Last night, I watched the movie Origins, based on Isabel Wilkerson’s book Caste. As someone who proudly calls herself a book nerd, lately, I’ve felt more like a book dragon. You know, the kind that hoards books, collecting so many that they sometimes end up in different homes. Here’s the deal, I recently moved and left some of my beloved books behind, including Caste. The thickness of it…

Simultaneously mesmerizing & totally very predictable The book *Caste* is just reemphasizing What I learned as a juvenile rebel Isabel Wilkerson takes ample time To analyze how power’s configured I feel both vindicated & sublime For knowing how my friends are advantaged This book is ǝʞıן a key we have misplaced Explaining why & how we operate Part of me is, by myself, disgraced I now see how I myself compensate This book Caste’s groundbreaking scholarship Will open up our world for improvement #caste #sonnet #bookreview #bookreviewsonnet #fantasticread #isabelwilkerson #isabelwilkersoncaste (at The Geographic Center Of NYC Marker) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMSKsZZhCB2/?igshid=16kh2kizr9eo8

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going. "Many of the people who left the South never exactly sat their children down to tell them these things, tell them what happened and why they left and how they and all this blood kin came to be in this northern city or western suburb or why they speak like melted butter and their children speak like footsteps on pavement, prim and proper or clipped and fast, like the New World itself. Some spoke of specific and certain evils. Some lived in tight-lipped and cheerful denial. Others simply had no desire to relive what they had already left. The facts of their lives unfurled over the generations like an over-wrapped present, a secret told in syllables. Sometimes the migrants dropped puzzle pieces from the past while folding the laundry or stirring the corn bread, and the children would listen between cereal commercials and not truly understand until they grew up and had children and troubles of their own. And the ones who had half-listened would scold and kick themselves that they had not paid better attention when they had the chance." #thewarmthofothersuns #IsabelWilkerson https://www.instagram.com/p/CI40kdJAPFR/?igshid=1xymmgrjlff7z

𝔹𝕠𝕠𝕜 ℝ𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕕𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 Do you enjoy nonfiction? Are you reading any titles for nonfiction November? Caste by @isabelwilkerson is a must read for anyone looking to better understand systemic racism implicit in the power heirarchies of the United States “As we go about our daily lives, caste is the wordless usher in a darkened theater, flashlight cast down in the aisles, guiding us to our assigned seats for a performance. The hierarchy of caste is not about feelings or morality. It is about power—which groups have it and which do not.” SYNOPSIS In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings.   Beyond race, class, or other factors, there is a powerful caste system that influences people’s lives and behavior and the nation’s fate. Linking the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations, including divine will, bloodlines, stigma, and more. Using riveting stories about people—including Martin Luther King, Jr., baseball’s Satchel Paige, a single father and his toddler son, Wilkerson herself, and many others—she shows the ways that the insidious undertow of caste is experienced every day. She documents how the Nazis studied the racial systems in America to plan their out-cast of the Jews; she discusses why the cruel logic of caste requires that there be a bottom rung for those in the middle to measure themselves against; she writes about the surprising health costs of caste, in depression and life expectancy, and the effects of this hierarchy on our culture and politics. Finally, she points forward to ways America can move beyond the artificial and destructive separations of human divisions, toward hope in our common humanity. #nonfictionbooks #caste #isabelwilkerson #nonfictionnovember #bookrecommendations #bookrecommendation #bookstagrammer #booksragram https://www.instagram.com/p/CHjcGrrgIlf/?igshid=1vxid7ximri0g

Where There is No Caste: UTOPIA In this article, I have reviewed Isabel Wilkerson’s “Caste: The Lies That Divide Us”. In my review, I have argued that Wilkerson has enabled a debate on what constitutes caste in our human society. And I have substantiated the argument by expanding the caste framework to the modern capitalist system and the hierarchical structures that we have created in human societies.
