Because...The World is Round

The following is a sequel to my Whumptober piece ‘Broken Wings’. Likes, Replies and especially Reblogs with constructive criticism is definitely appreciated. 

The song ‘Becasue’ is written by John Lennon with Paul McCartney and owned by Apple Corps. Ltd.

Jake Grayson was created by writer Kyle Higgins and artist Trevor McCrathy. Tim Drake was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Pat Broderick. Both characters are owned by DC Comics, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

With all that said, please enjoy. 

  Letting out an exhausted sigh after nearly thirty minutes on the edge of this rooftop, Robin lays down on his back and taps onto his electronic blue screen on his right arm glove, unlocking its features. After half a minute of searching through the songs downloaded within the pad, he found what was he looking for, a song to listen to while both the traffic in the streets below and the low elevated clouds in the nighttime sky above passed by. One quick tap on the song’s play button and next thing, the gentle opening strumming of the electric guitar starts flowing straight into his earpiece. With that, Robin puts his arm to the side and stares up to the clouds above. 

  It had been almost a week since checking out of Bludhaven General and only since yesterday that he was capable wearing the red tunic once again. But the scars were still deep in one way or another for this Flying Grayson. Every now and then, whenever he extends and strains himself in a flip, reaching to grab something or whatever of the sort, a minimal yet all too noticeable pain erupts on his abdomen. The spot where Zsasz’s knife ended up plunged into in the final phase of their duel before his freed family stepped in.  However as bothersome as the phantom pains can be, they pale in quite the comparison to another far more persistent pain within 10 year old Jake Grayson’s young mind. 

 It was the pain of failure. 

 In his case in regarding facing Zsasz, he was very, very lucky to survive at all. Sadly,this was not the case at all for those poor children, some of them being his age, found in that homeless shelter. His failure was being unable in saving their lives. 

 ‘Why couldn’t I get to those other guys in time’, ponders the Boy Wonder as his earbuds start exuding harmonic vocals to the lyrics in his song playing. ‘Why couldn’t I save them?’ 

  These were two questions that kept appearing in his psyche at least once or twice every single day ever since he was first checked in the hospital. It was not without good reason that he wouldn’t just stop thinking about it. He probably shouldn’t. He’s a crime-fighter after all and they take oaths. Oaths to uphold truth, peace, security, a just rule of law and above all else humility and a promise for a better tomorrow for the citizens and civilians they protect every day and night. He could’ve gave all that for those kids, but he failed. He could’ve ensured they live happy, long lives with new parents to call their own, but he failed. He could’ve upheld his oath to ensure the promise of a better tomorrow for those children, victims of a cruel, heartless, merciless monster of human being and his blades....

  “....I failed”, whispered Robin sadly, a single tear rolling down his mask while staring up to the passing clouds in the Bludhaven night skies. The harmonic singing in his earpiece now sound off the lyrics.

Because...The world is round, it turns me on.

  Robin breathes out softly as the harmonic lyrics soothe his tumultuous thoughts, for the moment anyways. 

Because...The world is round. 

  Music like this, or any Beatles song really, always cheer up Jake in one way or another. He doesn’t why really, considering his generation being more into the modern hits or at best the types of songs his grandparents listened to, from the 80s. Yet, within his device was nearly tens of Beatles songs and counting. He just likes it. 

Because...The wind is high, it blows my mind. 

  A sudden whoosh followed by telltale footsteps are picked up by his ears. Turning his head, he sees an all too familiar figure, a light smile graces his lips. 

  “Hey, Little Buddy”

  “Hi Uncle Tim”

  Dressed in a combination of red, yellow, green and black similar to his adoptive nephew*, Tim takes a seat right next to Jake, crossed legged. 

  “Care for a little bit of company?”

Because...The wind is high. 

  “If you want, Okay”, Jake replies with a short nod. Using a free hand, Tim gives his nephew a quick hair ruffle, causing the latter to lightly giggle. 

  Both Robins stare into the night sky of Bludhaven, a friendly yet all to tangible silence hangs over the both of them. But neither of them mind it all that much. Often times, peace and quiet allows them to think before talking to the other. 

Love is all, love is new. 

  The clouds continue to float peacefully overhead. A light breeze then brushes the two crime-fighters’ faces. It was a nice cool breeze, nothing bothersome and if anything quite relaxing. 

Love is all, love is you.  

 Finally, Jake breaks the silence. “Do you think I do good as a Robin?”

 In spite of himself, Tim is naturally taken aback by that question. “W-what? You mean by that?”  

 Jake lifts himself into a sitting position, tucking in his knees and burying his face guiltily under his cape. “It’s just....I wasn’t able to save people. You rescue people and do much better than I ever did. You’re an expert. You do a lot and do it so much better than I ever can. Even Uncle Dami and Dad say you’re the better than they were as Robins.”  

  “Really? The Demon Spawn said that” Tim chuckles while placing a hand on the distraught Jake’s shoulder. 

Because...the sky is blue, it makes me cry.

  “Well yeah...but that just means....you’re better than me...but I don’t think i’ll be a good Robin like you are cause you rescue kids like me all the time but...”

Because...the sky is blue. 

  Before Jake can finish and further tears start building in the yes underneath his domino mask, the older Robin gently cradles his arms around, puts Jake’s head on his heartbeat and gently lets his gloved fingers flow through the kid’s hair. 

 As the gentle keyboard solo and harmonic tones of the Beatles’ singing close out the song in his earpiece, Jake can actually still hear his Uncle Tim’s soft hushes and shushes. Together, both sounds are able to let Jake’s breathing start evening out, only one hiccup loose before finally he calms down by the song’s end. 

  After a brief silence between them, Tim finally opens his mouth once he finds the right words to say. 

  “I get you, Little Buddy. I do. I know how it’s like to feel like nothing you did went right and how it’s like when you can’t save people. I know, I had that a few too many times in my life too, even before I became a Robin myself.” 

 Jake moves his head from his Uncle’s chest and looks up to him with wide eyes. “Really?” 

  “Well yeah. This crud happens all the time.  There going to be days when you can’t save everybody and I get it. It’s terrible. But...that’s what keeps us going. To make sure, it doesn’t happen again. Not if you we have anything to say about it.” Tim continues, while also reflecting his own many trials by fire and times he was put into his nephew’s place. 

  “Besides, Jake, what happened before you guys took down Zsasz wasn’t your fault at all. Even your Dad didn’t know about it. Heck, I’d bet a nickel even Bruce didn’t know about it until you guys found out that something was up.” Tim slowly gets Jake off of him while having his hands on Jake’s shoulder’s in a loving way but to where the Tamaranean-Human hybrid’s masked eyes where focused on him. 

  Jake whispers with his eyes gently casting down, “But even if...even after...my folks and me found Zsasz...I almost....” Jake’s right hand was lowered to his abdomen where Zsasz no doubt caused his worst wound that night.

  Tim notices, his left hand gently moving Jake’s away from the abdomen while his right one gently lifts Jake’s chin so that the two can have eye contact. “I know, man. I had moments like that too. So did your Dad, Cass, Damian and...well...”

 “Uncle Jason?” 

  Tim nodded rather bitterly at....THAT reminder. “The important thing is this...you’re alive. You got better and also...you did save people”

  Jake’s eyes widen when he remembers, “Oh Yeah...those other kids that were there in Zsasz’s hideout” 

  Tim nodded firmly and proudly, “Exactly.”

  Once more, Tim’s hands were on Jake’s shoulders. “I know it’ll be hard to get that doubt and other bad things out of your head, Little Buddy. But don’t worry, me, Bruce, Cass, Steph, your Sis, your Mom, Dami, your Dad, even Jason; we’re here for you”, Tim’s states with a widened yet soft smile on his face while pinching Jake’s cheek, much to the latter’s liking. 

  “I guess so. I mean, who knows what Dad and Mom would do with me being there against Zsasz?” 

  Tim shrugs lightly at that, “Eh, guess he would’ve busted out of there anyways since let’s face it, your Dad’s a dork sometimes but not an idiot....well okay maybe around your Mom he can be,” Jake laughs at that. “But you know, whether or not it was the smart thing to do, you stayed to help him and those other kids. He might be the main guy who protects this city but your sister and you stepped up to help him, and you should be proud of that.I don’t wanna sound like some stuff old English teacher but....well for this city and your family...Dick’s your Batman...”

  Jake pipes in “and...”

  “Batman needs a Robin” they both say at the same time. 

  With that, their fists bump and they hold for a good few seconds before standing up from their spots. 

  Tim pipes up with some excitement suddenly, “So, there’s nothing yet on the airwaves for anything fishy going on and your Dad and Mom are still doing their thing elsewhere...wanna get some pizza, Marv’s and George’s is only five blocks from here.” 

  Actually, Jake’s getting a tad bit hungry, as if on cue for Tim’s question, three of his nine stomachs growled. 

  “Lead the way, Robin!” Jake chirps happily. 

  Noting the passing subway train just rolling by on the opposite side of their spots on the rooftop, both the Robin of Gotham and Robin of Bludhaven whip out their grappling hooks, blast them to the nearest building and with their ropes secured, swing downwards, the nighttime coolness in the air thrusting in the faces, adrenaline and excitement rushing through their veins before landing safely on the top of the subway, detaching the ropes back into their devices and planting their boots firmly on the silver, metal surface. 

  “So”, in spite of the rushing winds and grinding of the tracks beneath them, Jake asks his question at a reasonable volume for his Uncle to hear, “how’s Bern doing?” 

  Tim tilted his head to Jake’s directed briefly before comprehending the question, “Oh, Bern’s doing awesome! We just went out to the skate park just yesterday”

  “Dis he find out your a Robin?” 

  With an almost boastful huff and a proud smirk, Tim replies, “Nope. Still hasn’t found after all these years. I don’t know, I guess it’s just a thing about him coming up with so many answers and questions about Bruce and I  that he can get right but always misses it just by the most slim of things. Like this one time, he’d thought Red Hood was basically a younger, ultra cooler alternate universe version of Joker...or like...”

  “Tunnel”

 “Or the time he’d thought Black Bat was literary a Lady Frankenstein because of the stitches on her mask...”

  “Tunnel”

 “Or like the time he thought I was actually Bat...” 

  “Uncle Tim! Tunnel!” 

  Right on time, both Robins ducked, the dark interior of the incoming tunnel passing through without any harm or foul up. Once out of the tunnel, both Robins stood on their crouching spots once again, though Jake was trying to spit out something. 

  “Blegh! I think I swallowed a fly in there” he whined in spite of himself. 

  Tim has a good laugh at that, “Hey, still better than amount of flies I swallowed in my first year” 

  Both laughed as the train was preparing it’s next stop. Exactly where they were headed to.  

*While is Jake is acknowledged as the eight person to hold the Robin mantle in general, he primarily operates as the Robin of Bludhaven whereas Tim operates with both his Young Justice team but more importantly alongside Batman himself in Gotham, making him the ‘Official’ Robin for lack of better words.
