My personal take on Irken heights and designs! More insight into my process under the cut.

I exagerrated the heights of most Irkens to further pronounce Zim's lackingness- As well as make it make more sense in universe for the Almighty Tallest to single out Zim and Skoodge specifically for being short.

Larb in particular regularly recieves favoritism due to his height, so I made him taller to make it more fitting.

I also gave Spleen hideous veins because I hate you all personally. (There is definitely something wrong with him)

As for Tak I kept her height relatively the same in comparison to Zim which would make her pretty short by typical Irken standards.

I also removed her cross hatched mouth because it just confuses me and I don't really like it.

Tenn is popular amongst the fandom for some reason so I included her since I needed more female Irkens.

Although I took more inspiration from her first appearance than her more prominent role in Megadoomer because she looked too similar to Zim.

And of course there's Zim himself. I made sure he was the shortest- Even moreso than Skoodge because that's hilarious.

Pint isn't a real Invader moreso just an extra Irken I added to showcase traits that other potential candidates weren't able to- Such as the brownish eyes and chubbier build on a female Irken.

I refrained from drawing Sizz-Lorr's hat because I wanted to show off his antennae.

I also changed the logo on his metal sleeve things to have two eyes instead of one- Since the one eye symbol is supposed to be for Invaders only.

As for the Tallest without the suit, I took inspiration from this concept art from The Trial- Which depicts the young Tallest as Irken Elite.

I do think it looks pretty cursed with that awful huge head on that tiny stick body. I made Red TALL, tall enough to be the tallest living Irken (tied with purple) but the height is greatly exagerrated by the suit.

Since I buffed the Irken race so hard size wise JUST to screw over Zim, naturally Dib (who is even smaller) got screwed over even harder

Even More Random IZ facts!

The show itself never reveals where exactly on Earth ZIM and Dib live although the comics confirm it is in the United States. Zoomed out maps used by the Tallest in one episode put it somewhere around the upper Midwest region, either in Michigan or Ohio (some fans theorize it to be Detroit)

In early brainstorming stages the show was originally a more light hearted Mork and Mindy style comedy about an alien misunderstanding human social norms and learning a lesson at the end. Jhonen decided after a sleepless night to go a bit darker by making the alien a hostile invader

The various symbols seen on Irken property in the series have specific meanings. The two eyed symbol is for all of the Irken race and the one eyed one is for Invaders specifically

Jhonen rejected every voice actor who auditioned for GIR because he thought they were “too good”. He ended up giving the role to his friend Rikki Simons who at the time had no voice acting experience

ZIM is responsible for the death of every named Almighty Tallest shown in the series(4)

Dib and Gaz are heavily inspired by Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively, from The X-Files

Almighty Tallests Red and Purple were actually unnamed in the original run of the series. Their names started as nicknames given by the IZ crew and fans and only became canon after the show ended in the script of the unaired episode “The Trial”

Dib has been voted as IZ fans’ favorite character (surprisingly not GIR) and is Jhonen’s personal favorite

Had the series not been cancelled, TAK would eventually come back to Earth and become ZIM’s reoccurring archenemy

It is unknown if the Almighty Tallest are naturally tall or if their suits are just robot shells that they pilot inside their torsos. Jhonen has not given a definitive answer on purpose to keep fans guessing

Enter the Florpus was supposed to end in a cliffhanger, with TAK breaking out of Moo-Ping 10 (space prison), setting the series up for a potential sequel

The Control Brains are the true authority figures of the Irken Empire, with the Tallests only being figureheads. They are actually Irkens that are genetically-engineered to not require bodies

The episode “Lice” was originally called “Lice Nazi”. Nickelodeon obviously did not approve.

Minimoose is canonically genderless and uses they/them pronouns

There is no 100% definitive answer for why Invader ZIM was cancelled by Nickelodeon and even Jhonen himself does not know the exact reason. The most plausible theory is that the ratings it pulled in did not justify its enormous animation expenses.

Zib’s single cracked/chipped lens is the most subtle change in his appearance from the Dib we already know and enjoy and yet I’m obsessed I’m so obsessed with it over anything else about his design you have no idea there’s SO much to be symbolically said about it

+ the use of glasses in media very often being a way to indicate a character with exceptional intelligence and insight and how Zib having damaged spectacles could be a hint to how this trait of his has been altered or corrupted

+ broken glass in general as a literary metaphor for transformation, the casting off of limitations, or the loss of innocence

+ “seeing through a broken lens” literally being an idiom for someone having a distorted and false perception of their world

+ Dib’s spectacles normally being one of his most defining/consistent features, not just the literal window through which he views others but also the one they see him through. In a destroyed universe, they’re one of the final connections to humanity he has left, degraded.

+ While Zib’s mutations only display how his body has been changed since he conquered his Zim, the unexplained chip possibly serves as a clue that he has also been personally damaged by the events of his past in some way. Irken biology remembers no grave wound, but human imperfections never forget.

Any gesture that uses just the first 2 fingers is vulgar to Irkens. Zim was very confused by humans doing peace signs for photos or using finger quotes when talking

Doing this sign from the forehead means the Irken military in particular bc of the forehead symbol the elite soldiers have

Editing to add: Irkens would be APALLED to see any of these gestures used- Zim has just been on earth long enough that he doesn't care anymore lmao if he does this in other Irkens' presence they would smack his hand down so fast AND ALSO Zim isn't wearing any gloves?? This makes the gesture even worse!

TAK'S SPACESHIP

design note under the cut

i went for a more jury-rigged look to reflect that the ship was built by tak herself out of nothing but aftermarket parts and scrap. the big tube on the top left of the vehicle is also meant to call to mind tak's psychic forehead implant!

i also thought it'd be fun to put a smudged out irken empire insignia under tak's custom insignia, to suggest she initially put a regular emblem there before making her own symbol. she covered it up as an irrational show of her growing individuality
