Bueno, damas y caballeros, nunca creí que fuera a decir esto tan cerquita de acabar 2019, pero gracias a todo vuestro apoyo y cariño he conseguido llegar a los 1K. SECCIÓN II: EL ORIGEN DE LA AGENCIA DE DETECTIVES. LA HISTORIA NO CONTADA.

N/T: La traductora de la novela (JP-ENG) dijo que no terminó de traducir lo que seguía para que los fans interesados en conocer el final, compraran el trabajo de Kafka Asagiri. No obstante, dejó un resumen de lo que pasaba después.

«Ranpo se fue a la estación de policía con un oficial llamado Mitamura. Fukuzawa encontró su propia tarjeta de contacto (la que le dio a Ranpo en la casa de té) con algo escrito atrás (la letra de Ranpo es muy fea) que decía: Mitamura es el verdadero culpable, ¡y ve por el bastón del caballero!

El caballero en el que Fukuzawa se fijó antes era el objetivo original. Murakami era parte del equipo que iba tras el caballero, junto con el escritor del guion de teatro; no obstante, Murakami no sabía que lo iban a asesinar. Él era la distracción, porque planeaban culpar al caballero del crimen para poder ser arrestado por Mitamura, y, así, terminar secuestrándolo, pero como Ranpo arruinó el plan y se presentó como un detective usuario de Habilidades Especiales, Mitamura lo secuestró a él en su lugar.

Mitamura resultó ser parte de la organización llamada «V», la que mandó la amenaza al teatro. Su misión era erradicar a los usuarios de Habilidades Especiales de Yokohama, incluso si eso significaba trabajar con dichos usuarios para lograrlo, y el caballero era uno de esos usuarios, uno muy difícil de atrapar, y al que planeaban utilizar también.

Fukuzawa fue por el bastón del caballero y encontró que tenía algo dentro, un dispositivo.»

Lo que sigue de eso sí está traducido.

El lugar hacia el que Fukuzawa se dirigía a toda prisa, eran las celdas de confinamiento subterráneo de la policía. Se localizaba en un edificio de una sola planta junto a la estación de policía.

Saludó a los guardias, a quienes ya había informado de su visita, y bajó la larga escalera que daba al subterráneo.

A diferencia de las celdas utilizadas para confinar a los sospechosos de manera temporal, esta instalación había sido construida con el propósito principal de evitar que los delincuentes capturados escaparan. Las puertas eran de doble capa y estaban hechas de un acero muy denso, no había ventanas en las celdas y las paredes estaban reforzadas con marcos de metal reforzado.

Allí había alguien a quien quería ver.

—¿Estás despierto?

Dentro de la habitación de concreto, cierto hombre, quien llevaba ropa de confinamiento reforzada una capa de cadenas, levantó la cabeza en silencio. Sus ojos, de color marrón rojizo, eran insondables y estaban desprovistos de toda emoción.

Fukuzawa examinó su expresión a través de la pequeña ventana de observación.

Se trataba del asesino que había disparado al secretario de la presidenta.

El joven hombre miró a Fukuzawa y ni siquiera se inmutó al reconocerlo.

—¿Qué tal la celda de confinamiento?

—No es tan mala como parece. El aire acondicionado funciona bien.

Incluso para Fukuzawa, que se había enfrentado a muchos villanos y criminales, esos ojos le producían cierto escalofrío. La mayoría de los asesinos experimentados contra los que había peleado tenían ojos fríos, carentes de compasión, que veían a los seres humanos como gusanos, pero los ojos de ese joven eran diferentes. No eran fríos, eran ojos vacíos donde el calor y la frialdad no existían. Eran los ojos de alguien que ni siquiera sentía odio, malicia o la alegría de matar, y mucho menos los de alguien que pudiera sentir compasión o bondad. Eran los ojos de alguien que había perdido la esperanza y la desesperación. Eran los ojos de una persona carente de todas las emociones que trae la vida.

Fukuzawa se quedó pensando por un rato. Era probable que ese joven no hubiera experimentado, a diferencia de él en el pasado, el placer de matar. Probablemente, él mataba porque no había otra cosa que pudiera hacer.

—Vine aquí porque quería preguntarte algo —dijo Fukuzawa mientras lo observaba a través de la ventana—. Mira esto.

Fukuzawa mostró un dispositivo utilizado para grabar, una memoria en forma de cilindro, que había estado dentro del bastón del caballero. Los ojos del joven asesino analizaron el dispositivo.

—Es un dispositivo de almacenamiento utilizado por cierta organización nacional. Se necesita un aparato específico para leer eso, por lo que sería en extremo difícil sacar la información que contiene. Esto lo usa alguien que, mientras se encuentra bajo la protección del Programa de Protección de Testigos, se muestra invisible ante el mundo para intercambiar información con la organización que le facilitó del artefacto. En otras palabras, esto pertenece a una persona importante que, a su vez, es objetivo de una organización criminal. Y ese tipo de personas importantes tienen un rasgo en común: todos son usuarios de Habilidades Especiales.

Fukuzawa observó al asesino, y la mirada de éste no vaciló.

—Entonces vamos con mi pregunta principal. Alguien tan hábil como usted, que ha recibido solicitudes y ha trabajado para diferentes organizaciones externas. Recientemente, ¿ha recibido alguna solicitud para capturar un usuario con Habilidades Especiales?

El joven no respondió.

—¿Y bien?

—...No puedo decir nada sobre mis clientes —contestó con una voz ronca.

—Está bien. —Por más que lo intentara, ya sabía cómo trabajaba ese hombre, y no le diría una sola palabra aún si lo sometiera a la tortura—. ¿Has escuchado algo en los alrededores acerca de encontrar a alguien que pueda capturar a un usuario de Habilidades Especiales vivo? Además de gozar de la protección de su organización, esta persona es muy esquiva, un objetivo difícil. Quieren encontrarlo y capturarlo vivo. Es un trabajo con una recompensa extraordinaria de un cliente que se está ocultando. Se dice que el cliente usa el alias de «Ángel» o «V».

En el instante en el que escuchó la palabra «V», los hombros del asesino se tensaron.

«Debe saber algo.» Así lo interpretó Fukuzawa.

El gobierno no admite de manera pública la existencia de usuarios con Habilidades Especiales, pero ellos mismos protegen en secreto a algunos. El caballero del teatro era, con alta probabilidad, uno de esos usuarios.

Incluso en Yokohama, éstas personas eran muy importantes; seguido eran atacadas tanto por ejércitos externos como por organizaciones criminales internas. No estaba claro por qué son atacados, pero se dice que conocen los secretos que rodean la fundación del país.

Con un usuario como objetivo, incluso si todos los villanos formaran un grupo criminal con la meta de encontrarlo, no podrían hallar ni una sola huella; y si lo hicieran, se requería que un asesino de alto calibre rompiera las medidas de seguridad de la Organización de Protección.

En este caso, «V» no se había ensuciado las manos. Definitivamente estaba utilizado a alguien fuera de su organización; si ese era el caso, entonces parte de la información del trabajo habría llegado a los oídos dicho experto asesino.

—...No quiero hablar de ellos —dijo, al fin, el sicario. Su voz era sin duda la de alguien joven, pero su tono era el de un anciano marchito sin emociones—. ¿Conoces sus objetivos?

—No. —Todo lo que sabía era que habían ideado un crimen a gran escala y habían involucrado a un teatro para secuestrar al caballero, resultando en la captura de Ranpo.

—Es por la Gran Justicia —dijo el joven asesino—. Matar por dinero, matar por odio, matar por venganza; entiendo eso, pero ellos matan por justicia. No quiero involucrarme con ese tipo de personas. Si piensas con cuidado sobre la idea de matar por una causa justa, a la larga, terminarás pensando en que está bien matar a cualquiera.

Esas últimas palabras perturbaron cada rincón de la mente de Fukuzawa, hasta el punto en el que casi emitió un quejido ronco.

—No te estoy pidiendo que te enfrentes a ellos —dijo Fukuzawa, fingiendo una voz tranquila—, pero mi… socio fue secuestrado por esa organización. ¿Tienes alguna idea de dónde confinan a la gente que atrapan?

Los ojos del asesino se fijaron en Fukuzawa.

—...No tengo razones para decírtelo.

—Cierto. —Asintió—. Pero si me lo dices, puedo testificar que el asesinato del secretario fue un accidente que resultó de una pelea. Con eso, probablemente serías liberado mañana.

Los ojos del joven vacilaron con un ligero toque de emoción. Quizá se había sorprendido.

—¿Lo dices en serio?

Fukuzawa asintió.

—Eso es inesperado. —El joven negó con la cabeza—. Por lo que vi antes, no parecías ser el tipo de persona que haría un trato que fuera en contra de lo que es correcto.

Fukuzawa también estaba sorprendido de sí mismo. Nunca antes se había involucrado en un asunto que requiriese de establecer un negocio en contra de su sentido de la justicia. Lo más seguro es que se arrepintiera de eso más tarde, mañana, o en algún momento; pero ahora no estaba en posición de dudar. Tenía que recuperar a Ranpo, porque él era... un idiota. Un niño con una terrible falta de conocimiento sobre el mundo, que no consideraba las consecuencias de sus acciones, que no pensaba lo suficiente. Hasta el punto en el que se usó a sí mismo como carnada para atrapar a la mente maestra tras el incidente del teatro.

Camino al subterráneo, Fukuzawa se había dado cuenta de eso. Para atrapar al enemigo, Ranpo se dejó secuestrar con la intención de que Fukuzawa lo rescatara. Para Ranpo, podría tratarse de un plan perfecto sin grietas. Quizá esa era la única manera de sacar al cerebro intelectual que nunca se mostraría ante nadie; y si esa era la forma en la que pensaba... Entonces se había involucrado con un niño demasiado idiota.

Si Fukuzawa no iba tras Ranpo, o si él y sus habilidades eran peores que las del enemigo, Ranpo sería asesinado. No parecían ser una asociación misericordiosa que deja vivas a las personas que saben la verdad.

La idea que había sido ingeniosa para Ranpo, no estaba siendo en absoluto ingeniosa para Fukuzawa. Fue un movimiento en extremo estúpido. ¿Sería producto de su juventud? Era casi como nadar en un pantano en pleno invierno.

Pero era justo por eso que no podía abandonarlo.

—¿Y bien? ¿Tenemos un trato?

Después de mirar a Fukuzawa por un momento, el joven asesino habló.

—Esta instalación es bastante cómoda —dijo mientras miraba a su alrededor—. Si quisiera escapar, podría hacerlo solo en cualquier momento. Así que es un trato injusto.

Escapar de ese lugar sin un pequeño ejército bien equipado, sería imposible; sin embargo, la intuición de Fukuzawa le dijo que el joven no estaba mintiendo.

—Entonces, ¿qué sería un trato justo para ti?

El joven miró al suelo, silencioso e inmóvil. Después de unos segundos de mutismo, abrió la boca.

—He estado trabajando como asesino a sueldo todo este tiempo. Siempre he estado por mi cuenta. Nunca he pensado en tener colegas o jefes. Pero, para que un experto en artes marciales, como tú, llegue al borde de sus principios para intentar salvar a alguien... Puedo decir que ese subordinado tuyo es afortunado. Tengo algo de envidia.

Fukuzawa estuvo a punto de decir que era un malentendido. Ranpo no era su subordinado. Fukuzawa ni siquiera era adecuado para ser un jefe. De hecho, así como el asesino, fue alguien que vivió evitando las organizaciones.

—¿De verdad? —Las palabras que salieron de su boca no eran ni por asomo las que quería decir.

El joven asintió en silencio.

—He oído hablar de varios edificios que utilizan para hacer tratos. Puedes probar estos lugares, comenzando por el más cercano a donde fue secuestrado tu subordinado.

Fukuzawa trazó un mapa mental de los posibles lugares a los que podría ir, pero antes de poder decir algo, el asesino se adelantó.

—En este lugar me proporcionan cambios de ropa y hay un buen aire acondicionado, pero la comida es terriblemente mala. Escuché que tienes influencia entre los principales oficiales de la policía. ¿Podrías ayudarme a conseguir algo mejor? Ese es el precio.

Fukuzawa entrecerró los ojos, luego habló.

—¿Quieres algo en especial?

Los labios del joven se curvaron de manera ligera en lo que parecía ser una sutil sonrisa. Entonces, respondió.

—Curry.

«Fukuzawa continuó buscando a Ranpo, quien habría sido acribillado si Fukuzawa no hubiese llegado en el momento en que lo hizo. Sus habilidades les permitieron salir vivos a ambos, pero Fukuzawa le propinó una cachetada a Ranpo y lo regañó por poner su propia vida en riesgo dado que aún es un niño. Después de eso, Fukuzawa le revolvió el cabello, como para consolarlo, porque no sabía qué más hacer. A Ranpo se le salieron las lágrimas y le salto encima, sin dejar de llorar y moquear, mientras le repetía una y otra vez que lo sentía mucho.

Así termina el caso. Murakami y el escritor del guion de teatro terminaron siendo puestos bajo custodia, pero alguien los asesinó de la misma forma que a Murakami, por lo que se presume que fue alguien de la organización V quien lo hizo. A la mañana siguiente, el asesinato de Murakami salió en el periódico y la policía se encargó de que nada más saliera a la luz.

Después de eso, Ranpo se volvió muy unido a Fukuzawa; pero, de verdad, muy, muy unido. Fukuzawa no tuvo la frialdad suficiente para hacer que se fuera, así que lo contrató para que le hiciera los mandados, prácticamente, a cambio de recibir comida, ropa, un techo y educación.

Con las deducciones de Ranpo, los clientes pudieron prevenir cualquier daño del que debían ser protegidos, por lo que Fukuzawa casi pierde su trabajo como guardaespaldas. Sin embargo, a Ranpo comenzaron a llegarle solicitudes por sus habilidades como detective, y como Fukuzawa era la única persona a quien Ranpo escuchaba, los clientes ofrecían el doble de dinero para que estuviera con él y lo mantuviera bajo control.

Así, pasó un año y se volvieron famosos bajo el nombre de “El dúo invencible”. Entonces a Fukuzawa le surgió la idea de una Agencia Armada de Detectives.»

Ahora, ¿han leído la novela de la Era Oscura (Dark Era)? Ahí explican (al igual que en el anime y el manga) que se necesita un permiso especial para que un usuario con Habilidades Especiales pueda trabajar haciendo uso de dichas habilidades. Como Ranpo siempre se anunciaba como un usuario, ¿a que no adivinan quién tuvo que ir a conseguir ese permiso para mantener el trabajo? Así es, Fukuzawa.

«Entonces, aquí aparece un hombre, el caballero del teatro, y se revela que se trata de Natsume Souseki (el sujeto que se transforma en gato).

Cuando él y Ranpo se encuentran, Ranpo se da cuenta de que Natsume siempre supo de que planeaban secuestrarlo aquel día en el teatro, y que siguió con el caso de la organización V. Ranpo, también se entera de que su éxito (junto a Fukuzawa) era, en parte, gracias a Natsume, quien le cuenta que lo hizo porque le debía cierto favor al padre de Ranpo.

Es con la ayuda de Natsume que consiguen el permiso para que un usuario de Habilidades Especiales pueda trabajar haciendo uso de sus poderes, no sin antes asegurarse de que Fukuzawa quería crear la Agencia. Fukuzawa mostró determinación con la idea puesto que quería seguir peleando a favor de la justicia, pero no como lo hacía en el pasado.»
