New Scotland Yard: Hard Contract (1.5, LWT, 1972)
"I was just wondering what it was like to kill somebody."
"Well, that's a nice thought to start the day, innit?"
"In all my stint in the army, I never did. Not like -"
"Not like me."
"Yeah, well, you bagged a few terrorists in your time, didn't you? I was just wondering..."
"What it was like?"
"Yeah."
"Well, it... it was like... like nothing. You just sit on a roof and wait. For movement. The sun on a rifle. Just a flash, a glint. The first bullet gets you - or gets them, it's as simple as that."
"No involvement?"
"None."

Woodvine takes on a case belonging to a hospitalised#colleague‚ also inheriting the man's number two (a typically gruff but likeable Windsor Davies). it's a fairly routine case involving#a contract killer (Pat O'Connell‚ the year before he found household recognition in The Brothers‚ and sporting the same slightly shaky#northern accent he had in his Saint appearance a few years prior). there's the hints of something larger at play; the shadowy figure who's#actually paying for the killings goes unidentified and has possible links to people in high office‚ the seeds of conspiracy that i very#much hope will be returned to (but i honestly don't know yet if this is the type of show to keep up with such threads or just dangle and#abandon). a fairly solid ep but it does fail to interrogate the potential of how an ex soldier back from service in Northern Ireland falls#into mercenary work and killing for profit.. too touchy an idea in 72 perhaps#Woodvine gets a few lighter moments too; perhaps it's being away from Carlisle?? they are an odd couple

Born To Kill COMPLETE SERIES 2005-2016
“Going back to the age-old Nature vs Nurture debate, a good way to think about it is that genetics provide an individual with a spectrum and the individual’s environment, developmental and otherwise, determines where you lie on it. A predisposition may lie dormant for eternity, but feed it a stressful environment and increased risk factors such as malnourishment and trauma, and it will manifest. Clinical facts must be tempered with ethical concerns when applying science to society.” Source

More quarter-final misery as Ireland suffer Olympic heartbreak after Fiji score controversial winner
And while they gave themselves a shot, so it proved beyond Ireland tonight. Fiji came from behind to beat Ireland 19-15 in tonight’s quarter-final at the Stade de France. Fiji – who remain unbeaten through three Olympic Games – will roll on in their bid to win gold at a third successive Olympics in Saturday’s medal matches. Ireland’s dream of a medal comes to an end. Like the 14-12 pool defeat to New Zealand earlier in the day, Ireland had given themselves a chance of pulling off an upset. Two tries from Chay Mullins and another from Zac Ward had the Irish fans in the Stade de France dreaming of a possible semi-final place as they led 15-7 in the second half. But unlike the trend of upsets on a night when South Africa beat favourites New Zealand and the hosts France overcame the more fancied Argentina, a giant-killing proved elusive to Ireland in the end. The defending champions lived up to their Flying Fijians reputation when Iosefo Baleiwairiki scorched through to score their opening try after just 30 seconds. However, Ireland delivered the perfect response minutes later. Mullins scored the opening try for Ireland and he added a second just before half-time to put them 10-7 in front. Could they go on to close the deal this time? It looked like it when Ward stretched in at the corner to score Ireland’s third try. But Fiji fought back; they were never going to give up their crown easily. Joji Nasova scored Fiji’s second to close Ireland’s advantage to 15-12. It was all set up for a grandstand finish. And then came a controversial winner as Waisea Nacuqu gathered a bouncing ball from the restart to score – although it looked like Fiji knocked the ball on in the lead up. It was the Olympic champions who closed it out from there. “We definitely had the winning of that game but it wasn’t them beating us, it was us just giving a loose ball away here or there and just allowing them to attack and score with their opportunities really quickly,” captain Harry McNulty said following the Fiji defeat. “If you’re going to lose a game it’s because a team has out-worked you or forced you through a tonne of phases, that you’re out on your feet, not something that takes place without a ruck taking place. “Those can be annoying but that’s the way that they play and we have to make sure we can stop it. “Disappointing in that way, but we can take a lot of confidence from the fact that we’re pushing Fiji and New Zealand to within a score, the two best teams to ever play Rugby Sevens, and there’s so much more that this team can give. “I just told the players I don’t think there’s any better team that I’ve played with than this group of guys, we have the capabilities of playing the best in the world.” Ireland will have regrets, like they would have had from their defeat to New Zealand earlier in the day. Ireland played like they had New Zealand’s number and produced their best rugby of the Olympics. Tries from the impressive Ward and Jordan Conroy set Ireland up for a 12-0 half-time lead but Ireland failed to score again in the second half with mistakes letting New Zealand get a foothold. A five-pointer from Leroy Carter and late try from Ngarohi McGarvey-Black as well as the conversion from Andrew Knewstubb nipped a two-point win. And maybe that was really where paradise was lost for this Irish team at these Olympics. So no medal matches for Ireland on Saturday, instead they will fight it out for the more minor placings. They will finish higher than their 10th place at Tokyo three years ago but the regrets of what could have been in their fight against Fiji and their battle with New Zealand will linger. Ireland: H McNulty, M Roche, Z Ward, J Conroy, T Kennedy, G Mullin, Niall Comerford. Replacements: J Kelly, A Smith, C Mullins, H Keenan, H Lennox. Fiji: J Talacolo, I Baleiwairiki, J Tuwai, I Teba, K Rasaku, S Ravutaumada, R Josaia, Replacements: J Nasova, J Matana, T Veilawa, W Nacuqu, F Sauturaga Referee: N Hogan (NZL) Source link via The Novum Times

Young Belfast star Jude Hill is back in new horror movie, Mandrake
Jude Hill, who recently won acclaim for playing Buddy in Kenneth Branagh's film Belfast, is set to make his return to the screen in new horror movie, Mandrake, which was shot in Northern Ireland.
Mandrake is the debut feature by Lisburn director Lynne Davison and will air on streaming channel Shudder, which specialises in horror, thrillers and supernatural, on 10 November.
youtube
Mandrake also stars Deidre Mullins (The Dark Mile and Man Down), Derbhle Crotty (Notes on a Scandal), and Paul Kennedy (House of The Dragon) and the cast say that 12-year-old Jude, who is from the village of Gilford in Co Down, regaled the filmmaking team with stories from his time on Belfast.

Derbhle Crotty in Mandrake
The new film was well received at the Glasgow Film Festival earlier this year and follows probation officer Cathy Madden, who is given the task of rehabilitating notorious killer 'Bloody' Mary Laidlaw back into society after twenty years in jail.
Cathy has always believed that every client deserves a shot at redemption, but her beliefs are firmly tested when two children disappear near Mary's farm.
Tumblr media
Mandrake will be available to view on Shudder on November 10
Jude won the Critics' Choice Award for Best Young Performer for this role in Belfast, after landing the part out of 300 young actors who auditioned.
He also played the titular role in the World War II-set short film Rian, which premiered at the 2021 CineMagic, and is signed with United Talent Agency in the US.
Earlier this year, Jude made his television debut in Magpie Murders, a BritBox and PBS Masterpiece adaptation of the 2016 mystery novel of the same by Anthony Horowitz.

Remember… (about Jude Hill) he’s such a wonderful actor. He’s a wonderful little boy, but he’s an amazing actor. He takes everything you say so to heart, and he gives you everything that he possibly can. We bonded quite heavily on Greek myths and legends so any time I see him we always stop and talk about Poseidon for a bit. — Lynne Davison, Mandrake’s director in The Wee Review

St. Herve, 575 A.D. Welsh bard who was is a popular patron in Brittany, France. Herve, sometimes called Harvey or Hervues, was the son of the bard Hyvarnion, and was born blind. Raised by his uncles because his mother was a hermitess, he was taken to Brittany. There he built an abbey at Lanhourneau, and he was venerated as a miracle worker and bard. He is invoked against eye trouble, and he is depicted with a wolf. Tales and legends associated Herve with a wolf.

St. Nectan. Hermit and martyr also called Nighton or Nectaran. Possibly a native of Wales or Ireland, he is best known through legends. He lived as a hermit in Devonshire, England, founding churches there and in Cornwall, England. The patron saint of Hartland, Devonshire, he was much venerated during the Middle Ages and his shrine was a popular place for pilgrims until its destruction during the Reformation in the sixteenth century. He was reported beheaded by robbers, and in some traditions was a relative of the chieftain Brychan.
