (they do not scream, that's hyperbolic).
Never mind her brutish depiction of our fabulous Joshua trees with their "knifelike leaves reaching up toward the brutal sun," we all know they don't have leaves, they have spiky things that really hurt when you accidentally stab one into the side of your head, it's her epiphany about the desert that really strikes out:
“I get it,” I say, “it doesn’t look like much.”
In fact, Highway 62 doesn’t even look like desert.
Really?  So, Ms. I-saw-red-rocks-in-Joshua-Tree-desert-expert, the desert doesn't look like the desert?  Well, it damned sure doesn't look like lower Manhattan, now, does it?
OK, so then she utterly erased Morongo Valley from the map as the first town she passed on her oddessy (yes, it's misspelled, but more accurate this way), was Yucca Valley, where tattoo parlors and smoke shops rival the number of big box stores and fast food joints.  Well, she got that right, anyway.
Then, she arrived in Joshua Tree (town, not park), which she describes as "equally grim."  Yes, hipsters and fauxhemians, she just completely dissed your "village," in just two words, clearly not understanding that the cool people of Joshua Tree absolutely would, under normal circumstances, kill just about anyone who equated their town with Yucca Valley, let alone refer to it as grim.
Our intrepid explorer, enduring grimness after grimness, continued on to Twentyine Palms, a "town of barbershops advertising military haircuts, more tattoo parlors and smoke shops..." and she goes on to note two bars "too divey even for me," and a worrisome number of massage parlors.
That's hilarious.  Back in the early days of The Sun Runner Magazine, when it was still based in Twentynine Palms (before the good citizens of the city offered to firebomb my office, that is), not long after the magazine began publishing on January 1, 1995, Vickie Waite, the founding editor of the publication ran a quite funny piece that gently parodied Twentynine Palms in a similar manner, and it caused an uproar that resulted in quite a few canceled ads and outraged readers demanding an apology.  But, in the interest of journalistic integrity, I'd have to say that her portrayal, just like that of Deanne Stillman (another author whom to this day the mere mention of her name elicits an angry response in that scrappy town), is pretty much right on.
The only thing I'd add is that the dive bars are actually pretty friendly, and Pochoda doesn't understand much about the Marine Corps because the base commander will designate any bar that's too "divey" as off limits.  I fondly remember the Joshua Tree Saloon's days as being "off limits" because evidently it was too dangerous for Marines returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to have a drink there.  This was before they started serving seared ahi tuna salads and putting on airs.
Oh, and I'd add that some folks in the city keep saying they can't do anything about the happy ending massage parlors that service, errr..... serve, the Marines in town.  Yes, yes you can do something about them.  The Coachella Valley has had licensing requirements that have fully regulated the massage businesses there for years.  If they can do it, so can you.
Soon, Pochoda passed the "sturdy" (she loves that word) adobes and emerged in Wonder Valley.  She drove by the famous "Next Services 100 Miles" sign (it's famous because artist Andrea Zittel once gave an interview to some big city paper with no fact checkers where she said she lived past that sign - yeah, going the other way, back in Joshua Tree).  She bravely drove on through the "savage terrain that seemed to stretch on for a nerve-racking distance."  Give her a medal!
Now, honestly, I love it that Pochoda does "get" a lot about the desert, and she appreciates what it has to offer.  But snuffling beneath the deck?  What desert animal with any self respect snuffles?  Was that just a literary device?  If so, why do literary devices snuffle?  Allergies, probably.
No, I think I've found the answer: wolves.  Wolves snuffle.  Especially the ones in the original version of her story (that has been edited since our first reading).  Apparently we weren't the only ones who caught the fact that wolves had been included in the story, despite the fact that there are zero wolves here.  Maybe when sloths roamed the countryside, munching slothfully on the tasty knifelike leaves of our Joshua trees, wolves may have howled, but not for quite some time.
Note to NYT editors who replaced "wolves" with "dogs" in this story: we do have a problem out here with people abandoning their dogs, and those dogs forming packs, and those packs occasionally bringing down a desert bighorn sheep, or threatening and attacking a human.  One pack had been really going after our local bighorn sheep, until, a national park ranger explained to me, "we took care of the problem."  No, they didn't round up the doggies and take them to the pound.
But while it appears the fact checkers may have awoken at the Times and realized that wolves are not included in our entertaining selection of wildlife, they missed the subtle clue that followed that tipped us off that Pochoda had engaged in time travel as well.
Time travel?  How could that be?
Simple.  Pochoda's description of the 29 Palms Inn gives it away.  She talked about her trip nearly a decade ago, and the wall around the Inn's pool area being painted in "gradients of purple" on the pool side of the wall, and gradients of orange on the exterior.  Well, they just painted the wall in those gradients in the past year, so clearly, Pochoda time traveled during her first visit.
But on a later visit to the Inn (which is well worth repeated visits, by the way - we go as often as possible), she understands that being at the Inn in the Mojave is somehow the equivalent of being in a U.S. consulate on a small island in the South Pacific.  Minus the South Pacific, of course, or the tall coconut palms replacing our squatter, native palm trees.  If you spend enough time at the Inn, you may find yourself thinking it's similar, however, to a consulate somewhere on Alderaan, before the planet's untimely demise.
Her depiction of a night at the Inn is hilarious, with its "rugged tourists" and "resident artists and musicians of a rougher cut."  I'm trying to visualize the Inn filled with "rugged" tourists.  Were they all wearing lumberjack clothes?  Big beards?  Those are hipsters!  The only thing rugged about them is their desire to make big bonfires during 45 mph winds when they're getting a craving for s'mores at some Hipcamp, doing their best to burn down our homes.
Pochoda's description of the Campbell House is about as shallow as it gets for travel writing, entirely ignoring, well, the Campbells, who really deserved more of a mention, especially in light of their contributions.  No.  We're not going to tell you more about them.  Go ask the New York Times.  They're the ones hiring people who don't know anything about the places they write about.
I can forgive Pochoda's hyperbole and odd adjectives to a point, especially since this is ostensibly a story about fake news, even the swallows carving the purple sky, our gritty flowers, and fields of cactuses, with our insistent hidden oases, but then she went to The Palms, which defies description anyway.
Don't get me wrong, I love The Palms.  I just can't take my wife there any more because the first and last time I took her there some drunkass local woman tried to pick a fight with her. "Yoush look like onna dem LA womenth," the local woman who is actually from LA, said to my wife, who is from New Jersey.  It went downhill from there.  The woman, it turned out, made her living by taking pictures of people's auras every Thursday night at the Palm Springs VillageFest, with a special (ie: expensive) Polaroid camera.  What portion of the money the woman did not spend on driving back and forth to Palm Springs from Wonder Valley, she spent on cheap beer, knowing full well The Palms never 86es anyone.  Not even the shape-shifting reptililans who frequently drop by on Saturday nights.
I was ready to jump in to keep my wife from being clumsily assaulted as the woman got threateningly in her face, but luckily, my wife's hairdresser at the time, Jerry, walked through the door right then and quickly intervened.  Jerry lived in Wonder Valley and frequented The Palms, and had even survived a tornado that struck his home.  We do have some pretty interesting, and sometimes severe, weather out here.  Dick Dale, the surf guitar king, had a giant 2,000 gallon (don't quote me on this because I'm going on memory here) water tank that once was blown something like four miles away, and Jerry had his roof  - and his electric meter - blown off his house and off somewhere into the desert, never to be seen again.
What was funny, was that Southern California Edison sent Jerry an electric bill while he was waiting for them to come out to replace his meter.  He asked them how they knew how much to bill him.  "We read the meter," was the reply.  "Oh, you found it!" Jerry responded.
Virtually none of us who live here would be surprised to find out that SCE lies.  Some of that might come from the fact that another agency in the line of plying power, LA Department of Water and Power, told some really big whoppers to us a while back.  But that's another story.
Pochoda wrapped things up saying "big city artists and artisans and a rumored hipster hotel chain are coming," conjuring up images of change sweeping across our little wolf-riddled red rock part of the Mojave, snuffling through the knifelike leaves of the Joshua trees, and, well, changing things.  But we already have lots of big city artists and artisans, and some get me called a pornographer for printing their ads in the magazine (another story, but tied to that mention of people wanting to firebomb my office), and others make me really nice stuff that I love and use, and are as sweet as can be.  The hipster hotel "chain," is really just a couple remodeling (slowly) Govinda's old Circle C Lodge.  Not exactly Ace Hotel Twentynine Palms or anything.
Pochoda's story in the New York Times isn't a happenstance kind of thing.  She has a novel that's just come out called "Wonder Valley."  I'm glad she finds inspiration for her storytelling in our sturdy, rugged part of the desert.
Oh, and this notice has appeared at the bottom of her travel story in the New York Times:
Correction: December 20, 2017
An earlier edition of this article described incorrectly the location of Joshua Tree. It is north of Palm Springs and other resort towns, not south. The article also misidentified the source of sounds in the desert. They were coyotes, not wolves.

AUTHOR NOTE: I am sooooo not a smut writer. But here’s my loving attempt at it all the same. So this isn’t really smut but like, happy sexy times? (Please, 1000x over, let me know your thoughts on this one! So out of my comfort zone. Also, just in general, what’s up? Good stuff? Only a chapter or two left sooo…..)
These are the days we’ve been waiting for. Neither of us knows what’s in store. You just roll your window down and place your bets. These are the days we won’t regret. These are the days we will never forget!
“So what exactly are we doing?” Adam inquired, watching you from the doorway of the bathroom as you did your hair; two braids coming from the front, meeting at the back of your head, where you were pinning them to rest over your hair that was down.
“Regretting letting me plan today?” you asked, throwing a coy but mocking smile at him quickly, before focusing back on your appearance.
“Nah, I’m sure you’re not getting me killed or anything,” he stated with a chuckle, leaning against the door-frame.
“You don’t know that,” you argued, looking at him through the mirror. “I could totally have gotten in contact with the mob already. Or Jay.”
“…too soon,” Adam grumbled, making you giggle. “Can we not talk about him?”
“We’re gonna have to face it eventually,” you pointed out, finishing with your hair, turning to face him.
“Yea, eventually. But not now. Today and tomorrow…this is us, just us, OK?”
“Got it,” you agreed, walking to him, standing up straight to kiss him briefly “You and me.”
“You and me.”
“Now let’s go so I can date the hell out of you,” you declared, causing him to laugh outright, as you walked past him out of the bathroom.
“Oh, is that what this is?” he asked amused, turning and watching you as you grabbed your shoes, and sat down on the bed to put them on.
“Yes,” you answered, tying your red low top shoes. “Because we did this whole thing ass backwards.”
“I mean, you’re not wrong,” he conceded. “But we also haven’t exactly had time with each other that didn’t also involve work.”
“Well, now we do. So we’re gonna be normal,” you explained, standing up. You fixed the flowy black shirt you were wearing, which was over a light pair of jean capris. Adam was similarly dressed in a jeans and a t-shirt. Las Vegas wasn’t sweltering at this time in the day, but it was warm enough for you to just bring a light sweater and be fine.
After getting back from the show last night, the both of you had realized you hadn’t made actual plans for the next two days. So it had been determined, with a coin toss, that you would be in charge of today’s activities, and Adam was to plan tomorrow.
This morning you had slept in together, enjoying a lazy morning in bed with the TV. Adam had, courteously, kept his own hotel room booked for the days, but you were happy to wake up beside him, and told him as much.
Once the day had turned to afternoon, you went downstairs to the hotel restaurant for lunch. It was just shy of 4PM now, and you were finally heading out for the other activities you’d chosen. Which you were keeping secret from Adam.
Though, to be fair, he hadn’t told you what he planned for tomorrow.
Making sure you both had any needed items from the room, you went downstairs and out to the car. Adam, begrudgingly, let you drive. You had to give him points for thinking you’d let him and he could figure out the plans that way.
Las Vegas traffic was a bitch, even later on a Sunday. But you eventually arrived to your pre-planned destination. The same venue you’d had Ring of Honor shows at this weekend; Sam Town’s Live.
“…what?” Adam asked, his eyes scanning over the building. “We’ve been here for the last two nights. Why are we back?”
“How many times have we been here, like in total?” you responded, parking the car.
“I don’t know. Probably ten? Maybe?”
“And none of those times did any of us ever do any of the fun stuff that’s here,” you specified. “We’ve talked about it on plenty of occasions, just never did it.” The two of you got out of the vehicle, meeting at the trunk. “So, we’re gonna see a movie and get dinner and then I am so kicking your ass at bowling.”
“You are taking this ‘normal’ date plan very seriously,” Adam observed with a chuckle. You just grinned cheekily at him, took his hand, and made sure he was coming along with you into the building.
You found it was easier to just be you when it was only Adam. There was no worrying over what others thought or said or saw. There was little opportunity for your mind to go elsewhere. Adam was engaging, fun, entirely aware of you…you’d forgotten part of that somewhere along the way it seemed. But if you thought about it, it was what attracted you to him. Your friendship way back when had started with him because of these things.
Adam was beyond excited that you’d picked the movie Fist Fight to see. You giggled at his enthusiasm, and internally praised yourself for the choice.  To be fair, it was also a movie you wanted to see.
It was about 6PM when you left the theater, still laughing and going over your favorite parts of the movie. You grabbed dinner at the in-building steakhouse, which was full of genuine catching up with one another; talk of each other’s families, Adam asking about your other job, you asking about his recent time in Japan, and his upcoming trip to England.
By the time you headed over to the bowling alley, a couple hours later, you were slightly tipsy. Not drunk, but feeling a bit looser.
The man working the counter was a big wrestling fan you found out. So after some talking, a couple autographs and pictures, he gave you what would essentially be free games for the night. After many assurances it wasn’t necessary, and then thanks, you headed over to get your bowling shoes.
“How come they haven’t made cuter shoes by now?”
“I don’t know,” Adam answered, picking up his pair from the counter.
“Like, this does not match my outfit, at all,” you disapproved.
“Well, that’s the joy of bowling, isn’t it? You get to wear stupid shoes and throw things at other things,” he detailed, as you finally reached your assigned lane.
“I do like throwing things,” you conceded almost dreamily, causing him to chuckle. Sitting down on one of the plastic benches, stowing your purse underneath, you took off your shoes and put on the tan and red shoes.
“Do I look good, or do I look good?” you asked jokingly, standing up and striking a dramatic pose to show off your temporary footwear.
“Sexiest you’ve ever looked,” Adam established.
The first two games went by quickly, leaving you each with one win. Jokes and trash talk were exchanged throughout. Adam attempted to distract you by sneaking up behind you, and you attempted to throw him off his game by teasingly pulling up your shirt a few inches.
“I will return with more drinks,” you decided, kissing his cheek, and standing up after the second game had ended, and the waitress circling around hadn’t been seen in a while.
“Alright,” Adam said, and you could feel his gaze on you as you walked away.
Making your way to the bar, you leaned your forearms against it, waiting for the bartender to notice you. She was currently filling a larger order, so you knew it would take a moment. In the interim, you let your eyes scan around, casually people watching. Vegas sure brought out an eclectic grouping of people; from families to couples to girls getting drunk together, to dudes trying to hit on those girls. It was an interesting mixture, and entertaining to observe.
“Who knew a Sunday night would be so busy?” Looking over, you found a man standing beside you. He was cute enough, in the conventional preppy-boy style; wearing a graphic tee and jeans. He had to be in his mid-20s you figured, around your age.
“Vegas never sleeps,” you replied.
“Can’t really blame it,” he stated. “It’s not for a lack of anything to do.”
“This is true,” you agreed, your eyes trying to catch that of the bartender’s.
“Are you here on vacation?”
“Something like that.”
“Well, I’m Nate,” he introduced himself.
“Nice to meet you.”
“No name for you?”
“I’m a mystery,” you identified, your voice monotone. You could chit-chat with the best of them, if their intentions seemed innocent or sweet. But something in this man’s posture, presentation, told you he wasn’t either of these things. And that made him unwelcome to you.
“I bet I can figure you out,” Nate decreed, suggestively. You continued to stare at the bartender, in hopes she’d come over soon.
Thankfully, she did. You ordered another round of liquor for you and Adam, watching as she walked off to make the drinks.
“Didn’t take you for a vodka girl,” Nate commented.
“Eavesdropping is rude,” you highlighted.
“Feisty.” You had to work very hard to restrain yourself from rolling your eyes, and giving him a piece of your mind. “Don’t girls usually like their cute little mixed drinks?”
“Anyone can like a good mixed drink whenever they choose to,” you explained, your tone biting. “I don’t recall drink menus coming with gender assignments.”
“Hey.” Adam’s voice was music to your ears. Not that you couldn’t handle yourself, you had for years. But backup was always welcomed. Especially when you just weren’t in the mood to handle pushy men.
“Hi,” you turned you hip against the bar, allowing him to come to your side, an arm going around your waist. You didn’t miss that his kiss was a little bit more possessive than usual. You guessed he’d been watching you at the bar, and had read the situation the same way you had.
“Have you even ordered yet?” Adam inquired.
“Yes.”
“Good.” From the corner of your eye, you noticed the scowl on Nate’s face beside you. Adam turned his gaze to the man, and you could almost feel the cockiness, protectiveness, radiating from him. “Hey, man.”
“Hey,” the other reciprocated. “Busy night, huh?”
“Definitely,” Adam granted, his stare never leaving Nate’s. “But my girlfriend and I are having fun all the same.”
Your heart skipped a beat at his statement.
“I’m glad to hear it,” Nate, begrudgingly, said. “Well, keep enjoying your night.”
“You too,” Adam replied, before coming closer to the bar, turning himself enough to keep Nate from being able to fully see you. The bartender came back a moment later with your drinks, each of you picking up yours. You took a long drink from the glass.
“Girlfriend, huh?” you questioned, looking up at Adam. He appeared unfazed on the surface about your inquiry, but his eyes told a different story.
“Too far?”
“Just right,” you ensured, kissing him shortly, before walking away and back to the lane you had been assigned. Honestly, you were still trying to process through his sudden declaration and use of defined terms for what you were. While you appreciated it, liked it, you still hadn’t expected it. It did sound nice to hear. But was it too much? Too soon?
Not seconds later did you feel Adam’s hand on your hip, stopping you from punching in for your third game to start on the computer.
“Bren, I’m serious,” he stated, his voice close to your ear, as you set your drink down on the table. “I need you to tell me if that was too far.”
Apparently Insecure Adam was making another, rare, appearance. It would probably never cease to surprise you any time you heard worry or uncertainty in his tone. But you preferred this to Insolent Adam any day of the week.
“Do you regret saying it?”
“What? No.”
“Then…what’s the issue?” You turned yourself enough to face him. “You told me you weren’t messing around with me. And I’m clearly not looking to be with anyone else. So…what else would we call this? Friends with benefits?”
“…what benefits?”
“Don’t be an ass,” you demanded, causing the suggestive smirk to fall from his face after his ill-timed joked.
“Hey, Bren, you’re right,” Adam conceded gently. “I just…don’t want you to think I’m pushing you towards something you’re not ready for.”
“I’ve literally told my best friends to get fucked. I’m in Vegas alone with you. These are my choices,” you confirmed. “I know I haven’t been the best at being open about what I want and what’s in my head before. But I’m trying to be better. I’m trying to not second-guess and hesitate and worry. I’m trying to just do what feels right.”
“And this does?”
“Do you think I would be here if it didn’t?” you challenged.
“No.”
“So, then, boyfriend, can we get back to me kicking your ass at bowling?”
“We’re tied.”
“Not for long.”
Before you could turn back to the lane screen, Adam pulled you to him, kissing you. It wasn’t deep in the physical sense, but you knew it was meaningful. He needed you to feel, know, he meant this. There was now structure, titles, boundaries, instilled in your relationship. While part of you was still very nervous, the other part of you was thrilled. And you were trying your best to let the happy part overshadow anything else.
“My date today is gonna be so better than yours.”
“Excuse me?” You couldn’t decide what you wanted to be more offended by; the fact that he thought he had a better plan than you, or that he basically implied your date day had been bad.
“I’m just sayin’,” he shrugged, grinning over at you. You didn’t smile back.
“So yesterday sucked then?”
“What? No.”
“Then explain yourself.”
“I had fun yesterday, of course I did. I didn’t mean… I was just joking, Jesus,” he finally got out, looking entirely uncomfortable under your stare.
“Mmhmm,” you murmured, looking him up and down once, before turning to gaze out the cab’s window. You struggled to keep the smile from coming to your face as you felt him glancing over at you. Giving Adam a hard time was quickly becoming a new hobby for you. When he took your hand in his, lifting it to kiss the back of it, you broke and let out a giggle.
Your day had been another lazy one. Another lunch in the hotel. An afternoon nap. Some day-drinks in the hotel room.
Now that you found yourself driving away from the hotel, you already had a good idea that his plans for the night were far different than yours. The fact that he had told you to wear the short ruffled nude-gold dress and heels gave enough away to tell you that you wouldn’t be hanging at a bowling alley and bar tonight.
So when you pulled up to the Mirage hotel, you weren’t entirely shocked. But you were still very curious as to what you’d be doing here.
Adam was quick to take care of the cab and lead you in to the hotel. It was beautiful inside, you had to say; full of trees and different places to veer off to. You followed beside Adam into the hotel and along the side, arriving at a restaurant called Japonais. It was darker in atmosphere; mysterious, sexy, cool.
The hostess sat the two of you quickly, at a small table against the wall further inside. Within moments a waiter came over to welcome you, as well as take your drink order. You felt adventurous, trying one of their specialty cocktails, while Adam had settled on a Japanese beer.
Dinner was incredibly enjoyable. The food, specifically sushi, was amazing; the conversation flowing with ease. You and Adam spoke about your dreams for your careers, you worries about accomplishing these things. Hopes for your lives beyond wrestling; kids a desire for the both of you, along with a quiet suburban life.
You realized how many things you had known about him before, and how many you still had to learn.
Adam eventually informed you that you needed to leave to make the next event he had planned, which came sooner than you anticipated. Time had seemingly flown during dinner. Downing your third drink, he paid, before you headed back out in to the hotel. Walking with your arm tucked in to his, you eventually came upon a theater.
The words ‘The Beatles, Cirque Du Soleil’ read across the marquee.
“Adam, oh my god,” you gasped, taking in the large British flag projected on the ceiling above you.
“I figured you’d like this.”
“You should like it too,” you resolved, looking to him.
“It’s The Beatles. Who the hell doesn’t like The Beatles?”
“Fair,” you said with a giggle. Pulling him closer, you stood up straight to kiss him lightly a few times. “This is awesome. Thank you.”
“Anything to see you happy.” A blush came to your face almost instantly at his declaration. After giving your tickets, you made your way to your seats, to enjoy the show.
The show ended up being incredible. Every part of it amazed you. While you were fairly athletic as a wrestler, acrobats took the cake as far as flexibility and physical skill. You wished you could do many of the things they did. The music, the colors, the movements…it was absolutely breathtaking.
It ended far too soon in your opinion. You could have watched hours and hours more of it.
Adam guided you out of the theater, and back into the hotels’ atrium. He took you over to one of the bars, which was surrounded by palm trees and other bits of outdoorsy-décor. Sitting at a table, a waiter came over and took your drink orders.
You gushed to Adam about the show over drinks, how much you had enjoyed the entire experience, the entire night to be honest. Conversation changed to other topics; other bands you loved, concerts you’d been to, concerts you wanted to go to. Drinks continued to come, as topics in your talks changed to movies and friends and places you wanted to travel to.
A loud collection of people broke your concentration on one another as they made their way in to the bar just shy of midnight. Based on the short white dress, and the sloppy way a man hung on her, kissing her, you had one guess as to what had happened.
“I can’t believe people actually do that,” you commented, watching the couple giddily ordering drinks at the bar with their friends, some of their loud voices commenting on the ‘crazy wedding’ that had just occurred.
“To each their own,” Adam shrugged, looking amused at the drunken party of people. “How come you and Evan never got married?”
“Didn’t get around to it,” you replied, taking a strong drink from your glass, as he faced you again. The mention of your former love, surprisingly, didn’t hurt as much as you thought it would. “We didn’t want it to be all crazy and stressful, more than it had to be anyways. So we were just waiting for, I guess, my life and career to settle a bit. It never mattered to us though. I called him my husband more often than not.”
“You guys were engaged for a while….”
“Almost three years,” you clarified. “We waited until he was done with college for that part. But like I said, it just wasn’t a huge thing for us that we felt we had to do. We were together, everything was good as it was. Words and titles and legalities weren’t important then.”
“I genuinely didn’t know you guys weren’t married more than once,” Adam stated, causing a bittersweet grin to come to your face.
“A lot of people didn’t; still don’t probably. It just got easier to tell people we were than explain what we actually were. I mean, I didn’t even wear my ring a lot because I was always afraid of losing it on the road.”
“You do lose things, a lot.”
“So much,” you admitted, with a laugh. “Ya know, I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to talk about exes on dates.”
“…we’re really shitty at this.”
“The worst,” you grinned, and after a pause, spoke again. “So, Kelsey….”
“Ha, fucking, ha,” Adam muttered, taking his own long drink from his glass.
“Kidding!” You smiled widely at him, causing him to give you a fake, short smirk of his own, before a genuine smile came to his lips. The conversation fell off for a minute, as you each sipped more at your drinks. While it had been easy to talk about Evan, and joke about Adam’s past relationship, you knew that it also brought up feelings for both of you. Things that didn’t really need to be relevant right now. Things that shouldn’t be bothered with at this time.
“So, good couple days?”
“Great couple days,” you corrected, grateful for the subject change. “I needed this. We needed this.”
“Yea,” Adam agreed, his eyes catching yours. “I’m not ready for it to end, honestly.”
“We’ve still got tonight…and the morning,” you replied, biting at your lip. You knew your statement held promise, suggestion.
It was intentional.
“Let me know when you’re ready to head back,” he offered, his tone equally indicative of more to come.
“After this drink?”
“Sounds good.”
There was a solid chance you put some hurry into finishing your liquor. After closing out the tab, Adam tucked you into his side, heading out front to get a cab. Throughout the ride back to your hotel, you stayed against his side, your hand resting on his thigh.
Heading up to your room seemed to take longer than you wanted.
As soon as the door was closed, you had your shoes off, kicked somewhere against the wall. You reached behind yourself, sloppily tugging at the zipper on your dress.
“Help me,” you pouted, looking over your shoulder at Adam, who was slowly making his way in to the room, observing you. After toeing off his shoes, he eventually came to you, his hands gently pulling down the zipper, exposing your back to him.
Turning towards him, you immediately put your hands on his cheeks, pulling him into a strong kiss. Adam seemed to take a second to take stock of the situation, before his hands rested against your hips, pulling you flush against him.
It was barely moments before the kiss turned to tongue and teeth, emotion and urgency flowing between the two of you.
“Bren….” Your name was practically a breath from him as he parted slightly from you.
“Adam, don’t,” you requested, your hands slowly sliding down his shoulders, his torso, stopping as they met the waistband of his pants. “If I didn’t want this, I wouldn’t do this. You have to know that by now.”
“…I do,” he assured. “I just….”
“Don’t turn in to a gentleman now,” you smirked.
“I will always be that way to you,” Adam affirmed, his seriousness catching you off guard.
“…I know,” you recovered. “Which is why I’m confident in this. I trust you. I’m safe with you, right?”
“Always.”
“Then kiss me. And get this dress off of me,” you declared, your fingers curling into his belt, pulling him further into you. “Trust me when I say I want this.”
Instead of replying, Adam placed his mouth against yours. You had enough sense about you to reciprocate the action, your mouths opening quickly, tongues meeting the others. You felt his hands move up to the straps of your dress, pushing them down your arms, letting the material fall down your body.
Trying to keep things equal, you had your hands working open his belt within a moment, unbuttoning his pants, causing them to hang loosely on his hips. You let go of him, and moved your arms out of your dress, the clothing bunching at your hips. Adam moved his hands to continue pushing your dress down, as you put your hands so they cradled his jaw, pressing his lips closer into yours. You barely acknowledged the feeling of your dress falling to your feet, but you stepped out of it all the same, leaving you in just your lingerie.
While his mouth traveled down your cheek to your neck, you worked at unbuttoning his shirt. It seemed to happen far faster than you could comprehend; he slid out of his shirt, you got off your bra, he moved you so the back of your legs met the bed. He made sure you were eventually on your back, your feet just dangling over the edge of the mattress. Adam was above you quickly, his lips working smoothly down your chest, to your stomach.
When his kisses made it below your belly button, you stopped him, with a hand to his head gently, your stomach flexing tightly.
“…don’t,” you murmured, causing his eyes to come up and meet yours, his breath hot against your skin. “Don’t.”
“Sweetheart….”
“I just want you right now.”
Pushing yourself up onto your elbows, you guided Adam back up to meet you in a kiss. Gliding your hands down as far as you could, you pushed at his pants that were still hanging on to his body. He lifted himself from the bed, finishing what you started, leaving himself naked. Reaching towards you, he gently pulled at your panties, sliding them down your legs, leaving you equally exposed.
Your breath caught as you realized the situation. This had gotten really real. And as much as you wanted this, you couldn’t help but feel a miniscule amount of hesitance. This was a significant step, for you personally, and for the both of you in this relationship.
“Hey,” Adam got your attention, sensing your mood as he settled himself above you, causing your eyes to go to his. “It’s me, Bren.”
“That’s the issue,” you chuckled humorlessly. “How the fuck did you get so into my head?”
“Because I wanted to,” Adam stated. “But mostly because you let me.”
With that, and a high-pressured kiss, you felt him finally slide his way into you. It had been over a year now since you’d last had sex, and your body was certainly reminding your brain of that as he entered you. You knew the alcohol was dulling some of your feelings, but you were highly aware all the same.
What you knew, above it all, was that you did want this. And really, really liked this. Adam had the good grace to pause a moment, but when you let out a breath, he stopped being still. He felt really good moving within you, and when he put his thumb on your clit, you immediately arched up in to him, a moan bubbling up your throat.
“Shit,” you hummed, your nails involuntarily biting in to the skin of his shoulder.
“Yea?”
“Yes,” you gasped, screwing your eyes shut, as he increased the movement of his thumb. His lips found your neck again as you met him thrust for thrust.
You never wanted to forget what this felt like. You felt warm, tingly, all over; pleasantly taut physically but relaxed emotionally. Adam’s mouth on you, hands on you, body on you…you felt wanted, safe, cherished.
God, he was good.
“Bren…” his voice was broken, lust-loaded, as he came back up to kiss you deeply.
“Adam,” you practically whimpered.
“I got you, gorgeous,” he comforted, pushing in deeper somehow.
It was minutes later you felt your core tightening, as your hips pushed up firmly against his. Adam finished not too long after.
After each of you caught your breath, Adam moved himself to your side, your shoulders pressed against each other’s. Your heart was still beating fast, and you still felt small tingles trickling through your body. Adam seemed equally effected still beside you.
“Fuck,” you realized, breaking the silence. “I totally just put out after only the second date.”
“Slut.”
“Right back atcha,” you asserted. Adam laughed, turning his head, to which you moved your own, meeting his eyes.
“You were right; we’re shit at this.”
“At least we’re in it together?”
“Exactly,” he concurred. You couldn’t help but giggle, as a smile formed on Adam’s face. He moved closer, kissing you gently, before pulling you into his side, your head going to his chest.
This had been a busy two days. A lot have been done, a lot of been discussed, and a lot had changed. You were in a relationship. With a really good person. In spite of all the changes and what such things usually did to you, you felt calm. Content. Happy. You didn’t feel questioning and panicky like you tended to do.
This felt…right.
You never wanted to leave the bubble you’d made in Vegas with Adam.
I never saw it happening. I’d given up and given in. I just couldn’t take the hurt again - What a feeling. I didn’t have the strength to fight. Suddenly, you seemed so right. Me and you - What a feeling. What a feeling in my soul - Love burns brighter than sunshine. It’s brighter than sunshine.
Let the rain fall, I don’t care. I’m yours, and suddenly you’re mine. Suddenly, you’re mine.
UPDATE: Chapter Twelve is up.

How much does storage unit insurance cost?
I'm sure there are a billion variables but I'm just trying to get a loose ballpark figure. I'm renting a 5x5 climate controlled unit in one state but I live in another. I'm storing ~$5000 worth of stuff--black forest clocks my parents brought back from Germany in the late 40s/early 50s; figurines, etc., most more sentimental than material value. The unit itself is a name-brand secure facility in a decent neighborhood with gated access. I figure I'll have the unit about 6 months. Like I said, I'm just trying to get a rough idea, not an etched in stone quote. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. sbf""

Does affordable FAMILY Health insurance in California even exist? :( Desperate!?
Hello: My husband and I are in the process of moving on in our life and figuring out the next step. Rather than moving ahead now and planning later I would rather plan now then move ahead. Currently to add my spouse and a child to my insurance whether its PPO or HMO its over $1,200 for us 3!!! When looking outside of my employer at what is out there its over $800! We make about $4,000 a month but after rent, car payments, cell phones, car insurance, bills, groceries, and gas we are left with only about $800 a month to live off of. And that is not nearly enough for a baby with daycare and health insurance!! We obviously dont qualify for state funding or and government assistance. I am just wondering if anything exists out there for people like us! :( Unfortunately it seems things would be easier if we both worked at a low income job or not worked at all!! So here is my situation: I currently own a 2003 Toyota Matrix that I make payments on. In between the payments and the insurance and gas, it costs about $350 a month to have that car. For the last couple years I've been really interested in getting a motorcycle, specifically a newer Kawasaki. According to my research, I could find a Kawasaki Ninja 250cc for somewhere around $3000. My question is basically how much insurance do I need? Right now I have comprehensive coverage for my car so that if I'm in a wreck and it's totaled I can replace it. If I had a bike AND my car though, I don't want replacement coverage for a secondary vehicle (even one as cool as a motorcycle). Considering suing my car insurance company?
As we all know car insurance companies in the United States of America charge males more than females to drive a car based on real world studies . This is the equivalent of not hiring females because they may get pregnant and take a lot ofdays off... Because this is truly a real world study i conducted that males dont get pregnant as often as females. So I am highly tempted to bring this up with a lawyer or at least send a letter to my car insurance company, and i want them to hurt for it because frankly it pisses me off that i am being descriminated against. Further more, in europe, this practice of charging males more because they are more likely to drive is highly illegal. I am in no way a liberal democrat but if this sensitivity bullshit is going to stop descrimination than maybe they should give a **** about me before i start caring about them...""

Michigan Auto Insurance Premium almost twice as much as quote!?
I'll do my best to summarize my situation, and am using estimates for days and amounts... I received a quote for auto insurance for $590 for a 6 month period from an independent auto agent. When I received my insurance policy and premium price it way nearly double (over $1,100). I cancelled the policy within a week after receiving the huge increase in premiums. Because of the time it took for me to receive my new premium and the 5-7 days for me to cancel, I received a bill for an amount due of roughly $40.00. I previously had auto insurance through the company/agent but it was for a different vehicle and paid a month in advance. My question is, why am I responsible, and how am I responsible for the premium that is so much higher than what I was quoted? I didn't sign any paperwork, I called over the phone and had the agent switch the policy based on the new quote. Auto insurance played a huge factor in budgeting for the vehicle and I feel that I was ripped off. I should be getting a credit for the 10 days that I did not use, not having to pay more for the days I did use. Thanks for any advice you're able to provide!""

At a time when the word “futuristic” generally conjures dark and dystopian landscapes, Brandon Johnson’s mid-century modern aesthetic looks forward with a sense of optimism and nostalgia.
The first time Brandon Johnson got paid to draw, his illustrations appeared on flyers for punk bands appearing in Las Vegas—that is if, by “payment,” you mean free admission to performances by Agent Orange, Bad Religion, Seven Seconds and Social Distortion. Johnson, who is also known by the alter-ego Ragnar (his middle name), had watched his father make a living as a fine artist, but was more drawn to the commercial end of the spectrum.
No surprise, given a childhood spent watching Tex Avery cartoons, reading Mad magazine, and devouring Marvel titles like Fantastic Four, X-Men and The Hulk. Years later, major Hollywood studios including Disney, Sony, and Warner would pay him to dream up characters for prospective animation projects, and he’d get regular assignments from House of Secrets—a well-known comic book store that’s a stone’s throw from Disney’s studios. But like most creatives, he started at the bottom rung of the ladder.

“My first full-time gig doing design and illustration was in a screenprinting shop during the second birth of Vegas—the early to mid ’90s when it was all about getting families to visit, to broaden the appeal,” he says. “I’d lived in Vegas as a young teenager, and back then there was still so much of the old Vegas that people loved—the Rat Pack and young Elvis—which always appealed to me, but it was starting to disappear as the old casinos gave way to the The Mirage, Treasure Island, and The Luxor.”
Johnson spent his time slapping logos on shirts, bags and sunglasses, and quickly found himself yearning for more. So he applied to Art Center in Pasadena, and was accepted. And although he left Vegas behind, the diamonds, starbursts and other kitschy mid-century modern graphics stayed with him.
“As a kid, mid-century design always appealed to me, even though it existed years before I was born,” he says. “A lot of it comes from the hopeful outlook of postwar America, which runs counter to dark, dystopian idea of the future that we see so often now. Everything was so bright and promising—the colors, the architecture, the films, the fine art, the advertising, the design, the typography—all of it.”
You can see that optimism and brightness in Johnson’s illustrations of robots, aliens, ray guns and space ships—subjects that seem to be torn from the sketchpad of a teenage boy. And tacked to that teen’s bedroom walls, you might find selections from Johnson’s Fragmentia series: scantily-clad women posing in space-age living rooms, who possess the innocence of pin-ups from another era.
“Sometimes I think I’m stuck in this pubescent teenage fantasy of what’s cool and the way things should be, and I think that I really should have moved on by now,” he says. “But on the other hand, it’s authentic to me, it’s honest. “I’m not thinking ‘Oh, people will dig this, so this is what I’m gonna do—it appeals to me and it’s what I enjoy doing. I like to think my work has evolved over the years and matured, but I don’t want it to feel too manufactured, either. I try to let the work be what it is, so that it’s sincere.”
Pages from The Art of Fiction
As you’d expect, Johnson has found a healthy audience of fans at Comic-Con and Designer Con—a smaller gathering that began with urban vinyl community and now spans a much broader landscape. In recent years, he’s moved from two-dimensional art to three-dimensional projects, creating and licensing products for the home.
“Whenever I get an opportunity to experience something new, I just can’t pass it up,” he says. “I want to know what it’s like to design bedding or a chair or a car. It’s not about ego or even making more money, it’s just the creative aspect—I want to do the widest possible variety of projects.”
For a long time, Johnson found it difficult to turn down any opportunity that came his way, working 70-80-hour weeks, and even feeling guilty on vacations. Until one day, he recognized that he had to slow down. Much of his animation work for Cartoon Network, Disney, MTV, and Nickelodeon contributed to his exhaustion: Johnson says it wasn’t unusual to get a call from a studio on a Friday afternoon asking for characters in time for a Monday pitch meeting, which meant working nonstop through the weekend. After seeing too few of those projects actually come to fruition, he decided to step back from the animation projects, and only recently returned to them. (Much of the work appears in his book, The Art of Fiction.)

“Finding balance is always difficult for me,” he says. “If I’m doing something, I want to do it 100% all in, all the time, and think about nothing else. I envy people that can find balance so effortlessly. But for me it’s a lot of hand-wringing and second guessing: Should I be working more? Taking time off? In the past, I’d get away from the office, and really enjoy it, but after a couple days, I’d start thinking about projects I wanted to work on when I got back—now I’ve found when I’m away, I can completely shut off work, and I don’t think about it at all. So hopefully, I’m making some progress.”
Johnson now recharges his batteries by going fishing with his kids whenever he can and visiting national parks with his entire family. But he still manages to stay pretty busy. His to-do list following our interview? Create a character for a band’s album cover and merchandising sales, design a poster for House of Secrets, dream up some new color palettes for one of his best-selling textile patterns, and illustrate a movie poster for the sequel to a recent comedy hit that’s still under wraps.

Having a Leading Web CMS is Now Table Stakes
Since 2011, much has changed in the way the web — and, in a broader sense, digital experiences — has shaped not only how businesses compete, but also our expectations as individuals. I’m honored to share that Adobe has been recognized as a leader in The Forrester Wave™: Web Content Management Systems, Q1 2017.
Having a Leading Web Content Management System (CMS) Is Now Table Stakes. Today, it’s table stakes for global brands to have a leading web content management system as the backbone of their overall digital-transformation strategy. The fast-paced challenge of delivering uniquely compelling experiences that incite engagement and drive business growth is too demanding. After extensive research, Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee — the authors of The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies — noted the pace of digitization will continue to accelerate exponentially. The last thing a business can afford to do is make the mistake of choosing a web CMS that is “good enough” only to realize later, it is not. Having to pause to swap out your CMS because it doesn’t support your business goals or your customers’ expectations can be fatal.
In a world of connected consumers, and a projected 6.4 billion connected “things,” the ability to source the best content, manage it in a way that is both agile and aligned with the brand, deliver it to consumers at the moments that matter most, and continuously optimize this process better than others is a matter of survival.
And, the disruption is not isolated to any one industry. Expectations formed from our most recent experiences with retailers or stays at hotels influence our expectations of all the brands with which we do business. How many times have we all wondered, “Why can’t I apply for a mortgage or renew my driver’s license as easily as I can book my vacation during the holidays?”
While technological categories like “web CMS” help provide guidance on a set of needed capabilities, they also place blinders on crucial components needed to deliver great experiences. So, if having a leading web CMS is only the foundation, what else is critical to consider?
Content Is Still King, and Its Domain Is Expanding. Regardless of what business you are in, or what device you have in your hand, the experience is only as compelling as the content. We recognized this critical need. Many of the innovations in Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) focus on helping to source the best content to fuel the management part of a web-content management system.
Features such as a template editor make it easier for more people within an organization to compose experiences and share the compositions that are working across regions and brands. We’ve also dedicated a significant amount of time to making it easier to build engaging web mobile web/responsive web as de facto with prebuilt, responsive-design templates and drag-and-drop capabilities. The acquisition of Livefyre in 2016 — now part of Adobe Experience Manager — has made it possible for marketers who need to power content-hungry connections to source user-generated content. For example, Craftsman was able to gather incredible user-generated content comprising do-it-yourself (DIY) projects and inspiration sources from across the web, leading to visitors spending six times longer onsite as well as a 190-percent increase in digital memberships.
It’s not just limited to marketing content either. What began as a need in marketing is now seeping into other customer-facing departments. For example, AEM now supports technical-communication content, which is critical to any business — such as manufacturing and high-tech companies — with complex products requiring post-sales support and knowledge. We have also made it easier to mobilize this content for both consumers and customer-facing employees. Mirum’s store-associate app, for instance, enables communications between headquarters and employees at retail-store locations to provide real-time training and merchandising information that is consistent across online and in-store shopping experiences.
Data: How Does the Network Effect Impact Customer Insights? As we get better at creating and sourcing the most compelling content, we also must ensure that we understand what people want at each moment of interaction. In AEM, we have made essential analytics and targeting capabilities part of AEM’s core cloud services.
These capabilities are exposed within the AEM user interface, allowing brands to start off simply and quickly in the areas of listening and personalization. When they are ready to extend to richer capabilities, they can expand to the market-leading capabilities of Adobe Analytics — such as Analysis Workspace — and Adobe Target without missing a beat.
But, it’s not only about drawing insights from one’s own brand data. Since Adobe Marketing Cloud now processes over 51-trillion transactions a year, we can harness the collective trends to benchmark what’s happening across industries, helping brands make better decisions regarding where to invest next in their digital-transformation journeys.
Using online shopping as a benchmark, mobile peaked at 26 percent — $1.93 billion — of online sales on Black Friday during the 2013 holiday season. Overall, Thanksgiving Day online sales grew 18 percent, year-over-year, to hit $1.06 billion. We started to see early signs demonstrating the importance of omnichannel marketing, with traditional brick-and-click retailers outselling their online-only competitors at nearly a three-to-one ratio. Average cart spend was holding steady at $139 per completed sale. (Source: Adobe Digital Insights)
Fast-forward to this past holiday season. Black Friday drew in $3.34 billion in sales, while online sales hit $1.93 billion on Thanksgiving Day, and Cyber Monday hit a new record with the largest online sales date ever at $3.39 billion (Source: Adobe Digital Insights). We also began providing our customers and the industry more broadly with the Adobe Digital Price Index (DPI).
Adobe Applies Advanced Science in the Chemistry of Great Experiences. What’s even more interesting about the prior data is that the team here at Adobe was able to not only report actual results one day later, but also have amazingly accurate predictive models ahead of the holiday shopping season.
The sheer volume of content and data demands the help of machines to process and draw out the best recommended insights or actions to take. Adobe has been quietly innovating in the area of machine learning for some time, and this past November, we introduced Adobe Sensei — advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning focused on tackling the most complex digital-experience challenges. It taps into Adobe’s heritage in creativity, documents, and marketing and takes advantage of trillions of content and data points. For example, smart tags in AEM are already powered by Adobe Sensei.
You and Your Organization Are the Final Elements. No digital-transformation milestone was ever reached without the vision, imagination, and perseverance of individuals who saw digital as the new frontier. There are many ways to learn more about AEM and engage with the community of brands around the world to learn how they’re driving successful customer experiences using AEM.
Adobe Summit will kick off in Las Vegas (North America) and London (Europe, Middle-East, and Africa) in the beginning of 2017. Adobe Symposium will be coming to India and Australia. The second-annual virtual AEM developer conference, IMMERSE, will be held May 15–19 across three time zones.
Your organization can also enroll in training classes from our Adobe Digital Learning Services or get the All Access Learning Pass.
If you want to get started and need more guidance, we are fortunate to have a great community of partners — around the world and in your neighborhood — to help you.
Many of our partners, while they have worked several years with marquee brands on optimizing a mature digital-transformation effort, have also learned and are making it easier to get started quickly with AEM.
