So Currently I am in Kota for IIT-JEE prep and coming here was eye opening to me. Never had I ever imagined a place so depressing that too a place full of youngsters. Most of the people I’ve met here who are serious about their studies and career are suffering from depression. I really think that the Indian education system really needs to shift the way it puts so much pressure on young minds that kind of restricts them to just the covered syllabus for their grade instead of giving them opportunities to go think out of the box and do stuff that they are actually passionate about. I am 16 and I have no passion can you imagine this!? I was asked by my college counsellor to write 5 things I am passionate about I had nothing to write. That’s when I realised that I was so stuck up with grades and academics that I never actually figured myself out. It’s really sad that thousands of students commit suicide. Can you imagine this and I won’t even blame them to be honest, the amount of pressure that is put especially during 11th and 12th grade is unimaginable. Every one gets into a rat race of getting into the best colleges of their fields (which most of the time is either decided by their parents or based on what their friends are choosing). Since I have come here I could not stop wondering what is my passion and i don’t know about passion but it really just makes me think and wonder if I can do something to change this.

IIT Bombay Placement Challenges: A Reflection of the Current Job Market

IIT Bombay, a renowned educational institution in India, is currently facing challenges in job placements for its graduates. As the 2024 placement season unfolds, 36 graduates remain without job offers, raising concerns about employment prospects. This situation highlights the growing unemployment crisis that has affected various sectors, including the tech industry.

Major IT companies have implemented mass layoffs and hiring freezes, leading to a challenging job market. Despite this, top institutes like IITs and IIMs in India maintain a record of 100% placement for graduating students. However, IIT Bombay, ranked among the top five institutions, is facing placement challenges. Out of approximately 2000 registered students, around 36% (712 students) lack job offers. The Computer Science and Engineering branch may not achieve 100% placement for the first time.

High salary packages often make headlines, with some students receiving job offers worth crores of rupees. However, IIT Bombay faced difficulties attracting companies for campus placements due to high salary demands. Companies were hesitant to offer such high salaries, leading to fewer job opportunities. The placement season continues until May 2024, so the number may change.

In response to these challenges, some students are considering alternative options like startups or off-campus placements due to low-paying job offers. This trend reflects the changing job market dynamics, where companies are willing to invest in employees when they see growth and profitability but hesitant when they are not profitable. The emergence of artificial intelligence and other new technologies further complicates the job market.

The unemployment rate is particularly high among youth aged 15 to 29, with 83% of unemployed individuals in India falling into this age group. Graduates face difficulties securing jobs with decent salaries, while individuals with limited education can find employment more easily. This has led to a decline in the labor force participation rate, from 54% in 2000 to 42% in 2022.

IIT Bombay is not the only institution facing placement challenges. BITS Pilani and IM Lucknow have also sought assistance from alumni in securing jobs for graduating students due to the economic downturn and layoffs in the technology sector.

Stakeholders, including the government, need to come together and create policies to address these challenges. By working together, we can create a more stable and supportive job market for graduates and help address the growing unemployment crisis.

IIT Bombay student's death: No caste-based discrimination, says inquiry panel

Darshan Solanki's family had claimed he was facing discrimination since he belonged to a Scheduled Caste.

MUMBAI: The inquiry committee set up by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay after the death of its student Darshan Solanki last month allegedly by suicide has ruled out caste-based discrimination and hinted at deteriorating academic performance as a possible cause.

Originally from Ahmedabad in Gujarat, 18-year-old Solanki, a first-year student of B.Tech (Chemical) course, died on February 12 after allegedly jumping off the seventh floor of his hostel on the campus in Powai.

His family had claimed he was facing discrimination since he belonged to a Scheduled Caste.

Authorities at the prestigious IITB had set up a 12-member inquiry committee under Professor Nand Kishore, head of the chemistry department, in connection with the death and allegations surrounding the incident.

Late last month, the police had said the Maharashtra government had formed a special investigation team to conduct a probe into Solanki's death.

The incident hit national headlines, with students group in several cities of the country holding protests denouncing caste-based discrimination in educational institutions.
