Opening the 2024 Howliday draculaura and clawd!

i got these two preordered a little bit back, when i realized that they were selling faster than say, winter clawdeen and would probably not go on sale like her before they were gone. so i preordered them, and once the 26 hit they were extremely quick to get to me, with me getting them shipped and delivered same day. here they are in box!

i am planning on putting this adorable box into storage so i was more careful in opening it up. on the back we have the collector certificate, as well as two stands

once again, we have more of these infuriatingly terrible plastic head tabs. i’m gonna need them to find some other way to do this, because every time i’m scared that i’m going to cut a dolls hair. they’re the worst.

here’s them freed from their prison! first impressions are, as usual, the ghouls outsell the mansters, unfortunately. however, i do still really enjoy what they’ve gone with for this clawd. tbf bell bottoms and funky patterns are such a serve, and more interesting that the safer choice of a suit or something. i think i would have gone with black for the mesh top, though. it might make it a little more cohesive. the other thing is i feel like clawd needs just one more accessory. maybe a gold necklace? just something. for draculaura i absolutely love her outfit as well, but honestly i though it might have been really cute if the red bodice of her dress was the same pattern as one of clawds clothing pieces too. i really love the silhouette of this dress a lot, though.

the shoes. they’re very detailed molds. with lots of stitch detailing on clawd’s adb a moon detail on the side, and draculauras heel-less heels are very valentines but make it spiderweb. with of course, adorable bat wings. the shoes are both completely solid colors, however.

here’s a random thing i was seeing that i wanted to make sure i made a note of. in clawds stock images, his wrists were edited to look like they were smooth and unarticulated. they are articulated, however, so it seems like kind of a bizarre choice on the photo editors part. draculaura’s hands are cast in black to give the appearance of gloves, with little plastic cuffs on her arms. they do not have a gap when you pull them down.

here’s the accessories! they come with a rose and a coffin-shaped gift box, a bag for draculaura, and a parasol. also rubber banded in like accessories were these little paper valentines hearts, though i’m not sure what to do with them. they’re very cute, though, and clawds one to draculaura is also for her birthday, which is valentine’s day!

with accessories! i couldn’t really find a good way for clawd to hold the box, but he holds the roses fine. the parasol comes with an additional piece that attaches to the stand to hold it up, so that draculaura can look like she’s carrying it.

facesss! clawd has a longer mohawk of short curly hair, while the sides are flocked. i think i might have liked to see a little facial hair on him? like maybe some painted sideburn details. or even some more intense eye makeup. he does look a little bit plain

draculaura! her signature heart has a moon in it for clawd, which is super adorable. i love the lip colors they went with for her as well,

and that’s the 2024 valentines howliday two pack! faboolous pets drac has found a new spot at the bottom shelf, where i’ve given clawdeen back to her, since if clawd can come to the draculaura shelf clawdeen is allowed as well. they’re not chilling on the bottom and i’ve decided the top shelf will have my g1 style ghouls on it for now. thanks for reading!

Boring stuff out of the way first; she was on Amazon for $44.99 USD. She's currently on a 7% off sale so you can get the set for $41.85 USD.

The back of the box shows off some styling ideas as well as a little blurb in multiple languages.

The top of the box has a nifty little inventory of all the things contained within.

I didn't take any pictures of the inside but the doll, furniture and accessories were packaged very simply; the accessories were inside white paper bags, the furniture was strapped in to fit and Clawdeen had her own compartment on the left side. Not a display packaging obviously, since the box itself has no clear portions. On that note, I think the QC for facial screenings has gotten better, since Skulltimate Secrets and now this were packaged with no way to see the doll until you open the packaging. all the Skulltimate secrets dolls and this Clawdeen have perfect faces.

This is how Clawdeen was packaged: wearing her purple jumpsuit, green belt, green earrings and the pink translucent booties.

The doll herself does in fact have the torso joint. The lighting in my room is a little yellow, so you can't see it clearly, but her lid and undereye are lavender, with a magenta crease. Her lips are a much more saturated fuchsia red in real life. her hair is a berry color, with the light lavender color she typically gets. On the subject of her hair...

...I am not an expert, i am just a doll-collecting homosexual, but it does NOT feel like the same kind of hair texture every other Clawdeen has. I can't be sure if its nylon or saran or whatever, but it feels denser and waxier than the polypropolene. It wasn't as tangled before or after a wash, and the ends weren't as frayed.

You can see how it washed. This does NOT look the same as my other Clawdeens I washed, so take that as you will. I still need to reset the curl pattern, of course.

On to the clothing. The jumpsuit is actually a pretty heavy and dense denim, in this purple leopard print with lavender and blue spots, and magenta and black slash marks. It has short, cuffed sleeves and a pointed shirt collar, and cuffs on the hem of the pant legs. the waist has lime stitching and faux pockets.

All of Clawdeens belts have 3 different closure holes, so they can be worn tighter or looser at your discretion. This lime green belt has a skullette buckle and a very long trailing tail.

The booties are a light fuchsia with spikes on the top, and the heels are crescent moons. I know a lot of new MH shoes have interesting detailing on the soles, but these don't, probably because they're clear.

I'm gonna do the outfit pieces in groups. The sweater is yellow, with blue, white and purple circle detailing. The chest has an aqua triangle, the same color as the slash marks. The collar, cuffs and hem are the same blue as the circles on the sweater.

The tank top looked black at first, but it actually has a very subtle bleach dye effect that looks like mist in the dark, it's pretty nice irl. The shirt also has a tri-moon vinyl on it, with a howling wolf on the center full moon.

The green skirt is a lighter weight denim than the jump suit, with darker green spots and a frayed hem under a stitch. The cupcake skirt is in a metallic fabric with a slight blue shift; its really pretty in person. The waist is black elastic and the skirt is covered with criss-crossing claw marks.

The dress is a one-shoulder thigh length ruched number. Because of the design, it doesn't look like much on a hanger but it sings on the doll. The dress is blue with purple and pink leopard spots.

The scarf is hot pink with gold metallic flecks. The stole is a softer pink.

If you're insane like me and already have Skulltimate Secrets Clawdeen, this bucket hat should look familiar. It's the same mold in a periwinkle blue, sans the leopard spots. The canvas and stitch molding is REALLY nice.

I thought the boots had layers of fur, but theyre actually molded to look like slouchy fabric boots, with a repeating skullette pattern. The heels are lined in spikes, and theres a tie molded at the top.

The lime sneakers are the exact same mold as Ghoul Spirit Clawdeen, but in a solid green.

The set also comes with 5 hangers for extra outfits. They're kind of swirly and dainty looking, more like g1 Catrine. They come in pink, lavender, purple, blue and green.

Our girl comes with a lot of accessories! The lime green necklace, again, is the same mold as one that comes with Skulltimate Sectrets Clawdeen. Its a short chain with three dangling crescent moons, with a longer rope chain under that. The magenta necklace and choker are recast from her g3 signature; a circular moon pendant on a crescent moon chain, paired with a star choker.

The gold fur bangle is reused from her Ghoul Spirit doll. The magenta spiked cuff and purple cuff are new though. The magenta one is a simple spiked band while the purple has teeth detailing all around it, I did a terrible job photographing these so if anyone wants any clearer pics just let me know lmao.

The glasses are her signature glasses, in black. The magenta comb is a tiger-striped crescent moon with a studded handle.

The long gold piece is a hair barrette that says MONSTER. The long purple piece is a three-finger ring with the triple moon motif on it.

The black earring is a double crescent moon. IIRC this appeared first on Ghoul Spirit from this gen. The blue hoop with the dangling moon is also from Ghoul Spirit.

I didn't take close up picks of hem, but the green earings are a spiked hoop and a triple moon, recast from her signature earrings.

The gold belt has a double crescent moon buckle, mimicking the Gucci logo:

Finally, her bag is a large tote or shopping bag, covered in the same skullette molding as her boots. The green "HOWL" is flanked by pink bands with small crescent moons, and the moon shaped handles have tooth details.

The furniture she comes with are really cute and would look ADORABLE with her bedroom playset. The coffin-shaped clothing rack is studded, with the triple moon detail at the top. At the bottom are purple trays, and the lavender wheels do function.

The moon vanity has a circular mirror with two small shelves, a moon phases detail on the faux-drawer, and a moon shaped foot.

The pink stool has a starburst on the foot and the seat is molded to look like its padded or has draped pleats.

Instead of sleeping or doing anything else productive, I'm gonna talk about Monster High.

So like. We all know. About the new generation. I'm gonna get out all my complaining here: wahhhh I don't liiiike it, it's not like the original!!

Okay, that's done. What can we do about it? Nothing. But I can DREAM.

So in the shower, I was just thinking: "This doesn't feel like Monster High. It feels like a yuppie middle school. This is Monster Middle." and is it mostly just because all the characters look like babies? yeah. Also from what I've seen of it... it feels like none of the characters are allowed to be mean. If you're gonna set something in high school, where are the catty mean girls?? the bull-headed bullies?

BUT THEN BUT THEN--- so my major problem is that the characters don't really feel like themselves. I would like them better if they were their own original characters, not burdened with the titles of their forefathers.

Forefathers. Foremothers. Foreparents.

Now, picture you are tied to a chair and I'm showing you my corkboard right now.

Imagine how cool it would be if they made the reboot about the children of the originals! So many fusions also!!

The new Cleo is so nice because she's not actually Cleo, she's the daughter of Cleo de Nile and Deuce Gorgon. Hell, you could keep the name if you want, have her be Cleo II, that fits the original Cleo's vanity. Deuce's kind personality mellows out Cleo's diva and we get this character I cannot believe they tried to pass for THE Cleo de Nile ijoergpoi.

The new Draculaura's whole witch thing doesn't really make sense to me and it never will. (especially her apparently being the bio daughter of Dracula now when she was previously adopted-- also Dracula is scared of witches or smth but if you READ THE BOOK HE IS A SORCERER) Buuuut if Draculaura and Clawd had a daughter and she just happened to be into witchcraft, sick dude. Also, even though it's such an obvious fusion I don't think Mattel ever did a Vampire/Werewolf hybrid. Now is the time, people!!

I don't think Clawdeen would really have children of her own? She feels like... a lesbian aunt. She and her wife are career women and shower Draculaura and Clawd's kids with gifts. Maybe Clawdeen's married to a witch and that's why their niece became so enamoured with witchcraft.

New Frankie would be made by Old Frankie in a lab and... with that robo leg... and blue highlights... hear me out... So one time speaking with a friend, we were kinda spitballing who would be a good match for Frankie with her endless line of suitors... I suggested hmmm maybe Robecca Steam?? I just think it'd be neat! Imagine them married and in the lab piecing together their perfect child ahhhh. Cute?? Right??

It's not a perfect solution because we have so many characters to reckon with. Maybe some drama from older fans mad that their pairing is not canon... but that's just already true. So many ships, characterizations, and backstories have been scrapped :(((.

like... not all of my thoughts can fit into this post but CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY ERASED MY SONS JACKSON AND HOLT??? and made Clawdeen half-human (bitch werewolves are already half-human what the fuck) so they could slap Jackson's/Holt's conflict onto her. They couldn't handle my sons' autistic swagger.

So I just came up with a Gen 1 fanmade line

I call it "Fright at NecroCon". I got inspired by the SDCC Exclusive Ghoulia doll and my own experiences at comic conventions. As a fanatic, there's way more to comic conventions than just comics, and I plan to share all the aspects... Monster High edition.

The line would have the following characters:

Ghoulia: She's the biggest comic book lover in the franchise, and we know she's a big DeadFast fan. We know her SDCC doll has her all dressed up in a DeadFast cosplay, complete with an action, tote bag, and comic. My NecroCon doll is kinda a mix between a rerelease version of the SDCC doll with having a DeadFast cosplay dress, sheer black leggings and boots and something a bit more original with red/black highlights in her hair and a DeadFast mask (it goes over her head as opposed to the SDCC's eye mask). For accessories, she comes with a poster of DeadFast (her School Club fashion pack has a DeadFast action figure and comic, so those accessories could be a perfect accompaniment with this fan doll).

Clawdeen: To channel the cosplay aspect of comic conventions, Clawdeen is included. To make a callback to the SDCC Cerise Wolf doll from Ever After High, Clawdeen has a cosplay heavily inspired by this doll, but it has our favorite wolf fashionista's color palette (black, gold, purple, green). This Clawdeen doll will also come with a doll-sized card that has her social media information (nodding to any cosplayers who hand out information cards)

Frankie: I also got inspired by the Bride of Frankenstein Skullector dolls we got a while ago, but Frankie is in the NecroCon fan line to represent a fan's first experience. I'm channeling my first con experience, because I went in cosplay and Frankie would be in a cosplay inspired by her mother! So that means Frankie will have a hairstyle/makeover similar to her monster mom and iconic bride. Been thinking about throwing Jackson into the mix dressed in a Frankenstein monster cosplay (as a 2-pack?). Frankie would also have a miniature map of the NecroCon center since this is her first convention!

Kjersti: Gonna give a character that only had ONE doll some recognition in this fan line. We know that Kjersti is a very skilled gamer, and video games can often be seen in comic conventions. She'd come with her own game controller and coffin-shaped video game box with a disc (much like Dead Tired Draculaura's accessory).

Elissabat: We know celebrity guests are big in comic conventions, so it made sense to me to have Elissabat be featured. Aside from comic book artists, celebrities like movie stars are guests at cons, and Elissabat (aka Veronica von Vamp) is our special NecroCon guest. She'd come with a few images related to her Vampire Heart films as prints, one of which would be signed. But Elissabat can't provide autographs to all the monster fans without a pen.

Draculaura: I wanted to throw in Draculaura to represent the casual fan, the ones who don't typically dress up in cosplay. I want to have an excuse to have Lala and Elissabat be in the same line. Our favorite vegan vampire comes wearing a Vampire Heart t-shirt and for accessories, a picture with and autograph from Elissabat!

Catrine: Representing the artists by having Catrine be a part of the NecroCon line. We were robbed of having paintings be included with her dolls, and I'm remedying that by giving her some paintings/art pieces she did and will be selling at the convention.

Slo-Mo: I just thought it'd be cute to include Slo-Mo and surprise Ghoulia by going to NecroCon in a full on DeadFast cosplay. 🥺

Each doll would also come with their iCoffin, a badge/lanyard (like with the Music Festival line), and a NecroCon tote bag. And in the box, a poster of the characters in their NecroCon looks for you.

This was just a fun idea/vision I had. I'm not sure if I'll do more, but let me know if you want to hear my other visions for fanmade Gen 1 doll lines. What other characters would you like to see be a part of this fanmade line?

Sorry just looking back at it, I really do think G3 sacrificed having good fashion in order to have good character design. Which like, if it was just the cartoons they were rebooting, then like sure. But all I'm saying if any other doll brand in the year of our lord 2023/2022 come out with tye-die shorts with frills we would have laughed them off the market but it's Monster High so it's fine

I think it succeeds a lot at times, for example, no matter how much I don't like G3 Clawdeen, not gonna lie, they really got that 'quirky protag girl' vibe incredibly well with her. Or how the G3 Werecat Twins personalities show so strongly though their designs, but dear god WTF is Meowlody wearing.

But on the other hand it's not like good character design and fashion are antithetical to each other. Like not only was this the reason G1 Monster High got so popular (that and it's gothicism) but G3 HAS put out nice looking fashion pieces before!

like UGH my bleeding gory heart. And the way Apollo is so sweet in everything. Like I can see his shock and concern. He was probably just so stunned and worried he was hurting Toralei accidentally or thinking he’s hurting her.

And the way toralei says something teasing and immediately assumes she made a grave mistake so she tries to place a hand to her mouth but Clawdeen catches it so smoothly and nonchalantly and gives her kisses. And the way she’s so embarrassed in front of her dad. But Apollo just puts a hand over his eyes and collects the shards.

and the way when he’s gone Toralei gives Clawdeen a super big kiss and gets somewhat annoyed they have to stop just as it gets good.

And the way Toralei says it could be worse and Clawdeen is just stunned cause how the fuck could it go worse.

and the way earlier Toralei apologizes for flinching. Cause she’s probably been told flinching is bad. And the way she says ‘uncouth’ cause she’s trying to be ultra respectful and is so fucking nervous. And the way she’s trying to help by bringing in the salad bowl. And the way she’s trying to hard to be respectful and talk nicely and apologize for her mother and do it all with nonchalance. And the way her hands are shaking and she thinks no one notices but they do. And the way she’s just so fucking traumatized and she just needs to be hugged by Clawdeen so tightly and Mr. Apollo better adopt her right this instant or I am fuckinb rioting cause she literally deserves so much more and I love her and fuck I loved this fic like what the fuck was I talking about earlier this fic was beautiful and it made my heart cry and it’s making me extra excited for your next fics cause HOLY FUCKING SHIT you write toralei so fuckibg well for her not even being your favorite character. 🍫: what's your favorite and least favorite part of editing?

My favorite part is definitely playing with colors. Recently, For maybe a few weeks at a time, I'll do a challenge where someone other than me will choose a color scheme and a character for me to make a set for. I've only done it twice (third time coming soon!) but I liked working with a set of colors that probably wouldn't be my first choice. Another thing I like is coming up with designs!

Now my least favorite part use to be picking pictures to work with and that still can get a bit tedious, but now it's deciding on the final result. I'm not a perfectionist in the slightest, but I still like my edits to look nice. 9/10 I don't fret over what my edit looks like, but sometimes that little tiny piece of me will be "Are you sure this is good enough?" and I HATE it.

🌸: what's your favorite and least favorite edit you've made?

As usually, my favorites do change! It's hard to keep a favorite or a least one! Hmm. Okay, surprisingly, it's gonna be a BNHA edit, I'll be fair.

The whole set where this is from is amazing, so it's hard choosing one, but oh my gosh I love this so much! I was actually through a Monster High binge watch since May and of course, I had to do my favorite character Clawdeen (who also happens to be lesbian apparently). Working with the lesbian color palette was also fun because I always through that the colors were just so beautiful together.

(But if I was going to choose a BNHA fave it's a tie between the bi Denki Icons, the Pan Mina Icons and the Bi Uraraka icons.)

Now a least favorite... okay, this time it's a BNHA edit and I don't know what it is about Shoto but I always have a hard time doing any edits for him.

This is actually the FOURTH result. I have 3 prototypes before I settled on this one. I like this one lots, but I also felt like I could have done more. I don't know.

🎶: do you listen to music while editing?

I do! I find when I listen to music, it gets me more in a creative mood. Helps me visualize how I want the colors to look and whatnot. I actually elaborate more on that here from the last time I was asked this!

🩰: are there any characters or sources that you find difficulty editing?

I find characters that have little pictures on them difficult to work with, as well as not really popular fandoms.

Example, recently I did Rock Lock icons and because he's not that popular of a character (which sucks because he's like in the top three of my favorite Pros and he's an actual DAD), it was hard to find pictures of him. However, I ended up rewatching most of season 4 and I had fun doing that so no problem there!

Another character is... Meeshell from Ever After High. I couldn't find a lot of pictures of her, so again, I ended up rewatching EAH episodes for her.

It's really just time consuming that makes having to do screenshots for yourself that makes it difficult sometimes.

Monster High G3 - Frankie Stein - Signature Doll

One of my faves from G1 has made their way to become, yet again, one of my faves in the current gen!

When the dolls first got leaked by that Coffin Bean playset box photo, Frankie was the one I got extremely excited for. I'm a sucker for the preppy-punk aesthetic, and I think Frankie nails that well enough! I'd have preferred a darker blue color scheme but it's honestly a non-issue. I get that the neon blue, pink, and lime colors suit their personality way more. I'm glad it's mostly four colors and just some hints of a fifth one so it's not as busy as Clawdeen's color scheme.

The inclusion of the prosthetic leg makes total sense for the kind of monster they are. Even the little doodles on the leg are nice finishing touches and really brings out their personality. I know the body prints on the earlier batches rubbed off pretty easily, but mine still haven't so I'm thankful. Her lower leg, however, has discolored into a yellowish tint, but I can't capture the accurate color on camera. I don't know if it's because of the print or if the material is just different from the upper legs, but it does bother me a bit. They eyebrow piercing though!!!

The shoes are okay. It leaves a lot to be desired but it's still coherent to their aesthetic. I do wish they were black instead of pink, because like the color of Clawdeen's shoes, they're kind of disconnected from the main outfit.

All of Frankie's accessories are wonderful. The lightning bolt motif is pretty apparent on almost every item, but I don't mind it! This is the core doll so I appreciate that they're introducing their motifs strongly. The clear lightning bolt backpack with the keychain is a fun but I think the little Instax camera steals its thunder (lol) because it's easier to put on them than the other. I appreciate that it came with the photos too! It doesn't come with a little ring for the doll to hold it though, so it's just gonna hang around like a bag.

For the smaller accessories, they come with a pair of clear shades with some lightning details molded on the frames. It's a lot darker on the actual doll but I'm glad it's still transparent enough to show their eyes! I am kinda bummed that they missed out on their water bottle though. I'd have swapped the screechza for it, for sure. They also come with their iCoffin that's molded with a personal touch of electricity.

The jacket becomes rather difficult to put on at times. It's tailored large enough to fit the shirt sleeves but I could never fit it enough for the shoulders to sit correctly. I still appreciate the additional clothing piece! There's definitely some mix and match potential here, but I barely use it unless I remove the shirt and keep their vest on, or wrap it around their waist.

Here's Frankie next to their budget version! Personally, I prefer the budget version because I think the outfit structure is more unique and the shoes are way more detailed than the core version. They also came with a handbag in this one, which I prefer a lot more than the backpack. The shoes also capture the creativity that MH shoes typically have, and they come with some dangling lightning bolts in the back! The pink glasses are from a different doll but I thought the colors complement the shoes more than the blue ones.

Overall, I was not disappointed with signature Frankie. They're still one of my top three signature dolls and my opinion has not changed from when I saw the leak to when I had them in my hands. While I still like the budget version better, this one has more restyling potential and I feel like all their accessories are definitely worth their inclusions.

Bonus photo! I restyled them recently, and this is their outfit when they're out on a little lunch date with Cleo. That hairclip is holding on for dear life lmao.

“And you’re sure you can handle this?” You say as you twirl your car keys in your hand.

“O-Of course I c-can,” Toby smiles as the sun begins to peak over the horizon. He nods for you to get going. “Y-You’re gonna be l-late,” he says before pressing a kiss to the tip of your nose.

You sigh and pepper kisses to your husband’s face, not wanting to leave him or your little one. She’s only three years old. You were able to spend so much time with her due to working at home, but now, it’s time for you to go back, and that means leaving both Toby and little Marigold. “Okay, okay,” you relent, pressing another kiss to Toby’s lips. “I’ll be thinking of you two the whole day.”

“And us y-you,” he says as he opens the door for you.

You gently caress his face before heading out the door, ready to start back at work after a year of being at home. It’s quite awkward, you must admit.

And that leaves Toby with Marigold, who soon, will be going over to a friend’s house for a playdate. He needs to actually wake up the sleeping princess though.

Quietly, Toby creeps up the stairs to Marigold’s room, ready to get her up for the day only to see her sleepily rubbing her eyes as she begins to sit up in her bed. “Daddy?” She calls out, still yawning and sleepy.

The brown haired man smiles, no, beams, as he lightly knocks on her door. “I’m c-coming in,” he announces.

“Please do,” she says in that adorable little voice. She watches as her father opens her door, smiling and ready to help her get ready. “Where’s mommy?”

“She h-had to g-go back into w-w-work today,” he says as he scoops her up out of bed and places her back onto the floor, watching as she toddles around to her drawers. “So, i-it’s just m-m-me and you t-today.”

Marigold gasps as she opens her drawers up, rummaging for an outfit she knows you would like. She stuffs the clothes in her arms and then marches to the bed, laying them out. “Do you think this is mommy approved?”

“It is v-very mommy a-approved. Should w-w-we send a picture t-to her once y-you’re all dressed?”

Marigold thinks it over for a moment or two before nodding vigorously. “Go get your phone, I will get dressed,” she says in a very serious tone, making Toby bite his lip in how adorable you are.

Toby nods in approval, briefly eyeing his daughter to ensure she’s good to go before heading back to the bedroom to get his phone. By the time he returns, Marigold has dressed herself! He’s proud of her every moment she breathes. “N-Nice job,” he compliments. “Strike a p-pose for me, l-little lady,” he says as Marigold giggles.

She strikes her own little pose, something cute she’s seen you do hundreds of times before, and bursts into a fit of giggles as Toby takes a picture of her.

He sends it to you without a second thought before slipping his phone in his pocket. “B-Breakfast time?”

Marigold nods vigorously once more and begins to rush downstairs, taking her father’s index finger into her small hand and practically dragging him along downstairs to the kitchen. She climbs her way up to her seat and sits down.

“W-What are you thinking f-for breakfast?”

“Something sweet!”

“S-Sweet,” Toby hums. “P-Pancakes with c-c-chocolate chips sound good?” He asks, already reaching for the ingredients. He briefly looks over his shoulder to see her nodding. He gets to work, making sure to put a little cup of fruit and a glass of chocolate milk on the table for her.

For a three year old, Marigold is leagues ahead of everyone else. She’s verbose, and careful, and is just way above her level.

It’s something both you and Toby are immensely proud of.

It doesn’t take too long for Marigold to start talking about her playdate.

“We’re gonna have so much fun,” she rattles off. “She’s my best friend.”

“Y-Your best f-friend? S-So soon?” He hums as he flips the pancakes. They’re almost done. He can hear Marigold feasting on the blueberries.

“Uh-huh!” She beams. “She said we’re gonna be friends forever.”

“A-Are you now?” He chuckles as he puts the chocolate chip pancakes on a plate, carefully depositing them to his daughter who looks up at him with stars in her eyes.

Marigold giggles a yes as her father places the plate in front of her.

Toby sits next to her and cuts the pancakes up into little bite sized pieces for her before reminding her that the food is hot, and for just a moment or so, she’s not speaking, she’s just eating. He’s never seen her so excited to hang out with someone before. She’s been on tons of playdates before. He’s never heard about this girl before, Silvia? Was that it?

“Silvia has Monster High dolls,” Marigold continues after downing some of her chocolate milk.

“Which o-one is your f-f-favorite?” Toby almost hates to admit how well he knows these characters from watching the little movies and promotional materials for them.

“Hmmmm… I like Clawdeen,” she answers thoughtfully. “You?”

“Hands d-down Draculaura.”

Marigold grins, “that’s Silvia’s favorite too.” There’s something behind that angelic gaze, and it makes Toby sigh in that way only parents do when they feel their babies are growing up too fast.

Toby chuckles and ruffles her hair for a moment before feeling a buzz in his pocket. “F-Finish up and w-we’ll head o-over to her p-place, yeah?” He says as Marigold begins to eat even faster. He smiles and pulls his phone out of his pocket.

Reader: oh my goodness, she’s so adorable!! And she dressed herself?? I’m gonna cry-

Reader: literally give her ALL MY LOVE

Toby: already done, though I think we may or may not have some competition

Toby: well, as much as a 3 yo can compete

Reader: What makes you say that???

Toby: Silvia, currently

Reader: hjfgjgjj she’s been going on about that girl for WEEKS

Reader: it’s literally all she ever talks about do you know what it’s like trying to wrangle that girl into bed when she insists the princesses names are Marigold and Silvia

Reader: it is damn near every night

Toby: She has?? What??

Reader: omfg just take her on her playdate and you’ll see

Toby clicks his phone back into sleep mode before gazing at his daughter as she finishes her food. He leans over and presses a kiss to the side of her head. “Love you,” he murmurs as she giggles under her father’s touch.

Marigold ensures she’s done chewing before giggling openly. “Love you too, daddy!” She looks up at him with sweet, doe eyes. “To the moon and back?”

Toby takes a deep breath in and smiles softly, pressing yet another kiss to the crown of her head. “To the moon and back.”

Another day of doing exactly what I wanted to do...I can hardly wait for school to start...how many times would I need to write that line before I started to believe it?

July 15

It rained today which totally wrecked my plans to try out my new skate deck. I sat on the porch turning flies into pebbles until mom yelled that they were putting dents in the deck...wish this rain would hurry up and stop.

July 16

Dude - I love mom’s killer Greek food but that’s like ALL she ever cooks. I wanted to make this scary good ghoulash recipe I found but mom said it wasn’t “a proper meal for a growing boy”. Mom rocks and all but sometimes she acts like I’m still 10 years old or something.

Ghoulash

2 pounds growled beef

1 small onion; guillotined

1/2 mean smell pepper; drawn and quartered

1 jar monsternara sauce

8 ounces uncrooked elbow macaroni

1/2 cup water

1 tablespoon grrrlic salt

1/2 teaspoon black plague pepper

July 18

Went to the park to try and find a pickup game of casketball but there was nobody on the courts except some lame human kid. I was gonna slide out of there but he asked if I wanted to play some one on one. I figured it wouldn’t take long to make him look like a statue out there but I was wrong. He had a scary good jump shot and even crossed me over a couple times. I had just started to play really hard when my glasses got knocked off and broke. Now I have to figure out a way to get home without stoning someone but dude just too off his shades and handed them over to me. He said to keep them until I got home and he’d get them later. Told me his name is Jackson Jekyll. He said he wants a rematch. I told him any time, any place. Not a bad guy... for a human.

August 18

Perseus ate all of mom’s fetid cheese this morning. It’s not his fault he’s a rat and cheese is like his favorite thing. Mom threatened to turn him into a paper weight if he so much as sniffed the kitchen so I kept him out of her sight for the rest of the day.

August 19

Went to the maul today cause mom dropped some cash on me for school clothes and I wanted to see if I could find some new kicks that didn’t look like something a human would wear. No luck. I WAS digging this cookbook I found at the kitchen store until Clawdeen Wolf walked by and said something stupid. I was totally going to stone her but Clawd walked up and so I didn’t. I’m not afraid of any monster but he’s on the team and I didn’t want to start any trouble with him.

August 23

Took Cleo de Nile out tonight. I was like five minutes late and she spent the first part of the date treating me like a statue. I guess it’s all part of dating royalty which is cool but dating royalty is also stone cold expensive. I was hoping she’d want to hang out and order a screechzza but she chose prime rib instead and there went the money I was saving for those wicked new shades I wanted. I thought the food was killer but she ended up sending her meal back like a hundred times. I felt bad for the waiter and the chef especially since that’s kinda what I’d like to do one day. I didn’t say much after we left so she probably thought I was mad at her.

August 25

So I’ve been trying to talk mom into letting me get my driver’s license but she’s totally not being cooperative like...at all. Every time I bring it up she crosses her arms and her hair gets all hissy. Then I get the lecture about how when she was my age she didn’t have a car and got along just fine. One Time I made the big mistake of telling her that nobody had a car when she was my age because they hadn’t been invented yet. Dude. Not a good idea. She said, “We didn’t have skateboards either!” and I had to walk everywhere I went for the next two weeks. I think she may be coming around though, cause now she waits until after listening to my reasons for wanting my license to tell me to go clean my room. Well one thing’s for certain, I may not be getting a license or a car any time soon but I will definitely not be riding on the school hearse this year. No way no how.

September 1

I got my regular pre school year letter about making sure I wear my shades at all times when I’m on campus...whatever.

I mean first of all when I turn someone to stone they don’t stay that way; that’s my mom okay? It only lasts up to twenty-four hours and usually not even that long.

Second of all you don’t shatter like glass if you fall over and people can’t break off pieces of you so when you turn back your ear lobes are gone or something.

Thirdly you still know what’s going on around you so it’s not like you missed anything.

And lastly it’s not like I want to turn my friends into rock stars anyway although sometimes it is kinda fun to let them think that I might.

She Ra and the Princesses of Power Season Five Recap

In the finale season, Catra is forced to reevaluate her life, without the sword Adora discovers new things about She Ra, and Horde Prime makes his move. We’re in the endgame folks. Spoilers below.

I loved this season. I love it to pieces. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a season finale that was as great as this. This was a packed season, but they did a great job of having everything flow together.

The season begins with Adora throwing herself into battle. She doesn’t really know what to do without She-Ra. The rebellion is left in shatter, with Horde Prime forces running amok. I do wonder what happened with Hordak’s horde. Lonnie, Kyle, and the Lizard guy get a cameo in the last episode but the other ground troops just aren't mentioned. Not important but curious to what became of them.  

Entrapta was big this season. Maybe the writers were making up for her being absent most of last season. It starts with the other princesses pissed at the tech girl as they think she only works for the science. I mean they're not wrong. But Entraptra does care for people she just doesn’t know how to show it. She’s also bad at reading people, as she didn’t realize all the princesses were mad at her until knee deep in a mission.

Meanwhile Adora realizes that thinking about her friends she contacts the power of She Ra without the sword. This could have used just a bit more information on how it works, but I’ve seen a lot of anime, I’m used to this sort of thing. Bow, Adora, and Entraptra blast off into space to find Glimmer.

Speaking of Glimmer, she and Catra find themselves trapped on Horde Prime’s ship. I was worried that Horde Prime would be underdeveloped compared to Hordak or Catra, but he is fantastic. He is absolutely in control of every scene he’s in. I’m in awe with how charming and fighting they make him. That dinner scene was amazing. I am amazed with how quickly they set him up. He’s almost like White Diamond, genocidal lunatic with a light motif, like to hijack bodies, but with actual time to develop. Can you believe I didn’t like Keston John when I first heard him back in season one? He’s so great! He plays each Horde clone with the same voice but his acting makes them distinct from each other. It’s like listening to H. Jon Benjamin in Bob’s Burgers than Archer.

Catra realizes that her game of thronesing doesn’t work in an army made up of drones and clones with a hive mind. Realizing she has nothing left, Catra is focused to be introspective and spend time with Glimmer. Thinking she’s about to die Catra teleports Glimmer back to Adora.

When Adora realizes Ctara did something for someone else, she instantly goes into hero mode. She flies into Horde Prime’s base. They split up; Adora confronts Horde Prime, Bow and Entraptra try to hack his system for info, while Glimmer looks for Catra in the holding cells.

Entraptra sees a clone in a pod who she thinks is Hordak, so she gets him out but the clones freaks out being separated from the hive mind. Hoder Prime shows Adora a mind controlled Catra with shaved hair. He has Adora fight Catra, the chip on the back of her neck gets damaged, giving Catra just enough control to jump off the edge. Adora leaps off to get her but it’s only a few feet to the bottom so the both survive; drama queens. Seeing Catra hit sends Adora all Ultra Instinct.

Adora and everyone escapes, even Wrong Hordak (the name they give the freed clone). Catra acts like, while Catra, and tries pushes everyone away. But she realizes that Horde prime can trace her through the chip. While Entraptra works on the chip, Catra apologizes and the two have a moment. I was worried they would drag Catra’s redemption arc and the series would end on a fight between her and Adora like Saskue and Naruto. I am so glad that is not the case. I love Bow and Glimmer teasing Catra about her sneezes. Or Catra bonding with Glimmer and Bow over bonding teasing Adora. And they changed the opening, when Catra and Adora cross weapons, they’re smiling at each and Catra is in the hero group shot and it’s wonderful. Also Catra rocks that pixie cut.

With Wrong Hordak’s help, they find a planet that Horde Prime gave up trying to conquer. This sends Wrong Hordak into an extensional crisis. I love Catra realizing what idiots the best friend squad actually are. Like, she lost to these guys? They realize that Horde Prime is afraid of magic as he can’t understand or control it. Catra then meets a shapeshifting cat creature called Melog, who is a combination of a one shot shapeshifting mud monster, Catra’s own shapeshifting powers from the original series and her pet lion Clawdeen who looked exactly like Lion from Steven Universe.

Meanwhile back on Etheria, Mermista leads a James Bond heist with Sea Hawk, Perfumia, and Scorpia. They’re looking for a clairvoyant in a nightclub, but it ends up as just Double Trouble. This is properly one of the strongest episodes in the show. Horde Prime has started assimilating everyone; including Mermista, Spinnerella, and Scorpia are all chipped.

It is strange that at the eleventh hour Spinnerella and Netossa are given so much attention, but it works. They actually became characters after four seasons of them being joke characters. The show really sells the heartbreak Netossa feels at Spinnerella’s mind control. Netossa has spent the last four seasons cataloging every princesses weakness, a surprising amount is fire. Catra’s is of course a spray bottle.

This is the environment that The best friend squad find themselves in when they arrive back on Etheria. They get around with the help of Wrong Hordak, it’s hilarious. Perfurma is ecstatic that she doesn’t have to be in charge anymore.

While searching the Fright Zone, Adora and the gang run into the controlled princesses. And now that she is connected to the garnet crystal, so now she has op electric powers. Catra all like why could she do this when we were on the same side. And of course Catra also has to fight the water princess.

Horde prime realizes that he can access the heart of etheria without She Ra, and sets out to do just that. Entraptra runs into the real Hordak this time and tries to awaken him, he doesn’t capture her but he doesn’t go with her either.

Bow’s dads discover that there is a fail safe attached to the heart and destroy it. Shadow Weaver pops up and reveals that she knows where the fail safe is, Mystacor. So the rebellion goes on, and Shadow Weaver gonna Shadow Weaver and starts to be little Catra and needling Adora about getting stronger. She even flat says that Catra is holding Adora back. But when they reach the failsafe, Catra realizes that Shadow Weaver was tricking them. She's been here before and went back for them.

Shadow Weaver realized that the failsafe sucks all the magic out of the heart and sends it to the person, incinerating the user in magic. Only She ra has a chance of surviving. Adora being Adora, jumps at a chance to literally kill herself to save the world.

Catra can’t watch Adora do this so she leaves the group. You can see the heartbreak when she says that Adora will never like her the way that she likes Adora. Shadow Weaver goes to congratulate Adora on Finally getting rid of Catra, but Adora is having none of it. She tells the sorceress off and departs on her own. She even leaves Glimmer and Bow trapped in a hologram so they won’t try to save her.

While sulking, Catra sees Horde prime loudly announcing his plans to hijack Etheria. Fortunately for sour heroes, his control is visible as green light. Catra rushes to warn Adora but runs into a properly drunk Shadow Weaver. They rush off to save Adora. They bump into Glimmer and Bow and warn them of what’s happening on the surface. Glimmer and Bow go off to help the princesses, not both Glimmer and Catra have a really nice moment.

Meanwhile Adora sees Mara. Adora is so weirdly excited to sacrifice herself so everyone will be happy. But Mara sadly points that it didn’t work for her. Adora is attacked by a monster the first ones left to protect the heart. Catra and Shadow Weaver catch up and Catra gets Adora out of there. Shadow Weaver does one decent thing in her life and sacrifices herself to save the children she hurt so much. I’m not thrilled about her face heel turn but at least she died. I think there is something about the inherent narcissism of self sacrifice and how Adora shouldn’t do that but it is a small thing.

Entraptra sneaks into Horde Prime’s headquarters so she can unassimilate everyone. She is joined by Bow while Glimmer helps her remaining friends fight her father. Bow fights Scorpia when Entrapia is captured by Horde Prime himself. Hordak is with them. Entrapia encourages him to remember how he is. Hordak gets control of himself again and throws Horde prime over the edge; declaring himself his own man. But Horde prime just mind hopes right into Hordak’s body.

Back at the heart, Adora has a vision; her, Catra, Glimmer, and Bow old, safe, and having fun on the way to Scorpia’s ball. The real Catra appears; holding her hand out while the real Catra cradles Adora’s unconscious body. She confesses that she loves Adora. Adora awakes and says that she loves Catra too. And they kiss and the moment is perfect and earned and I’m so glad they got this to work. I wasn’t sure if the exces would let them do this and I’m so glad they got this moment. Your shipping getting canon is not always necceriassy but it is a fantastic feeling.

Bow and Glimmer had a moment too where Glimmer said she loved Bow and he kissed her forehead. It’s much more ambiguous than Catradora, but in an interview, Noelle realized that yes it was romantic but it was a last minute call, made literally in the recording booth.

Powered by lesbian love, Adora truns into She-Ra activates the failsafe and survives. But Horde primes figures if he can’t use the heart, he’ll kill everyone including himself, purged in the white light of fire. She Ra confronts him and banishes him from Hordak’s mind; leaving him to die without a body. Hordak remembers finding dear Adora as a baby.

Glimmer meets her dad and Catra reconciles with Scorpia. Razz nods in approval as the magic restores the planet. Adora declares that she’ll travel space spreading magic with her friends and her girlfriend.  

The ending is too abrupt. I don’t need a five year later epilogue but just spending a bit of more time with these characters to say goodbye. Catra and Scorpia and Glimmer and her dad get no time which is a big shame. Razz, a huge character last season, being reduced to a one line cameo is sad.

It was also weird that no one made a move to save Angella, when the show said she was trapped between dimensions not dead, so I thought they were sitting up a save her plot line. Maybe it was a censorship thing and trapped between dimensions meant she was dead.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I would love to see this version of She-Ra meet up with He-Man. I love crossovers and the two characters are literally siblings. Seeing this creative team tackling such ironic characters would be great. However, I don’t know if they could do this with the rights issues or if they would even want to do this. I know the popularity of this show has caused Netflix to greenlight two new He-Man shows; He-Man Revelation, a sequel to the original show helmed by Kevin Smith and a complete reboot. I’m sure both will be fine, but it won’t be the same.

This season and series is a triumph. The series started good but it wasn’t great, I remember thinking Bow and Glimmer in particular were very twee. Bow was basically diet Sokka in season one. But the characters grew and took on a life of their own. I’m glad I watched this show; I’m glad it was in my life.

July 1

Another day of doing exactly what I wanted to do...I can hardly wait for school to start...how many times would I need to write that line before I started to believe it?

July 15

It rained today which totally wrecked my plans to try out my new skate deck. I sat on the porch turning flies into pebbles until mom yelled that they were putting dents in the deck...wish this rain would hurry up and stop.

July 16

Dude - I love mom’s killer Greek food but that’s like ALL she ever cooks. I wanted to make this scary good ghoulash recipe I found but mom said it wasn’t “a proper meal for a growing boy”. Mom rocks and all but sometimes she acts like I’m still 10 years old or something.

Ghoulash

2 pounds growled beef

1 small onion; guillotined

1/2 mean smell pepper; drawn and quartered

1 jar monsternara sauce

8 ounces uncrooked elbow macaroni

1/2 cup water

1 tablespoon grrrlic salt

1/2 teaspoon black plague pepper

1 cup shredded muenster cheese

July 18

Went to the park to try and find a pickup game of casketball but there was nobody on the courts except some lame human kid. I was gonna slide out of there but he asked if I wanted to play some one on one. I figured it wouldn’t take long to make him look like a statue out there but I was wrong. He had a scary good jump shot and even crossed me over a couple times. I had just started to play really hard when my glasses got knocked off and broke. Now I have to figure out a way to get home without stoning someone but dude just too off his shades and handed them over to me. He said to keep them until I got home and he’d get them later. Told me his name is Jackson Jekyll. He said he wants a rematch. I told him any time, any place. Not a bad guy... for a human. 

August 18

Perseus ate all of mom’s fetid cheese this morning. It’s not his fault he’s a rat and cheese is like his favorite thing. Mom threatened to turn him into a paper weight if he so much as sniffed the kitchen so I kept him out of her sight for the rest of the day.

August 19

Went to the maul today cause mom dropped some cash on me for school clothes and I wanted to see if I could find some new kicks that didn’t look like something a human would wear. No luck. I WAS digging this cookbook I found at the kitchen store until Clawdeen Wolf walked by and said something stupid. I was totally going to stone her but Clawd walked up and so I didn’t. I’m not afraid of any monster but he’s on the team and I didn’t want to start any trouble with him.

August 23

Took Cleo de Nile out tonight. I was like five minutes late and she spent the first part of the date treating me like a statue. I guess it’s all part of dating royalty which is cool but dating royalty is also stone cold expensive. I was hoping she’d want to hang out and order a screechzza but she chose prime rib instead and there went the money I was saving for those wicked new shades I wanted. I thought the food was killer but she ended up sending her meal back like a hundred times. I felt bad for the waiter and the chef especially since that’s kinda what I’d like to do one day. I didn’t say much after we left so she probably thought I was mad at her.

August 25

So I’ve been trying to talk mom into letting me get my driver’s license but she’s totally not being cooperative like...at all. Every time I bring it up she crosses her arms and her hair gets all hissy. Then I get the lecture about how when she was my age she didn’t have a car and got along just fine. One Time I made the big mistake of telling her that nobody had a car when she was my age because they hadn’t been invented yet. Dude. Not a good idea. She said, “We didn’t have skateboards either!” and I had to walk everywhere I went for the next two weeks. I think she may be coming around though, cause now she waits until after listening to my reasons for wanting my license to tell me to go clean my room. Well one thing’s for certain, I may not be getting a license or a car any time soon but I will definitely not be riding on the school hearse this year. No way no how.

September 1

I got my regular pre school year letter about making sure I wear my shades at all times when I’m on campus...whatever.

I mean first of all when I turn someone to stone they don’t stay that way; that’s my mom okay? It only lasts up to twenty-four hours and usually not even that long.

Second of all you don’t shatter like glass if you fall over and people can’t break off pieces of you so when you turn back your ear lobes are gone or something. 

Thirdly you still know what’s going on around you so it’s not like you missed anything.

And lastly it’s not like I want to turn my friends into rock stars anyway although sometimes it is kinda fun to let them think that I might.

September 6

Nothing on television  ✓

No new video games I haven’t played and beated - TWICE - on the hardest level  ✓

Mom starting to find new and unusual chores to keep me busy  ✓

Cleo de Nile starting continuing to find new and unusual ways for me to spend money on her  ✓ ✓ ✓
