We talked about having a plotline take place in a fancy event at some point (potentially: at Docfather's casino)(which probably is invite only, so Ariana and Pearl Moon as a reporter were invited ;3), and then I blacked out and this appeared on my screen,

there's something about the way people talk about john gaius (incl the way the author writes him) that is like. so absent of any connection to te ao māori that it's really discomforting. like even in posts that acknowledge him as not being white, they still talk about him like a white, american leftist guy in a way that makes it clear people just AREN'T perceiving him as a māori man from aotearoa.

and it's just really serves to hammer home how powerful and pervasive whiteness and american hegemony is. because TLT is probably the single most Kiwi series in years to explode on the global stage, and all the things i find fraught about it as a pākehā woman reading a series by a pākehā author are illegible to a greater fandom of americans discoursing about whether or not memes are a valid way of portraying queer love.

idk the part of my brain that lights up every time i see a capital Z printed somewhere because of the New Zealand Mentioned??? instinct will always be proud of these books and muir. but i find myself caught in this midpoint of excitement and validation over my culture finding a place on the global stage, frustration at how kiwi humour and means of conveying emotion is misinterpreted or declared facile by an international audience, frustrated also by how that international audience runs the characters in this book through a filter of american whiteness before it bothers to interpret them, and ESPECIALLY frustrated by how muir has done a pretty middling job of portraying te ao māori and the māoriness of her characters, but tht conversation doesn't circulate in the same way* because a big part of the audience doesn't even realise the conversation is there to be had.

which is not to say that muir has done a huge glaring racism that non-kiwis haven't noticed or anything, but rather that there are very definitely things that she has done well, things that she has done poorly, things that she didn't think about in the first book that she has tacked on or expanded upon in the later books, that are all worthy of discussion and critique that can't happen when the popular posts that float past my dash are about how this indigenous man is 'guy who won't shut up about having gone to oxford'

*to be clear here, i'm not saying these conversations have never happened, just that in terms of like, ambient posts that float round my very dykey dash, the discussions and meta that circulate on this the lesbian social media, are overwhelmingly stripped of any connection to aotearoa in general, let alone te ao māori in specific. and because of the nature of american internet hegemony this just,,,isn't noticed, because how does a fish know it's in the ocean u know? i have seen discussions along these lines come up, and it's there if i specifically go looking for it, but it's not present in the bulk of tlt content that has its own circulatory life and i jut find that grim and a part of why the fandom is difficult to engage with.

how do you plan ZoS? like do you do a timeline of events you want to happen in between canon? asking as a reader and writer :3

I have a loose outline of the entire story in my head, and we're basically (slowly) working our way through it all right now haha.

There are certain scenes/events that I have clear images of, and definitely intend to include as I continue writing. Others are a little more vague. Some get changed or expanded upon as we stumble across it, but it doesn't change the overarching plotline.

... This probably isn't the most effective way to write, but I find that it works fairly well for me lol.

#QA #zenith of stars #it's kind of a vague answer isn't it #tldr: there's a general outline that remains unchanged #various events are set in stone #but there's also room for change in smaller events and character byplay #occasionally things are shuffled around #for example #araya was originally supposed to be introduced when shiki was a first year in the initial notes!#but i thought about it some more while writing and changed my mind for various reasons #plus running into him earlier adds more 'oomph' to the whole “villain lurking in the background since before you knew there was a villain”#also jihei #rip jihei

#Biggest take away from the episode: @fandom Dazai can't be Atsushi's father figure if he himself says Atsushi's father figure is the–#headmaster check your facts #Second biggest take away from the episode: the worst thing the headmaster transmitted Atsushi ought to be the terrible haircut choices #Mmmmhhh I could spend another whole tag rant to talk about how much I dislike the writing of Lucy in this episode 😭😭😭#But I worry I'll start being perceived as someone who hates women if I do so I won't.#(But let me just say. I really really *really* despite the “what women [alien and mysterious beings] want is hard to understand and–#impossible to decipher and more often than not they will say the exact opposite of what they mean” stereotype.#Like I hate it to an intimate extent.)#I quite like Kyouka's backstory!! I feel like she's the most fleshed out female character with a compelling character arc and personality.#I really like her. Lucy and Atsushi working as make-do parents (very largerly intended. More like siblings who are dating but that sounds–#even worse) was very cute. And I appreciate how the events seemed to set off Atsushi's own reflection on parenthood.#The same doesn't happen in the manga since the chapters are placed in a different order.#Overall this is just an episode that when I was reading the manga for the first time solidified my understanding that me and b/sd have #RADICALLY different views on the world. But now that after three years and having long come to terms with it.#I suppose it's just something that's there.#Ususal notes about the animation just for talks. The lack of budget really shows this episode and in the second half in particular.#It's especially noticeable in backgrounds that are just... Not the stunning backgrounds that usually make b/sd's anime strong point.#So in turn the lack of details comes off as twice as evident as it normally would :/#The whole Atsushi / Tanizaki exchange at the start of the chapter until the headmaster's identity is revealed is completely devoid–#of host which has me just?? What happened here??? A track slowly building up tension is an almost automatic choice I'm just like.#What happened. If it was a deliberate choice it was a very bad one in my humble opinion #On a more positive note I really like whoever drew the characters “background appearence” this episode eheh #(you know‚ the more stylized one when they're not on close up)#And the drawings at the end of the episode daz/atsu twilight scene were good. speaking of post-married to money fics (glances at mine) i had a false start on the next chapter (where i accidentally broke the fic's internal rule of sticking to one of 4 povs per chapter by accidentally writing in pearl's perspective instead of, like, any of the three viable perspectives) so that might eventually pop up as a oneshot as a companion piece when the actual chapter it was gonna be is done. however i am now looking at my outline and my drafts and considering switching two chapters and writing that instead of the one that was originally planned. lol.

#how ive been handing perspectives in cawnl is a funny story #it was originally supposed to be frenchie narrating the whole thing and follow the events like an episode #but the narration for the prologue became too reflective of krabs' thoughts #so i thought well okay maybe the prologue is krabs' perspective and then the rest is in planktons perspective?#but then i thought really hard about it and decided i wanted to follow karens perspective periodically too #didnt want her to just have her plot happening in the background with very little insight and with very little agency?#but if i was gonna have three perspectives... why leave sandy out if shes also so important to this plot?#THUS. the four perspectives rule.#it has to be one of those four and only one of those four #and i CANNOT change perspective in the middle of the chapter #mostly because i prefer when perspectives are contextually consistent within a chapter so i wouldnt like it anyway #thus the accidental pearl perspective cannot be allowed to be in the main fic tragic to say

Beyond the initial keith/lance queerbaiting I think one of the worst lessons I had to un-learn from voltron a lot later is that there is no shiro, there are no space lions, there's no one coming to save you from any of it and if you choose to rot in the desert, for instance. Well you'll die.
