The rig, eco terror divagante

The Defense Reviews: The Windmere Children
*This Here Review Contains Mad Spoilers*
Tumblr media
My taste in movies and tv shows is just getting stranger everyday.
A film inspired by true events, in which a group of Jewish 400 youths that survived the holocaust are sent to live in England and the records of what happened in their rehabilitation and assimilation into English society.
Directed by Michael Samuels, and set in 1945, the film’s opening scene depicts one of the teenage male survivors on the train who complains that the name written on his identity documents is not his real name, and one of the others tells him that “perhaps he should embrace his new name, because his birth name has been no good for him up until now”.
This conversation sets the tone for the film’s themes of identity, loss, rehabilitation, trauma and belonging.
Tumblr media
When the children are first brought to the Windmere homes they cannot even sit through a prayer before snatching pieces of bread and running to stashing it away, and that’s before dinner is actually served.
The children have lived with their first instinct being to survive. They are not well socialized and are insanely distrustful of outsiders, to the point of being shocked that nobody pointed a gun at them upon arrival at the institution.
One of the boys is shocked to the point of throwing up when merely being greeted “hello” by the expectant handshake of Leonard Montefiore.
When one of the boys runs off into the surrounding woods, he is shocked that nobody bothers to chase him, and he is given as much time to himself in the wilderness before eventually returning to the facility on his own.
While the facility is an institution, it has to avoid running like a prison or concentration camp. The administrators of the institution have to avoid things that resemble how their captors once treated them.
When a child runs away, he is not chased. When a child comes forth and admits to stealing a pet belonging to a local woman, he is not punished. When a group of boys are caught stealing eggs, they are admonished conversationally rather than handled physically or forced into isolation.
Tumblr media
The questioning of these “modern” rehabilitative measures that place less emphasis on punitive punishment and brings on questions about how to go about best adjusting or assimilating to regular society.
Another of the film’s themes is of responsibility, and primarily whose responsibility is it to rehabilitate these children? The threat of funding being cut hangs over the program.
The children are not English, nor are they the victims of anything perpetrated by the English military or government, so their presence in an English town is not met with welcome.
And yet, in a matter of just 4 months. the head of the institution Oscar Friedmann, played in the film by Thomas Kretschmann, remarks how quickly the program has changed the children for the better.
All told a very solid film about a piece of history and a study into the personalities and behaviors of institutionalized people.

Timothy Dalton's last James Bond film Licence to Kill was released on July 14, 1989. It wasn't meant to be his last film, but due to legal issues, another Bond film wasn't able to go into production until 1995 and by that time Dalton was ready to move on. For the most part, the movie took on a more series tone for the character and story keeping more to the Bond of the books as was the case of Dalton's previous film The Living Daylights. It was the first Bond film not to be titled after one of the Ian Fleming Bond books, but the story pulled from many elements from Live and Let Die and The Hildebrand Rarity. David Hedison became the first actor to play the role Felix Lieter (Live and Let Die - 1973/Licence to Kill - 1995) more than once and the only actor play the role against two different Bonds (Roger Moore and Dalton). Besides being Dalton's last film as Bond, it was also the last Bond film with Robert Brown as M and Caroline Bliss as Moneypenny, and the last Bond film worked on by writer Richard Maibaum, director John Glen, and title designer Maurice Binder. The film also featured Robert Davi (Franz Sanchez), Carey Lowell (Pam Bovier), Talisa Soto (Lupe Lamore), Anthony Zerbe (Milton Krest), Frank McRae (Sharkey), Everett McGill (Killifer), Wayne Newton (Professor Joe Butcher), Benicio Del Toro (Dario), Anthony Starke (Truman-Lodge), Desmond Llewelyn (Q), Priscilla Barnes (Della Churchill), Don Stroud (Heller), Grand L Bush (Hawkins), and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Kwang). While not the most finacially successful Bond film at the time, like On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the movie has grown in fan appreciation over time. ("Licence to Kill", Bond Film, Event)

You go, Glenn Coco!
As you can see, the drama kids in my game were busy putting on their very own rendition of 'Mean Girls' and I shall admit that editing these was a whole lot of fun 👉🏻👈🏻
