Soccer: USMNT & Teams I Follow
Good Riddance to Berhalter: The coach of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) has finally been sent packing.  This should have happened after the 2022 World Cup when his contract expired.  He could have ended on a high note, having accomplished getting us back on track after we failed to compete in the 2018 World Cup.  With the US co-hosting the 2026 World Cup, we needed our team to give a respectable showing in the 2024 Copa America. Canada did what they had to do and played a tough semi-final game against Argentina in the Copa America!

I Heart Soccer / Fútbol: In 1978, I was living in Puerto Rico and my best friend invited me to attend a meeting for the Antilles Pirates high school soccer team. A total book nerd, I was not athletic and hesitated but attended the meeting. The coach, the high school’s trigonometry teacher, spent the first two days showing us a film called “Pepsi Cola presents Pele”.  In the film, Pele described his love of the beautiful game and provided an introduction to everything about soccer (aka fútbol, in the rest of the world).  I played defensive back all through high school and for about 4 years after.
During my early fandom, I would just enjoy the World Cup games and root for both the Mexican and US men’s national teams. Around 2002, I would travel often to Mexico and began to get into Liga Mexicana club games.  The year after moving to Dallas and 2 years after the 2006 World Cup I decided to get into Major League Soccer. I got my first Panini World Cup sticker album for the 2018 World Cup and from there the teams I followed expanded. I now follow 10 primary teams and 3 secondary teams.

Studyblr Introduction
Hi! My name is Morgan, I use she/her pronouns, I am an 18 year old High School senior in the US, and this is my new studyblr!
I wanted to make a studyblr so I can motivate myself to put a bit more effort into my work. I want to do well in college next year, but my study habits are not the greatest. 
I am currently taking:

Chapter Summary: Y/N is suspended for hitting Amadeus Cho and struggles to make amends with her family. While she continues to wrestle with her place as a young woman in the world, now in the spotlight, Peter invites her to a sister march.
A/N: Inspired by the album “A Woman’s Guide to Survival” by Miss Li. This is the chapter that came to me on the tram and made me want to write this fic, so I hope I’ve done it justice.

Y/N was sitting in the middle of the training room working on yesterday’s schoolwork. She liked the training room. It was wall to wall windows on three sides, the floor was black and glossy, and it just felt vast. It was a good place to be alone, and more than ever Y/N wanted to be alone this week. Tony still hadn’t really forgiven her for forcing him to talk the principal down from expulsion to suspension, Pepper was unsuccessfully trying to act normal, and Steve just seemed disappointed. So if she could avoid all of them for the week of her suspension and keep up on her school work, it was really the best she could ask for.
“There you are.” The warm voice of Peter echoed through the giant room as his amplified footfalls grew closer to where she sat in the center of the floor. “Delivery,” he lamely joked, as he approached and dropped a pile of paper next to the girl. Y/N didn’t move from the problem she was working on and she didn’t so much as acknowledge her friend, so Peter carefully sat down next to her and asked, “Still that bad, huh?”
“They’ll come around,” Y/N assured him, or perhaps herself, as she finished writing down the answer to the math problem she had been working on when the boy walked in. She sighed in disbelief. She didn’t really know any of them at all. She’d only been around for a few weeks and she’d already screwed up. She had no way of knowing how long this would last, and her new family aside, she herself had been struggling with the grey moral area she seemed to be sitting in. Disgruntled, Y/N pushed the textbook away from herself, asking, “Is what I did really that bad?”
“I mean, it’s not the approach I would have taken…” Peter pandered lightly.
Y/N jumped on his statement asking, “and what approach would you have taken?” She was desperate for some form of validation. She didn’t want to feel like a bad person. “If someone was boasting, lying about you like a sexual conquest, making you a trophy to be won because of your name, what would you have done?” She was staring straight into Peter’s soul, begging him for an answer.
Peter looked away uncomfortably. “I don’t know,” he admitted to the floor, pulling one knee up to his chest.
“I can’t even picture it,” Y/N realized. She looked off into the distance and could see the quin-jet through the far wall. She lived in a place full of such integrity. This was a place of heroes, and she was just some kid who could handle a cafeteria tray like a baseball bat.
After a moment's silence the gentle boy finally inquired, “Why did you do it?” She’d been asking herself the same question. She paused the think, and then came to a conclusion.
“Because my words meant nothing,” Y/N responded urgently. “No one was going to believe my word over Amadeus Cho, you know that. So I had to be louder.” And she was. The sound of the plastic smacking against Cho’s face was very loud, indeed.
“You really thought all that out during the walk from our table to his?” Peter quizzed in disbelief, looking back at the girl in awe.
“No!” Y/N scoffed as she gave the obvious response. “He was being a dick and I got angry.” Peter snorted at the abrupt change of tone in their conversation and began laughing along with the girl. Y/N was relieved to be laughing with Peter after everything that had happened. If she could laugh despite the guilty pit in her stomach, maybe things would be okay. The two began to grow quiet again, and Y/N sighed and confessed, “I do feel bad.” She didn’t like the serious conversation and she didn’t like feeling guilty, but she knew she needed it, so she continued to explain, “He’s not a bad person. I mean- I don’t think I believe that he’s a bad person, he just did some bad things-“ she paused to self-assess, “But did you hear that smack?” She was mortified. “That shit had to have hurt, and at the end of the day he made some bad choices, but I’m the one who actually hurt someone.”
“Hey,” Peter said as he elbowed Y/N in the side. “He did hurt you. In more ways than one,” the boy mumbled the second half, before quickly inquiring, “How’s that healing up, by the way?” She knew what he was referring to, but Y/N preferred to pretend it wasn’t there, because if it wasn’t there, maybe it didn’t happen. Peter kindly held out a hand to receive the Y/N’s arm and examine it. The bruising had mostly healed, but the last yellow remnants wrapped around her wrist in a splotchy fashion. He frowned and sighed at the sight. “Tell you what,” the boy said, staring at the remnants of her encounter with Amadeus Cho. “Don’t schedule anything for Sunday,” Peter commanded before suddenly standing up and casually walking toward the exit of the vast room.
“What?” Y/N quizzed. When she got no response she yelled after him in her confusion. “Peter!”
“Don’t ask any questions,” Peter called back as he turned around and began walking backwards. “Just trust me on this.” Y/N was confused why her friend would be so coded and was tentative to let him walk away on that note, but she inhaled sharply and nodded in agreement, earning a charming smile from Peter before he disappeared from the room.
It was quiet again and Y/N felt small in the huge facility. The teen miserably looked at the fresh stack of assignments Peter had left her. She had only just reached the end of the work he dropped off yesterday, and she didn’t want to keep going. Y/N groaned and dropped her face into the trigonometry book she’d been working out of before Peter had shown up. “Just land the fucking quin-jet on my head,” she mumbled into the pages, the sound of her voice echoing circles around her. She realized how pathetic she must look and quickly sat up with a gasp, shaking her head as if to wring out the bad vibes. She was completely determined to keep chipping away at the pile of work before her.
She begrudgingly crammed in the last of her trigonometry work and threw the heavy textbook across the room just to get it further away from her. It landed on the tile floor with a resonant smack that rang in her ears and made her immediately regret the impulsive act. Still, she was intent on powering through and picked up the fresh pile of work are started from the beginning of her day, pulling off the AP Lit sheets on existentialism and transcendentalism. She pushed through organic chemistry equations and the introductory history of the world, and by the time she had finished it all the training room was glowing orange with the light of the sunset over the horizon. It was beautiful. The same sunset she’d watched with such uncertainty her first day in the facility. Now it simply filled her with peace, a familiar view in the midst of her renewed confusion.
Y/N began to collect all of the completed paperwork as she watched the warm light of the sun disappear into a blue haze. Gathering everything into her arms, she quietly made her way out of the comforting room and across the building in the dim light. As she wandered down the many halls it took to get to her room, she caught a glimpse of Tony sitting on the couch of the lounge with a drink in his hand, a nightly ritual for the man. The girl paused. She didn’t want to be seen by him, and she especially didn’t want to talk. Y/N nervously ducked her head and tried to sneak by unnoticed.
Just as she’d reached the opposite wall, the man called, “Y/N.” Clearly, he’d noticed. The teen awkwardly stepped backwards, reversing back into view.
“Yeah?” Y/N asked tentatively. Tony didn’t speak, just curtly waved his free hand, a gesture that said, ‘come over here’ with ultimate clarity. Y/N anxiously hurried over to the man, setting the heavy pile of books and homework on the coffee table. She had a feeling this might take a while, and if she kept holding all of those papers her arms would give out before the conversation even started. She didn’t feel like sitting. She’d been sitting all day, so the teen opted to stand in front of the aloof man. She was antsy and began rolling her feet over to the side and back just to keep moving.
Tony rubbed his mouth with his free hand as he leaned forward and set the glass of liquor next to his child’s assignments. As he sat back into the couch he revealed his first card, “Peter told me what you said today-”
“Traitor,” Y/N whispered to the side.
Her  heart leapt into her throat when Tony aggressively demanded, “No, see, this is where you listen.” The violent tone made Y/N fearfully snap back to center, looking at the man and trying to ignore the pounding in her chest. “Peter’s a smart kid and he cares about you. He told me because I care about you, too.”
This was a statement that made Y/N uneasy. She wasn’t convinced and she immediately argued, “You barely even know me.” It was in a hushed, hurt tone. She couldn’t understand where Tony got this idea that he had to put on this concerned parent persona when he’d only known her for a few weeks. She hadn’t exactly done anything to earn his affection since she’d shown up. It hurt to know that she didn’t really have anyone to care for her the way family should, and her own body betrayed her as water began to flood across Y/N’s eyes.
“Don’t I?” the man asked as he pushed off from the couch to stand, causing Y/N to stumble backward in her fear. “I know you’re a strong personality, you don’t like being told what to do. If someone tells you what to do you’re most likely going to do the opposite. You like black even though it’s not a color. Your favorite flavor of ice cream is cake batter, I know because it keeps disappearing from the freezer, and I know that you feel guilty about hitting that boy,” Tony finished. His face softened as he begged, “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Well…” Y/N was annoyed by the persistence of this conversation, and insisted with a bitter tone, “it doesn’t exactly make a difference, now does it?” She didn’t understand this mode of conversing with Tony. So much of what they had done so far was quips and arguing. She didn’t understand why he was so determined and concerned, and she was completely unprepared to deal with it.
“It makes all the difference,” Tony protested. The aggressive nature in his sharp tone startled Y/N and caused the first tear to brim over and roll down her cheek. She thought she wanted to argue with her biological father, but she felt so emotionally fragile she wasn’t sure she could handle it anymore. “We all make dumb mistakes in the heat of the moment, but feeling remorse is what makes you a good person. It means you care about doing the right thing.” Y/N took two steps back, needing to distance herself from the man. She was overwhelmed. Where was this conversation days ago? Before she felt so alone in the great big office building she was so lucky as to call home. And now that it was here she was terrified, this wasn’t what she wanted. It didn’t feel good to be receiving this relentless support, it felt like suffocating and she couldn’t breathe.
The tears began to rain down her face and Tony took a step toward his daughter, while the girl took another step back and yelled, “Stop!” she paused to summon enough air to finish the command, “…consoling me, it doesn’t help!”
“What do you want me to do?” Tony asked pointedly. He was at a loss, but he just wouldn’t give up.
“I don’t know!” The teen near screamed back. She felt her face turning red and thought she must look like a maniac with the water drenching her cheeks. “I’m going crazy here! One moment I’m fine and I understand that what happened with Cho was not my fault, and the next I’m tearing apart all of my clothing in frustration!” She was ranting with no end, and she didn’t feel like stopping. “I keep saying I don’t think he would have forced anything on me and I don’t think he would have hurt me if Peter hadn’t shown up, but I don’t know that. I don’t feel safe anymore, Tony.” She stopped to breathe. The tears suddenly stopped as she said her peace and her face felt sticky like rice as the trails of water began to dry.
Tony inhaled deeply and bumbled the air out through pursed lips as he dropped back on the couch. Y/N watched as the man desperately picked up his drink from the coffee table and downed the mostly-full glass in one go. It was nerve-wracking. These were not the actions of a man in control, and Tony controlled everything in that tower. Tony sat with the empty glass in his trembling hand, hanging limply at his side. He stared at the unlit fireplace across the room and for a moment things seemed still. Then Stark unexpectedly jumped up and yelled as he violently threw his glass across the room. Y/N flinched in terror as it thunderously shattered against the wood floor, scattering in devastation.
Pepper came running into the room in a frenzy, her long silky robe flowing behind her. “What happened?” she asked urgently as she observed the shards of glass and the horrified teen. “Tony?” Pepper inquired carefully as she slowly approached the man consumed by stifled rage. Y/N watched as Pepper strategically touched his stiff shoulder. Carelessly, Tony shook her off and dropped to the couch once again, burying his face in his hands as they worked their way into his hair. He looked ill, almost like he might vomit if the eyes in the room weren’t staring at him. Pepper sat next to the distraught man and glanced up at Y/N, suggesting, “Maybe you should head to your room for the night.”
Y/N nodded and without any argument began hurrying out of the lounge in her panic. Tony held up a hand to signal her to wait. The girl slowed down as she approached the hallway before deciding to stop and listen to what the man had left to say. He hesitantly lifted his head from the other hand and looked at the teenager in anguish. “It’s tearing me apart, too, kid,” Tony mentioned hoarsely. Pepper began to coddle the man only to be met with him holding up a hand to her and complaining, “I’m fine.” Tony got up and walked toward the teenager who was waiting frightfully where the hallway met the corner of the room. He spoke as he crossed, “I don’t know what to do to help because I couldn’t keep this from happening to you in the first place, and I can’t help feeling that that’s on me.”
“I-i…” Y/N stuttered, the sound barely reaching her lips. “It’s no one’s fault,” the girl insisted quietly. At some points, she believed it more than others, but she maintained that it was true. Tony finally stopped face to face with the young and vulnerable teenager. She fearfully looked between his sad eyes, unsure what to say to the man who was meant to care for her. “I don’t blame you,” she whispered.
Tony nodded irregularly and simply said, “Get some sleep,” before turning around and walking back to Pepper. Y/N watched the broken man sit down next to his wife and lay his head on her shoulder. The teen felt stupid to have never realized that Tony took a hit that night, too. She glanced once more at Pepper combing through the mans hair and whispering comfort to him before tearing away to her room. She needed sleep. She needed today to be over.
She woke up early Sunday morning and was eager to see Peter after avoiding Tony all of Saturday. It scared her seeing him so manic Friday night, and she didn’t want to encounter it again. She wasn’t sure if it was nerves or excitement, but as she glanced at the clock she wasn’t surprised to see it read, “4:48 AM”. Y/N knew herself and she knew she wouldn’t get back to sleep, and she’d felt so trapped and stiff being suspended in the facility all week. A peculiar urge came over her that she just couldn’t shake and she rushed across the room to her closet, throwing on her Midtown gym tee with some ill-fitting shorts. She hurriedly pinned her hair back and ran downstairs to the lobby of the building. She saw Steve on the front patio stretching out and jogged to the entrance. As she opened the door, she felt the crisp morning air of autumn cool her skin and Steve looked over the shoulder he was stretching in calm surprise. 
“Can I come with you?” the teen asked uncertainly. She knew she couldn’t keep up with a genetically enhanced soldier, and it seemed silly to even entertain the notion, but it was less about getting out and more about being a part of the family she was dumped into. She could run on her own anytime, and while she needed to feel the movement and the burning in her limbs after such a stressful week, she had an overwhelming urge to do it with Steve.
“As if you hadn’t been punished enough already,” Steve teased, smirking as he waved the girl over to join him in stretching. She wasn’t exactly an expert in the sport of running. She did some track and field in elementary school, but not much else. So she tried to follow Cap, doing the stretches as she saw him doing them. After about five minutes of loosening the tension that resided in her stressed joints, Steve asked, “Are you ready?” Y/N was uncertain if this was a trick question or not. Of course, she’d never be ready to keep up with the mighty Captain America, but she nodded, determined to try her best.
Steve began jogging down the long driveway, and Y/N ran beside him. She knew he was holding himself back for her benefit, but she was kind of glad he was doing it. It meant he wasn’t doing anything begrudgingly. He actually wanted to spend the time with the teenager, and that meant the world to Y/N in the midst of her internal crisis. Everything was so uncertain lately, swirling with confusion in an ever-changing atmosphere. She wanted to join Steve’s ritual because it was consistent. It was always the same, and it was reliable, and Y/N needed that after everything that had come crashing down in her life over the last month. So she pushed, even when her tongue began to taste of metal, she sped up when her body begged her to slow down, and when her mind started to wander from the present task she would glance at Steve, and the determined look on his face as he watched the road before them would inspire her to keep present.
They paused at a drinking fountain located in a nearby park where Y/N could catch her breath and get a drink. She knew this wasn’t Steve’s normal ritual, but she could tell he was looking out for her, trying to make sure he didn’t push her too hard, so he forced her to stop and take a break. As she leaned into the bubbling stream of water, Steve placed his hands on his hips and looked off into the distance mentioning, “You know, Tony means well.” Y/N pulled her face away from the refreshing water and looked at the man, imitating his posture as Cap continued, “He just doesn’t know what to do this time.” Y/N was both intrigued by Steve’s insight and annoyed that her life continued to be the business of everyone in the Avenger’s Facility. The large man sighed and shook his head as he explained, “He wants to do the right thing to help you, he just doesn’t know what that is and it scares him-“
“I’m fine,” Y/N interrupted bitterly. She began walking along the path they’d been running down. “I don’t need his help.”
“Do you really believe that?” Steve asked with the kind of insight only a 100-some-year-old-man could provide. It was infuriating how considerately aware he was.
“I appreciate it, Steve,” Y/N mentioned limply, turning back around to face the man who was still standing at the water fountain, “but I really don’t want to talk about this right now.” At that she turned around and began running again, forcing herself to go faster than she thought possible. Within the blink of an eye, Cap was running right by her side once again like a bug you just can’t seem to shake off. She was really thankful that he hadn’t pushed the matter. It made her feel like she’d been listened to, and that triumph made her want to push harder, to run fast enough that Steve was doing more than just a jog beside her. She tried to smash her feet into the pavement as hard as they would allow, and lengthened her stride, catching that knowing smile in Steve’s perfect teeth as he sped up.
The burn of the rest of the run was almost unbearable, but Y/N was persistent. By the time she got back upstairs to her room and into the shower she was spitting down the drain, half expecting red blood to be swirling around at her feet. The cool water felt relieving as it ran over her sweaty body. Her muscles were sore, but the burning had died down. She used her favorite soap to thoroughly cleanse her body, delighting in the sweet scent, and took extra time to care for her hair even if Peter would be there in less than an hour. She was in a push for time as she stood infront of her wardrobe wrapped in a towel with a toothbrush sticking out of her mouth, trying to figure out what to wear when she didn’t even know where they were going. She decided to just wear her normal ensemble with the exception of pulling out her light-wash denim jacket instead of the leather jacket. It seemed brighter, and it may have been the adrenaline from the run, but she was feeling more playful and present. She was lacing up her classic red converse when her phone began vibrating with Peter’s text that he had arrived. The girl bounded down the stairs and across the building, feeling the pain of the mornings run as she hurried to the lobby where Peter stood speaking to Tony. The sight of her friend made her smile. She felt really good about today.
His Aunt May had dropped him off at the facility, but they took Y/N’s Audi. It was strange for her to have to look away from the console so Peter could secretly type in the address of where they were going just to preserve the surprise. She never could have been prepared for where they arrived. It was a small park, but it was full of people. There were some stands around the edges of the field for groups and organizations from Planned Parenthood to Midtown School’s own feminism club. Without stopping to explain what he’d gotten them into, Peter walked off straight toward the booth from their school, and Y/N raced after him in confusion. The Midtown Feminist Club had small tent covering a modest table with a single petition in the center of it. There were only a few girls from school at the table, but front and center shouting at the crowd was MJ, only pausing her rallying to smile at Peter and Y/N as they approached.
“You guys made it!” Michelle exclaimed gladly as she reached over the table and embraced Peter.
As the two pulled away from each other Y/N admitted, “I’m still not exactly sure what we made it to,” hoping for some voluntary answers.
“Its a sister march,” MJ explained. “It’s not that big, but we’ve been growing every year. It's a festival and march for supporting women, which is why I’m standing here with a petition you two have yet to sign,” the girl pointed out, not caring to hide her ulterior motives as she held up two pens expectantly.
“What for?” Y/N asked as she leaned down to push pen to paper and sign it regardless of the answer. She may not know MJ like Peter did but the girl was still her friend and Y/N wanted to support her.
“We at the Midtown School Feminist Club believe that feminine hygiene products should be supplied in all bathrooms in the school, so this is a petition to the head of schools to divert funding toward that cause.” Y/N was thrilled by MJ’s proposal as she added the still unfamiliar ‘Stark’ to the end of her signature. Having to bring and organize one’s own sanitary products was like asking someone to carry around their own toilet paper. It wasn’t exactly a choice. It seemed like every day there was a teenage girl asking around for a tampon because they just so happened to run out, or not have one because their period took them by surprise. It was a common and biological issue, and it made sense to her that these products should be accessible. Y/N smiled kindly as she handed the pen back to Michelle.
As Peter leaned down on the table to sign his name on MJ’s petition, Y/N asked self-consciously, “So what exactly does one do at a sister march?”
“I have schedules if you want one,” the girl at the table offered. She grabbed a post-card looking itinerary from the left side of the table and handed it to Y/N, who glanced it over as MJ explained, “The booths will be up for another hour and then we march.” Peter lifted his head and MJ gave a closed-mouth grin as she took the second pen back. She seemed to be in her happy place. Y/N noticed she was much more talkative when there was activism involved. “Oh, I have pins, too!” the girl exclaimed as she pulled a couple of buttons from a small cardboard box and handed them to her friends. Y/N examined the baby pink pin in her hand. It had a multi-gender symbol in the middle and around it read, ‘Midtown School Feminist Club’. It looked like it had been designed in Microsoft Paint 15 years ago, but the identity of it made Y/N’s heart flutter as she proudly placed the pin over her heart on the denim jacket. It felt like being a part of something bigger than she was. She looked at a smiley Peter who had just pinned the button onto his sweater and felt the corner of her lip turn up at the adorable boy.
When Michelle began explaining the petition to attendees who approached the table, Peter and Y/N decided to keep walking and explore the festival. They were approaching the booth next to MJ’s when Y/N asked, “So why did you take me here, Peter?” He picked up a pin from a bowl and handed it to Y/N as she strolled alongside the boy uneasily and stumbled over the uneven terrain.
Peter glanced at the ground nervously, before responding, “I thought you could stand for seeing that you’re not alone and that you’re supported.”
Y/N sighed, frustrated that she couldn’t seem to get away from this conversation with anyone. “Is this about the Amadeus Cho thing?” She didn’t want to talk about it. Why could no one get that through their thick heads? She was fine. It sucked, but she wasn’t stuck on it.
Peter stumbled over a bump of grass as he attempted to explain, “Well, yeah, but-”
“Peter, I’m fine,” Y/N insisted, her heart sinking at the topic that resurfaced like a buoy. It was incessant and she was tired of having it.
“I don’t think you believe that as much as you want everyone else to,” Peter stated firmly, taking Y/N back. This was a level of assertiveness she’d never seen from the boy and she wasn’t quite sure how to respond to it.
The boy handed her another button he’d picked off of the table for Planned Parenthood and Y/N systematically added it to her jacket as they continued wandering. “He made some bad decisions, but he didn’t hurt me. If anything I’m more angry at him spreading rumors that he scored a Stark,” Y/N admitted, turning to look at her feet in shame and discomfort.
Peter stopped walking and looked at the closed-off girl. He sighed and confessed, “I don’t get why you’re more upset about him lying about what happened than you are what actually happened.”
It was a revelation to be had. Y/N hadn’t even realized that was what she was feeling and it was hard to come to terms with. It was the presumptions about her for sure, the disgusting toxic masculinity, yes, but at its core, it was all about that name. She wasn’t mad about the party because he did listen to her, and he did stop, but when she showed up to school Monday, “He reduced me to nothing but a name,” she spoke aloud for Peter as she continued to process this realization. “Ask anyone at school and the first thing they’re going to say about me is that I’m Tony Stark’s daughter, but I’m not Tony Stark.” It was hard to explain how being know as Tony Stark’s daughter, how even with all those eyes watching her, or even because they were watching her, she could be completely erased and ignored.
“Well if you ask me,” Peter began unsolicited, “You need to own your name.” Y/N looked up at him, baffled. “People aren’t going to stop knowing you as Tony Stark’s daughter, so you need to change what that means to be a Stark.”
“I guess you’re right,” Y/N responded slowly, still trying to fully comprehend what it was she was agreeing to. They began walking again as she mulled it over. The made their way to the next booth for a nearby safe house for victims of domestic abuse, and Peter handed the fretted teen a small pin that said ‘You are not alone.’ The more she read that message, the more she felt like she understood what Peter was trying to do for her. She was surrounded by people who got it. She’d been having this conversation for days now about Amadeus Cho and how she was dealing with it and it only led to more confusion, but she was standing in this crowd of women, and they understood because they were going through it, too. She didn’t have to tell them a word about what happened, or why she did what she did, or how she felt. They all knew it because they’d felt all those insecurities themselves. She pinned the button on with the rest and continued on with Peter with an open mind and willing attitude she hadn’t held before.
After an hour of visiting all the booths, Y/N’s jacket was plastered with buttons of varying sizes. Planned Parenthood, “Sisters not Cisters”, and “The future is female” littered across the denim, and Y/N was ecstatic. She felt like she could be proud of the beautiful controversy she was wearing and she was ready to show it off to the streets of New York. They caught up with MJ as the crowd began to move and Y/N’s heart fluttered with excitement. Taking those first steps felt momentous, and it was huge. Michelle held up a sign between her two friends and yelled protests and chants along with the crowd, and it made Y/N feel powerful to follow such strong young woman’s lead. Soon enough Peter joined his friend in shouting and Y/N mustered the rest of her energy to scream, “My body, my choice!” on repeat with the mass of women. She felt supported and safe, not just with this crowd, but Peter who had the perspective to bring her to the sister march in the first place, and was now yelling feminist chants full-heartedly at her side.
By nightfall, the group spread around candles to be held as they continued through the darkness. MJ had pushed her way to the front lines and left Y/N and Peter to slow down to the back of the crowd. As a nice woman in front of them lit their candles, Y/N couldn’t help turning to her friend and saying, “Thank you for bringing me today, Peter.” She couldn’t explain how much it meant to her to be in that street. It didn’t fix anything, and it didn’t take away her confusion about everything surrounding her incident with Cho, but she finally felt free again. Walking with Peter in the crowd, felt like facing her fears, and she knew she could return to school Monday with renewed energy, holding her head high.
“You know I would have done anything to bring that smile back to your face,” the boy teased, poking her cheek with a free finger, which caused the girl to turn away shyly. For the first time she felt beautiful, her guard dropping away completely as she marched alongside the supportive boy.
“Would you want a ride to school on Monday?” Y/N asked quickly, eager to change the subject to something normal and friendly.
“Yeah,” Peter accepted mindlessly.
“Yeah?” Y/N wasn’t sure what she expected, but still his answer surprised her. “Cool,” she said, looking forward awkwardly as they continued following the warm candlelight through the sleepy streets of New York.
It was a beautiful orange glow that flickered on the walls of brick buildings. The screaming of chants had mostly died down to soft murmur as the women peacefully marched on. Y/N felt the back of Peter’s hand sweep across her cold fingers as she listened to the lullaby of the protesters. She couldn’t stop thinking how safe she felt surrounded by these people she didn’t even know, and with whom she’d just started walking with this morning. She felt courageous for the first time in a long time as she observed the giant shadows of their bodies casting on the wall. Y/N felt Peter’s hand once again, as it slowly brushed down her wrist and caught on her finger. The clear intent on his end made her pulse flutter. It seemed strange as she tangled her fingers uncoordinatedly with her friend, but as they sorted themselves out and he took her hand in his, it felt so right, she knew it couldn’t be wrong.

Education & Democracy
Consider a ship. The ship is to undertake a journey - it has to sail through several oceans to reach a land far away. On its way, it will encounter difficult waters, storms even - it is guaranteed to be a difficult journey. Such a voyage requires a skilled captain. In order to determine who should command this ship, a committee of people is going to be established. These people will decide which person is best equipped for this task.
You are the first member of this committee, and you are assigned with the task of recruiting other people for this committee. Note that your task right now is not to choose the captain, but to simply assemble a group of people who will make that decision. Contemplate for a moment - on what basis should this committee be chosen?  
The objective of this committee is to choose the best candidate for captain. To do this, we begin by defining a criteria to judge whether a person is a good fit for captain or not. There are, broadly speaking, two categories of concern here.
The first one is technical: what route does the captain plan to take, how does she plan on dealing with storms, etc. The other is not technical: the voyage is not simply about going from point A to point B, it is to ensure that the people onboard are safe and that there is peace and harmony on the ship. For this, we question: is the captain prudent? Is she wise and careful? Is she aggressive? Is she kind?
As average people, it is not possible for us to be experts in each technical aspect - however, in order to judge whether the captain is qualified, it is necessary for at least some of us to possess basic knowledge regarding the technical aspects of sailing.
Now that we’ve established the qualities that we seek in a captain, we can determine the qualities that our committee members must possess.
To judge whether someone has a certain quality, we must possess an understanding of that quality itself. We must understand the benefits of such a quality, and if we seek our captain to have this quality, it must be a good quality, and if it is a good quality, we must ourselves wish to have it. Hence, the people who select the captain must possess the same qualities that they seek in the captain. Our task then boils down to looking for people who possess a subset of the qualities that we wish for the captain to have. Note that if they possess all the qualities that the captain should have, then perhaps they should be captain themselves. Therefore, we restrict our search to people who are strictly less qualified than required for captaincy - they possess certain but not all qualities that are required to become captain.
The people who select the captain, therefore, must be a partial reflection of the captain: the committee must be comprised of people who possess the basics of the technical know-how in order to judge whether the applicant is qualified or not, and also, the values required to judge whether the applicant is the right person to lead and manage the voyage in its non-technical aspects.

The idea of democracy emerged in ancient Greece. The word comes from ‘demos’ - common people, and ‘kratos’ - strength. Democracy is a Greek concept, and interestingly, one of the strongest criticisms against democracy comes from the founding father of Greek philosophy, Socrates. The story above is simply an extension of the argument that Socrates offered - the ship is the society, the captain is the elected government and the committee of people are the voters.
In a democracy by birthright, each citizen that has attained 18 years of age is allowed to vote. That is to say, each citizen’s opinion is given equal weight in the democratic process. This is equivalent to allowing all the sailors on the boat to be a part of the committee that selects the captain - it is, naturally, ‘equal’, but logically, it guarantees an inefficiency in the outcome of the democratic process - it accounts for the opinion of those who do not possess the skills necessary to make an informed decision. In a highly literate society, this would be a small cost to bear - as long as the majority is capable of critical thinking, the outcome would be efficient, along with the positive side effect of creating a sense of equality amongst the citizens. However, we are not living in a highly ‘literate’ society. Statistically higher literacy rates have failed to account for the limitations of the education.
Education all over the world has been moving further and further away from humanities, closer to natural sciences. Particularly in this part of the world, the education system involves very little amount of compulsory education in philosophy or political science. As jobs in these fields are not economically rewarding, students too lack the incentives to take up these fields or study them. However, what this has created is a society of highly educated illiterates - we understand trigonometry but we do not understand how to reason outside the realm of numbers. Engineering is held in high regard, but political literacy, an education in reasoning, in morality and ethics, it is often dismissed as ‘unnecessary’ for the simple fact that these do not lend themselves very easily to jobs that the capitalist society can absorb. By the virtue of understanding calculus or the laws of motion, one is not naturally equipped to make better decisions. The tools necessary to calculate the trajectory of objects are not the same tools that can be used to differentiate between right and wrong, good and bad - the progress of society has been lopsided.

“Government of the people, by the people, for the people” - nearly every introduction to the idea of democracy is built around this quote by Abraham Lincoln. It successfully highlights the essence of a democratic institution: people. The people are essentially the engine of a democracy. They participate in the process by adopting different roles: as citizens, journalists, civil servants, political leaders, etc. A democracy works only when all of these perform their functions effectively. Essentially, people are the ground upon which the 4 pillars of a democracy stand.
Our goal, then, becomes to ensure that this ground is firm, that it is fertile, which is to say, to ensure that people are not just well trained but well educated. This is an uncommon belief, in the sense that nobody would rationally disagree with this statement but there are not many people who understand its implications as well as what it demands from us as human beings - it demands a process of constant education - of learning, unlearning and relearning.
The reluctance to devote time and energy to human sciences is a product of several things. The present job market is one of those factors - but then, we don’t do everything just for the sake of work. There is another factor, one that discourages people from moving beyond newspapers and TV and social media - it is the subjectivity.
Society and its functioning does not have a basis in science, at least not in the same sense as the science of the physical world - there are no exact rules that dictate how society works, or how society should work. There are different schools of thought, and each of these lead us on different paths - perhaps, then, there is no objective measure to navigate this space, to understand this world. This belief is only amplified by the environment - the primary source for information in these matters is the news channels, the newspapers. Information has increased, sensationalism has increased, and without being familiar with the fundamentals the govern the debate, we watch news anchors spit over each other, fact after fact, accusation after accusation. With no simple way to understand and to catch up, it seems, the act of being an informed citizen demands far too much these days - how can we be expected to follow the chain of thought and to verify the information being thrown at us, when all of it is happening so quickly? Most people resort to making their own judgements about this information, then, and here too, our judgement is affected by the limits of our knowledge - without a real ‘education’, not just training, but education, our judgement is simply a byproduct of our sentiments - perhaps, this news channel is reliable, or this anchor seems to make sense, or in the past, he has been correct, or his stance is popular. We employ shortcuts in thinking - heuristics - to arrive at what seems to be an approximately correct answer. However, it is far from correct.
Human sciences are subjective, there is no doubt to this - but how subjective? There is no rule, no method that works in every situation - but are there rules that work well in most situations? Is there a way of thinking that can guide us, generally at least, in processing information and understanding society? This is exactly the purpose behind studying history, political science, economics and philosophy. An education in these subjects is essential in developing an understanding of society and participating efficiently in it. People dismiss the study of history - it is true, I gain nothing from learning the exact date that Hitler came to power. However, that is not the true objective of studying history - it is to understand the world that existed before us, so that we can understand how we got here. It is to learn from the mistakes of the past, so that we are not doomed to repeat it. Philosophy, perhaps, receives the strongest criticism - outside academic spaces, it is considered to be a form of intellectual masturbation, with no meaning to be derived from it. Logic is a branch of philosophy that enables us to understand how to reason for ourselves, to determine the validity of a belief, an idea. It is through philosophy that we study ethics, that we learn about morality, the differentiation between right and wrong, good and bad - terms that we encounter every day in our lives, not only in the broader political domain but the personal one too. Yet, most of us receive nearly no formal education in philosophy, and our education in history is limited to learning dates and listing out, in a formulaic manner, the cause and effect of historical events - 8 points for 4 marks, 10 points for 5 marks. To compensate for the lack of critical thinking, some schools have introduced sessions for moral values - to teach kids what is right and what is wrong. Still, the vision is missing - society continues to evolve - the challenges our parents faced are radically different from the ones we face today. It is not enough to teach them what is right and what is wrong -  what is necessary is to introduce them to a method through which they can determine this for themselves, for the countless challenges that they will face.
Democracy is flawed because its foundation is flawed: most people are not ‘educated’ in the true sense of being educated - they are highly trained to perform specific jobs. They work as engineers, doctors, businessmen, scientists, designers. The difference between training and education is subtle - but it counts, in every way. Our goal then, to be better people, to be better citizens, involves an education that does not end. It is a pursuit without a fixed answer, and as long as the answer keeps changing, we must keep learning.

CHAPTER TWO THE HEXAGON
The halls of Point Place High were almost the same as always. Eric's shoes squeaked on the freshly-waxed floors, and students jostled him as he walked. He had no hope of finding Donna in this crowd, but he found his assigned locker easily. It was his usual one, on the second floor. He leaned against it while studying his schedule. He and Donna must’ve had at least one class together. History was first, followed by homeroom, trigonometry, then— His schedule flew from his hands, giving him a paper cut. He stuck his stinging finger into his mouth and glanced at the thief: Neil Roony, the jock otherwise known as Destroy. He ripped Eric's schedule into two and passed it to Jesse Hardin, the jock generally called Giveback. “Aw, that's too bad, new kid,” Giveback said. He returned Eric's torn schedule. “We'll see you around.”
Destroy and Giveback disappeared around a corner, and Eric went in the opposite direction. The history classroom was a flight up, but a mountain of muscle blocked his way to the stairwell: Chuck Dickerson, one of the Vikings' defensive tackles. “Um, excuse me,” Eric said. “Sure, once you pay the toll.” “What?” “The toll. You're a freshman—” “Actually, I'm a junior.” Chuck squeezed Eric's arm, hard enough to hurt. “You're too scrawny to be a junior, and I've never seen you before.” “That's because I'm a new student,” Eric said and glanced around the hall. Hyde should've been here to back him up. Destroy and Giveback were obnoxious, but they targeted pretty much everyone. Eric hadn't been specifically targeted by anyone since Hyde had knocked out … Chuck Dickerson with one punch their freshman year. “Damn,” Eric muttered. He wasn't in that life. He was in this one, where he and Hyde hadn't even met yet. Chuck's greatest weakness was his glass jaw, but Eric couldn't slug him. He'd never put enough power into his punch. He could try to charm Chuck with his sarcastic wit, but chances were slim Muscle Mountain would appreciate it. Chuck flexed his meaty fingers. “I don't got all day.“ Eric sighed. “How much?” “Five bucks.” Eric removed his wallet from his corduroy pants. He pulled out a five-dollar bill, and Chuck snatched it. “Pleasure doing business,” Chuck said and moved from the stairwell. Eric trudged up to the third floor. So far, day one was off to a fine start. “Yes, it is, isn't it?” That was the angel's voice, and white light burst in front of Eric's eyes. When it faded, the angel was waiting for him at the top of the stairs. “Don't take anything that happens during these seven days for granted, Eric,” the angel said and pointed him toward the history classroom. “Don't dawdle, either. You've still got three minutes before class starts.” “Great,” Eric said, “Three more minutes to sit awkwardly as the 'new kid'.” But as he approached the classroom, the back of Donna's red hair shone at him like a beacon. His pulse throbbed in his ears, and he began to sweat. “Any idea what should I say to her?” “That's on you,” the angel said, “but now you've got two-minutes and fifty-four seconds.” The angel vanished, and Eric dashed into the classroom. He narrowly avoided crashing into another student, but the desks on either side of Donna were unoccupied. Maybe it was the angel's doing, but whatever. An opportunity was an opportunity, and Eric slid into the seat on Donna's right. She didn't seem to notice him. She was doodling in her notebook. Eric considered a dozen greetings in as many seconds. His introduction would set the tone for the next seven days. Their first meeting, in his actual life, had been as burbling, drooling infants. They'd known each other practically from birth. Nothing he could say now would beat that, but that was the key: he knew her. She didn't respond well to pick-up lines. She'd want him to be himself. “Hi, Donna?” he said, and she looked up from her notebook. Her blue eyes fixed on him, with no recognition reflecting in them. He really was a stranger to her. “I'm Eric—” His throat clogged with nerves, with the pain of losing her, but he swallowed it all down. “Your new neighbor.” “Um ... hi?” She shook her head slightly, as if she didn't understand what he'd said. “Did you always go here, or are you new?” She clutched her pencil in her fist, and her eyes flicked toward the teacher's desk. “Because if you're not new, I'm sorry for being an ass and having no idea who you are.” She took a breath before continuing. “But if you are new, how do you know my name?” His ears flushed. He'd made his first mistake, but it wasn't a game-ender. He just needed to add some clarification. “No, I'm new, but what I meant to say is—” Two fingers poked his shoulder. He peered up, and Kelso was scowling down at him. “Out of my seat.” “There's another seat right there.” Eric gestured to the desk to Donna's left. “Yeah, but I want this one,” Kelso said. “It has a better view.” Eric looked to his right. Pam Macy was sitting at the desk beside him. “Well, too bad, buddy,” he said, grinning at Kelso. “You can't always get what you want.” “Yeah, I can.” Kelso grabbed Eric's arm and yanked him from the desk. He sat down, put his backpack on top of the desk, and said to Donna, “Who is this loser?” “Eric,” she said. “He's new here.” “Eric?” Kelso chuckled. “More like Smell-ric.” Donna curled her lip, like she didn't find his burn funny, and turned her attention back to Eric. “I'm sorry. Kelso, here, never learned basic etiquette. You can still be my neighbor.” She patted the desk to her left. “If you've got a non-creepy reason you know my name. Otherwise, I'm gonna kick your ass after class.” “Believe me, she'll do it,” Kelso said. “And if she doesn't, Hyde—” She thrust her elbow into Kelso's side, and he grunted. “So, 'neighbor,'” she said, “what's the answer?” “It's to sit down, be quiet, and pay attention,” Mr. Wilcox said. Their history teacher had entered the classroom, and he was notorious for handing out student-alert forms. Eric got his butt into the seat to Donna's left, and Mr. Wilcox nodded at him. “That’s better.”
Class started. Eric, Donna, and Kelso were three rows from the front, but Mr. Wilcox's gaze always caught everything. Eric couldn't risk writing Donna a note, but he wrote some notes for himself. The angel told him not to take anything that happened for granted. If Donna was going to kiss him willingly within a week, every detail counted. The school bell rang forty-five minutes later. Everyone stood from their desks, including Eric, but Donna didn't acknowledge him. She was too busy shoving Kelso away from Pam Macy.
“Move along, dink,” Donna said. “I don't think that new, annoying girlfriend of yours will appreciate you staring at another girl's boobs.” “We've only been together two weeks!” Kelso said. “I get two more weeks to look at other girls. It's in the rules.” “What rules?” Donna pushed him toward the classroom door. “Kelso's Rules for Idiots?” Eric kept his distance as they disappeared into the hallway. Donna already thought he was creepy, and following her would only strengthen that opinion. Instead, he headed for homeroom. It was on the second floor, in the science lab. He still had Mrs. Bridges, the biology teacher, as his adviser, same as in his other life. Unfortunately, so did Chuck Dickerson. “Hey, freshman.” Chuck sidled up to him and, through the sheer size of his body, ushered Eric away from Mrs. Bridges and the other students. “Gotta pay the toll.” Eric sucked in a breath through his nose. “For what?” “Being a freshman in my homeroom.” “I told you before, I'm a junior.” Chuck cracked his fleshy, bulbous knuckles. “Six bucks. I'm charging you an extra buck for the lip.” “Nah, you don't wanna do that,” someone said behind Chuck, but Eric couldn't see past Chuck's mountainous build. The voice sounded familiar, and when Chuck turned around, Eric caught a glimpse of Hyde. “What you wanna do is walk away.” “Why would I do that? ” Chuck said. Hyde was blocked from view again. “'Cause if you don't, you'll be cryin' in front of the whole school.” Chuck laughed incredulously but stopped a moment later. “No—” Eric peered around Chuck's broad back, but whatever detail Hyde had communicated silently, it was finished. “Hey, man,” Hyde said, nodding at Eric, “what's your name?” “Eric — Forman. Eric Forman.” “Yeah, so...” Hyde was talking to Chuck, “you're gonna leave my new pal, Forman, alone, and you're gonna give back any dough you swiped from him.” Chuck laughed again, this time nervously. “I didn't take any money.” “Five dollars,” Eric said. “He charged me five dollars for climbing the stairs.” “I - I was just kidding,” Chuck said, and he plucked a crumpled five-dollar bill from his jeans pocket. “Take it.” He pressed the five into Eric's hand. The bill was sweaty but intact, and Chuck scurried to the opposite end of the science lab. Hyde scoffed in Chuck's direction. “Moron.” “Man, thank you,” Eric said, with a smile that hurt his cheeks. At least Hyde was still Hyde. “How'd you — I mean, what'd you threaten him with?” “Better you don't know.” Hyde gestured for Eric to follow him. Eric did, toward Mrs. Bridges, who was taking attendance. That seemed a little strange. Usually, Hyde liked to stay out of a teacher's eyeline, but Eric took a mental note to write down later. “I'm Hyde,” Hyde whispered. “Guessing you transferred from somewhere.” A whole other life, but Eric said, “Janesville. I'm a junior.” Hyde smirked. “Junior from Janesville. What's your next class?” “Trig.” “Cool. That'll make it easy to keep an eye on ya.” Hyde didn't speak after that. He listened as Mrs. Bridges went through the school announcements, and he stuck by Eric's side as they left the science lab. They went down the hall together to Ms. McGee's classroom. Apparently, Hyde had trigonometry, too. That was different. In Eric's actual life, Hyde had taken geometry during their junior year. “Hyde!” Donna's voice rang through the air. She dashed toward him, flung her arms around his neck, and he picked her up in an embrace. Her feet lifted off the ground, and he didn't put her down again until he'd kissed her cheek. “California sun did you good,” he said. “You're even hotter.” She smacked his shoulder, but she was also blushing. “Shut up. You must've shot up, like, three inches in the last two weeks. You're finally the same height as me.” Eric's throat thickened. Hyde and Donna were still friends, good friends. . “Hyde,” she said, taking his hand, “Fez and I snagged the — well, look who it is.” Her suspicious gaze made Eric shiver, and Hyde said, “You know him?” “Not as well as he knows me.” Hyde pulled free of Donna's hand. He stepped in front of Eric, clutched his belt buckle, and cocked his head to the side. “You some kind of pervert, Forman?” “Wait, did you say say Forman?” Donna shoved Hyde back and took his place in front of Eric. “Oh, my God — that's what you meant by new neighbor. You're my actual neighbor, like, in the house next door.” “Yes! Exactly.” Eric heaved a sigh as her gaze softened. “Donna, I—” Ms. McGee appeared at the door, eliciting an, “Oh, crap,” from Donna. Ms. McGee was a young but stern-faced woman who didn't tolerate goofing around. Donna grasped Hyde's hand again and the cuff of Eric's sleeve, and she led them to four desks in the back row. They were all the way to the left of the classroom, right in Ms. McGee's blind spot. She had a lazy eye, which had allowed Eric and Donna to make-out during class — in his other life. “Who is this?” Fez said. He was sitting in the back row with them, three desks in, and he looked Eric up and down. “My replacement?” “No one's replacin' ya, Fez … yet,” Hyde said and clasped Eric's shoulder. “This is Junior from Janesville.” He hiked his thumb at Fez. “Junior, that's our buddy, Fez. Have a seat next to him.” Hyde meant the seat on Fez's left. Eric didn't object, at least not out loud, but Hyde's intent was clear: he was trying to put as much distance between Eric and Donna as possible. “Angel,” Eric said in his mind, “please give me and Donna some classes without our friends. I need time to talk to her alone.” He waited for a response, even that unpleasant tickle at the back of his neck, but the angel was incommunicado. Eric wouldn't be, though. Being passive in this situation was the worst thing he could do. He wrote Donna a note, an apology for accidentally creeping her out, and folded it up. “Fez,” he whispered, “could you pass this to Donna — and just Donna? Don't let Hyde touch it.” “So, my replacement wants a favor, does he?” Fez said. “And what will Fez get in return?” “My gratitude.” Fez faced forward, toward the front of the classroom. “No deal.” Eric searched his brain for an appropriate bribe, an offer that wouldn't raise questions or make Fez say, “Good day!” “M&Ms!” Eric said. “I'll buy you a bag and bring it to you tomorrow.” “A big bag?” Fez said. “The biggest bag I can find.” Fez broke into a grin, and he took the folded-up note. He reached across Hyde's desk and whispered, “Donna, Donna!” Hyde's hand clamped around Fez's wrist. “Whatcha got there?” “Junior from Janesville wrote Donna a note, but you're not supposed to touch it.” “That so?” Hyde gave Eric a sideways glance and snatched the note from Fez. He unfolded it, read it, then crammed it into his jeans pocket. Donna appeared none the wiser. Her focus was on Ms. McGee, but when she spared Hyde any attention, he didn't mention the note. Eric's hand curled into a fist under his desk. Donna not getting his note was all right. He’d just have to apologize directly, but getting past Hyde was going to be an issue. Eric shut his notebook when trig ended. He'd written a page full of observations. Hyde had touched Donna no less than five times during class, and Donna's reaction to him was generally positive. They were closer in this version of Eric's life. Maybe too close.
Students emptied out of the classroom. Eric tried to get to Donna, but Fez got in his way. “A big bag of M&Ms,” Fez said. “Remember that.” “But Donna didn't get the note,” Eric said, half-distracted. Hyde had slid his arm around Donna's shoulders, and they were walking toward the classroom door. Fez began to argue, but Eric had no time for that. “Never mind. M&Ms. Tomorrow. Yeah.” He moved past Fez and managed to catch up with Donna and Hyde. “So, study sesh after school?” Hyde said to her. “Sure,” she said, and he withdrew her arm from their shoulders. They'd reached the hallway. “Have fun wearing shorts.” “Not wearing the damn shorts.” “But you have such pretty legs,” she said, with the same, playful tone she reserved only for Eric — in his other life. “Get bent.” Hyde bolted down the hallway, and once he was no longer visible, Eric went up to Donna. “Hey,” said. “Hey.” “What was that all about?” “Oh, Hyde has gym,” she said. “What've you got next?” “Study hall … and an apology,” he said, and her eyebrows rose in response. “Donna, I'm sorry for coming off as a weirdo. I should've been more precise about the whole neighbor thing.” Her lips lifted into a smile. “You didn't come off as a weirdo.” “That's a relief.” “You came off as a creepy stalker.” He broke eye-contact with her. Was he the only one with so much at stake here? Or were the students rushing to their classes in a similar predicament? They could've all been fighting to get the loves of the life back — no. This purgatory had been created solely for him. She chuckled. “It's fine. Listen, I've got study hall, too. I'll show you where it is.” Their shoes squeaked in a syncopated rhythm on the floor. Donna had set a slow pace, but Eric wasn't so naïve as to believe it was because of him.
They turned a corner. Study hall was all the way at the eastern end of the school. He'd been silent so far, measuring the risk-benefit ratio of speaking what was on his mind. Going the humorous route might win her over, but he needed more information. “So, you and Hyde, huh?” he said, scratching his wrist. “Me and Hyde what?” His stomach lurched, but he had to keep going. “You're together.” She scrunched her face. “No way. I've known him, like, my whole life. He's more like a brother. ” “He might not see it that way.” “Well, that's too bad.” Blood rushed to her cheeks. “What do you care, anyway?” He put up his hands. “I just don't want to step on anyone's toes. It's hard making friends when you move to a new town — and you seem like a really nice person. But if you and Hyde are dating, he probably won't want us becoming friends.” “Okay, look.” She stopped him a few steps from the study hall. “I'll give you a break today because you're new, but I choose my friendships, not Hyde. Not you. Me.” “Got it — and I'm sorry. Again.” “Good.” She gestured to the study hall, and he entered first. The classroom was full of eight-seat tables, not desks. Students from every grade sat around them. Some had their notebooks out, but the first study hall of the year was usually a free-for-all. Especially with Mrs. Fletcher supervising. She'd been Eric's teacher for Algebra II and geometry, and she let students get away with sing-a longs and all sorts of nonsense. He loved Mrs. Fletcher. “I guess I'll go sit over there.” He jutted his chin toward a relatively empty table. “I'll see you around.” “No, wait.” Donna tugged on his sleeve before he could run off. “I'll go with you.” She moved behind him and gave him a little push. “Hurry, hurry—” He didn't understand her urgency, but he darted to the table. She crashed into his back when he stopped, as if she'd been right on his heels, and she chose a seat with her back to the center of the room. “What was that?” Eric said with a laugh. He sat beside her, and she scooted her chair closer to him. “That was me trying to avoid someone,” she whispered. Her breath heated his ear, and the sensation traveled to places it shouldn't have. “Kelso's girlfriend. She's this obnoxious sophomore, and he keeps bringing her to my house.” “Sounds like fun,” Eric whispered back. “Oh, tons. She keeps trying to be friends with me. But we're, like, total opposites. I care about women's rights and rock, and she cares about popularity and … and makeup.” She shuddered. “I can't take another second of her blabbing about my pores. She's—” “Donna?” a high-pitched, feminine voice said. Jackie was running to their table. “Oh, my God — Donna!” Donna groaned and pressed her forehead to the table. Jackie plunked down in the unoccupied chair next to her. “Donna — a men's T-shirt?” She pinched the material of Donna's gray-and-black shirt. “Why would you wear such a drab thing on the first day of school?” Donna raised her head from the table and gave Eric a look, one that said, “See what I mean?” She was obviously miserable about Jackie's presence, and Eric couldn’t blame her. But this was the happiest he’d ever been to see Jackie. She was his ticket to Donna's friendship. “Say,” Eric said, “aren't you Kelso's girlfriend?” “Yeah. ” Jackie shoved Donna's shoulder. “Donna, sit up straight. We've got to talk about your wardrobe — and your posture.” “Quit it, Jackie!” Donna said, and Eric thanked his luck. She'd said Jackie's name. Now he wouldn't have to be as careful. Jackie smoothed the material of her dress. “I'm doing you a favor! You're a junior now, which means you can mingle with seniors … which means popularity. You have to dress the part.” “I don't have to do anything.” Donna stood and slung her backpack onto her shoulder. “You're being rude, not only to me but to my new neighbor. His family just moved into the house next to mine.” She gestured at Eric. “You're probably gonna see a lot of him, so why don't you get to know him?” Donna's hair bounced against her backpack as she left study hall. She was running toward the door, and Jackie leapt from her chair. “Hold on, Jackie,” Eric said, standing. “Your boyfriend's a cheater.” “What?” Jackie whipped toward him. “What are you talking about?” “I'm—” “Children!” Mrs. Fletcher said from the front of the classroom. “Talking is fine, but please do so while seated.” “Yes, Mrs. Fletcher,” Eric and Jackie said together. They sat down again, and Jackie glared at Eric. He  gripped the edge of the table. Telling Jackie the truth would do triple duty: spare her the heartbreak of being Kelso's girlfriend, spare Donna the headache of listening to Jackie, and score Eric major points with Donna — for sparing her that headache. “Kelso and I had history class together,” he said, “and he spent it looking at Pam Macy's ample chest.” “Oh, that is not true!” Jackie patted her heart. “Michael's in love with me. He told me so last week.” “Trust me on this, Jackie. Kelso is a liar, and he's going to cheat on you the first chance he—” Pain bit into Eric's shin. “Kick me all you want — actually, please don't — but Kelso is — ow!” Jackie had kicked him again. He bent down and rubbed his leg. He was sure to have a bruise, but it would be worth it. “No man would dare cheat on me,” she said and began counting off on her fingers. “First, I'm beautiful. Second, I'm rich. Third, my dad would sue anyone who even thought of cheating on me.” She jabbed his chest. “Tell me where your dad works.” “Why, so you can get him fired?” He covered his chest protectively. The flesh was tender beneath his shirt. Another bruise had to be forming. “Don't kill the messenger.” Jackie pushed herself from the table and stood up. “What do you know anyway? You're new here.” “I just don't want to see … someone as beautiful and rich as you get hurt,” he said. A strange squeak left her throat. Maybe he’d gotten through to her. Or she was suffering synaptic overload, like those androids in that episode of Star Trek. Smoke didn't pour from her ears, but if her brain was going to explode, its chunks wouldn't land on him. He snatched his backpack, raced from the study hall, and didn't look back.
Eric tried to lose Fez on the way to the cafeteria. They'd just spent the last forty-five minutes together in English class, during which Fez passed him notes about M&Ms. Eric's backpack was crowded with wasted paper, but he had no chance to empty it. Fez remained by his side, rambling about candy, even in the lunch line. But Eric's annoyance faded once Donna waved him over to her table. Hyde was already there, sitting on Donna's left side. He made sure Fez sat on Donna's right. That allowed Eric the spot across from her. Kelso, however, was absent, a fact Hyde didn't appear to like. “Jackie's probably got him 'occupied,” Hyde said. “Man, he's gotta break up with her already.” Donna nodded. “I know! She accosted me in study hall, and—” She laughed and pointed at Eric. “And I left poor Eric to fend for himself. How did that go, by the way?” “She kicked me.”  “She what?” Donna covered her mouth and laughed some more. Hyde saluted him. “Welcome to Point Place High, Junior.” “Oh, I would love to be kicked by the luscious Jackie Burkhart,” Fez said. “She is so … luscious.” “She's not luscious, man,” Hyde said. “She's abrasive—” His arm shot across the table, and his hand hovered over Eric's bowl of chili. “I wouldn't.” Eric gripped his spoon. He was the only one who'd gotten the chili. Chicken wings filled Donna and Fez's food tray, and Hyde's had only a bagel. “I know lunch food usually sucks,” Eric said, “but it can't be that bad.” “Yeah, it can.” Hyde moved his hand off Eric's bowl. “Go fishing. See what you find.” Eric stuck his spoon into the chili. Hyde and Donna pounded the table in a drum roll as Eric scooped out a cigarette butt slathered in sauce. “Congrats,” Hyde said. “We have a winner.” “Oh, God, that's right.” Eric dropped the spoon back into the chili and shoved his tray away from him. “Your—” He bit his cheek to shut himself up. Hyde's mom was the lunch lady, but Eric wasn't supposed to know that. In his other life, “Gross” Edna hadn't served him school food in ages. In this one, he'd been so irritated by Fez's candy ramblings he hadn't paid attention. When he’d reached the front of the lunch line, chili plopped into his bowl, and he'd walked away. Donna turned her tray ninety degrees and edged it closer to Eric. “You can share my chicken wings. They were made by her assistant. They're safe … I'm pretty sure.” “Thanks,” Eric said, and warmth spread in his chest as he ate. It was partly from the over-spiced chicken wings, partly from Donna's kindness. If he weren't already in love with her, he'd fall in love with her all over again.
The rest of Eric's school day resulted in an interesting observation — and more than a little boredom. Donna wasn't in his chemistry class. Neither were Hyde, Fez, or Kelso, but Eric had someone to keep him company: Buddy Morgan. Buddy introduced himself first, and the class went by faster than it would have otherwise. Gym was next, a sweaty, torturous set of evaluatory drills with Fez and Kelso. In between huffing and puffing, though, Eric learned where Kelso had been during lunch: searching for Jackie. “I looked everywhere for her,” Kelso said to Fez, loud enough for Eric to overhear. “Being in school is supposed to make it easier to make out, not harder.” “How does it make it easier?” Fez said. “'Cause we're in the same building. We should've been Frenching all over the halls. Instead, I was running through them alone.” Eric grinned. Doing drills made the bruise on his shin hurt, but it was a small price to pay if his plan had worked. Jackie was avoiding Kelso. If that led to a breakup, then Donna would inevitably learn Eric's part in it, and he'd be rewarded. Maybe with a kiss. That thought kept Eric smiling through music, his final class of the day. Like chemistry, it offered no new opportunities. His not-yet friends were elsewhere, and he didn't run into them again in the parking lot. He drove home with the radio on full-blast. Doubt skulked inside his mind, but WFPP's block of Todd Rundgren songs distracted him from it. At the end of “Hello It's Me,” the station's announced a contest, offering tickets to Rundgren's sold-out show in Milwaukee this Sunday.” “Holy crap—” Eric swerved the Vista Cruiser to the right but regained control before he crashed into a lamppost. He pulled over on Pinewood Avenue to regroup. Todd Rundgren — his and Donna's first kiss had happened after that concert. He needed to win those tickets. His parents were still at work when he arrived at the house, and he dragged his tired body upstairs. Homework could wait. He'd finish it easily; none of his classes were new. He'd already been through them in his other life. Sleep came quickly, but a rough hand jostled him awake. His dad was standing over him, scowling. “Your mom's making us meet the neighbors,” he said. “Comb your hair — and try not to be a dumbass.” Red left him, and Eric checked himself over in the mirror above his dresser. He'd slept in his clothes. They were rumpled, and he straightened them out as best he could. He also combed his hair, put on his shoes, and practically flew down the stairs. Finally, he'd get a chance to talk to Donna without anyone interfering. In the kitchen, his mom passed him a plate of brownies. “Now, these are for the Pinciottis,” she said, “so don't touch.” “Got it, Mom.” “Red,” she said, “try to smile.” Red grimaced, and Eric said, “That's as good as you're gonna get from him.” “Watch it,” Red said, and they all left the kitchen through the sliding door. The Pinciottis were already in the driveway. Midge had a pie in her hands, but Bob spoke first. “Hiya, neighbors! I'm Bob Pinciotti.” He clasped Midge's shoulder. “This is my wife, Midge...” He cupped the back of Donna's head. “And this is our daughter, Donna.” “Well, it's wonderful to finally meet you,” Mom said. Midge frowned. “I thought we met yesterday. That wasn't you?” “No — I mean, yes.” Mom shut her eyes and shook her head. “That was me, but it's nice to finally meet all of you. I'm Kitty.” She patted Red's arm. “This is Red, and...” She ushered Eric in front of her. “This is our son, Eric.” Eric's focus shifted to Donna. The sun had sunk low in the sky, and its rays imbued her with a heavenly glow. He was staring  — and it had to stop. He blinked twice, handed Bob the plate of brownies, and Midge gave Red the pie. That led to Eric's mom inviting the Pinciottis into the house. Bob and Midge accepted the offer, but Eric and Donna remained outside on the driveway. “So,” Donna said, “your parents seem nice.” “My mom is. My dad … well, he's a hardass.” “My dad's the opposite. Total softy.” Eric rocked on his heels. The conversation was going well. They were sharing with each other, but in his other life he'd had years to earn a kiss. In this one, he had only a week. “So your mom's the disciplinarian?” he said. He knew the answer, but this path of questioning could lead to a promising destination. She snorted. “Please. My parents wouldn't recognize discipline if it slapped them on the butt.” “You sound thrilled about that.” “Well, you know...” She brushed a stray lock of hair from her face. Eric hesitated before replying. Hyde could relate to her family situation better. They both had neglectful parents, whereas Eric's were a bit too present. But that had never stopped him from sympathizing with her, and it wouldn't stop him now. “They don't pay all that much attention to you, do they?” he said. She shrugged, and her gaze dropped to the pavement. She wasn't talking, but she hadn't left. He opened his mouth to change course, but she said, “They get into, like, really weird fads. Wrapped up in whatever's 'hip' for the month. Some of it's pretty disturbing.” “Believe me, Donna, I know from disturbing.” He laughed uncomfortably. “One time, I walked in my parents having sex. Their bedroom wasn't locked. I needed to get help for a friend of mine — my mom's a nurse. Anyway, I opened the door...” He swallowed as the memory resurfaced. “and there my parents were, naked and groaning each other's names—” Her gaze rose from the ground, and her eyes widened. “Oh, God, ew!” “I can still see them in my mind … hear them.” He wasn't lying. Discussing this horror had brought it back in full color. Sharing it with Donna so soon was a huge risk, but he needed to prove they had experiences in common. “It was just — it's awful.” “Okay, I'm gonna tell you something I've never told anybody else, all right?” She stepped closer to him. “When I was twelve, I saw my parents doing it...” Her story about finding her parents in her backyard, having sex on the hammock, was worse than his story. His responses were natural as she recounted it here, but most of his shock came from her openness. In his other life, he'd spent seventeen years with her. In this one, they'd had barely a few hours together, yet her instinct was to comfort him. She was wonderful … and he'd lost her. Not this time. He'd get that kiss. He'd return to his other life, and their relationship would be fixed, all by being himself. Because God loved him. “Oh, it won't be that easy,” the angel said in his mind, and Eric waved dismissively at his disembodied voice. Donna followed his hand movements, as if he were swatting at a fly. He clenched his fist and hid it in his pocket, and she continued her story. She described the checkerboard pattern left by the hammock on her parents' bodies, and when she finished, he said, “That must've completely freaked you out.” “No kidding! But the pain eventually receded, and I was able to live again.” “Speaking of living again...” He scratched the back of his head. “I heard Todd Rundgren's playing County Stadium in Milwaukee this Sunday.” “You like Todd Rundgren?” “Oh, yeah. WFPP's having a contest all week to win tickets. I'm gonna try to get a pair.” “Man, going to a Rundgren concert would be so cool.” She cracked her knuckles, something she often did while thinking. “You know what? I'm gonna try to win a pair, too.” “May the Force be with you.” “What?” He shut his eyes and cursed inwardly. Star Wars wouldn't come out for another seven months. He scavenged for a decent cover, but the patio door slid open behind him. His parents returned to the driveway with Bob and Midge. Red's face was slightly flushed, but he stayed quiet as Mom said, “Eric, the Pinciottis have agreed to join us for dinner this Saturday.” “Pumpkin, you're invited, too,” Bob said to Donna, and Eric's heart bounced against his ribs. Kiss-opportunities were increasing. He just had to take advantage of them. Midge grinned, and her teeth flashed in the patio light  “We'll see you on Saturday!” “Nice to meet you,” Donna said to Eric's parents and checked her watch. “God, Hyde must think I've fallen into a black hole.” She patted Eric's shoulder. “I'll see you tomorrow?” “Yeah. Hey, I could—” drive you to school, Eric intended to say, but she was already gone, stolen from him by her friendship with Hyde.

How does middle/high school work, what's it like and what's the difference between the two? I really need some help! (I know this is a weird question but I was homeschooled most of my life so I have no idea how middle/high school work and what's it like.)

How to Write About Middle School/High Schools

Middle school and high school are key times within a child’s life.
Gone are the days where they only had one teacher to tell them everything; now they have to change classes and have harder content that they have to study.
There’s more friend drama now that they’re all developing their own identities and their sense of who’s a good person and who’s not, and along with that comes astronomical stress compared to their elementary school years.
There’s also puberty, which sucks, and the beginnings of serious extracurricular activities that require a lot of time and dedication.
*This may vary from school to school*
Middle school = Grades 6-8 (Kids 11 to 13)
High school = Grades 9-12 (Kids 14 to 18)
Since many people have no idea how to write about schools, whether they be homeschooled or have graduated a while ago, here’s a few tips on how to write middle school and high school.
Just a note that I’m going to be describing public schools and not private schools, Also, schools are going to be different across the country; I’m a New Yorker, and my school knowledge and experience can be way different than those of someone who went to school in the south or in the midwest.
**IMPORTANT NOTICE!**
“High school” and “middle school” are not capitalized! Only capitalize it when you’re saying the name of the school. (Example: Eldridge Middle School)
1. Know What Grades Take Which Courses (AKA Know All the Technical Stuff)

Nothing demonstrates complete lack of knowledge about the school system than not knowing the basic technical side of it, such as which grades take which classes. Aside from various exceptions, an eighth grader isn’t going to be taking Physics and a twelfth grader isn’t going to be taking Biology.
Here’s the list of the core classes in middle school and high school:
English
Math
Science
Social Studies
Foreign Language
These classes are going to be the hardest and the ones that the students stress out the most about.
Grade 6
- English
Read things like The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe and Tuck Everlasting
- Math
Multiplication and division
Decimals
- Science
Basic physics…like, very, very, very basic. Also a bit of chemistry.
-Social Studies
Ancient history
Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Persia, China, India, Renaissance, etc.
- Foreign Language
In my school, we didn’t start a foreign language until seventh grade.
This year is very stressful because it’s the transition from elementary to middle school. They now have things like detention and multiple teachers and changing classes.
Grade 7
- English
Reading books like My Fair Lady, The Miracle Worker, The Pearl, etc.
- Math
Starting to work with “x.”
Percents, statistics, basic algebra.
- Science
Basic biology
- Social Studies
Beginnings of US history. From the Native Americans to the Industrial Revolution.
- Foreign Language
Very basic facts
How to say hi, describe yourself, furniture, food, activities, ask questions, etc.
This is a pretty chill year. You’re all adjusted from last year and have more stable friendships.
Grade 8
-English
Reading books like Call of the Wild, The Outsiders, the White Mountains.
Starting to get into Shakespeare
More in-depth analysis
-Math
Algebra
Equations, find x, etc.
-Science
Earth Science
Rocks, weather, space, etc.
-Social Studies
End of US history, from the Industrial Revolution to present day
-Foreign Language
Developing the basics learned in seventh grade.
This year can be hard because students start taking more difficult, high-school level classes.
Grade 9
- English
Reading books like To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, Great Expectations, and Romeo and Juliet
Introduction to research papers
- Math
Geometry
Learning about shapes and how to find the area and sides
Most useless math there is unless you want to build things
- Science
Biology
Learning about living things, cells, ecosystems, etc.
- Social Studies
Global History
Beginning of the world to the Renaissance
- Foreign Language
More complex sentence structure. Learn different tenses other than the present tense.
Yikes! This year is incredibly hard; high school is so much more difficult than middle school! There’s an open campus and a lot more freedom, but there’s also a lot more room for error. The first year where the grades start actually counting.
Grade 10
- English
Reading books like Macbeth, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Canterbury Tales, Beowulf, and Animal Farm.
- Math
Trigonometry/Algebra II
Very difficult Algebra and Trigonometry
- Science
Chemistry
Learning about molecules, elements, formulas, and reactions.
This is the science with the periodic table and mixing stuff that blows up.
- Social Studies
Global History
The Renaissance to present day
- Foreign Language
Learning new tenses other than Past, Present, and Future (Ex: Imperfect, Conditional)
This year is okay. Mostly spent worrying about Junior year.
Grade 11
- English
Reading books like Hamlet, The Great Gatsby, and Farenheit 451
- Math
Pre-Calculus
Yikes

Physics
Also Yikes
Learn the science of movement
- Social Studies
Complete US History
Advanced Placement US History is abbreviated to APUSH (pronounced ay-push)

This year is very stressful because it’s the year that counts the most; colleges look mostly at the grades from this year.
Everyone is freaking out and taking AP and SAT and ACT prep classes. A shit-show in its purest form.
Grade 12
- English
Read books like Othello, The Crucible, and The Scarlett Letter
Senior paper
- Math
Calculus
YIIIIIIIIKKKKKEEEEESS
College course
- Science
AP Biology, Chemistry, or Earth Science 
Students must choose one or the other or an elective science like Marine Biology or Anatomy
- Social Studies
Government and Economics
Two courses that are each only a semester long. You either take one class for the first semester and switch to the other class second semester or switch the classes every other day
- Foreign Language
Nobody even cares anymore
This year is the most fun year of high school; although some colleges do still look at the grades, many students are already committed to college and get a case of “Senioritis” which is when they let their grades slip and take it easy because they don’t have to worry about impressing colleges.
OKAY THAT TOOK A LOT MORE TIME THAN IT SHOULD’VE
2. Know the Types of Classes

Depending on their skill level in the area, kids can take a variety of different versions of these core classes. There’s reagents classes, honors classes, and advanced placement (AP) classes.
At least in New York, reagents classes take state-made reagents at the end of the year as a final exam.
Honors classes are basically advanced versions of reagents classes. They teach at a faster pace and go more in-depth into the topics. They, too, take reagents at the end of the year.
AP classes are the hardest of them all. They’re college-level classes and make students eligible to take the AP test. Depending on what score they get on the AP (1-5), they can skip the 101 classes in college.
(Example: If a girl gets a 4 on the Global History AP, she can skip Global History 101 in college)
Junior year is also the year students take the SAT and ACT, huge tests that are very important for college.
Other schools may have other kinds of classes like IB, but this whole list is JUST ACCORDING TO MY EXPERIENCES.
3. Just Know that School Is Not the Worst Place on Earth

Although there are certain times when school can be the absolute worst thing ever and there are a lot of flaws in the education system, it’s not all downsides!
School is a place where you learn new things, meet new friends, and get to hang out with people you wouldn’t hang out with otherwise.
There are extracurricular activities available for FREE that you can join, and aside from being academic, school sponsors a very nice social climate that is crucial for kids to develop skills in communication and interaction with others.
Of course, high school is also the place where people start getting into serious relationships, which you can research here.
