Today was a good day.

It didn’t start off that way. Or really continue that way, if I’m honest. Several things continued to or went wrong through the morning. Skye got my keys stuck & couldn’t get in to let Serena out. Jim was being a pain in the butt. Callie suddenly needed information she’d asked Keith for two weeks ago (surprise, surprise 🙄).

But I have awesome neighbours, Jo gave Skye my keys, Helen was home to answer Skye’s knock & it all worked out. Skye is so nice & apologetic & would have driven to Stevenage to get my keys if she needed, whereas Kate always makes me out to be the bad guy. It’s so refreshing.

I had a chat with Sarah, only a brief one but enough to remind me why it’s so good to talk to her. Monika’s lovely & I like her a lot, but Sarah & I are so similar, we know what the other’s going to say three quarters of the time before we even say it. I need that sometimes. She knows me so well, she’d clocked something wasn’t right with me before I was even fully aware of it, & being seen that way always helps. Like I’m not some alien that doesn’t make sense to humanity at large.

Then very slowly, all the problems got sorted out. Sarah sorted Callie. I sorted Jim. Skye sent me stuff about Serena, who was doing amazing & Skye really adores her, which always fills me with warmth & relief.

Monika & I got out for a walk & the weather was so much better than I was expecting. Then together (together! What a novel experience that still is, to have someone else to share all this extra work stuff with!) we put a list together that Keith needs. I bounced a few things off her that had come directly to me.

Then I was able to help out at the IDBS meeting & had another moment of someone just knowing me - Robyn really is lovely, I wish I had more to do with her - which made me glow.

I came home to a very excited Serena that I had been worrying about all afternoon because she was so active, but she wasn’t frustrated or mischievous, she was just happy & excited. We met Mischa & his owner on the way out, always lovely to chat (even if I still can’t get used to the compliments & feel guilty about accepting them in case there’s a behind-the-scenes reason he’s paying them because - no. He’s lovely but no). Serena absolutely adores that big gentle giant, it’s so sweet.

Then we met quite a few others dogs on the way round that Serena got to say hi to or play with & that makes her so happy, which in turn makes me really happy & everyone is usually so lovely & friendly to her & me. Serena had a race with a greyhound & finally got outstripped by a mile!

The sun wasn’t completely out but it was so warm - still is! Even with the sun setting. It’s the first time I’ve gotten this year to sit out in my garden while Serena’s playing her sniffer game for her food. I’ve learned so much from other dog people, so much more than I did at first from looking online, it’s made things so much easier.

I managed to complete all the goals in the PQ app for the first time today, have contributed to the group chat & been honest. I can’t remember right now when the last time I felt this at peace was.

I’m still waiting to hear about my blood tests until next week, but at least I know there’s a potential answer coming now, it’s not just that I’m rubbish at getting sleep of any substantial quality.

I’m not saying that suddenly everything is fixed. It isn’t. Serena’s vet bills have made things very awkward, bank wise. I’m meant to be travelling to Newark tomorrow & that’s more petrol to pay for but I can’t cancel because I really want to see the people up there & I owe them that effort.

But generally speaking? Today was good. I’m happy.

Santander and IDB Invest Team Up To Revolutionize Brazilian Cancer Treatment

It will also offer the ultimate in tests and treatments with image-guided intervention systems, magnetic resonance imaging, computerized tomography, CT PETs (one of the most accurate tests for cancer detection) and linear accelerators. Back in Brazil, Lula faces tough choices in forging new government

President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva returned to Brazil on Sunday, after basking in the glory of an international tour, to confront the tough task of defining his government amid jitters in financial markets and divisions in his coalition.

While Lula was cheered by allies in Portugal and at the United Nations climate summit, the challenging tradeoffs facing him back home were threatening to spoil his post-election party.

I adopted Ares seven years ago. He's a former stray cat rescued at the age of 2 y.o. (approximately) in 2014. When I found him, he was in a very bad condition, full of scratches, back covered in scabies. Back then I was a broke undergrad student, but I didn't hesitate to rescue him. We went through some major issues to improve his health, but we made it in the end. He’s diabetic, but the disease is controlled. He's being my best friend since then.

After a few years and many other cats joining our family, Ares started to have some gastrointestinal issues around September/October 2021. I had a new litter of cats to take care of and we also had to change the brand of our cat's dry food at the same time. Major changes for an elderly cat. His poop started to change its consistency, which I attributed to the stress of having new feline siblings + new food. I took him to the vet in late October and after a blood test, the diagnosis was stress. They prescribed rest and probiotics. It worked, but not for long.

Ares had to pay other visits to the vet in November. More blood tests, stool tests. More probiotics, antibiotics, and vermifuges. Until then, all the results pointed to food allergy. In late December, he had an outbreak of severe diarrhea, and then a veterinarian asked for a FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) test. Ares was tested in 2016 for a bus trip, and the results came out negative for both diseases, but this time he tested positive for FIV, which is the feline equivalent to HIV. Since adoption, Ares (and his siblings) have been indoor cats. We don't know what happened, the vet's hypothesis is that the 2016 result was a false negative one.

Having 9 years of age and FIV makes him a very fragile cat. A few days ago, he was submitted to an ultrasound procedure and the results came out inconclusive: he either has a 1) feline low-grade alimentary lymphoma (LGAL) or 2) feline inflammatory bowel disease (IDB). Both diseases are radically different, which means the respective treatments are very specific. We need to know what he has ASAP to give him the better vet care available, and as the vet suspects of a lymphoma, time is against us.

So, the last resource to discover what exactly he has is by submitting him to a biopsy. We need a sample of his intestine cells to tell if he has cancer or if his intestines are undergoing an allergic reaction. The whole procedure costs around 1.405,00 (one thousand four hundred and five) brazilian reais (approximately 246 US dollars or 218 euros) and represents my income of nearly one month and a half (brazilian currency doesn't value this much, as you can see). It also represents almost the sum of the past 3 months of veterinary care, including medication, vet appointments, special cat food. I have already compromised my income until March, and my working contract ends in April. I'm looking for new jobs, but the Brazilian economy is currently not very promising, and even the freelance stuff I find is not enough to get all this money in this short period of time.

This price includes: Preoperative vet appointment, laparotomy, anesthesia by inhalation, biopsy (the analysis of the intestinal tissue sample), blood tests. He might need two days of hospitalization, but this price doesn’t include it. The vet clinic is the safest one I've found in my area, which is important considering his age, the fact he's slightly anemic and immunosuppressed due to feline aids. I already have 50% of this sum due to donations.

I'm normally too proud to ask for help to take care of any of my cats, because they're my responsibility alone, but this time the sum of money I need to spend is just too much all at once. It would've been already too much in normal circumstances, but on the verge of unemployment, it's just too much for me to handle all alone. Regardless of his diagnosis, I'll find a way to guarantee he'll have the appropriate treatment, but for the biopsy I don't have the time in my favor. I don't have the time to think about ways to get this money and go job hunting, it's just too much money for just one exam and a procedure that has to be done ASAP.

Blockchain technology could be set for a major security boost

Advances in quantum computing have the potential to change the world as we know it especially since today's security and encryption solutions won't be able to withstand attacks launched by quantum computers.

For this reason, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Cambridge Quantum (CQ) and the Monterrey Institute of Technology have identified as well as resolved several potential threats to blockchain networks posed by quantum computers.

In order to combat these threats, the project team has developed a cryptographic layer that enables blockchain networks to protect themselves from attacks carried out using quantum computers.

The rise of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has led to blockchain becoming increasingly popular and now that businesses are exploring using the technology's decentralized ledgers in finance, real estate and other industries, preparing for the quantum era has become even more important.

The post-quantum cryptographic layer developed by IDB, CQ and the Monterrey Institute of Technology protects networks and offers resistance to quantum computer attacks was developed on the LACChain Besu blockchain network which is based on Ethereum technology.

During testing, transactions and communications were protected with quantum-proof keys from CQ's IronBridge platform that uses quantum computers to generate certified entropy.

CEO of IDB Lab Irene Arias Hofman provided further details on the project team's breakthrough in a press release, saying:

“In the digital age in which we find ourselves we have at our disposal different emerging technologies with the capacity to solve social problems, and to the extent that we are able to combine them we will achieve an exponential impact. In this case, the knowledge of the IDB team, together with CQ and TEC, in both quantum and blockchain technologies, has made it possible to achieve a fundamental milestone to guarantee the future integrity of LACChain, a blockchain platform created by the IDB Lab which more than 50 entities in the region are using already.”

Neuropathic Hydrocephalus in cattle

• Other names: NH, bovine hydrocephalus, water head [not to be confused with "internal hydrocephalus," a different genetic condition]

• Cause: A recessive genetic mutation on a single chromosome

• Species: cattle (Angus, Angus-crosses, and Angus-influenced breeds)

• Transmission: Genetic. When two carrier animals are bred, there is a 25% chance the offspring will inherit two copies of the affected recessive gene and develop the condition. There is a 50% chance the calf will be an asymptomatic carrier, and a 25% chance it will be free of the NH gene.

• Signs:

- Stillborn calf with an extremely large cranium ("volleyball to basketball sized"), with little or no neurological tissue. The size of the head may result in dystocia.

- The bones of the cranium are only loosely connected and fall apart during necropsy.

- Most affected calves weigh only ~25-35 lbs (~11-16 kg) at birth

- Some deaths occur earlier in the pregnancy, so the condition may be misdiagnosed or even unnoticed.

• Treatment: None, this is a lethal condition.

• Prevention: Genetic testing of breeding stock and only using semen from NH-free sires for AI, culling NH carriers or breeding only to NH-free cattle and testing all offspring kept as replacement stock prior to breeding.

- "A common ancestor, GAR Precision 1680, has been identified on either side of pedigrees of all affected calves." Since his sire and dam tested negative, it's likely the mutation began with him. He was one of the most widely use AI sires in the Angus industry, with approximately 10,000 direct offspring, many of whom are now popular AI sires themselves. [Another lethal genetic defect, Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM, or "curly calf") has also been traced to this sire's line. I found information stating that the original breeder of GAR Precision 1680 tests all their current sires for AM and doesn't breed or sell semen from AM carriers, but I couldn't find a similar statement re: NH specifically, though they do guarantee their genetics.]

Both Education Minister Kay McConney and Chief Education Officer Dr Ramona Archer- Bradshaw should be suspended while a public enquiry is conducted into how the controversial Computer Science test was administered in local schools. That is the view of human rights advocate Felicia Dujon, who is also imploring parents of students affected by the test to bring a class action lawsuit against the Government. Dujon, a lecturer in Philosophy at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, has contended that even though apologies were tendered by McConney, Dr Archer-Bradshaw and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), for their mistakes which led to 733 11-year-olds being questioned about their sexuality and gender identity, there was a need for an investigation. She told Barbados TODAY it meant that both the minister and the Chief Education Officer should be “placed on leave” until those investigations were completed. “Parents should request a public enquiry into the matter because what has happened is that we are hearing different persons saying different things. They are having several press conferences with truths and half-truths and sometimes we don’t know. “Allegations are being thrown everywhere and we need a public enquiry as to what we have heard and in the interim we need the Minister of Education as well as the CEO to be placed on leave until that investigation is done,” Dujon said. She maintained that the situation was so serious that parents should join together and take legal action against Government. Dujon said the State had “overstepped its boundaries” and the only resolution was for the matter to be ventilated in the court of law. “I think that parents at this stage should seek legal counsel to ensure that their rights are upheld and also to ensure that the Government recognizes the legal and moral rights of parents.
