Ekushey February

In 2000, UNESCO recognised 21st February is International Mother Language Day in preservation of all vernacular languages of the world. Ekushey February is a national holiday in Bangladesh to commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to protect the Bangla language. On 21st February 1952, a few university students campaigned for the recognition of the Bangla language as a national language of East Pakistan (Bangladesh at that time) and were shot brutally by the Pakistani police.
