Some of the cards (and sigils) from Inscryption drawn without reference as well as an initial card design for Menix. It would technically end up being a rare card, since its gimmick is that after the first death it costs one more bone to play - to be in keeping with how Solitudes work in their world.

Everyone who pronounces the name P03 as “pee zero three” or “pee oh three” should legally be required to spell out all the other 1337sp34k names like G0lly and L33pbot letter by letter under threat of public humiliation.

Next up with the Scrybe Redesigns, It’s Grimora! I can’t believe I’ve gotten this far into this little design project already!

Design notes and General thought process/simplified version under the cut:

-First off, something that always bothered me about Grimora and the whole land of the dead in general is that it feels like it has less…effort put into it? I’m not saying that’s the case, but there’s definitely signs maybe the time crunch in Inscryption’s development affected some visual elements, like Grimora’s ghouls all having the same sprite with minor alterations while every other Scrybe has pretty distinct underlings. Seriously, you have so many concepts at your disposal with the undead and ALL of them are skeletons? But I digress, this is becoming less about Grimora.

-So! Grimora here is inspired by a lot of European and English elements, such as her Victorian-inspired dress and her Grotesque-like appearance! (Not being mean, by the way! Fun fact: Gargoyles are not the full body statues on buildings, the Gargoyles are actually decorated waterspouts that direct rainwater off of the building to protect it from damage! But she does have influence from both Gargoyles and Grotesques!)

-Grimora’s inscryption tool being a quill really pushed me into wanting to give her raven-like traits as well! So she has Raven wings on her lower back and, not pictured, but her legs are supposed to be birdlike as well!

-The Death deck consists of various horror monsters like The Headless Horseman, Zombies, And various skeletons, ghosts and ghouls, so I wanted Grimora to reflect a bunch of different classic halloween monsters! Hence her vampire fangs and the sleeves of her shirt resembling mummy wraps if you squint.

-I also wanted her clothes to look a little damaged and torn, as if they were previously worn by a corpse.

-Aaaand that’s it for my notes! I had so much fun with her, and I hope you like my work! Here’s the simplified version:

I'm starting to think that maybe men are incapable of creating true art, like at all. I think of games like "Save the Princess" or more recently "Inscryption" that I played and have been lauded for being deep or whatever.

While I liked both, it just really really felt like it lacked some dimensionality, you know? They were these typical male musings on "the nature of being" in some form or another (granted, save the princess more intellectually and precisely than inscryption, which is sort of content with just being "meta" and calling it a day).

And then I think of the game "Mouthwashing". That's something that truly has stuck with me, in my bones. And, surprise surprise, it was written by a woman. There's just another layer of rawness there. Something visceral and bloody, ravenous even. I like that, and male art has never really given me that outside of like some stuff made by David Lynch, and even then it's just two of his projects and I've seen a decent chunk of his filmography. So yeah.

Yknow, if 079 got into Inscryption and then got into Act 1 as same way P03 — he would be probably caged crow/raven.

I had idea of him being stoat too, but caged bird was much better because of angst ideas

Desecrai, the past scrybe of death, met his husband after needing some time away from the others, playing a few card games against him and getting to know him. They eventually had a daughter, raising her happily in Desecrai’s crypt. Shortly after Nolan was turned into a card, the remaining group of hunters demanded that Desecrai bring Nolan back. He expressed that he was unable to, having been unable to revive his husband. After making sure to secure his daughter’s safety, he fought his hardest, but the hunter’s fought harder. They brought him to the centre island and burned him alive, leaving Grimora with only Desecrai’s mask and quill.

Coven, the past scrybe of magick, was an abusive coward. He tortured his students, lying to them about how it was tradition. However, when attacked, he left his students to fight for him. All but one died, the last of the four hiding away. Coven was kidnapped, and the last remaining student never learned what became of him. Magnificus was soon left to fill his shoes. Professor Atropos, the past scrybe of technology, was a control-freak and a narcissist, seeing the deaths of Nolan, Desecrai, and Lorelei as a way to control all the islands. She kidnapped Coven and turned him into a card, hiding him within her backup plan, a robot for her to exist inside of in case she was killed. A few weeks after the kidnapping, she was attacked and killed by the last of Coven’s students. Po3 powered on a few days later, unfinished and confused.
