An academic librarian's title in the higher ed realm is professor upon hire. Assistant, associate, etc. depending on experience, and it's for good reason. They're tenure track positions right out of the gate if you can get one.
It's not the same ballgame as the '90s elementary school librarians you grew up with (even though they also did more than you know). Librarians code, build and manage databases, act as liaisons among anything from universities to federal institutions. You have medical and law librarians, archivists, and yes, public, school, and academic librarians. MLS is also a decent field jumping degree as long as you can gain experience and bring a diverse skillset.
"What the fuck do librarians do?"
Build databases from scratch. Develop in-person and online curricula that teachers, universities, and the public will also then have access to. Ensure the professor working on stress testing metals has access to exactly what he needs and isn't going to blow something up. Manage multi-million dollar budgets and grant projects. Train students to research effectively in every area of study. Some of them have smaller budgets, smaller populations, and less daunting "duties as assigned," but they still do their own version of these things.
Nearly every document you've ever used in your studies exists and is accessible to you because of a librarian.
That said, most librarians have to have at least a master's (the MLS or MLIS), which I don't necessarily agree with. There's reason for it if your plan is to go into higher education, but most librarians should be able to qualify for most library roles with a bachelor's. @seeyouinmemehell is exactly right in that there's typically not an undergraduate program to train librarians. Most make the jump from English, an education program, etc.

Books of 2025: OVERGROWTH by Mira Grant.
Plant-astically delighted to report that I received an ARC via Tor (Nightfire) and Goodreads! I love Seanan McGuire's writing, and my first foray into her work as Mira Grant was INTO THE DROWNING DEEP, which was phenomenal (think all the best parts of Michael Crichton--the Science, the Speculation, the Consequences--but women and queer people are Entire Characters)(we love a good sci-fi horror paced like a thriller in this house).
The premise of OVERGROWTH is basically "the pod people are coming, they've been warning you about it for decades, and no one has been listening." Stasia, our main character and (first person, past tense) narrator, has spent her whole life telling people that she's "the vanguard of an invading species of intelligent alien plants," which is confirmed via a broadcast from space.
And the chapters are time-stamped "X days pre-invasion."
Yeah.
This book was an absolute delight and all around a lot of fun--the tone was the perfect balance of funny and heartfelt and relatable and dread-inducing, and it very much read like a love letter to the genre with lots of cross-pollinated references (Seymour? Little Shop of Horrors? War of the Worlds? Jurassic Park? Hello????).
It was also very much a book about the distinction between being human and being a person, and about alienation and belief and trust and friendship, and about queerness and neurodivergence and belonging. And, y'know, mimetic plant aliens, in myriad shades of green.
I was initially surprised by the choice to tell this story in past tense and first person (because DROWNING DEEP was patently not that, and most of what I've read of McGuire hasn't been either), but it turns out that was The Only Correct Way To Do It: For most of the book, Stasia didn't have the full picture of what was going on, but her partial understanding + our readerly perspective from inside her head carried both the relatability and the horror. It was a really interesting and cool way to do an alien invasion book (from the perspective of the invader's plant)(ahaha, botanical pun). Also, the narrative frame made me pterodactyl Hunter shriek my way through the last two pages, which. OOF. WHAT A RIDE!!! I'll be rotisserie-ing over the late-game twist (page 396/465 in my copy) and the ending for a long time.
I loved that the aliens felt alien and all too much like people; I loved Toni and Hunter; I loved the biology and worldbuilding; I loved the botanical quips ("salad bar" is, in fact, the best possible term of address to an alien invader, no notes); I loved the shady government agencies and unethical experimentation; I loved the "we are the monsters you have made". I stayed up way past my bedtime several times for this, and it was worth every second. Do recommend, check this out in May!!
Half-assed spoilery content warnings under the cut (I'm not good at these because I have a weird concept of what necessitates a warning, so please do NOT consider these complete in any way shape or form):
on-page toddler death (graphic, in prologue, signposted with "look away"); transphobia (toward beloved trans character); spider (alien); bug-adjacent (alien); vampirism/blood drinking; other usual horror/alien invasion type tropes etc. (body horror? do people tag body horror?? i was an animorphs kid i'm sorry i don't know what a normal amount of body horror is but i love it all)

MiqoMarch Day 11 - Loss
#dawntrail spoilers#ffxiv#miqomarch#miqomarch2025#g'raha tia#arsay nun#wolgraha#dawntrail#ffxiv spoilers#oof this was a doozy to write and pose but i got through it 😭#i was going to expand on the bird metaphor initially but then I remembered that Arsay doesnt really do that. she just says shit#so you the viewer gets to decide what she means#I feel like its been a while since I've shown Arsay lifting her partner up in a conversation#shes been real baby since endwalker so its usually her who needed the support#im glad DT gave me a moment for Arsay to show her inspiring side now that shes gone through endwalker character development#were it any other character she would have said nothing tbh These are feelings she could only reveal to raha and shtola#so many people have done amazing takes on this scene and their wols replies i really hope this doesnt come off as reductive#or accidentally copying someone else#this part really hit me when I was playing because of irl reasons but even still i knew in the moment arsay would fight grahas doubt#because she believes so much in him and his kind soul. And shes seen it in action too. she sees a distinction between his actions-#- and that of others who claimed to do things for the good of their people#tbh arsay does kinda fall into the camp of 'would rather die than have to mourn another loved one' at this point#but if it came down to it I dont think shed be able to do anything but keep living- shes stronger than she believes herself to be

Okay, crack theory: Kaito was the one who did the stigma test.
Delusional explanation:
So I know the voice sounds exactly like Haku, BUT I find it very strange that MC didn't recognize it considering she recognized Taiga later on. But if it was Kaito speaking in a much lower and softer voice than usual, then of course she wouldn't recognize it. She also didn't recognize the hand holding hers, which is much more if a stretch, but I don't think Kaito ever held her hand like Haku did.
Also, it was mentioned that Kaito's stigma was something like "seeing auras" (I don't remember where that was mentioned), so what if that's what they use to assess the ghouls' powers?

hey! this blog seems like it’s been kind of abandoned since mid-may, but the concept seems really cool to me and i’m wondering if you’ll continue it steadily? its alright if not, or if you’re just taking a break. hope everything is well!!
hey there! thanks for the ask. i haven’t abandoned this comic—if you’re in the clangen comic community discord server you’ll see me around and i’ve been working, slowly and sporadically, on the next page. i’ve been dealing with some of the fallout from a family emergency that happened back in november on and off which has been taking an unfortunate toll on my mental health. i’m doing my best to get back to it! i just have been prioritizing my mental health and trying to avoid getting overwhelmed/burned out from unrelated circumstances.
if i ever decide to abandon this blog, i’ll make an announcement so folks aren’t left wondering. i’d hate to disappear without a word and never come back (which—i recognize is sort of what i’ve done. but i plan to come back! so clearly not the same /j), so if i ever do decide to leave it for good there won’t be any uncertainty about it.
here’s a wip of the next page as an olive branch. i apologize for not saying anything proactively!

I can't remember the last time a chapter has made me feel the way this one did.... i'm just speechless, oh my god. this is what it looks like when Asagiri does his best work. i missed this bsd so, so, so much 😭😭😭

happy friday! here is a little bbts chapter 5 proof of life
When Tim comes down again his mouth is full of blood—bitten cheek—and his whole head throbs, an almost fizzy numbness flooding through his jaw in the sudden absence of pain. He struggles through another wheezing breath, wincing at the familiar sensation of torn muscles around his rib cage. “Ah,” Checkered Shirt is saying. “There does seem to be a localized paralytic effect. That last placement may have been counterintuitive; my mistake. But as we discussed, that’s the beauty of mistakes in a setting like this. The opportunity to learn from them.” Tim tips his head. Clumsily spits a mouthful of blood on the metal floor—evidence, he thinks hazily, if he moves me—and finds his tongue. “Funny how you still haven’t gotten what you want,” he half-slurs, “considering how many opportunities you keep having.”

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Julian Bashir/Elim Garak Characters: Julian Bashir, Elim Garak Additional Tags: Post-Canon Cardassia (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), First Time, Fluff, and some philosophy they're on brand in this one, Julian u-haul lesbianing it up in here and he's RIGHT about it actually, Cuddling & Snuggling Summary:
Julian takes Garak’s hand and places it on his own chest — slightly to the left of center; a symbolically loaded position if ever there was one, from everything Garak has been able to gather of Human anatomy and metaphor both.
His skin really is so incredibly warm — immediately, undeniably alien in a way Garak has always found oddly pleasing even in brief mundane brushes, a sensation pattern that taken together with the steady gentleness of his hands means Julian and nothing else in Garak’s head. And Garak’s hand, briefly forgiven for and freed from all the disgusting things and all the useful things it has done in its time, only looks quiet and grey and almost innocent, resting over Julian’s heart.

A wild Garashir first time fic appears! It is incredibly sappy

This piece is a "Pick one" commission from the_rin on AO3! Thank you so much again for commissioning me and for your endless patience while I struggled with this creature that decided to run away from me 🤍🙏
One day, I might be able to actually write this story in Luffy's POV (which is what it was originally supposed to be both four years ago when I first had the idea and now.. but I still don't have enough skill and confidence to successfully make it ☠️
So for now, please enjoy Nami's slowly losing it while chaos rules over Sabaody 🍊
----------
3D2Y
As Nami climbed up onto the Sunny’s deck for the first time in two years, with a wide smile on her lips and arms full of shopping bags, she could barely contain her excitement. After all, it now finally felt like time was moving again after the crew’s separation.
When she had gotten the news of the war while on Weatheria, it was like a punch in the gut. She had seen the photos of the state both Luffy and Ace were in before their escape—both with terrible burn scars on their chests with blood all over their faces, looking on the brink of death. The following days were nothing short of a high-speed nightmare filled with nothing but worry, fear, and the need to be by Luffy’s side with no way to get to him.
She trusted that Luffy would make it… but there was no real guarantee he would. Or that Ace would.
Nami didn’t dare imagine how Luffy would feel if he had lost his brother. While completely alone, with no one from the crew by his side… Her heart nearly broke at the mere thought of it.
So, when the news of Luffy’s escapade at Marineford reached her a few weeks later, seeing the message he had for his crew, it was like a huge weight had been lifted off her chest. She knew what Luffy was trying to say. She understood. And she knew that she, too, could get stronger.
With Weatheria’s science, she was sure she could become a navigator capable of getting Luffy wherever he damn well wanted.
And she was confident that now, two years later, she was more than able to do that.
Even though she imagined that Luffy was going to come up with the stupidest, most dangerous places to sail to…
But, that was a battle she would fight when they got there; for now, she was just beyond excited to see everyone!
By the time she had arrived on Sabaody a few days ago, only Franky and Zoro were already there—one of which was definitely hopelessly lost and possibly half-way to Fishman Island by that point—but now… Now it all felt so much more real.
Usopp and Chopper were with her—or had been before they ran off to rave over Franky—, Shakky said that Brook and Sanji were somewhere on the archipelago, and now, even Robin was on the ship already, waiting for Nami to climb up the ladder.
They were only missing Luffy now, but that was just a matter of time.
Honestly, their biggest problem at this point was finding Zoro and dragging his directionally challenged ass back here.
“Nami! I’m so happy to see you!” Robin said, pulling Nami into a hug as soon as she found her balance on the jelly-like coating under her feet.
Nami laughed easily, returning the gesture. “Same to you! You look amazing!” she complimented the archeologist, sighing in content at the familiar warmth of her friend’s presence.
That is, at least, until a high-pitched scream resounded around the deck, startling Nami and making her jump.
“Hair comes out?!”
“Awesome!!”
“Can you make any hairstyle you want?!”
Heaving a deep sigh, Nami shook her head. “I can’t believe Franky’s body got even more ridiculous. What even is going on over there?”
“Who knows?” Robin chuckled “Looks like the boys like it though.”
“Such a bulky body seems so inconvenient. I don’t get it,” another woman piped up.
“Right?” Nami agreed with a huff. “I mean, what’s with those shoulders—”
Suddenly, Nami stopped talking. Blinking a few times, she tried to figure out what it was that suddenly felt so off… but then, she whipped around in the direction of the last voice—a distinctly unfamiliar voice.
