Iâve had covid for the last week and Iâve gotta go back to work tomorrow. At the start I joked that I would get so much drawing done, and all Iâve done is this Jasper doing an incorrectly drawn navy salute

If you ever see a healthcare worker in my workplace being stupid about sterile procedures or masking, I, a physician, want you to report them.
Because odds are, I, a physician, have already tried to kindly or bluntly educate them about it, but they'll just keep on doing it when it's "just the patient" in the room (and whining about those obnoxious coworkers who keep on insisting on things like "wearing a mask around patients with covid-like symptoms" and "washing your hands all the time")... until administration gets enough complaints and fires their stupid ass.
You are not "causing trouble for the whole urgent care because of 1 lousy worker"...
You are helping to prune out the stupid.
The anti-mask brain rot is penetrating the hospital system in a terrifying fashion.
Masks are necessary for accessing central lines, and more and more nurses are starting to have issues with wearing a mask during STERILE PROTOCOL.
These lines are going right into our hearts and nurses are throwing tantrums about having to cover up their faces for 5 minutes.
This has not happened at my infusion center personally but I have mutuals and friends who have had to beg their nurses to put on the mask that literally comes in the sterile access kit.

Just so non Americans understand btw: Iâm Canadian but I go to grad school in the US, so I have great US health insurance through my program. earlier this summer I got a really bad sore throat. Iâm scared of he US health system, so I put off going to see any doctor but I have a history of strep throat so when my eyes got infected too I went to the doctor even though the appointment alone was $50, which to me (as a Canadian) is shockingly expensive. In the appointment, they swabbed my throat twice to check what was in there. I paid my $50 appointment fee and got antibiotics for my eyes for about $25.
A few weeks later I got hit for a bill over $700 for the âproceduresâ administered during that appointment (ie sticking a cotton swab in my throat twice). My insurance paid over $300. I currently have $477 of US medical debt.
I hope the CFPB thingy passes.
edit: @ americans what you actually want though is to gut your garbage nonfunctional "healthcare" system. maybe get a "single-payer" systemâwhere the one person who pay is the government.

ok well that narrows it down to literally any medical procedure performed within the borders of the united states still effecting my credit
#it wasnât strep throat btw but I had 2 bacterial infections at once and they didnât test for those ones :)#Iâm not telling this to be all âwoe is meâ#(though I was and am shaken - especially by the fact I was given 0 warning that stuff could cost money)#Iâm telling this so non Americans have context that almost NOTHING is enough to put you at this threshold.#âare you doing betterâ thanks for asking I got sick on may 20 or so and Iâve been mostly symptom free for about 2 weeks đ#saw my doctor in Canada and he referred my case to an infectious disease specialist

a lot of you probably knows Belphie's story, but I'll summarize just in case.
Devon Rex cats are better for people with allergies (less shed fur + less Fel d1 protein in their saliva), so on February 16, 2024, I went the breeder route and put down a deposit. before Belphie even opened his eyes, he was mine!

every Friday, the breeder sent me a new photo. I had a broken leg, and was basically rotting in bed at that point, so it was the best part of my week. then, at 12 weeks old, I BROUGHT HIM HOME!
at first, he was so alive! like a wind-up monkey that never shut off. he dangled from the wall-hangings, savaged my feet as I walked, and used my elderly cats as jumping poles to do cool acrobatics over. but all this gradually faded.
first, he stopped playing. then he stopped climbing. then he stopped moving much at all. my vet ran tests on him and found multiple pathogens (calcivrius + mycoplasma), but the medication didn't help - he kept declining.
on September 17th, I woke up to find him swollen like a balloon. we finally had an answer: he had Feline infectious Peritonitis, aka FIP. before 2017, this would've been a death sentence. he would've kept bloating until he drowned in his own fluids. and before 2024, I would've been forced to inject him with black market drugs. but thankfully, South Tower Animal Hospital in Fergus, Ontario was doing a study on the oral medication! we drove two hours, enrolled him, and left with the GS-441524 pills.

and he went from those photos above.....to this:
I thought Belphie would die as a kitten. I'd accepted that he would never grow up. but now he gets to LIVE!
and all for the low cost of $7,553.....ahhhahaha........god.
that + a recent home disaster has wiped out my savings, but I still need to pay for Belphie's medication. to remain in this study, I need to do bloodwork monthly until Feb 2025, and he'll need daily pills until March 2025.

I've put a risograph print + enamel pin set up at greerstothers.shop. I hate asking for help, but if you'd like to support Belphie's continued treatment, please consider checking them out!
#belphegor#I'm sorry that I don't have a printed version of the risograph to show you!#it's still in the process of being made#the digital preview doesn't do it justice - it will have a texture akin to pointillism and the yellow + pink inks will be practically neon

The Role of Genetic Testing in Infectious Disease Diagnosis: How Your DNA Can Influence Disease Susceptibility
Infectious diseases have always been a major health concern, but advancements in genetic testing are revolutionizing how we diagnose and manage them. Traditionally, doctors relied on standard infectious disease diagnostics, such as blood tests, cultures, and imaging, to detect pathogens. However, recent developments in genetic testing now allow scientists to understand how an individualâs DNA influences their susceptibility to infections and response to treatment.
This shift toward personalized medicine is changing the landscape of infectious disease testing, offering faster, more precise results and better prevention strategies. In this blog, weâll explore how genetic testing plays a crucial role in infectious disease diagnostics, helping identify risks, improve treatments, and enhance overall healthcare.
How Genetic Testing Influences Infectious Disease Susceptibility
Each personâs immune system responds differently to infections. Some people are naturally resistant to certain diseases, while others may be highly vulnerable. This variation is largely due to genetics.
Genetic Variations and Disease Risk Certain genetic markers can make individuals more susceptible to infections. For example, mutations in the CCR5 gene can either increase or decrease the risk of HIV infection. Similarly, variations in the HLA gene influence how well the immune system recognizes and fights off viruses and bacteria. Genetic testing can identify these variations, allowing doctors to predict an individualâs likelihood of contracting specific diseases.
Hereditary Immune Deficiencies Some people inherit conditions that weaken their immune systems, making them more prone to infections. For instance, Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders (PIDs) are genetic conditions that impair the bodyâs ability to fight off infections. Through genetic testing, these conditions can be diagnosed early, allowing for preventive treatments and better disease management.
Genetic Testing vs. Traditional Infectious Disease Diagnostics
Traditional infectious disease diagnostics primarily focus on detecting pathogens in the body. This includes:
Blood Tests â Detect the presence of antibodies or antigens related to infections.
Culture Tests â Grow and identify bacteria or viruses from patient samples.
PCR Tests â Amplify small amounts of viral or bacterial DNA to confirm infections.
While these methods are effective, they primarily detect an active infection rather than predicting disease susceptibility. This is where genetic testing comes into play.
Genetic testing, unlike traditional methods, examines the patientâs DNA to identify hereditary factors that influence infection risk. It can:
â
Predict susceptibility â Helps determine if a person is genetically more vulnerable to infections. â
Personalize treatment â Identifies how a patient might respond to specific antiviral or antibiotic treatments. â
Enhance prevention â Allows for early interventions, such as vaccinations or lifestyle changes, for high-risk individuals.
Genetic Testing in Infectious Disease Testing & Management
Integrating genetic testing into infectious disease diagnostics is improving how we diagnose, prevent, and treat infections. Hereâs how:
Early Detection & Precision Medicine Genetic insights allow doctors to personalize treatments. For example, Hepatitis C patients with specific IL28B gene variations respond better to certain antiviral therapies. Similarly, tuberculosis treatment can be adjusted based on genetic factors affecting drug metabolism.
Public Health & Disease Control Genetic testing plays a role in understanding disease outbreaks. Scientists use genetic sequencing to track the evolution of viruses like COVID-19, helping predict how they will spread and mutate. This data informs vaccine development and global health policies.
Reducing Antibiotic Resistance Overuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic-resistant infections. Genetic testing can determine if a patient carries genes that make them resistant to certain antibiotics, guiding doctors to prescribe the most effective medication.
Challenges & Ethical Considerations
Despite its advantages, genetic testing in infectious disease diagnostics raises ethical and privacy concerns. Some challenges include:
Data Privacy â DNA information must be protected to prevent misuse.
Cost & Accessibility â Advanced infectious disease testing can be expensive and is not widely available in all regions.
Genetic Discrimination â Employers or insurance companies could misuse genetic data, leading to discrimination against individuals with higher disease risks.
Proper regulations and policies are essential to ensure ethical use of genetic data in healthcare.
The Future of Genetic Testing in Infectious Disease Diagnostics
With advancements in genetic testing, we are moving toward a future where infectious disease diagnostics will not only identify active infections but also predict and prevent them. Personalized medicine will allow doctors to create tailored treatment plans, reducing disease burden and improving patient outcomes.
As research progresses, integrating genetic testing into routine infectious disease testing will become more common, leading to faster, more accurate diagnoses and better global health management.
Final Thoughts
The ability of genetic testing to reveal disease susceptibility is a game-changer in infectious disease diagnostics. While traditional infectious disease testing remains essential for detecting active infections, genetic insights offer a proactive approach to predicting and preventing diseases.
By embracing these advancements responsibly, we can move closer to a future where infectious diseases are not only treated but anticipated and avoided altogether.
Would you consider genetic testing to assess your risk for infectious diseases? Share your thoughts in the comments!
