Governess is not a “fall back” Job

There is this thing I encounter a lot online, where someone points out that as a member of the gentry, a woman can’t just get a job, and someone else says, “She could be a governess.” I don’t think she can.

We see some examples of governesses across Regency and Victorian novels. Jane Fairfax in Jane Austen’s Emma, Cynthia Kirkpatrick in Elizabeth Gaskell’s Wives & Daughters, Agnes Grey, in Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë, and of course, Jane Eyre in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

All of these girls are highly educated, most of them with the purpose of becoming a governess at some point. All of them, to the best of my memory, can play music and draw. Most speak French; Jane Fairfax can sing in Italian. They are “highly accomplished”.

Now let’s take a peek at Jane Austen’s heroines. Emma Woodhouse and Anne Elliot would meet those standards (and I’m not sure Emma can speak a second language). They also happen to be the most stable of heroines (Emma doesn’t even need to marry, Anne can just live with Lady Russell or Mary). Elinor and Marianne Dashwood also would probably qualify, and they might actually need to if something went wrong.

But Elizabeth Bennet, Catherine Morland, and Fanny Price? They are not at all qualified to be governesses. Which in Fanny’s case is actually super poor planning, since they don’t seem to know what exactly will be her lot in the future. Elizabeth kind of plays piano, not well, but cannot draw and doesn’t have the formal education people would be looking for: her manners are not of the fashionable world. Catherine and Fanny both cannot draw or play, though I believe both can actually speak French. 

If Fanny Price advertised herself for a governess, I think she’d fail. She’d certainly be beaten out by all the women actually trained for the job, like Jane Fairfax. She doesn’t have marketable skills! Which I think is the real point here. These women do not have options. They either marry someone rich enough to support them or they are a permanent dependant on their families. And especially for Fanny Price, there isn’t much family to fall back on either...

Beneath the Bending Skies, an uplifting historical novel by Jane Kirkpatrick, is the story of Mary Catherine “Mollie” Sheehan Ronan (1852-1940) that takes place in the mid-to- late 1800s, mostly in Montana.

Mollie is only six years old when her mother passes away. Her father moves the family to Colorado and eventually remarries Anne, whom Mollie learns to love. The family moves to Montana as her father dabbles into several businesses, many involving different aspects of gold mining. Mollie strives to be a dutiful daughter, following his often quoted command to “honor thy father.”

When Mollie is 14 she meets her father’s best friend, Peter Ronan, 24 a journalist for a Helena, Montana newspaper. They fall in love and plan to marry. When her father learns of their relationship he is furious and feels deceived by both his daughter and friend. To thwart their relationship, he sends Mollie to a school in California. But being a dutiful daughter has its limits and even though separated, her love for Peter Ronan grows. They eventually reunite and when Mollie turns nineteen they marry, though her father strongly disapproves, causing a rift between them.

After some disasters with a fire at the newspaper building and a major theft in his mining claim, Peter accepts a job as supervisor at the Jocko Agency in Montana serving the Confederated Salish, Pend d’Oreille and Kootenai tribes. Mollie strives to be a gracious hostess to government dignitaries and tribal chiefs alike, to be a gracious wife and loving mother, and to keep a cheerful attitude. Above all, she aspires to be agile, to accept whatever comes her way and maintain a willingness to change.  

I have read and enjoyed many books by Jane Kirkpatrick and this is one of my favorites. The author’s ability to capture the essence of time and place in this historical read is engaging, informative and told with dependable accuracy. Beneath the Bending Skies is an unforgettable journey of love, respect and duty.

Is Your Heroine a TRUE Heroine?

In the first chapter of Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen lays out all the criteria of being a HEROINE, almost all of which poor Catherine Morland does not meet. I have adapted these criteria into a simple yes or no test, which you can apply to your favourite heroine. Here is the test and the results for some Jane Austen, Brontë, and Gaskell heroines/female characters

Abusive parent/guardian - 1 point for each abusive parent or guardian, Dead parents - 1 point for each dead parent, and then 1 point for each of the following: Great Personal Beauty, Poor family, Heroic care of animals/nature, Taste for gardens, Extraordinarily intelligent, Plays music/sings, Draws/does art, Focused on schooling, Calm and quiet, Reads poetry

There are 12 criteria, though the possible score can be higher (for example, if you have lost a mother, father, and stepmother, that would count as 3 dead parents)

Disclaimer: you must use your own judgement for some answers. For example, does Anne Elliot count as poor since her father is heavily in debt? Also, some data is not readily available, we don’t know if Elizabeth Bennet reads poetry or not (my guess is no).These are my best estimates given the available data in each novel. Also, Jane Eyre is generally calm and quiet, she just has explosions sometimes, so I gave her that point.

Please add ratings of your own heroines if you want! I haven’t read Wuthering Heights so I can’t do the heroine scores.
