Thumb Scenes- Adult Life Skills (2016)

The thumb scenes are short interludes in the film Adult Life Skills, directed by Rachel Tunnard. These scenes depict two astronauts played by a pair of thumbs with faces drawn on them.

Their conversations may seem mundane and boring, but they are laced with meaning that reflects the plot of the film. These kinds of conversations are something I enjoy seeing in film.

Adult Life Skills (Rachel Tunnard, 2016)

I recently watched and wrote a little about the film, The Pretty One (Jenée LaMarque, 2013). Like that one, this film is a portrait of a woman making her way through life after the death of her twin. With The Pretty One, though I enjoyed it a lot, I was troubled by how little it focused on the grieving process and how quickly we saw the protagonist bounce back. Adult Life Skills seems to me a much more realistic look at a person who has been devastated by such an intimate and unimaginable loss. I realize, of course, that it’s not really fair to compare these films on this ground because they are different stories with different messages. The Pretty One is about empowerment. This film is about not drowning in a stormy sea.

This is a wonderful, very sad film. The cast (especially Jodie Whittaker and Ozzy Myers) is great, and I love the videos that Anna made with her brother and continues to make with her thumbs. Paul Thomas Anderson once said that he doesn’t like stories where people make 180-degree changes in their lives because that’s so unrealistic - he prefers stories where there’s a change of only 3 or 4 degrees. (I’m paraphrasing something I heard in an interview a decade ago.) And I feel the same way, and think about this often. The changes that we see in Anna over the course of this film are much closer to what PTA was talking about than we see in characters in a lot of films, and that makes this story resonate much more strongly with me. It feels honest and true. In terms of setting and texture, the overcast and mood and moorland in this film are also all very appealing to me. That is my kind of landscape/vibe.
