Anyone familiar with installing Linux on old Thinkpads?

What I want to do under cut

Right now it has a really noisy HDD in it with its original windows 95 install. I want to replace the drive with a Linux install and add wifi connectivity as a way to use this out of the house to work on online school things. Adding USB to it as well would be nice. I would also still want the Floppy drive and Disc drive to be usable. I know the PCMCIA slot doesn't support cardbus and is only 16-bit. Don't know how possible it would be, I've just had this thing for a few years and got all the use out of it I wanted with the windows 95 install. I just would like to give it more of a purpose than a cool little laptop.

Thrift Store Laptop

Welcome back fuckers to my tumble dryer. Today's garbage fire wonders how long I can keep this mostly-upbeat, mostly-grammatically-correct tone going.

A few days ago, I went to my local thrift store looking for one of those big 5-disc CD changer things that no one wants. I walked out of that store with one laptop and no CD changer.

I bought this IBM ThinkPad R51 for $24.99.

There was also a Panasonic Toughbook, but I don't want to spend $69.99 right now.

After getting it home, suffering to get it open, and viewing the very intact thermal paste,

After suffering to put it back together, likely breaking some things and having a screw left over, it workie!

Complete with personal files, sensitive information, and a probable virus! Yippee!

But yeah. It a ThinkPad. Intel Celeron M 350, 512MB DDR1-333, 40GB HDD, Win XP Pro, good screen, 2005.

Was this worth it? Eh. Do I have one more ThinkPad than I did before (zero)? Yes. Do I have a 5-disc CD changer? Still no.

Did a nice little project with my X40 today. Wanted to throw OpenBSD on it to make it a triple-boot between Windows XP, Haiku, and OpenBSD. I’m really happy with how it turned out, was loosely styling it after AIXWindows :3

My ThinkPad. Gum stickers. A monument to old TV shows. I recently inserted an Intel Core i7 2670QM into it, 16GB RAM, Samsung SSD. I put a second SSD in place of the disk tray. A fantasy screensaver for the BIOS. If a thief steals my laptop, he will definitely become anxious.
