Linux isn't a good alternative if you're tech illiterate. I don't quite get why people push it as if it'll solve anything! Sure it's a great alternative if you know how to use the internet to troubleshoot and have an understanding of what you're doing. But people who are tech illiterate probably don't fall into either of those categories.

Evey fucking Linux user is going to "well actually," these types of comments too! Congrats on being tech literate. Now go study human computer interaction before you suggest fucking Linux of all things as an alternative for tech illiterate people.

We need to lay more blame for "Kids don't know how computers work" at the feet of the people responsible: Google.

Google set out about a decade ago to push their (relatively unpopular) chromebooks by supplying them below-cost to schools for students, explicitly marketing them as being easy to restrict to certain activities, and in the offing, kids have now grown up in walled gardens, on glorified tablets that are designed to monetize and restrict every movement to maximize profit for one of the biggest companies in the world.

Tech literacy didn't mysteriously vanish, it was fucking murdered for profit.

was thinking about how in my mafia au fic Liam plays brawl stars (coz why not?) in Theo's office while Theo's doing his paper work (he keeps Liam around as his bellboy and Liam doesn't like the fact that he has to be around that grumpy asshole like everyday; Josh is jealous coz Theo's never allowed him in his office)

but then one day Liam's phone dies and he almost dies with it from boredom he sneaks Theo's phone ("let's see what you've got here, Raeken") and the only game there is chess (it was pre-installled). So he starts playing it and gets hooked! And after that he downloads it on his phone and actually starts learning techniques.

sometimes they even play chess together (and Theo likes it, especially to see the smile on Liam's face when he's winning; doesn't happen often so too not boost his ego)

i have done it

i installed arch AND connected to ze interwebs. it's actually possible.

pro trick:

boot into an arch installler

do the iwctl bullshit (this has problems on a normal install)

note, in this gap here when installing arch, you do things that arent here. do that.

mount /dev/root_drive /mnt

arch-chroot /mnt

now under the new root,

pacman -S networkmanager

reboot into/finish your install (or do the pacman thing as pacstrap when you install nano and base and all that during installation)

systemctl enable NetworkManager.service

then systemctl start NetworkManager.service

works wonders

FINAL UPDATE

I got gshade to work i think i had to change up the settings when installling it so i clicked directx9/10/11 when i guess i needed to just click directx9 by itself in my defense i was following a video tutorial on youtube to get it to work so i guess this worked better for my laptop choosing direct x9 only

OpenMW has an automated modlist installler and guide! With several lists to choose from.

And really (with a userscript to automate part of the clicking) you can get a 460 entry modlist (with edits, cleaning, patches, navmesh, all of it) done in an hour or two (minimum time capped by nexusmods slow DL speed and which modlist you choose) - I would know, I did just that!

It's more accurate to say that it's a custom modlist installer specifically for modding.openmw's lists, which comes with a drawback.

Pros: Gets It Done! Does all the hard work of a difficult but well maintained modlist automagically, including configuration. You just gotta punch in 4 lines of powershell, which the guide provides!

Cons: Because all the work is done for you, changing anything that isn't in the in-game mod settings menu (and not all mods have them since the vast majority of mods were made without OpenMW in mind) is a pain, and risks buggering shit up if it's even a modestly sized change, since so much of the load order is custom patched to work with itself.

It IS possible, they do provide a somewhat helpful guide, but it's not simple, or easy, or well supported, which is frustrating.

Right now I just want to get rid of this awful and tiny skyrim crosshair, it's too fucking small.
