Day 4: Trapped
You know, I always thought the world of OFF was post-apocalyptic and Hugo was left alone because his real parents died and he never had a chance to meet them again
Kinda sad.

Wanted to draw some TSWFBY again and decided to be a little self indulgent and crossover with my integrity soul Flo because. imagining them interacting with Blue is certainly a contrast HAHAHFGJKH Though as an older sibling they'd immediately get attached. Two integrity souls who couldn't be more different. Blue would see right through them immediately.
While doodling I realized Yellow and Flo have surprising similarities in more ways than one. Intimidating older siblings who have dust on their hands dying due to some sort of blast for self-sacrificial reasons of sorts and coming back to life with half of their face scarred/burnt leaving one of their eyes blinded? okay. oh my god
I always struggle drawing Blue I feel but this time I think I figured her out. She's small and poofy and I love her very much,, Yellow's shapes are fun
TSWFBY belongs to @passion-rising !! Sorry for @-ing you and drawing fanart again LOL they were rotating in my brain for the past few hours

In flatland, are the irregular shapes a metaphor for disability or being lgbtqia+? Or intersex? Or all of them?
I only ask because the narrative seems to draw inspiration from both. Gender in Flatland is determined by whether or not you're a shape or a line segment. The lower classes of triangles are irregular, and they are dehumanised (deconfigured?) To the point that they are considered to have smaller brains by the narrative based on angle size. I personally think that due to flatland's satire, and hints throughout the text, A square is an unreliable and biased narrator who is indoctrinated fully in the society of flatland. So what he says about the angle of triangles, and the smartness of women, shouldn't necessarily be taken for granted. I would be interested to know if the part about the triangles is a reference to phrenology and how stupid it is, but I digress.
Irregular flatlanders are reconfigured at birth. This suggests it's considered a disability, however, the irregularity doesn't seem to be disabling. In fact, the only effect it has on the person is that it makes their class impossible to determine - something which would have social effects. We also only see evidence of male children being born irregular, which is a common stereotype of autism, and the coupling with 'social detriments' being the result of irregularity, it could lead to this conclusion. However, I doubt that Abbot was commenting on this in 1884, though that doesn't prevent modern readers from taking it in this direction. I just think that he wouldn't have written 'reconfiguration' into the story, a deadly process of creating "regular" children if it was a metaphore for disability - it was often a lot more common after all to hide disabled folk away. Although, if any historians out there know about parallels in victorian society, I'd be really interested.
I'm most convinced by my reading that Abbott was talking about intersex children when writing about reconfiguration. Most of Flatland is a social commentary after all - following the wrongs of victorian society on how classes are treated, with a larger focus on women. Now, with sight recognition in flatland, women are mistaken for squares from certain angles, and sometimes for circles. Imagine if you will, an irregular semicircle - a male who would often be mistaken for a woman. Considering the sexism Abbott talks about in this world, I think that irregularity being a metaphor for being intersex is plausible. Especially since the children are reconfigured at a very young age.
When I first read the book, I read irregularity as a disability and nothing more. But now I'm thinking about it more, I really would love to know other's opinions. The book is old, and I'm not sure if my thoughts are plausible - but then again, it seems implausible that the book is mocking the sexism in victorian society. Yet it does - lots of evidence points to Abbott being a protofeminist writer. It's not a stretch to me that he might hold a stance against the mutilation of intersex children. Or perhaps a stance against conversion therapy. Let me know I guess :)

General Thoughts on Buried Secrets (Hello Neighbor)
Not sure if I'd classify this as a rant post or not. Spoilers ahead, obviously.
If some of my points don't make sense, we can discuss it in the comments. It's 1AM by the time I'm writing this post, so forgive me if the text feels all slammered and not cohesive.
Took me a decade to finish it, but the secrets were unburied (like Jay would say).
And holy crap, I have pretty strong feelings about this book.
Okay, it's not that bad, but comparing to the previous two... it felt flat. I don't know how the explain it in more cohesive terms, but it didn't hit the same way the previous two did.
First, I like the ending. Though it ended on a pretty sad note, this is exactly what the Nicky trilogy (it feels surreal to actually type that) was leading up to.
The very prologue of Missing Pieces is a warning for Nicky to stop wandering, else he'd not make home some day. Nicky's character in general is centered around that: wandering.
"Oh, but what happened after he got kidnapped? What about Nicky's friends? How did he escape?"
Questions like this come from a misunderstanding. The books aren't meant to be your introduction to the lore. They're meant to be an additional piece of information, for those that were curious about the world of Hello Neighbor and wanted to know more about the past.
The true story is told in the games. Make no mistake—Hello Neighbor is a gaming franchise. The story originates from the games.
The ending of Buried Secrets is one-to-one with Act 1 for a reason. You're meant to read these books with the knowledge from the games. So that when you read the trilogy, you went: "Oh, so that's how it happened."
At least, this should be in theory. The sad reality is that games just fucking suck in storytelling and gameplay, to the point where the actual plot is shoved aside for other matters. That's why, in most cases for fans, the books act as an introduction to the story of the games, instead of how it should be in the other way around.
This is why Buried Secrets ends in this cliffhanger way. It's a prequel of the games, but it isn't meant to be an introduction. It's meant to be an additional explanation. You can blame the games' lack of quality for this.
Anyway, I liked the ending because it tied up Nicky's wandering arc in a pretty neat way.
... And that's it. That's literally the only thing that I like about this book. Everything else feels forced just to reach this specific ending.
I'm not sure if Carly was forced to make this a trilogy, but either way this definitely harmed the pacing and plot. Every character is written in a specific way that feels a little unrealistic based on the previous books.
See, Nicky is supposed to break into Peterson's house alone, without the help of his friends. Their method of justifying this is by having literally everyone in town suspecting that Nicky was the one behind the weird activities. No matter how illogical that seems.
My biggest complaint is Maritza.
Like, I won't lie that she isn't reasonable at first glance. Maritza is tired of fighting. She wants to move on. She thinks Nicky is changing for worse because of his obsession with the case. This is all understandable.
The problem is, instead of trying to convince him to move on, she would rather believe he did all of this to frame Peterson specifically? Despite knowing what Theodore's capable of, she'd rather believe that her closest friend would lie to everyone just to convince them of something they were already certain (that Theodore is fucking dangerous)?
I get they tried to apologize to Nicky by the end of the book, but it's too little and too late. Yeah, Peterson framed Nicky in an ill-timing, but would Nicky's only friends believe he'd actually do all of this ALONE?
It just doesn't feel natural.
The beginning and middle part of the book is literally Nicky getting kicked around like an abused puppy and being lonely again. The latter chapters, as well as Jay and Lu, kinda hard carries the entire book. Earthpro is not as interesting as it was in Waking Nightmare. And Buried Secrets tries really hard to get you to hate Trinity and Maritza with the "we are changing clubs" thing.
Overall, I wouldn't say It's a bad book, but definitely the weakest and most surreal among the three.

The Cipher family
This is an art piece I made for my take of the Relativity Falls AU. So here is the Cipher family!
And here's some info below~~~
Steve Pyramid/Cipher:
- He was adopted by Scalene and Euclid Cipher when he was really young due to the fact that they couldn't have kids.
- 20 years old.
- Still lives with their parents.
- His bubbly personality may make him appear naive to others but don't get fooled, he isn't.
- Agnostic.
- Has anxiety, masks it behind crappy jokes.
- Likes to bother others for fun.
- Used to babysit Manly Dan, now that he's 16 they hang out.
- Mostly hangs out with Dan and his friend group, he's like that one cool older cousin to them.
- Studied really hard to get good grades to prove that his adopted parents did a good job raising him.
- Had a burn out but managed to end highschool with good grades.
- Takes two years off of studies, promising his parents he's gonna focus on searching for a good university on his second year off.
- Doesn't really wanna get into a university, he just wants to travel the world in a van and get a dog.
- Hides his eye to be supportive to Bill.
- Is an artist but parents don't think the profession will get him money.
- Shitty fashion taste, dresses himself.
Bill (William) Cipher:
- Bill and Steve's parents don't know how Bill managed to exist. Neither did the doctors. Nor does Bill himself. Two things he knows is that he KNOWS the process of how his mom somehow got pregnant with him, and that he HATES it here.
- Is 12 years old.
- Is a miracle baby.
- Has slightly sharper teeth.
- Has anophthalmia, hides his missing eye behind his hair and says to others it's because of style.
- Shitty vision but refuses to wear glasses.
- He is falsely diagnosed with schizophrenia because when he was little he would "see things" (it's Gravity Falls, so ofc he was seeing things).
- Atheist (he says that the only god in his life is himself).
- Takes medicine for anophalmia and schizophrenia.
- The medicines make him feel out of it and not really there, and also tired all the time.
- Masks it behind a cheeky smile and a cocky behavior.
- Has ADHD but the signs are not very prominent because of the side effects of the medicines (one day he's gonna go off the schizophrenia pills. That will be when his ADHD symptoms make a much more prominent appearance. When he gets diagnosed he will be prescribed with even more medicines which he will rarely take because after years of medicine he's gotten sick of them. Until then, he's supposedly schizophrenic).
- His best friend is Pyronica.
- Mostly hangs out with Stan and Pyronica, sometimes Ford and Fidds might tag along too.
- Hates Stan, he only sticks around because Pyronica finds him cool.
- Has a crush on Ford.
- Hates Fiddleford because he also has a crush on Ford.
- Likes making their Grunkle Dipper angry for no reason.
- Mama's boy, but sometimes her clinginess can become irrigating and overwhelming.
- Good at math.
- Wants to become a CEO of a big business to start his plan for world domination.
- Is smarter than he looks.
- Likes to creep up on people.
- Likes silly straws.
- Is into astrology.
- Likes alt fashion.
- Good fashion taste, his mom still dresses him.
Euclid Cipher:
- Works as an accountant at the GF bank.
- 50 years old.
- Catholic.
- Loves his sons.
- Wants Steve to get into a good university and become a teacher or an accountant, he doesn't think art is gonna get him anywhere.
- Believes Pyronica is a bad influence for Bill but when he tried to get him away from her he kept sneaking out at night to get to her.
- His top hat was given to him by his late father which is why he wears it on all times.
- Comes from a wealthy family (not rich, but they're quite comfortable despite being four people in the house).
- Thinks Bill's fascination with stars is ridiculous but he keeps his mouth shut.
- Expects a lot from his healthy son, expects less from his ill son (both kids know that).
- Thinks Mason Pines and his nephews shouldn't be allowed near his son (he knows Bill is gonna disobey him anyway).
Scalene Cipher:
- Owns a small hair salon.
- 46 years old.
- Catholic.
- Loves her sons.
- Boy mom.
- Overprotective over Bill.
- The bow on her hair was the first thing Euclid had given her when they first started dating, she's been wearing it ever since to prove her love for him.
- She calls Bill her "little miracle baby", "blessing from the Lord" and sometimes even her "first love" (ew) because she didn't think it was possible for her to give birth.
- Was rather saddened at Bill's eye deformity and even more at his "schizophrenia diagnosis".
- Told Bill to hide his missing eye so people wouldn't judge.
- Is good friends with Fiddleford's mom, kinda ironic though.
- Thinks Bill's world domination plans are cute.
- Picks out Bill's clothes still, Euclid tells her he's old enough to dress himself, she doesn't listen.
- Goes to church every Sunday.
- Thinks Bill and Pyronica are dating.
The Cipher family, although seemingly perfect, is quite dysfunctional. At dinner time their parents would be mostly focused on Steve and his academic education. Bill could have said he almost died that day and they would hardly notice. They go to church every Sunday.
Even though they're supposed to replace Candy's family (yes, ik we never see them in the show), they're kinda more Northwest family codded (mostly because there's not gonna be a Northwest family in my AU, so I took liberty with our limited information on Euclid and Scalene.
(btw this is them in Gacha, I'm only dropping this here is because you can see all of his outfit)
