glimpses through fem!reader and Spencer’s relationship, through four instances of spills.
word count: 3.5k ish
a/n: i love the idea that for some of us, our personalities are made up all the things we like about the people we know and see. the idea that we’re all little bits and pieces of the things we love, and our experiences. this sort of explores that. (also this was mildly self indulgent because much like reader i’m a klutz!) <3
warnings/tags: 18+ for implied intimacy and canon typical violence for cm, pet names up the wazoo, reader is lowkey clumsy, Derek Morgan being himself, reader gets injured but she’s fine, who’s Maeve?, anxious love confession, Spencer adores reader so so much, S1 and S6 (ish) Spencer, Spencer in and post prison, love letters, marriage, kids, and briefly mentioned pregnancy, girl dad!Spencer Reid my beloved

coffee - the first stain
To be honest, at first, he’s appalled.
The mug you set down on his desk isnt his, so God knows whose mouth was on it last. You - somewhat carelessly - plopped it down on the file he’s working on, grinning that thousand watt smile he’s secretly become fond of. You’re wearing a sweater he noticed that brings out your eyes - a berry colored wool garment that he wishes you’d wear more.
“Hey! Morgan said you were exhausted. Thought I’d make you coffee.”
You pick it up, and set it down again, for emphasis, and a few drops make their way down the side and onto his case file, surely creating a cinnamon toned half circle that Hotch will not love. You don’t notice, watching his face.
“I made it with a bunch of sugar. Just how you like it, right?”
Suddenly, he realizes he’s been staring up at you, and then his mouth is moving faster than his brain.
“Yeah, I uh, I am pretty tired, now that you say it. Didn’t sleep well, long night, you know?”
You nod, sipping your own coffee, fingers wrapped around the ceramic.
“I get that. Goes with the job, right?”
“Oh, absolutely, yeah, I- wait, Morgan said that? Did he— what else did he tell you?”
You grin, coffee mug to lips again.
Stop staring, Reid.
“Nothing, really. Just said you needed a boost. Thought I’d provide.”
Titling your head a tad, you look down, a mild panic crossing your face when you see you’ve stained his file.
“Oh my God - Reid, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean-“
He’s quick to shake his head, hands coming up to reassure, his eyes wide.
“No no no, it’s okay, truly, I-I made a mistake on that one anyways. I’ll need to have a new copy printed, honest.”
Frowning, you look him over, searching for a tell, something to let you know whether he’s lying or not.
“Are you sure? I can do it, I’m not that behind on mine, I could—“
Before he thinks - you’d assume, with all his brains, he would - his hand grabs your arm, that gorgeous sweater under his finger tips, his eyes locked with yours. He says your name, once, his tone more serious than he’d like.
“It’s okay. Thanks for the coffee.”
You blink, and then a slow grin takes over your face.
“You’re welcome. Let me know if you need more.”
For a moment, neither of you move, the heat of his hand burning through the wool on your arm, until he lets go like you’re the one scorching his skin, like he’s just realized that he’s touching you. You laugh a little, awkwardly, and he grins with the same level of unpracticed nerves, and you head back to your desk.
He picks up the mug, and sips slowly, closing his eyes for a moment - it does have a mountain of sweetness, the saccharine liquid coating his mouth but soothing his senses. When he sets it down again, it’s on a part of his workspace not occupied by case work. Just as predicted, the file that once housed the beverage now bears a semi circle of dried java. His pointer finger traces the stain, clockwise and then counter, for a moment, before he glances up in horror to see Morgan, of all people, signature smirk in place.
“‘Thanks for the coffee’. I don’t what’s sweeter, that coffee you just got or-“
“Shut up.”
He mumbles, face flushed, small smile on his face despite the teasing. He traces the coffee stain one last time before he hastily tucks the soiled paper away in a drawer.
blood - the second stain
“What do you mean you aren’t getting a response from her on comms?”
He’s so scared, he can’t even stop to think just how breathless and afraid he sounds, as he turns to Hotch, who fixes him with a look that clearly says, Calm down, Reid.
“It could just be non-functional, or got knocked off, or caught.”
Hotch says calmly, almost maddeningly so. Spencer swallows back the protests, the arguments that swell up in his throat like bile.
They’d created, and given the profile, and once Penelope had narrowed down the couple possible properties their potential unsub owned, you, Morgan, and Prentiss had headed into an abandoned storage facility, silent and careful.
Perhaps not careful enough.
The voice in his head reminds him, almost sadly, and he grits his teeth inside tightly drawn and chapped lips. Shaky hands smooth over his slacks, again and again, as his eyes stay fixed on Hotch.
“Ask-ask Morgan again. If she’ll respond.”
He’s given a frown, dark brows pulling together in a very typical Hotch-like manner.
“Is there a specific reason you’re asking about her, Reid?”
Is there? God, he doesn’t know. You bring him coffee nearly every morning, but perhaps that’s just kindness. Then there’s the chocolate sprinkled donuts that start his work day from time to time - maybe you just enjoy pastry treats, and think of him, when you buy one. Oh, and heaven forbid he forget the way you’ll come by his desk, and ask for clarification on a piece of paperwork or a procedure - that you probably could’ve asked Hotch or Prentiss about. You listen, active listening too, eye contact, body still - when his explanations turn into rambles about statistics about this type of criminal, your eyes watching his face, your own voice quiet.
Is he deluding himself? Seeing phantom romance where there’s maybe merely nothing but platonic affection? Blinking, once, he shakes his head in response to his Unit Chief’s question.
“No Hotch. I’m just worried, she-well, she hasn’t responded, and Morgan has, and Prentiss has, and I—“
Speak of the devil, Morgan’s voice comes through, demanding and tense.
“I need a medic. Prentiss and I secured the unsub, but, not before—“
Oh God. Not before that bastard got to you with a baseball bat, to the back of the head, you unaware before your face met the concrete below. Spencer’s not even asking for permission, snatching the keys to an SUV off the desk nearby and flooring the gas pedal.
You can’t die. Not before I—
Driving there is like hell - his lungs burn like there’s smoke and ash polluting them, and fear feels like too tame a word to describe the overwhelming panic that seizes his heart the more he drives.
I’m a fool, he thinks wildly, as his knuckles grip the steering wheel like a vice. A damn fool if I don’t tell her-
He’s barely got the thing in park before he’s scrambling out the driver’s side door, Converse immediately coated from the dusty ground outside the facility.
When he finds Morgan, and you, head lolled to the side, eyes closed, face pale as his must be, he falls to his knees with little regard for his own pain or discomfort. Morgan watches, careful, his voice gentle when he speaks, trying to calm his terrified friend.
“She’s still out, Reid. Just a nasty whack to the back of her head, okay? Easy.”
Trembling thumbs trace and hold your face, like it’s made of paper, as he swallows hard to keep the ache behind his eyes from becoming tear tracks down his face. He spots the gash, trickling crimson down your ashy skin, onto his shaking hand, but doesn’t move from holding your face. A deep contusion, furious and violet-toned, on the back of your head, makes the air leave his chest like he’s been choked.
Beautiful girl, I couldn’t stop this.
He could sob, and he nearly does, until you make some sort of confused noise and force open your eyes. Light rushes through his heart, rekindled warmth as he meets your eyes, and yet, he finds himself almost frozen.
“Spencer? What, I thought-“
“Listen to me.”
He forces himself to speak - he has too. What if he doesn’t get the chance, and all he ever gets to associate you with is caffeine, sprinkles, and a listening ear? No, that won’t do. Not in the slightest.
You meet his eyes, hazy, but listening. Morgan’s brows furrow, as he protests,
“God, man, she just woke up, let her-“
Ignored, as Spencer often finds himself doing when there’s more pressing matters than banter, than propriety.
“You need to know. That I-care about you.”
Blinking, you swallow, and suddenly, the throbbing pain in the back of your skull is slightly dimmed.
“That I can’t let another sunrise or sunset go by where you don’t know that I’d give you the stars if you’d let me. Where I can’t touch you, where I can’t make sure you understand that I’ll protect the light you have inside you until I’m burnt from it. You absolute angel, I-“
He shudders, almost afraid of his own earnest, and says your name like it’s a prayer.
“I love you. Even if you don’t return it, my heart is yours.”
Morgan’s grin is wide, and he shakes his head, almost in amazement. Your own face is flushed, as you hear sirens and medics, your voice crackly and rough from pain, but still, that smile he’s grown to associate with his heart fluttering graces your face.
“My heart is yours, Spencer. Glad you’re finally realizing how absolutely in love I am with you, you goose, even if it took all this.”
He laughs a little, almost deliriously, and smooths his trembling hand over your face.
“Guess the doughnuts weren’t enough, huh?”
You manage, and he shakes his head, quick to push back.
“They were. You’re always enough for me, no matter what you do.”
Could he sound any more smitten?
Procedure says he can’t go in the ambulance with you - there’s no need, you’re just getting stitches and some ice and he can visit you at the hospital, okay? But as he heads back to the - oh dear, still running, he really was in a hurry, wasn’t he? - car, Morgan glances sideways at him, signature smirk in place.
“Pretty boy, I didn’t know you had it in you.”
Spencer stares down at his hands in his lap. They’re stained, and a grimace floods his face when he realizes it’s not dirt, but your blood, coating his fingertips. A soft sigh escapes his lips, and he bites back a nastier retort than his friend deserves.
“I guess I did. I can’t believe it took-“
Morgan sighs, stopping Spencer’s inevitable incoming guilt filled rambles.
“Hush. You told her. That’s what matters.”
Glancing down at Spencer’s fidgeting hands in his lap, he presses on the gas.
“Let’s get there, so you can get that off you. I’m shocked you got all dirty, with your germ thing.”
Spencer shrugs, looking out the window.
“For her? I’d-I think I’d do anything. No matter what it stained.”
Soap finds his hands at the hospital, but he finds you soon after, unable to stop the gentle press of his lips to your forehead, or the soft murmurs that follow as he tries to remind himself that much more of your blood didn’t spill.
ink - the third stain
Emily has to physically hold you back in the court room, when they take him out, his eyes fixed on you, and the team, almost hopeless.
“Then your client is a flight risk.”
You’re quite literally fighting her, suddenly terrified in a whole new way for your boyfriend, tears staining your face.
“Bail is denied.”
She’s got both arms wrapped around you, her soft, ‘I know’s, and ‘I’m sorry’s barely heard over your own pleas for her to let you go.
“Defendant will be remanded to federal custody pending trial.”
You hear someone sobbing - angry, fear-filled wailing - and until Emily has you turned around, your face in her shoulder, comes the realization that it’s you.
“He’s-Emily, what are we going to do, he’s not going to be okay, I-I can’t—“
The days that follow are dark. Going to the BAU without Spencer, let alone waking up without him beside you, is enough to send you into a spiral. You try to remind yourself that he’s worse off, that whatever hell he’s experiencing is ten times worse than your quiet fear and loneliness. So, to try to combat the weight that squashes your heart, you write him letters. Daily letters.
Spencer -
We have a case in Florida. Emily says it’ll be quick, but the Florida ones never are. We’d solve it ten times faster with you, you know? Geographical profiles are much harder alone, that’s for sure. The plane ride is quieter without you, and no one’s saying anything - you’d be saying something if you were here. Maybe that’s why we’re quiet.
Every day. You don’t relent. If you can’t mail them in whatever town you get stuck in for work, you mail them in one big envelope when you get back home.
Spencer -
That case was rough. I cried twice - once when I spent over two hours staring at the map at the precinct and couldn’t find anything new, and once when Rossi accidentally snapped at me. He said he was sorry, that he’s ‘on edge’ right now - but aren’t we all? Emily’s working really hard to try to get you home. I wish I could come see you. I hope you’re safe. I love you. ♡
When you learn that he didn’t put you on the list of people who can visit him in that concrete hell, you almost lose what’s left your nerve, breaking down in Emily’s office, shaking. You don’t know whether you’re furious, in despair, or numb to it all.
“Emily, why? Why doesn’t he want me to come see him? If it was me, I’d want to see him every day, I wouldn’t want him to leave!”
She sighs, her face tight. Twisting your hands in your lap, you search her face for answers. Nausea claws at your throat.
“Honestly, my guess is it’s just that. He knows that if you come, he won’t want you to leave. It’ll hurt too much.”
“But Tara, and you, and his mother, and-
Spencer -
I think I understand. Sort of. I feel like there’s this pressure in my chest, and I can’t ever fully breathe. Not since you’ve been away. The weight on my heart never goes away. Missing you more every hour. ♡
Despite the slew of handwritten letters that reach him, you only get one back, after you and the team search his apartment - you keep it in your purse pocket, folded safe, and read it whenever your throat feels tight and your eyes burn. His untidy scrawl is enough to make you feel like a part of him is actually inside this letter - like he’s reading it himself to you, interwoven in the fibers of the paper.
Angel -
I wanted you to know I’m in solitary now - I made sure of it. I know you want me safe, almost more than I do. I love you beyond what I can say, my beautiful girl.
Yours, Spencer.
One night, you’re curled up in Spencer’s apartment, writing him a letter, as is your nightly routine. The ink stains the side of your hand now - an ever-present reminder of the fact that your heart constantly feels ripped out of your body. After addressing the letter to him, your phone buzzes - Emily.
Oh God.
“Hey. We figured out that- oh, you don’t care about all that. He’s coming home.”
She doesn’t need to tell you twice. Paper and ink pen tumble to the floor as you shove your feet in shoes and snatch your jacket off the coat tree. Tension is coiled in your body the entire way there. Ink still stains the side of your hand, a permanent reminder that every time you needed to just tell him something - you had to pick up pen and paper.
Heart in your throat, you push open the door with shaking hand. There he stands, your Spencer. He’s still him, you think, although his face is tight, and sleep clearly hasn’t been something he’s seen much of.
Three months.
You walk in slowly, body trembling. One hand reaches up, runs through the curls that have grown so long.
“Your hair.”
You breathe out, voice barely audible. He nods, his face almost impassive. Tentative fingers trail down his cheek, make a path to hold his face. He nods, and then, you notice his eyes are misty.
“My angel.” He murmurs, almost in awe, and takes you in his arms with a fervor. Crushed against him, face buried in the cool fabric of his shirt, you bite back a sob, arms threaded around him.
“No. Cry, my darling girl, I’m— I’m tired of doing it alone.”
How could you refuse him? Just hearing his voice, let alone the relief you feel at being touched by him again, is enough to satisfy you for days, you think. For a bit, all that’s heard is uneven breaths, until he speaks, his voice rough and shaky.
“I need to see your face.”
He pulls back, face shining with tears, and you swallow back the lump that just won’t leave your throat.
Calloused hands - less soft than you remember - take yours, and then he frowns.
“Your hand.”
Your right hand is held up, inspected, like the blue on the inner side of it is red instead. You smile, laughing a little, still breathless.
“Ink, baby. Just ink. I was writing you a letter.”
He shakes his head, rubbing at the navy stain with his thumb, as if that will remove it.
“I would’ve kept writing. Never given up. You’d be sick of letters from me.”
“Never, sweet girl. There is no part of me who could ever find himself sick of you.”
After you’ve come home, he wastes no time in pressing less than tender kisses to your mouth and jawline and the column of your throat. It’s not until he’s reacquainted himself with your contours and the dip of your hipbones and the soft way you gasp out his name when he does that, that has you next to him, so he can see your face.
He needs to see your face.
Hand in his, still faintly stained from ink, he examines it, and then, softly, hesitantly, he meets your eyes.
“You know ink poisoning is actually rare? Pens we use are designed with non-toxic ink, to decrease any chances of fatal ingestion.”
You never mind his information sharing, but your eyebrows furrow tiredly at his timing.
“Spence, I’m not saying I don’t care, but we just— you just—”
“Please. Let me look at the woman I love and pretend for a few moments that my damn eidetic memory won’t play back the last three months of my life like some wretched tape.”
You let him, as he holds your cobalt-colored hand and your eyes droop, his soft voice telling you that rubbing alcohol will probably get that stain out. It almost feels normal.
Almost.
paint - the final stain
“Spence! Can you get paint water out of carpet with any amount of ease?”
You call your husband, turning back to your mildly sheepish five year old, whose water color adventure on the coffee table has quickly gone south.
In walks Spencer, not even noticing the overturned hard plastic cup or purpley-blue spill, eyes going straight to his daughter’s nearly finished picture.
“Beautiful, Penny. Looks incredible.”
He murmurs, bending to be eye level with a beaming Penelope, hand on her arm, before turning to you, mild tension and stress lining your face. His smile is gentle. It’ll wash out.
“Rubbling alcohol, angel.”
You nod, tension easing from your shoulders.
“We’ll go get it - we always clean our messes up, right lovely?”
He asks your daughter, lifting her with practiced care. She giggles, nodding, as they head from the room, letting you take a breath and set up the paints and picture in a new location - the kitchen table, with some newspaper tucked underneath because she’s five, and you of all people know spills happen.
Once she’s set up again - she really is so quiet when she’s engrossed in something - you find yourself curled up with Spencer on the couch, head on his shoulder, watching her paint and sing-song to herself.
“Think she’s lonely?”
Spencer asks, turning to you, his grin wide.
Troublemaker.
“Hmm. I think you just like me pregnant.”
He chuckles, pressing a kiss to your hair.
“Maybe. Maybe I don’t want Penny to be sad, ever.”
Silence, then, for a bit.
“She’s so much like you.”
Spencer muses, his fingers drawing patterns on the side of your sweater. You smile, fondly.
“You say that because I’m clumsy. She was dancing around with that paintbrush, that cup of paint water stood no chance.”
“No, I say that because she shines like you. No matter what tries to dim her.”
That night, when you peek in your daughter’s door to see Spencer reading her A Little Princess, she’s propped up against him, hazel eyes barely open. Affection swells in your chest as his voice carries on, even though she’s clearly almost in dreamland. In you walk, pressing a kiss first to her forehead, then Spencer’s. He smiles gentle up at you - this is his favorite time of the day - and keeps reading.
“Perhaps there is a language which is not made of words, and everything in the world understands it.”
Once you’re back in the living room, you check on the earlier spill from today. All that’s left is a barely visible blue spot, no bigger than a quarter.
“No one will see it but you.”
Steadying, warm arms wrap around your ribs, and soft lips press against the side of your neck, washing away any insecurity about the state of your carpet.
“Besides, stains aren’t bad, sweet girl. They’re little reminders that things happened, good things, or bad things that brought us together. Memories, attached to splotches, attached to wounds, to paper, to skin. How convenient, to carry our most impactful moments like heaven-sent tattoos.”

𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒇𝒖𝒔𝒆
i'm curled up on the sidewalk. an explosion, white hot searing pain, and deafeningly loud; a force so strong I was sent flying backwards. it wasn't a physical explosion, but it had all the aspects of one. words dripping with venom burned my skin. just the yelling itself hammered into my ears and made my existence that of a mouse. anger was thrown at me so hard it knocked me backwards. the feeling in my stomach forced tears out of my eyes, and i didn't fight it.
i finally fought the lion, whose teeth gnawed on our bones longer than i was alive. all of my pent up anger broke the dam. with my accusations came consequences; consequences with a force equivalent to an explosion.
the sidewalk cools my burning skin. the cool night air soothes my mind like a mother nurturing a child. the rich blue of the sky is like a ceiling of a house safer than i've ever had. it's so calming, i feel as if i'm not physically here, but that i'm engrossed in a painting.
i know at one point this peacefulness will be over; that i may never have this again. i will have to go back to my house with the short fuse and the extinguisher. i will have to place my words carefully with a steady hand, or savor the mood. i will then worry again, but now is not the time.

Soulmates had always been somewhat of a fairytale when I was a little girl. I used to snuggle underneath my pale blue comforter that was decorated with daises—it had been something my father had made when my mother told him she was pregnant with me— being snuggled up underneath it when my mother used to narrate how she discovered my father was her soulmate always made the story that much more magical to me. Why? Because your soulmates first words to you would be imprinted onto your skin, almost like a tattoo, but apparently much more painful. Because the words weren’t just engrained onto your skin, but burned onto your soul.
The first thing my father said to my mother was ‘What’cha doin’ down there darlin’?’ because she had been kneeling at the edge of the grass on her parent’s property, staring longingly at the field that stretched out somewhat endlessly towards the horizon. Daisies blossomed out across the field along with wildflowers. She longed to climb the fence that separated her from the only sight in her life that bought her some semblance of peace, and away from the societal expectations her mother and father were placing on her shoulders. Marrying well, having children, being the perfect wife. Her parents weren’t even soulmates. They had married for prestige and wealth over true love. My mother hadn’t wanted that, but alas they refused to listen. She sighed in response to his question and said, ‘watching the daisies sway with the breeze.’ After a beat, both of them were screaming in pain as the words appeared; my mothers on her chest over her heart, and my fathers along his inner arm, starting at his wrist and falling just short of his inner elbow. They had ran away the next day, and lived happily ever after.
At least that’s how my mother told it to the child version of me. I was absolutely fascinated by the concept of the universe creating someone who was completely perfect for you in every sense of the word. Perhaps my interest was aided by having parents who were soulmates, some of the kids in my classes at school didn’t, and therefore didn’t see what I saw. I couldn’t dispute that you didn’t have to be soulmates to love someone. But young me saw the way my mother and father looked at each other, how they shared a myriad of looks, ranging from soft, to sad, to angry. How they seemed to know what the other needed without a word needing to be said. How they seemed to only be completely content when they were touching in someway, whether it was holding hands or cuddling together. It was a kind of love I didn’t see anywhere else, and I hadn’t seen except in other soulmates throughout my life. Even before knowing a couple, you could tell by observing their behaviour, whether they were destined or not. Some were content to never meet their soulmate, while others longed desperately to find their other half.
But as I grew and lost my parents to a house fire at the age of eleven, my desire and hope started to fade. How could I long for love when I knew how much it hurt when you lost them? Growing up in the foster care system made it easy to keep people at arms length, including the families I was placed with. At least until I turned seventeen and Gerard, one of the foster parents in the new family I’d been paired with, had hit his wife. I hadn’t even thought, moving faster than I thought I ever could, I put myself between them. And when I’d held my hand up somewhat defensively, he’d gone flying into the wall behind him, the force enough to knock him out cold. I had stared at my hand in confusion and when Amy, the woman I’d been about to take a punch for had practically shoved my out of the door while screaming that ‘freaks weren’t allowed in this house’, a sense of dread ran through my veins.
Freak.
I was a freak.
It was then that my desire for a soulmate dissipated completely, and over time my insecurities extended to everything. My body. My laugh. My intelligence. Everything. I grew to hate myself, and I knew that if I couldn’t love me, how could I expect someone else to love me? Even someone who was supposedly destined to be with me would see all of the flaws that I did. It was hopeless.
What I didn’t know was that not only would my life change for the better in the following years, but also I would be introduced to my soulmate whether I wanted to be or not. Fate was funny that way.
Five years later.
‘Good morning sunshine!’ Steve Rogers practically yelled at me as I shuffled into the kitchen.
I simply groaned in response, my footsteps towards the coffee maker becoming more insistent when I caught a waft of the java goodness. I pulled out my own personal mug—it was absolutely ginormous and covered in cartoon Captain Americas wearing the old uniform Steve had worn before the ice. Tony had given it to me for a gag gift a few years ago at Christmas and I’d laughed harder than I had in a long time when I opened it. That had made Steve’s embarrassment cool somewhat, and I think that was why the mug hadn’t ended up ‘accidentally’ smashed afterwards. That being said, big, blonde and broody always, very dramatically, rolled his eyes when he saw it and it always made me chuckle and wink at him as I sipped my hot beautiful beverage.
After I’d poured the mug as close to the rim as I dared, I added three sugars and practically inhaled half before finally taking a look around to see who else was up. The tower had become home to me when Tony had bought me here just after I’d turned eighteen. I’d been on the streets for almost a year at that point, and after I’d intercepted someone trying to fire a bomb at Iron man by using my magic, and redirecting it to the one who’d fired it, I’d been dubbed an unofficial avenger. The snarky genius had taken me under his wing, he hadn’t pushed me for anything, for company, for information, he hadn’t put pressure on me to use my powers for his team. He’d simply been there, even when I didn’t know I needed him. Eventually, I’d warmed up to him and started to trust him with stories of my parents, about what happened to them, about the foster families and eventually, how I’d ended up homeless. His eyes had darkened with rage at that story and he’d scooped me up into a hug and assured me that I wasn’t a freak, that I was special and that was absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. I’d basically collapsed into his arms after that, my tears cascading down my cheeks after being held back so long by the numbing dam that Tony had managed to shatter.
It still took me a while to warm up to new people, and my insecurities were still there concerning soulmates, but I had a home and a family now. Which was more than I ever could have asked for after losing my parents all those years ago.
‘Morning kiddo!’ Tony grinned and gave a little wave from where he was, which was currently on Steve’s lap as the super soldier gently ran his fingers through my dad’s hair.
That was another thing—I didn’t know when Tony had started to become dad to me, but he had. I hadn’t said it to him yet, mainly because I didn’t know how he would react, I didn’t want him to feel like I was forcing a responsibility onto him that he didn’t want or ask for. So I kept it to myself.
‘Morning,’ I smiled, my mood much brighter after I’d basically inhaled half of my cup.
My eyes filtered over to the only other person who was up at this time and a huge grin split across my face when I realised whom it was. My cup was placed aside and I ran and basically launched myself onto the sofa where the giant god of thunder was sitting. He’d become an uncle to me over the years, and when he returned from Asgard it never failed to make me happy.
‘Thor! When did you get here?’ I yelled in excitement, my arms winding around his neck as I hugged him hard. It had to have been six months since I saw him last.
‘Not too long ago, little one.’ Thor chuckled, settling me onto his lap and affectionately running his hand through my hair.
‘I hope you’re staying longer this time.’ I gave him a look because the last time he’d dropped in, he’d only stayed for a few days.
‘I will be here for at least a week.’ He promised.
Appeased by his words I dropped my head to his shoulder and closed my eyes and took a moment to inhale his scent of rain and power (which shouldn’t be a kind of smell, but if anyone was going to smell of power it was going to be a god), and sighed happily as it soothed the part of me that always acted up whenever someone I cared about was gone. It was like a thread around my heart that burned enough to be uncomfortable, but not painful. My mother and father’s thread always burned, but that was okay. It reminded me how lucky I had been to have them in my life; there were many who couldn’t say the same.
Now that Thor and I were silent across from my Dad and Steve, I found myself smiling again when their conversation drifted over to us.
‘I told ya.’ Steve sounded smug.
‘Well if Thor hadn’t been here, I’m sure she would have come to us for morning snuggles like usual. She hadn’t seen him in like six months, it makes sense.’ Dad snarked back, and when I glanced over I could see him handing Steve a crumpled note.
I chuckled, but otherwise didn’t comment, knowing their relationship was unique in the way only soulmates could be, and it worked for them. It was obvious how much they loved and adored one another, the same way my parents had. Thor’s hand moved gently up and down my spine and I was helpless to stop my eyes from fluttering shut, as I drifted into a content sleep.
//
‘Shh you’ll wake her!’
‘It’s not fair! We’ve all missed good ole’ thunder too! We shouldn’t have to forgo cuddles just because she fell asleep on him!’
‘Don’t be such a child, you know how she gets when one of us are away.’
The voice softened, ‘right. Sometimes I forget.’
I stirred, blinking against the light that was filtering in through the floor to ceiling windows that outlined the living room. I was a little disorientated, but I settled when I remembered I was with Thor, a glance over to the loveseat told me that my dad and Steve must have left at some point. And when I focused I realised Clint and Tasha were the ones arguing not too quietly in the kitchen. With a fond shake of my head I carefully manoeuvred myself off the god’s lap and used my powers to lay him down so he would be more comfortable. If he’d only landed this morning then he would need a lot more sleep. After placing a blanket over him and making sure his head was supported with a pillow, I kissed his forehead and walked up to the deadly red head and sassy Hawkeye.
‘Is it still morning?’ I asked sheepishly.
‘Yes, honey. It’s about ten thirty.’ Tasha smiled warmly, like she always did when she greeted me.
I nodded through a yawn and kissed her cheek and Clint’s before asking, ‘where’s Tony?’
‘Down in the lab. Steve went out for a run with Sam so he thought he’d tinker on the birthday present he got for him.’ Tasha grinned, her eyes sparkling knowingly.
‘Okay.’ I frowned, knowing that probably meant it was something sexual which I absolutely did not need to know about.
After I refilled my coffee mug with some fresh warm java, I left the two spies with a parting kiss to the cheek and a promise to Tasha to meet her in the gym for some sparring at noon.
‘JARVIS can you let Tony know I’m coming down to the lab please? Tasha’s look upstairs tells me that I don’t wanna know what he’s doing down there for Steve, so I’d like for him to have some time to put away what ever he’s making for sexy times with his husband.’ I practically shuddered at the thought. Just thinking of your parents ever having sense was just… wrong.
‘Of course Y/N.’
‘Thank you, JARVIS.’ I smiled, knowing the Al couldn’t see me but I had a soft spot for the computer nonetheless.
By the time I’d made it downstairs, Dad was hunched over and tinkering with something that just looked like a bunch of metal to me, so I felt safe going in and taking the empty stool next to him.
‘Morning.’ I mumbled kissing his cheek and wrapping my arm around his waist, ‘whatcha working on?’
He kissed my cheek and dropped what he’d been working on, before twisting his stool so he could wrap both arms around me. I smiled a little and placed my mug down before reciprocating the gesture.
‘Nothing really, Sherbet.’ He replied softly, the nickname one I’d acquired after an embarrassing incident on the first Halloween I’d spent at the tower. I frowned when dad sighed deeply, something he only did when he was really upset about something. Usually it happened when Steve and he had fought. But things had seemed fine earlier, and I know Tasha would have mentioned an argument to me.
‘What’s wrong?’
‘Steve’s gotta leave for a little while.’ He sighed again but pulled back and started tinkering with whatever the hell he was making.
‘On a mission?’
‘No. You know how we’ve been working on bringing his friend Bucky home after Steve saw him a few months ago?’ I nodded and he continued, ‘well the software I created has picked him up in Russia, so Stevie is gonna go and get him and bring him home.’
‘You’re allowed not to be okay with that, you know.’ I took one of his hands in mine and squeezed it comfortingly, ‘I mean, I know you understand that he’s been reconditioned and controlled for so long and he had no idea what he was doing, or no choice in the things he did, but that doesn’t mean you have to be okay with him just coming to live here considering everything.’
‘I know I don’t have to be, but I am.’ He smiled, his eyes softening at my concern for him, ‘I’m a little upset over knowing that he killed my mom and dad, instead of believing they died in a car crash like I’d originally believed for so long. But like you said, he didn’t know what he was doing and I can’t hold that against him.’ He shook his head vehemently at the thought.
‘Then why do you seem so sad?’ I frowned, confused.
‘Because Stevie is gonna be gone for at least a week. That’s if things go well. It could be longer. Much longer.’ He sighed again, his brown eyes dimming, ‘I hate to be away from him while he runs, but being away for that long. It hurts.’
‘It does?’ I asked tentatively. My mom and dad never had to separate for such a long time, so I didn’t know anything about the parting being painful.
He nodded and squeezed my hand in assurance, ‘it’s hard to explain, but it kind of feels like he takes a part of me with him, and the part of me that’s tethered to him is just reaching out to try and pull him back.’
‘That’s awful. I’m sorry.’ I murmured, my heart squeezing at the thought of someone I loved being in pain.
‘It’s okay, Sherbet. It’s all worth it, trust me.’ He winked, and just like that we fell into a comfortable silence.
I sipped on my coffee and watched him work; still having no idea what he was trying to build. Occasionally one of us would pipe up with a question and a comment and we’d chat for a little while before falling into the quiet again. At around eleven I ventured upstairs and after showering and getting dressed for a workout, I went to the kitchen and made my dad a ham and mustard sandwich. I also grabbed a bag of lightly salted chips and a bottle of water. After dropping them off at the lab with strict orders for him to eat and drink something that wasn’t coffee, I left for my workout with Tasha. On my way I couldn’t help but wonder about something I hadn’t let myself properly wonder about for years. I briefly let myself think about what I would like to be loved the way that my dad and Steve loved each other. The way that Tasha and Clint, Thor and Bruce and Pepper and Sam loved each other. For a moment I remembered why I’d been overcome with the romantic idea of finding the perfect person, but that came to a screeching halt when I caught my reflection in the mirrors that lined the back of the gym. I wasn’t beautiful. I wasn’t funny. I wasn’t interesting. I was disgusting. I didn’t deserve a soulmate.
With that reminder, I cleared my throat and met Tasha in the ring with a forced smile, ready to focus on something that didn’t make my heart drop to my stomach.
//
It took Steve three weeks to come home. One week was spent tracking the other super soldier down, and the other two was spent in Asgard with Thor after the god assured Steve that the healers on his planet could remove the conditioning put in place by Hydra and remove the Winter Soldier completely. At least, remove the existence of the other personality that had been forced into his brain. The memories however would remain, and I only hoped that the memories of who he was before helped remind him of who he was, and not who he was forced to be. I couldn’t imagine what he would be going through, and my heart squeezed in sympathy for Steve’s best friend.
The whole time Steve was gone was spent sparring, practicing my powers, and looking after my dad. Whether that was making sure he ate three meals a day, or forcing him to go to bed and refusing to let him stay in the lab between the hours of 11pm and 7am to assure he wouldn’t come back (JARVIS helped with that), I looked out for him. Because it was obvious how lost he was without Steve, we were all missing the Captain but of course, no one missed him like my dad.
He finally returned at 12:30am exactly three weeks and one day after he left. I had been asleep on the couch at the time, and the sound of the elevator sliding open had stirred me awake. Once I’d registered who it was I took off in a full sprint and launched myself at him. He caught me with a laugh and just hugged me tight, knowing I needed a moment to absorb that he was back. I inhaled and the scent of soap and roses made me relax contentedly.
‘I missed you.’ I mumbled pulling back enough to kiss his cheek before resting my head back onto his shoulder.
‘I know, kiddo.’ He stroked my hair and I felt myself dozing again, helpless at resisting sleep when I felt so safe.
//
I managed to sleep until 6am. I’ll be honest I could have cried when I rolled over and saw the red numbers mocking me, but I knew that now I’d opened my eyes I wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep. With a resigned sigh I rolled out of bed and after I pulled on my unicorn slippers and grey fluffy robe, I made my way to the kitchen. The smell of coffee bought a smile to my face as I immediately headed for my mug to pour myself a cup of the stimulant to get my brain working.
Usually at this time, I could count on Sam, Steve and Tony to be up. The former two usually returning from their run, and the latter usually rolled out of bed in time to greet his husband. But I wasn’t surprised to be greeted by an empty living room. Dad and Steve would take the time to catch up, and Sam probably wouldn’t have gone for a run without the super soldier there to wake him up. With no one to cuddle, I finished my cup of coffee with a sigh and decided to go for a run. It was better than sitting around and doing nothing. I wondered if Sam would appreciate me waking him up to go with me…
//
‘If this is your way of apologising for waking me up at the ass-crack of dawn, then I forgive you.’ Sam murmured around a mouthful of pancakes.
‘Oh thank Thor, I never would’ve survived without your forgiveness.’ I teased from the stove—I’d already eaten mine, and we were nearing 8am now, which meant the rest of the team would be waking up soon, so I was making enough to feed everyone.
‘Morning Cap.’ My head snapped up to see Steve walking into the kitchen, dad shuffling a few feet behind him. I smiled when I saw that they were holding hands, and with Tony rubbing at his sleepy eyes, it was easy to deduce that it was only the super soldier’s guidance that was leading him forward.
‘Morning!’ I said cheerfully, placing the frying pan I’d now finished using into the sink and leaping into his arms. His free hand came to my back to hold me in place and I smiled wider when I noticed he hadn’t let dad go to hold me.
‘Morning Pumpkin.’ Steve chuckled and kissed my hair, ‘I see you dragged Sam out for a run.’
I glanced over my shoulder to see Sam falling asleep on the table, his head resting on his now empty plate.
‘I did. Woke up early and I didn’t wanna go alone.’ I explained, shaking my head fondly at the Falcon before turning back to the super soldier, ‘I’m glad you’re home.’
‘Me too, kiddo.’ Steve kissed my forehead and placed me gently on the floor, where I then moved to hug my dad.
‘Where’s your friend? I don’t remember seeing him last night.’ I commented as I plated up enough food to feed them both.
‘He’s still sleeping. He’s been slipping a lot since they removed the conditioning.’ The blonde explained, pulling out a chair and placing Tony onto his lap.
‘That’s not surprising, it must have taken a huge emotional toll on him.’ I said, placing two plates in front of them both and then coming back with a mug of coffee for dad and some orange juice for pop.
‘Thanks honey.’ Dad and Pop said together.
‘You’re welcome.’ I smiled, sipping from my fresh cuppa Joe.
It was much later that Steve’s friend made an appearance. At around noon as Bruce and I were dishing up our infamous homemade pasta dish to feed the whole team, he made his way into the living area, looking sleepy and uncertain. No one aside from me seemed to notice him lurking at the door, looking in at everyone settled at various points throughout the room: Steve and Tony were cuddled up on the love seat, Thor was chatting with Sam on the sofa, Tasha was sat on Clint’s lap at the dining table as they spoke in sign language and Bruce and I were putting the last touches on the meal without having to verbally communicate because we’d done it so many times. It hurt my heart to see him so lost and uncertain so when Bruce moved to place the two huge pots of pasta in the centre of the dining room table, I grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and slowly approached the soldier. As I approached, his attention snapped to me and the emotion in his stunningly blue eyes made me want to hug him and assure him that everything was going to be okay. I didn’t of course, as I didn’t know how he would react. Instead I handed him the beverage I was holding and placed my hand on his arm, ignoring his astonishment when I didn’t cringe away at the feeling of metal, and led him encouragingly to the seat next to Steve, knowing that was where he would be most comfortable.
By then, the rest of the team was sat around the table, Thor sitting next to Bruce, the god placing a kiss to his love’s cheek as a thanks for the meal and smiling softly when the scientist blushed. Tasha had shuffled into her own seat, but she and Clint were still holding hands and had their chairs close enough together that their legs were pressed together. Sam was sitting on the other side of Thor, trying not to glance at the elevator too often as he waited for the appearance of Pepper, the strawberry blonde would take the empty seat next to him when she arrived, which was also on the other side of Steve’s friend. I sat in my usual seat after I’d bought the garlic bread over, which was on the other side of my dad. Once everyone was seated—Pepper arrived after five minutes and settled in after kissing the Falcon in greeting—we all dug into the food.
Conversation flowed easily, as it always did, though I preferred to sit, listen and observe. I did chime in occasionally, but more often than not, I remained silent. Though, I wasn’t the only one—I didn’t hear Pop’s friend speak a single word throughout the meal, although he did eat three bowls of pasta, half a stick of garlic bread and he drank the bottle of water I gave him as well as the other two Pop had replaced for him. There was nothing wrong with being quiet, but I had a feeling that he wasn’t aware of the conversation happening around him at all. His eyes seemed unfocused as if he were somewhere else, and I found myself overcome with the desire to bring him out of it, to offer him something else to focus on, but I held back. I knew better than anyone that sometimes you just needed to work through things on your own, and being pushed only made you close up more. It had taken me years to open up enough to care about anyone again and to let anyone care about me. So I refused to rush his process, besides I didn’t know him, the one better suited for looking out for the mysterious soldier was Pop’s—he knew him best.
//
After about six months Steve’s friend seemed to settle into the tower, at least to a point. He ran with Steve and Sam in the mornings, ate breakfast with the team, worked out with Thor or Pop’s, hung out in the lab with Tony and Bruce, and he ate dinner with us every night too. He seemed to be developing friendships with everyone in the team, but he was of course most comfortable with Pop and Dad. I knew for a fact that Dad telling him that he didn’t blame him for killing his parents was a huge relief for the soldier. Pop had told me he’d fell to his knees in relief and Dad had fallen right with him, hugging him close until he was ready to get up. That had been a turning point in their relationship, and now more often than not if the super soldier was anywhere, he’d be with either of my parents.
It was a relief to see him smiling, well it wasn’t so much of a smile, more of an upturn of his lips, but it was nice to see that paired with his brilliant blue eyes sparkling with mirth instead of the uncertainty that had shone in them when he’d joined us all those months ago. He teased Pop’s constantly, and developed a kindred banter with Sam that both insisted was an arch nemesis relationship, but we all knew the truth. He always had a smile for everyone and those he wasn’t comfortable with, he was polite.
The only member of the team that he didn’t seem to get close to was me. I couldn’t really place all the blame on him—I avoided him as much as he seemed to avoid me. It was ridiculous really, but every time he was near me I just couldn’t concentrate on anything. My mind went blank and my heart rate picked up, so to avoid what would most likely be beyond embarrassing interactions that I would never hear the end of from the team, I evaded him. I was sure he wasn’t eluding me for the same reasons, but I hadn’t really given it much thought. Honestly, I didn’t think anyone had even noticed that we’d never even spoken a word to each other in the past six months, and that was perfectly fine with me. Why you ask? Because if he spoke directly to me in that deep, Brooklyn accented voice, I might just die of a cardiac arrest. So this was the way it had to be for now, I was sure my apparent crush would go away at some point, but I had a feeling it wouldn’t be anytime soon.
‘Happy Christmas Eve!’ I grinned as I walked into the common area, yelling the greeting to everyone where they were settled in to watch a film in the living room.
‘Happy Christmas Eve!’ Dad responded with as much enthusiasm, Pop shaking his head fondly at his husband.
‘Come on Pumpkin, we’re just about to start watching a movie.’ Pop’s said and I made my way to slide underneath Pop’s right arm while Dad was curled up to his left.
‘I love this movie.’ I mumbled as the opening scenes of Home Alone 2 started playing on the T.V.
‘We know you do, ya filthy animal.’ Clint teased, though everyone erupted into laughter when a cushion hit him in the face with an oomph with a wave of my hand.
I laughed with everyone else, but I couldn’t help my gaze from lingering on the other super soldier sat on one of the armchairs to the left of me. His eyes were sparkling in amusement and the tension that had been present when he’d first arrived at the tower was nowhere to be seen. His hair was pulled back in a bun, which helped to show off his face, and the grey Henley he was wearing stretched wonderfully across his arms and his abdomen. He was gorgeous of course, but he also looked calm and relaxed and it was beautiful. I forced myself to look away before he or anyone caught me staring and focused on the movie.
I sunk further in to Pop’s side, the warmth that surrounded me making me sleepy and content. I remember reaching out for Dad’s hand as Kevin McAllister arrived at Duncan’s Toy Chest, and then I fell into the darkness.
//
I awoke to voices around me, and it took me a moment to recognise who was speaking and what was going on. The first thing I registered was that I was being lifted and held by someone who was very warm. I couldn’t help the happy hum that fell from my lips as I snuggled closer and mumbled something unintelligible. I felt whoever was holding me chuckle lightly and a small smile settled on my face at the sound. I felt myself falling back into the darkness but before I could surrender completely, the talking started again.
‘Careful you don’t drop her.’ That was Pop’s voice, which was confusing because if he wasn’t the one holding me, who was?
‘Watch it, punk, I’m easily twice as strong as you, and I would never drop her.’ He replied softly, but the soft rumble underneath my ear assured me that he was the one holding me, as did the coolness emanating from his metallic arm.
If I had been more conscious I probably would have frozen and fully woken up at that moment. But for whatever reason, I settled further into him and further into sleep. I dreamt about the ocean, rolling in and crashing against the sand. The moonlight reflected on the waves and lit up the whole area enough that I could see someone standing close enough to the tide that the water brushed over his toes. I walked towards him, apparently my subconscious recognised him, and just as I reached out my hand to entwine with his—he faded away into the night air.
When I woke up the next day, I didn’t remember the dream, but I did feel the ache in my heart as if something was slipping away from me.
//
My eyes snapped open at six am on the dot on Christmas Day, and after asking JARVIS who was awake in the tower, I practically sprinted from the bedroom to Tony and Steve’s room. I had a cardboard box about the size of an A4 piece of paper tucked under my arm—it was wrapped of course—and it was my present for the two men who I’d come to think of as my parental figures. I was a little nervous about giving it to them, so I thought it best to do it now, before anyone else was around. After a quick knock on their door and pausing for five seconds to give them time to move from any compromising positions, I entered the room.
‘MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!’ I screeched and launched myself at the foot of the bed, careful not to ruin the present I’d bought.
‘Merry Christmas Pumpkin,’ Pop’s said with a smile and a ruffle of my hair.
I swatted him away but gave them both a hug, before settling in between them, but facing them rather than being in the middle against the headboard like they were sitting. I crossed my legs and bit my lip nervously. This present… it was big.
‘What’s wrong honey?’ Dad’s voice was gentle and he shuffled forward enough to squeeze my hand comfortingly.
‘I have a present for you both. Well I have more for you under the tree, but this one is for the both of you and I wanted to give it to you in private because it’s well… it’s serious.’ I explained, barely remembering to breathe as I rushed to get my words out, ‘I want you to know that you can say no, I put this together because I want you both to know how much you mean to me.’
Pop’s and Dad looked a mixture of confused and soft as the super soldier took the present from me, tearing away the paper for my dad to gently remove the lid. I held my breath when I saw them stare at the top paper in shock and I had to force myself not to start rambling an explanation and an assurance that they didn’t have to sign them. But the rational side of me told me that this was a lot to process and silence didn’t have to be a bad thing.
‘Is this real?’ Pop’s asked, his eyes were glassed over with tears and I felt my own reciprocate as I replied, ‘yes. It’s real. I had Pepper help me draw them up.’
‘Honey,’ Dad’s voice was clogged with emotion and I had to hold back a sob at the love I could see shining in both pairs of eyes.
‘I understand if you don’t want to. It’s a lot of responsibility, I know, but I’ve come to see you both as my dad’s and how much I love you won’t change if you decide you don’t want to sign.’ I picked at an imaginary piece of lint on the comforter, too scared to meet their eyes.
‘Pumpkin, we would be honoured to officially adopt you.’ Pop’s assured me, scooping me up and placing me in between them so they could both hug me.
‘Of course we would.’ Dad agreed, kissing my temple.
‘I love you both so much.’ I murmured quietly, tears streaming down my face as my body fought for an outlet for all of the emotions that were running through me, ‘I don’t say it enough, but I do.’
‘We love you too, honey.’ Dad and Pop’s squeezed me tighter and for a long time we just stayed there, in a cocoon of love as we all cried tears of happiness and gratitude for being blessed with this moment, and this relationship of fathers and daughter.
//
Everyone else woke up at around ten, all sluggishly making their way to the kitchen where Pops and I were preparing breakfast while Dad sat on the counter, occasionally tasting some bacon or pancake batter and stealing kisses from his husband.
‘Merry Christmas beautiful people.’ I grinned, saluting them with my glass of orange juice and champagne.
‘Ugh oh.’ Clint said deadpan, ‘how many of those has she had?’
‘Only two,’ I pouted, not knowing that Pops was holding up five fingers behind me.
Everyone chuckled but took their seats at the dining table anyway. I plopped myself rather ungracefully on Bruce’s lap after Dad and Pops waved me away when I offered to bring in the food. Bruce just chuckled and placed a hand on my waist to avoid me falling, and Thor lifted my feet and placed them on his lap.
‘Do you know, I really think that you’re adorable, you know like cuddly?’ I said, taking a sip and not noticing everyone else watching with expressions of amusement and fondness, ‘but also I think that the Hulk is pretty too.’
‘What?’ Bruce squeaked and I let out a rather un-ladylike whelp when he nearly dropped me in his surprise, but thankfully he caught me in time.
‘It’s true! I haven’t told you before because I didn’t wanna make you upset or uncomfortable but I think the Hulk is pretty.’ I said, taking another sip of my drink, I lowered my voice to a whisper that everyone could still definitely hear, ‘I think it’s because he’s green and that reminds me of nature, which is also really pretty.’
A round of chuckles erupted around the table but it was the smell of bacon that caught my interest. I placed my drink onto the table and grabbed a couple of rashers and munched on them happily. I offered some to the still shocked Bruce, but he shook his head politely.
‘I can’t believe she’s this drunk on five glasses. They’re only tiny flutes and mostly orange juice!’ The hunky super soldier exclaimed to no one in particular, his eyes sparkling in amusement. I hid my blush behind a handful of strawberries. Damn super soldier looking like an Adonis god and making my heart beat out of my chest.
‘What did you just say, honey?’ Dad’s eyes were sparkling wickedly and I frowned in confusion as I tried to remember what I said last.
‘Hulk is pretty?’ I offered.
‘No, no.’ he waved his hand, looking over to Sexy Bun next to Pops, ‘after that.’
‘Dad, I didn’t say anything after that.’ I chuckled taking another sip of my drink, ‘and I thought Pops was supposed to be the one with bad hearing.’
The table went silent in that moment, but I dipped my strawberry into my cream and munched with a satisfied hum.
‘What did she just—?’ Tasha started but cut off at the sudden emotion that clogged her throat at the look on Steve and Tony’s faces. They both looked absolutely… honoured and grateful. There was no other way to describe it.
‘I’m confused… you have a daughter?’ Sexy Bun was looking at Steve in confusion.
I grinned big and happily exclaimed, ‘that’s me!’
‘Yes it is, honey.’ Dad chuckled fondly, and with all the grace in the world, I managed to lift myself up and over the table to plop myself in pops’ lap. I giggled at the feeling of flying as Dad lifted my feet onto his lap, both of them smiling at me fondly.
‘That’s our daughter.’ Pops kissed my forehead.
‘The lightweight.’ Dad agreed and laughed at my pout.
‘I’m not a lightweight.’ I mumbled around a bite of pancake.
‘Of course you aren’t little one.’ Thor’s voice rumbled in amusement and affection, while everyone else murmured their agreement.
//
Later on that night after all the presents had been opened and the left overs from Christmas dinner had been consumed, we all settled into the common room, each of us doing different things. Dad was showing Pops how to use the new phone I’d gifted him; the super soldier was completely overwhelmed and the billionaire was shifting between teasing his husband and patiently explaining each function to him. Bruce was sitting on Thor’s lap, his head on the demi-god’s shoulder as he snored softly. The God of thunder was quietly talking to Pepper, the red head in a similar predicament as Sam’s head was on her lap, him having been asleep for as long as the scientist. Both Thor and Pepper alternated between their conversation and looking down at their significant others in complete adoration. Clint and Tasha had retired about five minutes prior, the archer practically carrying the assassin to their bedroom after the redhead mentioned another present she wanted to give him in private. I was sat on the loveseat with Bucky, both of us just quietly observing everyone. I couldn’t tell you how we’d ended up on the same seat, sat so close that our upper thighs were pressed solidly against each other’s, but here we were. It should have been awkward, seeing as I’d never even spoke to the man, but it wasn’t. For the first time his presence wasn’t making my heart rate erratic, my palms weren’t sweating and I wasn’t struggling for words. I was completely calm, but it was a different level of calmness that I’d never felt around anyone else before, I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but I didn’t want to.
‘This has to be my favourite day of the year, every year.’ I mused, looking up at Bucky so he would know I was talking to him.
I saw the surprise in his eyes when they met mine, and my heart skipped a beat at meeting his stare.
He cleared his throat before he replied, somewhat shyly, ‘after everything that happened when I fell, I never believed I’d have the opportunity to be surrounded by family again, especially at Christmas. So I know exactly what you mean, the time of year amplifies the love.’
We shared a soft smile and I was just about to ask him a question about his Christmas’ before the war when my chest felt like it was burning. A whimper of pain fell from my lips, and without even thinking about it I lifted up my pyjama top and stared at the words that were now inked to the left of my chest in shock, disbelief and… relief. I jolted in surprise when Bucky’s metal hand caressed the words with such tenderness that I felt my eyes sheen over with tears as I looked up to him. He was staring at my soulmate mark with such gratitude, adoration and shock that I couldn’t help but mirror when I caught my mark on the forearm of his flesh. My fingers reached out without my permission and traced the letters, revelling in the spark that shot up my arm, in the warmth of his skin and the way the letters were bumpy against his flesh.
My eyes met his again when he gently lowered my top and took my hands in his. I held on tightly, overwhelmed with what had happened. I never thought I’d meet my soulmate, and even after I’d convinced myself that I didn’t deserve someone, a small part of me had always hoped. Hoped that I’d find someone who would love me the same way my mother loved my father. The same way my dads loved each other. I just never believed it would happen, and I hadn’t let myself indulge in the idea since my parents had passed when I was a child. But now, I couldn’t deny it. I couldn’t deny the affection, adoration and love that I felt for the man in front of me. I couldn’t deny the intensity; I couldn’t deny the desire to solidify our bond, to make our hearts one for always.
‘I lost hope that I would find you years ago.’ Bucky admitted in a whisper, his metal hand wiping away the tears that fell down my cheeks.
‘Me too.’ I told him, mirroring his volume. By some miracle, no one had taken notice of our conversation and I wasn’t about to be the reason that our bubble got burst.
‘I knew it was you.’ His fingers ran through my hair and he smiled as my eyes fluttered at his touch.
‘Why didn’t you say anything?’
‘Because you seemed wary of me, I didn’t want to push it and make you more skittish around me, especially if I was wrong.’ He explained, his hands returning to holding mine.
‘I wasn’t afraid of you, if that’s what you were thinking. I wanted to talk to you, it’s just every time I tried, I couldn’t get any words out and eventually I stopped trying because I didn’t want you to think I was a stuttering idiot incapable of speaking to you.’ I blushed but felt my eyes soften at the sound of his chuckle and the mirth in his beautiful eyes.
‘Oh, doll, I would never think that,’ he promised, his eyes trailing over my face and darkening when they reached my lips. They started to tingle under the attention and it took every ounce of will I held not to lean forward right there. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to, but I had a feeling if we started, we wouldn’t stop until the bond was solidified and I didn’t want to do that in the presence of my family.
‘We should…’ I trailed off, unable to finish my sentence, but it didn’t matter he knew what I meant anyway.
‘Yes we should, sugar.’ He winked, the dilation of his pupils made my knees weak, ‘I’ll go first and you follow in a few minutes.’ He squeezed my hand and after a wave and shout of ‘goodnight’ to the room, he was gone.
It felt like time was mocking me and purposefully ticking by as slow as possible as I waited for the clock to show that five minutes had passed, once it had, I had to physically force myself not to leap eagerly out of my chair and casually shuffle over to my dads and give them each a kiss on the cheek. After that I waved to everyone else and practically sprinted when I’d turned the corner out of sight. When I’d reached the corridor that our bedrooms were on, I had a millisecond to wonder where he would be when his bedroom door opened and he gently but firmly snatched my wrist and pulled me inside before closing and locking the door with a click. I couldn’t tell you who moved first, but I can tell you that as soon as our lips met, I felt… complete. Our lips moved together effortlessly, as if we’d kissed a million times before and the sparks that seemed to echo throughout my body at his touch made me moan. He lifted me up, my legs wrapping around his waist out of instinct and I felt myself shudder when his metal arm slipped under my top and caressed the warmth of my back. My own hands moved to his hair, grateful that he’d removed the hair tie as my fingers moved through the silky strands without interference. I both felt and heard him groan when I gently scratched my nails over his scalp.
He gently lowered me onto the bed, his body resting perfectly against mine as his hands worked to remove my top, his lips following and kissing each inch of skin as it was revealed. He lingered on my soulmate mark for a moment longer, placing an especially tender kiss to the marked skin before removing my top completely.
‘You are so beautiful, and all mine.’ He growled and my thighs clenched around his waist in response.
He smirked in satisfaction at my reaction but I paid it no mind as I reached forward and practically clawed at his Henley, desperate for the feel of his skin against mine. Once all of our clothes were removed and we were moving together, I knew right then and there that I had been wrong about me not deserving a soulmate. Bucky showed me how ignorant I was without having to use words. It was in how he touched me; gentle and deliberate. It was in how he looked at me as if I were the most important person in the world to him. It was in the way our bodies, our souls recognised each other and eradicated any feeling that wasn’t contentedness. I had been wrong about not deserving a soulmate, another half, a best friend, because I knew despite the minimal time we’d spent together and the minimal knowledge we had of one another, I had all of that and more in Bucky.
As our bodies reached a climax together in a myriad of fireworks, I couldn’t help but think; I’d never been happier to be wrong.
//
‘Good morning, doll.’ Bucky’s husky voice bought me out of my slumber gently, but I couldn’t help but snuggle closer to him and his warmth, desperately trying to chase the sleep I’d been pulled out of.
‘Morning.’ I mumbled against his chest, relaxing even further into him as his meal fingers began drawing shapes into the bottom of my back.
‘We should get up soon.’ He said, kissing my hair.
‘Why?’ I wondered, moving so I was directly on top of him now, my hands curling around his shoulders and my head directly above his heart, ‘I’m perfectly content right here.’
He chuckled and the sound was fond, ‘Me too, sugar, but if we don’t move soon people are gonna start wonderin’ where we are, and I personally wouldn’t like them to find out about us by walkin’ in and seeing us naked in bed together.’
‘I know I should care about that, but I’m simply too comfortable and warm right now to process the validity of your comment.’ I mumbled, nuzzling into his neck and sighing happily at his scent. He smelled like sugar and spice—it was addicting.
He laughed again and I felt my lips curl up into a grin at the sound, unable to stop myself for placing a chaste kiss at the side of his neck, ‘I love that sound.’
Bucky didn’t say anything but he kissed my hair and held me a little tighter, his hand moving up and down my spine, causing me to practically melt into him. I was just on the cusp of sleep again when he sat up with me wrapped around him and sat me on the edge of the bed. I grumbled and rolled myself up in the sheets as I tried to fight the cold that wrapped around me without him close.
‘Come on, sweet thing,’ He sat me up again and caressed the side of my face, smiling gently when my eyes met his. I puckered my lips for a kiss and he leaned forward and pecked my lips softly, pulling back when I tried to deepen it with a chuckle.
‘Easy, baby, if you start that we’ll be in this bedroom all day.’ He kissed my forehead and my lips again.
‘Okay.’ I gave in standing up and stretching, when I looked over to him I saw his blue eyes had darkened to molten, ‘you’ll have to hold that thought for later, honey. I’m gonna go shower and then get dressed.’ I kissed him goodbye and slipped his discarded Henley from the previous night on before darting to my room across the hall.
It was strange; we were only twenty feet apart at the most, but my heart felt like it was about to burst out of my chest, an invisible pull willing me back to him. This must have been what Dad was talking about. If this was how it felt, I had no idea how my Dad and Pop were able to stay apart for weeks at a time, because I was already yearning to go back to him.
//
After I’d showered and pulled on some sweatpants, Bucky’s shirt and a sweatshirt I ventured out of my room with my hair still wet. It wasn’t like me not to dry my hair immediately, but I favoured getting back to my soulmate over spending the time getting my hair dry. He wasn’t in his room anymore, so I headed to the common room and found him sitting in the loveseat, quietly chatting to Pop and Sam who were sat side by side on the sofa across from him. Pepper was nowhere to be seen, but that wasn’t surprising—she often rose late on the rare days she had off. Dad was making breakfast and kissed my forehead as I moved past him to grab my mug and pour myself a cup of coffee. I noticed that Thor and Bruce were sat at the dining table with Clint and Tasha across from them, both couples speaking quietly to their partners. Without giving it much thought I walked over to the loveseat and cuddled into Bucky’s side, his metallic arm lifting without prompt and allowing me to move as close as possible. His hand came to rest on my waist, his thumb rubbing circles into my hip and making me practically melt into a state of relaxation into his side.
I lifted my mug to my lips and took a gulp before resting the cup against his thigh as I snugged into his chest, inhaling his scent. Bucky’s lips met my damp hair and I felt his chest rumble underneath my ear as he mumbled, ‘you smell good, Sugar.’
‘So do you.’ I sighed, my eyes falling closed.
We’d been so lost in each other that we hadn’t noticed the room fall deadly quiet. The only sounds coming from Bucky and I, as well as the sizzling of the bacon on the frying pan. Tasha and Clint weren’t surprised, Thor and Bruce were a mixture of amused and astonished, but Tony, Steve and Sam were downright shocked. The latter was staring at the newly bonded couple with their jaws hanging open, and their eyes wider than they had ever been. Their surprise was understandable, of course, as before this moment the pair had never been seen speaking a word to each other, and now they moved, spoke, and looked at each other with the same intensity and adoration as each bonded couple on the team. It was a few more minutes of the team observing the couple snuggling together, looking more relaxed than anyone had ever seen them, before the shock seemed to subside and allow for a vocalised reaction.
Tony cleared his throat and said, ‘um, honey?’
‘Yeah dad?’ I responded, too relaxed to open my eyes.
‘When did you plan on telling us that you and Bucky were soulmates?’ His voice was casual and that was purposeful; he didn’t want her to get the wrong idea if he allowed his shock to leak into his voice.
‘Now?’ I said sheepishly, peeking an eye open and burrowing further into Bucky in an attempt to hide when I saw everyone was staring, ‘we found out last night.’
‘We would have said something, but everything happened so fast from there.’ Bucky said, sounding sheepish himself, but his hold on me didn’t waver, if anything he held me a little tighter and I felt a small sigh of contentedness leave my mouth in response.
‘Well,’ Clint stood up, pulling out a piece of paper from his back pocket and unfolding it to it’s full A4 size, ‘Bruce and Thor had Christmas day.’
A frown of confusion formed on my face as everyone groaned in disappointment.
‘You couldn’t have waited until new years eve?’ Sam complained, but it was all in good fun, ‘The pot was up to ten grand, Pep and I could have rolled around in that money.’
‘Well it looks like I and Bruce will have the honours.’ Thor announced proudly, kissing his mate chastely but passionately.
‘You were betting on us gettin’ together?’ Bucky clarified.
‘Yup.’ Clint nodded as he returned to the room, handing the demi god and scientist a black metallic box.
‘For how long?’ I asked, bewildered.
‘It was after about a week of Bucky being here, after Tasha noticed the looks you were both stealing at each other.’ Pop admitted.
‘You and dad were in on this?’
‘We were, Pumpkin.’ Pops said, looking slightly guilty.
‘You punk.’ Bucky shook his head in mock disapproval.
‘I know, we feel terrible about it.’ Dad said, standing behind his husband and placing a hand on his shoulder.
I gave him a look and he admitted, ‘okay no we don’t, we just thought you two would be perfect together and we were routing for you to be happy!’
Pops nodded in agreement, entwining his fingers with the billionaire’s.
Bucky looked down at me, mirth shining in his eyes at the situation. I smothered a laugh behind my mug as I took a sip, giving my soulmate a slight nod as I told him he could decide what to do. He sent me a secret wink before fixing the team with his scariest Winter Soldier glare, and to my amusement everyone except for Tasha and Thor stiffened in concern for what was going to happen next. He had them squirming for a few more minutes before he let the laughter slip, I joined him in an instant, beyond amused at the annoyed and relieved expression on almost every face in the common room.
‘It’s fine.’ I shrugged once we recovered.
Bucky took my empty mug from me without me having to ask and placed it onto the side table beside the love seat. My hand entwined with his once the task was complete and I blushed when he placed a kiss to the back of my hand, his eyes staring into mine with such intensity that I felt my heart skip a beat.
‘Well I was right.’ Pops said proudly, ‘they are perfect for each other.’
‘They sure are, Stevie.’ Dad agreed, placing a kiss to his husband’s cheek before returning to the kitchen to finish breakfast. Although, it was more of a brunch now, but he didn’t care. All he cared about was the content and happy expressions both his daughter and Bucky were wearing. He felt something settle inside him at the sight—it was about time they both got their happily ever after and Tony couldn’t be happier that they’d found it with each other.

Tmw you get a notification in email that your coffee has arrived at the same moment that the mailman closes your mailbox and drives off.
Yall this coffee smells so good before you even open the bag!!

I actually sat there for a few minutes just inhaling dirty bean funk off the bag before jumping up and realizing...AH! I must brew!!!

Longest 7 minutes of my life🥺🥺😭😭
But man did my whole ass house stank of them chocolate beans of holy goodness. I literally caught myself pacing the livingroom, coffee mug in hand as I listened to the soothing sounds of my coffeemaker chugging happily away, anxious and excited and....frigging thirsty beyond all reason.
Why did I set it to strong brew...I could have had it 3 minutes sooner if I had just god regular. But no, it's worth the wait I keep telling myself. Knowing, patience is a virtue. (Unfortunately I'm a pisces and that just doesn't sit well when I'm excited about something. Also, true to pisces form I may have cried a little when I went to check and it'd only brewed 8 of 12 cups)
Finally...the brew is complete. I pour a cup, only to promptly burn tf outta my entire mouth.
But finally, I remembered what mom always said, blow first, sip later. And...holy crap!?!?! This is the first coffee I've ever had that I would actually drink black. And yes, I did drink the first sip black.
It's slightly nutty, but not sour, not bitter. It's got this interesting almost tobacco smell to it? Like, warm roasted tobacco in a field, not cigarettes or cigars.
I put my go to coffee creamer in it,caramel macchiato? Just enough to cool it down some and the caramel didn't overpower the coffee at all. It complements the coffee flavor, making it slightly softer but still very much prominent and absolutely fucking delicious!!Ah!!
I could go on for ages about just how amazing jacksepticeye's coffee is...but if you'll excuse me I have a burnt mouth and a cup of Java to attend to☺☺☺

[ sakura’s secret ] rating: m
//last update for the week! i’ll be inactive this weekend as far as posting content, but i’ll hopefully have the next chapter out sunday night/monday . nothing too exciting this time, just transitioning ~
previous | next
Frozen, crunchy grass, minimal rays of golden light, piles of leaves from dead trees -- November was in full swing. Mornings always bit with the intentions of upcoming winter, but Sakura couldn’t feel the chilly bites of realization anymore.
She was drunk on Sasuke and high on life. Between her school work, spending time studying and Sasuke, she was in a continuous cycle. Her friends still didn’t know about Sasuke, her family didn’t know about him, but neither did Sasuke’s friends or family know about Sakura.
A few more months, Sakura kept reminding herself. Only a few more months until her eighteenth birthday, and maybe then she would be looked at like an adult. A few more months.
“Don’t forget that we will be having family over soon,” Mebuki reminded from across the table.
When Sakura’s jade eyes found her mother’s glazed over look, she offered a tired smile. “Yeah, I won’t forget.” But her answer didn’t seem to calm her mother’s facial expression, nor ease it up at all.
“Everything okay, mom?”
Mebuki came to cross her fingers under her chin, balancing her head in place; it was such a Sasuke thing whenever Sakura watched anyone else but him do this.
“You’ve been acting different lately. Staying out late every night, avoiding questions, going out and not coming home over the weekend. It just seems a little odd to me,” Mebuki finally deadpanned, her voice as dry as a desert.
Sakura frowned before an unsettling feeling crawled up her spine. Had she really noticed all of that?
“I’m enjoying my senior year with my friends.”
“And what friends would that be?” Mebuki retorted.
Sakura was taken aback, her eyes wide with fear and her lips parting. She was hanging out with Naruto and Ino, of course. Who else?
“Naruto and Ino,” Sakura responded before taking a bite of her breakfast and washing it down with a swig of ice cold water.
She nodded her head once before glancing out the winter to their dining room. The trees were all bare now, and only one or two birds still hung around, braving out the changing weather. The sky was painted in golden hues of oranges and yellows, due to the early hour, while gray clouds began to come in from the east.
“The last time I saw Ino was back in September, Sakura.”
Sakura began to count the days, backtracking exactly when Ino had been over the same time as her mother. Throughout all her years of growing up, Ino was normally attending family dinners, outings, and simple movie nights with both Sakura and her mother. Now all Mebuki would come home to was an empty house and a text from her daughter: I’ll be home late. Studying.
“She was here on Halloween,” she responded quietly.
Again, Mebuki nodded once. It was entirely unlike her to push a subject for this long, but then again, a mother’s concern was the greatest of all.
The topic was dying down, until her very next question.
“So who’s the boy you’ve been seeing?” She asked with a gentle smile and tired eyes.
Her heart was now soaring, her fingers trembling slightly and her body temperature rising. She couldn’t possibly confide in her mother just yet. Sakura promised herself that she would introduce the two of them, not as Sakura’s sensei, but something more. Just not right now. Later.
Time was against her the longer she thought about her answer. It was already too long to use her usual excuse of ‘nothing’ and the moment her mother shifted in her seat, Sakura found her eyes watching the ticking clock behind her mother’s golden hair.
“Oh, him? He’s nothing special,” she lied, but her mother saw right through it. “Not special enough to bring home, yet.”
It hurt her to say it, because Sasuke was very special to her. He made he feels things she never felt in her life before, brought laughter and a peace of mind to her.
“If you keep seeing him, someday he’ll have to meet your parents,” Mebuki reminded her.
Sakura felt her cheeks flush -- this was the first time she had ever talked about boys with her mother, other than the simple “He’s cute!” or “Look at him!”
This was a matter of getting caught now. They would need to rethink their strategy from now on.
“Got it,” Sakura stood from the table and walked her plate to the sink. She began to rinse it off and wash it before rinsing it once more. Her mind was like a whirlwind of thoughts now; would their terms of meeting and hanging out last, or were they on their way to getting caught?
In her furry of overthinking, the plate slipped from her hands, missed landing on the counter and shattered against the java hardwood floors. She didn’t feel any sort of anger slip through her mind, she only wanted to cry and scream.
“Sakura!” Mebuki was up and by her side, comforting Sakura’s frozen form. “Did any get you?”
She couldn’t answer, wouldn’t answer. Instead, she began to pick up the pieces with her fingers, her eyes glassy while her body was completely numb. Thoughts of no longer carrying on with her secret relationship tainted her mind, made her feel absolutely angry and scared and exhausted.
“Stop, darling. I’ll sweep it up,” her mother comforted her, wrapping her arms around her before pulling her away. “Just go get ready for school.”
Sakura simply nodded her pretty head before stepping around the glass, careful to avoid the smallest of pieces. Her throat was extremely dry, her eyes burning from tears that threatened to fall, and her body tensed up and uncomfortable.
This was what she signed up for with Sasuke when she confirmed that this was what she wanted. A life of living in secrets, unable to confide in her mother or Ino, Naruto included.
As happy as Sasuke made her, also came a downfall of living in the shadows.
“Only a few more months,” Sakura promised herself, promised Sasuke, and all of the people she was close to. “A few more months.”
.
.
.
November was turning out to be a dreadful month. Classes were slow, her time spent with Sasuke was kept to a minimum, and her mother had been breathing down her neck.
She felt caged when she began to return home after school. She missed staying late with Sasuke, doing her own thing while he finished up with work, yet they didn’t mind the silence that filled the space between the two of them. They worked hand in hand with one another; his quiet, sarcastic side was something that Sakura had taken a liking to.
Whenever she did see Sasuke though, she could see the ghost of a smirk on his lips. Their eyes would meet almost every other five minutes during class, hidden messages passing through obsidian to viridian, and as much as it killed Sakura to remain seated and not jump from her seat, she stayed like a good girl.
Ever since she began her fling with Sasuke, she found that her grades had been higher than ever. She was paying attention to detail more so than not, her studies came easier to her and she felt more determined to get into medical school and prove to everyone that she was working hard and not just goofing off; there was just something about Sasuke that made her determined not to give up.
Sakura set her pen down on her desk and stood from her seat. Sasuke’s head lifted only to meet her stare and when she began to walk towards him, he sat back comfortably.
She could only focus on his lips, the way they sat, thin and soft.
With her arm extended, she passed her finished test over towards him and offered a gentle smile, her eyes twinkling with admiration. Sasuke raised a single eyebrow, the corner of his lips raising before she turned on her heel and headed back towards her desk.
A pair of ruby eyes caught her attention; a pale face with eyebrows pulled together, her red hair flaring out wildly on one side; Karin stared her down. Sakura didn’t falter at the eye contact, only continued her walk by her until she reached her seat and sat back down. It looked like her classmates were all pretty close to finishing now, but in her spare time, she pulled her folder that held scholarships and left off where she had started.
Her mind felt cluttered lately, but whenever she looked up to give her eyes a break, she caught Sasuke’s stare, remembering the way he told her how focused she looked when she would write. Sakura could feel her cheeks dust over with a light pink before looking back down.
Oh, how he still had that effect on her and oh, how she adored those deep, dark eyes of his.
.
.
.
She felt her days begin to blur together, and as much as Sakura hated to admit it, she was beginning to grow exhausted with each passing day of her senior year. It was a constant barrage of school, school wook, avoiding curious eyes and wandering rumors, trying to maintain a breaking friendship with Naruto and Ino, scholarships, and wringing her mind with how her and Sasuke could keep seeing each other.
Ever since their kiss, it felt like everything had began to fall apart and these were the things she thought about late at night. Sakura didn’t feel like going out to parties anymore, plus her friends quit inviting her the moment she began to push them to the side and focus on other things.
The music that played through her headphones soothed her anxious mind, but it didn’t solve her problems. Finally, her phone vibrated and when her eyes dropped to look at the screen, she felt an instant wave of life wash over her.
Come see me.
It was Sasuke with his fake name splayed across the screen. Those simple three words set fireworks launching through her mind, set her body on fire.
It’s passed two. Shouldn’t you be asleep?
She waited not even a minute, and a message pulled through on her phone.
I could ask you the same thing. Come outside.
Sakura frowned before unplugging her headphones and throwing them to the side. She pulled on Sasuke’s university hoodie and a pair of winter boots before making her way over to her window. The familiar cars that lined the streets were the only things she could see, but then her eyes landed on Sasuke’s familiar black car.
Though she felt her cheeks light up and her eyes widen and her heart began to rush in her chest, she also knew that there would be a time -- soon -- that they would need to discuss what was transpiring between the two of them.
Instead of standing in her window, gawking at him, she made her way down the stairs -- she removed her boots, knowing they would make clonky sounds while making her way down -- but the moment she opened the front door, it was like ice and venom biting into her skin.
“Fucking cold,” she hissed, her eyes squinting to fight the bitter breeze.
Her feet carried her to Sasuke and the moment she pulled the door open and crawled in, she was greeted by tired eyes and messy hair.
“Hi,” she breathed out, taken aback by how handsome he was, especially when he didn’t try.
Sasuke didn’t respond, only look at her with those tired gray eyes of his. The longer she looked at him, the more she could see the light that had once been lit there, slowly diminish to a flickering flame that threatened to die out at any moment.
“What’s wrong?” She asked, one of her knees came to rest against her chest, while she sat on her other leg. The simple furrow of his eyebrows made her lean closer, and when she thought he was going to answer, his hands were on her cheeks, and his lips pressed against hers.
He tasted and felt good against her lips again, and the longer he held her there, the drunker she became off his intoxicating scent. Her heart ached for him, yearned for him; Halloween was their last shared kiss, and now here they were, meeting late in the hour, both tired and hurting.
Sakura felt it through his kiss just how much he needed her, missed her, desired her.
“It’s so annoying,” he murmured while her lips were still against his. “So fucking annoying.”
Sasuke pulled away slightly, but his forehead came to rest against hers, and Sakura fought back the scalding tears that threatened to fall. She swallowed hard and closed her eyes, breathing in his smoky scent.
“What’s wrong?” She asked quietly in the darkness of his car. His hands still held onto her cheeks, firm but soft, and her hands came to hold his forearms.
It took him a moment to answer, but when he did, he pulled away and looked into her eyes. His thick, black lashes hooding eyes that told stories -- stories that were still untold.
She slowly let go of his arms and his hands slid down her cheeks, one completely dropping while the other ran through her messy, pastel tresses.
“You’re different,” his voice was hoarse and his eyes dropped to watch his fingers twirl through her silk locks.
“I’m just tired,” Sakura tried to reason, but she knew Sasuke was smart, smart enough to see through her lies, but he remained quiet as his eyes stared right through her. “I’m okay, though. I really am.”
“Sakura.”
And there’s something about the way he says her name and how his eyes grow intense, like a roaring fire on the mountainside, or how a hurricane demolishes buildings in its wake. He’s a force to be reckoned with, and Sakura stands in the eye of the storm.
“I don’t want you to get in trouble.” She finally admits through sealed lips and eyes that gloss over with tears that won’t fall.
“I won’t,” he responds quickly. Sasuke is smart, witty, he’s clever and knows how to work around the system, she comes to realize. He’s young and he still has his moments that would look to be childish to the other instructors at the school, but he’s mature for his age and he’s got that going for him.
“We’ll work through it.” Sakura knows he means it, because his eyes shimmer with untold promises.
“Then what? What happens after that?” Sakura finds herself asking, her tone firm. It’s been something on her mind since November first, and here she is, awaiting the answer.
“We’ll find out,” he frowns but his gorgeous features never falter.
Sakura nods her head, and leans farther away from him. Her breathing begins to calm down now, and although she still has her concerns, she can trust him.
It was funny, Sakura thought, how a simple crush formed into something more over the course of a couple months. She never considered what would happen from there, but now that they were going to progress forward with this thing between them, she started to think of how things would be after she graduated from school.
“Now what?” She asks from her seat, her knee still pulled to her chest while her arms hug around her leg. Sakura finds that the quiet air had been filled with tension, and although they decided to work through it, there was still something amiss.
Sasuke’s smirk kick started her heart and when his eyes reflected the light from the stereo, Sakura frowned slightly. “How long do you have?”
Sakura shrugged, “my mom normally leaves for work around five in morning. Why?”
“We can go somewhere,” Sasuke started his car. The low hum of his engine started up, and as he put his car into first gear and started moving, Sakura latched her seatbelt over her chest. Of course, it didn’t go unnoticed by him.
“Where?” She asked as he shifted to second gear and the car began to move faster. She noticed that he kept it slow, noting that the roads would probably be icy due to the cold weather.
“You’ll see.”
Sakura kept her eyes on the road, watching as they drove by familiar houses and the playground she would play at when she was younger. They drove by her old school and Naruto’s house, passed the tree they shared their first kiss by, and finally on their way out of town. Sasuke followed the road that led through the hills; the trees bare and grass dead, the greenery that once hid this road was no more.
“Have you ever been up here?” He asked after a few moments of silence.
She watched her surroundings as they kept going, trying to find something familiar that she would notice, but to no avail. “No?”
“Good,” he replied, and just with that simple word, she felt chills creep through her body and his ghost of a kiss on her skin. She would never forget that feeling, how close he was, how his lips felt the first time he touched her.
When the car’s engine started to grow quiet, Sakura noticed that they were no longer heading up, but the road had leveled out. Now that she realized where exactly they were going, a smile painted itself on her lips.
He had taken her to one of the highest points in Konoha; a perch that looked over the city, but at night, the millions of lights that twinkled under the oncoming winter sky amazed Sakura.
Sasuke parked his car by the guard rail and Sakura simply couldn’t pull her eyes from the sight. The downtown part of Konoha was busy, she could tell, but when her eyes scanned towards the outskirts of the town, the lights began to dim. Viridian eyes searched for Sasuke’s condo, and when she couldn’t find it, they landed on her school.
“It’s so pretty,” she whispered, mostly to herself, but Sasuke scoffed.
“Have you never seen Konoha at night?”
“Not from up here,” she spoke through a dazed state of mind. From yellows, oranges, greens, reds, pinks, to blues, Konoha offered many different lights and the main road that cut straight through the city held multiple cars. “It’s so busy.”
“It’s always busy,” Sasuke retorted, and when Sakura glanced at him, she could see the reflections of all the millions lights in his eyes. “It’s peaceful up here, especially in the middle of summer.”
“Why’s that?”
“You’ll have to see for yourself,” he smirked.
Sakura shook her head before settling back and watching the busy road that held cars of all types, and watching lights either flicker on or off. The sky remained black throughout the night, and although she knew she should be at home and in bed, this was much better than a night filled with overthinking and restless sleep.
Time spent with Sasuke should’ve been forbidden, but they took it as a challenge, and together, they agreed that they would get around it.
“Hey, Sasuke?”
“Hn.”
“Will you teach me how to drive your car?”
A long pause, until he finally groaned, “maybe.”

While not know it dates back centuries and in the 12th century even became a chargeable item in India. Vetiver essential oil extract is made from vetiver grass by the distillation process.
For making the extract, first, cultivates its roots for two years and then harvest it for making its extract. Once its roots are ready for extraction, wash, dry and chop it and then soaked. Pharmaceuticals companies make their extract through the steam distillation of the plant’s roots. It has a significant role in Ayurveda because of its earthy aromatic essence. Its extract is an essential ingredient in perfumes, soaps, and cosmetics. It has relaxing soothing and grounding properties that’s why many peoples use it in holistic practices.
Insomnia is a condition when you fall asleep or not getting enough sleep. Vetiver oil can be topically used for massage on feet and toes and on the forehead or the neck and at the back. You may spray it on the pillow or shirt collar or inside the house for the aromatic purpose. This kind of usage provides you a calming effect and promote peaceful sleep by reducing anxious and angry feeling. The sedative properties present in its roots helps in dealing with this problem.
Vetiver oil is an excellent cicatrisant agent which help us eliminate the scars or dark spots on the skin. When a wound or burn is cured, dark marks forms on the skin which is dead tissue. As an excellent natural skin healer, it replaces the dead tissue with new tissue and also promotes its growth.
This is also useful for post-delivery stretch marks for pregnant women, fat cracks, after spots left by chicken pox and burns. It also helps remove dark spots in acne scarring. For this apply two to four drops vetiver oil diluted with coconut oil on the affected area.
You may use it topically. Because it is really thick, you may mix it with other oil like lavender oil or coconut oil for making it less dense. After it, apply the solution on your skin anywhere you like.
You may use it during bath by mixing vetiver oil in bathing water will greatly help you from stress relieving and other skin benefits. Because it is a good aromatherapy agent, you may use it in inhaler by distilling and vaporing it. It can used as healthy vape. 7 Playlists for a Day without Coffee or Sex, It’s all About You
Personally, no decent human being should ever go through the morning without at least one hearty cup of their favorite blend of morning java, but if it just isn’t your thing, or after that one cup, you need to power through your day, nothing speaks better to the mind, body and soul than music. Music speaks to the human spirit like nothing else can. It can alter your emotion with the simple change of 5 chords. It can lift your spirits, make you cry, fill you with rage for war, and soothe your soul. So, if you need to keep your pep up through the day without drowning in caffeine, the simplest way to complete this Herculean task is to create playlists for various times of the day to meet your unique needs.
Obviously, these lists are going to be diversified depending on whether you are male or female and your particular favorite genre of music. I like to think of myself as fairly open-minded and well-versed in all music styles from pop, rock, country, metal, punk, and rap and from every generation going back to the 60’s (No, I’m not that old, I’m just a music aficionado).
Breaking up the day, so that you’re always jamming to good tunes to get you through your workday, start your day with some lively wake-up and shake it up music that will put a smile on your face and get you ready for your day.
7-9 am
I Prevail: Blank Space - Don’t get me wrong, I used to jam out to Taylor’s Swift’s version, but once you’ve heard this version, sorry Taylor, there’s just no comparison, but don’t worry Taylor, you still made our lists. https://youtu.be/czb_CZfWko8
Gwyn Stefani: Holla Back Girl – Fun, cute video too! https://youtu.be/Kgjkth6BRRY
Rachel Platten: Fight Song – If you ever needed an inspirational song to get you going? Blare this one at level 10 and sing it out loud while either putting on your makeup ladies or (shaving – come on guys, you can do it.) https://youtu.be/xo1VInw-SKc
Skillet: Invincible – Rock it out and bang your head while you fix your hair. https://youtu.be/Qzw6A2WC5Qo
Iggy Azalea – Fancy: A white girl’s fairly good attempt at pop and rap mixture gets you dancing around the room while you are getting dressed and keeps you moving. https://youtu.be/O-zpOMYRi0w
Anna Kendrick – Cups: Made famous by Pitch Perfect, once really can’t help but smile and try to keep up with the hand motion and rhythm of this catchy tune; it will definitely keep you moving. https://youtu.be/cmSbXsFE3l8
Eminem- Til I Collapse: I don't need a Transformer to make me move to Eminem, he always gets my butt hustling in the morning with his sheer talent of wordplay, meaning, and rhythm. https://youtu.be/ytQ5CYE1VZw
Ed Sheeran – Castle on the Hill: Ed Sheeran has an iconic future ahead of him. He can do no wrong musically. This song has you dancing while happily reminiscing about every good moment you ever had, prepping you for a wonderful day. https://youtu.be/K0ibBPhiaG0
50 Cent – In Da Club: Like a lot of rap songs, I have absolutely no idea what 50 Cent is saying other than it’s My Birthday, we are dancing in the club, and it has a great dancing beat. The clean version works for me because then when I do recognize a word, it’s not an unnecessary curse word that I don’t know its reference. https://youtu.be/5qm8PH4xAss
The Weather Girls – It’s Raining Men: So, just for pure oldies and shock fun value, I threw this goodie in. Most men will say they hate it, but they won’t bother skipping it as they gather their briefcases, and the women who recognize it will enjoy this blast from the past. https://youtu.be/l5aZJBLAu1E
Survivor – Eye of the Tiger: Those first four beats were superiorly orchestrated purposefully to light a fire under any listeners caboose and get them motivated to charge the hill! The theme song to many inspirational movies, and commercials, it is designed to get you're a** out the door. https://youtu.be/btPJPFnesV4
The Chainsmokers & Coldplay – Something Just Like This: While grabbing a quick breakfast, bite, or protein shake, this is a perfect song to move and hum along to. I also must say, that as an ex-English teacher I LOVE when pop-culture references historical or literary figures. This song refers specifically to Achilles and to Hercules, and if even one curious teenager looks up either of these figures to understand the lyrics better, I applaud the artist and am thrilled that a child had the courage to educate themselves! https://youtu.be/FM7MFYoylVs
G-Eazy & Kehlani – Good Life (The Fate of the Furious): From the last in the Fast and the Furious series, the hip upbeat duo is a surprising find for me. Very upbeat catchy pop/rap song; Kehlani truly makes the song a hit; personally, I could listen to it without G-easy and enjoy it just the same. Her voice is a true harmonious pleasure to listen to especially in a rap song when lyrics can be difficult to understand, her voice is wonderfully crystal clear. https://youtu.be/FG9M0aEpJGE
Steve Aoki & Louis Tomlinson – Just Hold On: As you’re grabbing your keys and heading out the door, this catchy little tune is a great reminder that if today is a rough or difficult day, “just hold on” it will be over soon. https://youtu.be/Vt4Tq89R8u0
Walk the Moon – Shut Up and Dance: Getting you ready for your next playlist, or for the day, this is another great motivational song. I love listening to it when I’m having a down moment. I listen to just the chorus; when life is getting you down, when you have to do something you just don’t want to, suck it up, shut up and dance, and everything is going to be o.k. https://youtu.be/6JCLY0Rlx6Q
You slide in the seat of your car pepped up and ready for a fantastic day at work, and we need to keep that momentum up, so while you are driving and while you are at work, keep these songs playing in the background to keep your energy levels burning without that caffeine buzz.
9-11 am
Five Finger Death Punch - Battle Born: One of the newer rock bands in the past few years, FFDP is one group that can always keep you pumped, and Battle Born will have you prepared for the battles at work once you listen to this song.
Rush – Freewill: Masters of lyrics, rock legends Rush has no problem ever motivating anyone to do anything. Whether an old fan or a new listener, Freewill is the song to get you hooked to their legendary music and keep you moving through the day.
Jessie J- Masterpiece: This song is 20, 30, and even 40 something's generationers tribute song. If you need a song to become your own personal self-improvement or growth song this is the one. Jesse J's dynamic, fun and hyped up song teaches us that you are never too old to keep improving on your own masterpiece. https://youtu.be/PTOFEgJ9zzI
Avril Lavigne- Never Growing Up: Piggybacking on the idea of improving yourself, Avril’s song is a rebellious decree that no matter what age, you don’t “have” to grow up entirely. Hold on to some of the kid in you, it will keep you young and healthy. https://youtu.be/sXd2WxoOP5g
Beyonce – Irreplaceable: For every human, male or female, that has ever been wronged in a relationship, Beyonce has written the quintessential upbeat and empowering "don't let the door hit you in the a** on the way out" song, proving to everyone, they deserve to be treated with respect, honor, and loyalty. https://youtu.be/2EwViQxSJJQ
Big & Rich – Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy: Jumping around a bit, we throw some country in there with Big and Rich to get you feeling a little frisky. How can you help it? You have just booted your cheating partner out, and now you’re ready to get your country on and jump back in the saddle.
Lady Gaga – Bad Romance: However, Lady Gaga is there to seductively and vigorously remind you, men, that no matter what happens, she will always be there for your bad romance and love. https://youtu.be/qrO4YZeyl0I
Justin Timberlake – Can’t Stop this Feeling: While Justin dances his way into the hearts of the women, with his seductive eyes and smile, crooning how he can’t stop his feelings for you.
Shawn Mendes – Treat You Better: These songs are designed to keep you energized and motivated, and how can you not be when Shawn’s words are ones you have sometimes longed to hear and to an upbeat tempo. https://youtu.be/lY2yjAdbvdQ
Eminem – Lose Yourself: Just when you are feeling soothed, loved, and lively you are bombarded and shocked even more awake with an instant cappuccino shot of Eminem reminding you that now is the moment to grab life by the … reins. This is your moment, this is your day, continue having a great one and go to the meeting you need to, talk to the client, the boss, deal with a demanding situation with all the confidence you now have. https://youtu.be/_Yhyp-_hX2s
Ed Sheeran – Galway Girl: You have successfully dealt with the first issue of the day, time to enjoy a moment with the lively, voice of Ed as he imaginarily grabs and squeezes your hand in celebration of getting over the first hump. https://youtu.be/87gWaABqGYs
Imagine Dragons – Demons- Imagine Dragons assure you that they will be with you to help you along the way the rest of the day to help you face the rest of your work demons. https://youtu.be/mWRsgZuwf_8
Kiss – Rock and Roll all Night: Old school, back when people knew how to rock and roll all night, KISS’s Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley will remind you or teach you and get you hyped up “real” rock style.
David Bowie & Mick Jagger – Dancing in the Street: Once you've been properly schooled or reminded Rock icons David and Mick will take you out dancing just for a bit of fun and to confuse the heck out of you and to prepare you for the next fun upbeat hit.
Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just Want to Have Fun: There is no possible way to have an upbeat playlist sans caffeine without including this notorious and timeless pop classic to send you off to your next meetings or lunch hour.
You’ve made it halfway through your workday, and you’ve vaulted over hurdles like an Olympic champion and all without extra java. You’ve got this. Music is your “green” way. You don’t need Monster, Coffee, or Red Bull, not when you have the power of harmonious spirited vibrations supporting your whole being into the next part of your productive occupational day.
11am -1pm
Dead Milkman- Stuart: When you get the next chance, perhaps on your lunch break, prepare yourself for underappreciated but righteously awesome funky punk. If you have even the slightest intelligent yet sarcastic, witty and dark humor in you, you will love this song and play it multiple times and for your friends if you already haven’t.
Violent Fems- Blister in the Sun: Staying with a funky lunch, who doesn’t jump up and down when they think of big hands? It's impossible to be sad, tired or depressed to 80's dance-punk. However, stay too long in this genre, and no one is responsible for your hairdo the next day.
Maroon 5- Animals: First of all, if you haven’t seen the video, on your lunch break, male or female, watch it. When did sadistically, stalker, slaughterhouse, blood fetish become so damn sexy? I’m not sure which is hotter, the thumping pulse and tempo or the two beautiful bodies intertwined in pig’s blood (huh?) It goes to prove that music can make anything sexy, the fact that the bodies are Adam Levine and his beautiful model partner have nothing to do with it. https://youtu.be/qpgTC9MDx1o
David Guetta – Hey Mama ft Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha, & Afro Jax – One listen and good or bad, you will be stuck humming this dance beat in your head for days. Nicki Manaj is too trendy for her own good. https://youtu.be/uO59tfQ2TbA
Taylor Swift – Bad Blood & Look What You Made Me Do: See Taylor, I told you, that you made the list. This is probably one of her best songs in a while. It's dark and edgy for her yet it still has a pop and faster-paced tempo that keeps you moving. https://youtu.be/QcIy9NiNbmo https://youtu.be/3tmd-ClpJxA
Ellie Goulding – Love Me Like You Do: Personally, Ellie is hit or miss; however, she made a center bullseye with this one. Just the slightest bit of a slower tempo, it still keeps you swaying. Time for a little digesting.
Fall Out Boy- Centuries: Don’t get too comfortable. Time to bring that tempo right back up and remind yourself that today, you are taking over the world.
Mary Lambert – Secrets: Oh My Gosh! In love with this song! It has everything a contemporary pop song should have including a public service message. Keep up the great messages tagged to phenom songs.
ShineDown – Sound of Madness: Time for a little raging. Shinedown is another newer amazing thrash worthy hard rock band that you just want to rock out to.
Madonna – Material Girl: the key to your playlists are to constantly keep changing genres so your mood stays elevated. Madonna alone is everything anyone would ever need to stay elevated, and all of her songs work too.
Justin Beiber – Love Yourself: If you were to tell me I would like a boy band type of singer, let alone Beiber a year ago, I would have laughed. However, I have an out with this song; I heard it prior to knowing it was the Beiber, and it is catchy, so I fell in love with its appealing tunes and moveable melodies.
Michael Jackson – Beat It: No playlist would ever be complete without the world’s most iconic and legendary performer, Michael Jackson. I selected Beat It for the simple message to remind yourself to never let anyone take advantage of you at work. Stand up for yourself and watch how fast people change their tune.
Three Days Grace – Pain: The drum and bass line in this song along with the lyrics in this rock song get your head instinctively banging forward. Blood molecules rush forward steadily in a four-count mood stimulating jam.
Pitbull – Greenlight ft. Flo Rida, LunchMoney Lewis: A little odd rap song: however, what it lacks in oral originality, it makes up for in rhythm and fun progression.
Gloria Gaynor – I Will Survive: Lunch is over, and this oldie but goodie happily reminds you that you are going to make it through the rest of the afternoon.
The next few hours are the most critical in the no oral chemical digestive stimulant part of the day. Right after lunch, your tummy is full, so your body is using energy to digest the food. The afternoon sun is warming the building extra, so either you may get comfortably warm or the office turns the temperature down and the cooler air cools your body’s temperature into a resting sleep state. Now is the time to stay alert. Your next playlist needs to be hard, heavy, maybe a little angry and dangerous to keep your fuel levels up.
1-3 pm
Halsey – Castle: We are going to start off with a little anger and sexual vengeance. Straight from The Huntsman, the blend of throbbing bass and angelic church choir background is a beautiful way to express not only The Evil Queen but any wronged person seeking vindication.
Eminem & Rhianna – I Love the Way You Lie Part I & II: In the spirit of staying a little bitter with adrenaline, no rap song does it better than the sexy blend of Eminem & Rhianna’s two songs answering each other back to back.
Skillet- Not Gonna Die: If Eminem isn’t successful with his threats, Skillet reconfirms that no matter what happens to you, forcefully pull yourself through. Find your inner strength and know you will survive.
Tyler Farr – Redneck Crazy: Just so we don’t go too dark, too quickly and send a biting e-mail, we can still maintain the heightened mood but a little lighter in a Country way. Going Redneck crazy is sometimes a healthier way to blow off steam.
Halestorm – Daughters of Darkness: There are too few women in rock and metal, so when you find a badass b**** who brings the house down with her jams such as Lizzy Hale, you crank up the noise, even if you put in your earbuds, hiding in the bathroom stall, and you freaking jam.
Buck Cherry – Crazy Bitch: Pretend you have a tummy ache if you must, just to listen to one more crazy and wild song to throw your adrenaline into overdrive.
Tu Pac – Keep Ya Head Up: He might not be the father of rap, but this soulful poet known throughout the world for his meaningful lyrics was definitely the king. Even if you hate rap music, you can’t hate Tu Pac.
Avenged Seven-Fold – A Little Piece of Heaven: Are you ready for a hyper, sick and twisted ride through demented-ville that will have you impulsively bebopping along with it? If you like silly, sick and twisted things, watch the animated video, seriously funny.
Marilyn Manson – Beautiful People: Speaking of sick and twisted visual things… I’ve never understood Manson’s look, but I love his dark techno sound; it speaks to my inner dark child.
Kelly Clarkson – People Like Us: One of her lesser known songs, it’s a little dark for her, but sends a great message and will really lift your spirits.
Bonnie Tyler – I Need a Hero: After Kelly reassures you that you are not alone, sometimes you then just want a helping hand. Shrek and other media tools have used this great Classic Pop song as the perfect example to show that we all need rescuing sometimes.
Bullet for my Valentine – Tears Don’t Fall: Even if we feel like we might fall, fail or mess up, never let them see you cry. Keep it together, only a few hours more. You are stronger than you realize, you have made it this far, bang on a little more.
Stone Sour – Made of Scars: Life has left you full of lessons and experiences, and you have come out the other end a better person because of it. Yes, you have scars inside and out. Wear them proudly; they are your rock badges of glory and all you have accomplished.
Billie Idol – Rebel Yell: It’s 2:30, you might be feeling a little tired, you might be feeling challenged. What are you going to do? That’s right! Yell at life and tell it to, “Bring it, ‘More, More, More’”. You are a champion and will not be defeated.
Kelly Clarkson – My Life Would Suck Without You: You might need some words of encouragement though. At this moment, take a break and call your partner, friend, child or anyone you love and can't live without and tell them how much they mean to you. Hearing their voice will make you feel better, it will release endorphins into your bloodstream, make you smile, and give you a natural high with a shot of energy, and if you choose, share this cute song with them.
MC Hammer – You Can’t Touch This: Even with its opening chords, you can tell that while the song isn't "Hammer Time", MC always brings the groove. Something about this dance classic makes you want to go up to your office friends or nemesis and put your hand out, singing "Can't touch this", and walk away laughing, feeling a bit refreshed.
You have made it through the hump. Way to go! Don’t you feel amazing? You should, and be proud, but now is not the time to slack off. Now, is the time to figure out a quick break period before you go home. It’s time to squeeze in some exercise and go for a medium walk around the building, up and down the stairs, something. Get a solid 15 minutes of cardio in, while jamming out to the next playlist designed to keep your spirits soaring.
3-5 pm
Elle King – X’s & O’s; The first part of the list is upbeat pop created to get your butt moving. Elle’s sassy tune throws you in a confident mood and puts a stride in your step.
Pink – Raise a Glass: Pure Perfection is found in Pink because she doesn't care what anyone thinks (new lyrics?). All her songs display her unique style, but none more than this one that encourages you to join her.
Maggie Lindemann - Pretty Girl: Newish to the music scene, Maggie follows Pinks lead with the same message but a fresh style. Keep strutting with this one.
Blues Traveler – Hook: If you don't remember this one or have never heard it, get ready for an auditory explosion of music, allegory, and resonance mastery that you have to play it again and again.
Grease – You’re the one that I want: I had to throw one musical in, and no one can resist Grease! Everyone knows it, and can’t resist singing along to Olivia’s and John’s duets.
Little Mix – Black Magic – While searching around YouTube, I stumbled across the cute, teeny bopperish treasure that I couldn’t help but add because, well, it made me smile and want to move.
Taylor Swift - Shake it Off: Almost ready to go back inside, so let's power up this last one with Ms. Swift one more time. Shake off all the stress and worry of the day; it's almost over, and a cold beer or drink is waiting for you as a reward for the day.
Linkin’ Park - In the End: You are now back in your office, at your desk, or wherever you are stationed, pulling through the last hour and need to really feel the burn to pull through. Rest in Peace Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin’ Park, who died 7/20/2017, your music though will keep us going.
Saliva – Ladies and Gentlemen: As an advanced educated woman in her _0’s, I should not find a video with two females boxing appealing, so I have to blame it completely on the music. As mentioned before, the power of music is fierce. It has the power to convert the most formidable of opponents into allies. If music was a lawyer or a head of government, the world would be unified.
Drowning Pool- Bodies: When you need a song to fuel your inner fire, here it is. The percussions engage you and envelop you, making you one with the metal sound.
Harlee Steinfeld – Love Myself: You’re going to need to cool down a bit after the last one, so this pop song helps keep you up while calming you down. However, listening to the words, I’m convinced this a reply to Mr. Beiber; however, after doing research, the two singers are friends. Maybe she just got the idea off his song. Young pop singers???
Dr. Dre – I Need a Dr.: This song reaches out to the listener, speaks of human bonds, mistakes, life, and how you can ruin everything in seconds. Its profound, deep and rhythmic. The blending of voices telling the story is poetry in synchronization.
DMX – Party Up (Up in Here): DMX is another amazing storytelling rapper; however, this particular song is written purely to express getting one’s frustrations out. I think I must play this song at least twice a day.
Martina McBride – Independence Day – Time for a little Country. The countdown has begun, and you have done phenomenally at work today. Martina belts out your freedom about to come.
Dead Kennedys – Take this Job and Shove It: (cartoon factory whistle WHOOOO) The best 5 o’clock song for parting down the elevator and boogying out to the car.
You made it through the workday without those chemical stimulants. I knew you had it in you the whole time. Now, time to prepare for the car ride home possibly prepping for dinner. If you get stuck in the grind, and you start getting heavy-eyed, just turn up the volume. There are some mellower, older, nostalgic tunes, mixed with hip new stuff. Listen, reminisce, learn, love, repeat.
5-7 pm
Change – John Waite: We are going to start with the 80’s generation. Very few people will remember this (God, I can’t believe I’m saying this) 80’s oldie, some people might remember the artist (not to be confused with Tom Waites, and remember at the beginning when I said I had a wide range of music tastes); however, this great 80’s hit has one of the best timeless messages, so I continue to return to it and remind myself.
Rick Springfield – Jessie’s Girl: Staying in the 80’s Springfield was always on the charts. This Top Ten hit would be a hit even by today’s standards, but I’ll beat the person that tries to remake it.
Quit it Millennials! Yes, the 80’s were the best, but you don’t get to live them by trying to remake them. You missed them, too bad. Janis died before I could see her in person, but I wouldn’t dare desecrate her memory by redoing Me and Bobby McGee. Off soapbox, back to playlists. (Big Smile!)
Duran Duran -The Chauffeur: My favorite British 80's pop-rock band ever; however, I did not choose one of the megahits. If you know the band, but don't know this song, you must listen to it. Simon's voice is a sultry sin, and the keyboard notes are hypnotic. I think I went through ALL of puberty in the one playing of this song. I listen to it now, and nostalgically I am transported to an imaginary tropical oasis where all my fantasies are answered.
Aha- Take on Me: Greatest keyboard rift of the 80’s. Every teenager with big hair sang the rift along with the words. The video made music animation famous, and it is impossible to be tired or depressed when listening to this song.
Fun – Some Nights: And a quick snap back to present day, but at least it is with a “fun” song, that became an instant hit. You will find yourself awake and singing along.
Maroon 5 – Pay Phone: Another one of my favorite Maroon 5 songs; especially the version with Wiz Khalifa rapping in the center.
Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody: Now, I’m taking you back in time again. If you do not know this song, you have lived under a rock your entire life, and it is time to come out and join the rest of the human race an experience the glory that is the Queen’s finest rock opera.
Don Mclean - American Pie: Here, ladies and gentlemen, again, is a song that if you don’t know, you should. It is a part of American pop culture music history. It is forever burned in the minds of millions across multiple generations. It’s referenced in English classes as one of the most symbolic and metaphorical songs, and the refrain will stay with you so that you too will sing it “until the day that you die”.
Eagles – Hotel California: Another must know epic song, the Eagles are the sound of generations, and don't say, "but Hell froze over." To your elders, you sound like ---------s. Learn these songs younger generation; learn them by heart, and teach them to your children, so when someone says, "You can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave," you can contribute intelligently.
Abba - Dancing Abba: Swedish Pop Rock icons, all of the songs of this group became instant hits; they could not err. They proved it again to new generations with the stage performance and later movie Mama Mia. For decades people gleefully sing their songs; they had a “song to sing”, and they amazed the world when they did.
Lynyrd Skynyrd – Sweet Home Alabama: In the 70’s Southern Rock became a popular genre, and nobody played it better than Skynard. Numerous hits mark them as Southern Rock Gods, but this one will keep you awake better than any coffee or even “sweet tea”.
Charlie Daniels Band- Devil Went Down to Georgia: Another Southern Rock genius, Charlie not only rocked the South, he rocked the globe, and this song will forever be branded in history because of a boy named Johnny and his hot golden fiddle playin’ fingers made you kick your heels up.
Bee Gees- Stayin Alive: The other genre that kept the 70’s moving was Disco. Feathered hair and leisure suits were considered “cool”, and John Travolta made the movie that this song came from “hot”. Well, part of that sentence is true.
Jimmy Buffett – Margaritaville: If you don’t know what a Parrot Head is, it’s time you learn. Any lover of Mr. Buffett’s island, tropical rock music that has ruled and entertained for almost 50 years is considered a Parrot head.
You have made it home, you have had your first drink of the evening, and you have even had dinner. You are truly amazing. Look at what a kick-ass playlist can help you do. Now it is time for a little downtime, you time. Grab that second beer, glass of wine, water, or favorite beverage and find your favorite lounging spot. Sit out on the deck, cozy up in an overstuffed couch or chair, take a hot bubble bath and plug into these songs whose whole purpose is to keep you entertained, relaxed, yet alert because you know and love them so well you will sing along. Again, most of these artists are Music Legends from Decades ago, and if you are unfamiliar with them, it's time to be musically educated on what you missed out on.
7-9 pm
Fleetwood Mac – Silver Springs: We start out our playlist with the goddess of 70’s Folk Rock. Stevie Nicks flows through time agelessly, she continues to sing, perform and seduce you with her voice regardless of the song, and this one is no different.
Elton John – Little Jeanie: The best and most unique styled writer, artist, and performer, for almost 50 years. Knighted by the Queen of England for his talent, Sir Elton’s creative genius is noticed in everything he does, and this song is no different. This song, once you know it becomes a part of your core being.
CCR – Southern Cross: When you’re ready to get lost on an ocean of eternal pleasant yearning for endless waters, skies and stars, to feel the pull of a cosmic force that connects you to the artist and the universe, then this is the song.
Zac Brown Band – Colder Weather: Even though Zac had already been established in the Country industry for a few years, it was this song that first caught my attention, from one gypsy soul to another I was caught.
Rascal Flatts – God Bless the Broken Road: Sticking with Country for a moment, as stated earlier, music has the ability to reach people’s emotions in a way that very few other things can. This song will not only reach the depth of you, it slowly glides over your skin, and down your back and down to your toes encouraging you to call your partner and tell them how much you love them.
Tracy Chapman – Fast Car: Tracy’s timbre is unparalleled. If you are unfamiliar with her work, start here and work your way through her albums, no other female artist creates a deep and rich quality that echoes memories across the ages.
Jewel – Hands: Rolling from one deep song into another, Jewel reaches her audiences with her ability to reverberate her voice at key points. All of her songs send chills and creates goosebumps that always amazes me.
Alabama – Song of the South: Don’t get too relaxed. Bringing back the Southern Rock, Song of the South represents the whole Southern Rock movement and will have you back rockin’ in a matter of moments.
Jimmy Buffet – Son of a Son of a Sailor: Slightly moving over to our oceans again, our lead Parrothead makes you want to leave dry land forever and take on the life of a pirate even if it is 100 years too late.
James Taylor – Sweet Baby James: We couldn’t get through these playlists without a mention of Mr. Taylor, like many of the other iconic geniuses, his music is where legends are made. The imagery of this song sprays across whatever room you are sitting in as he sings his story to you.
Phil Collins – Against All Odds: In 1984, the title movie came out. It was a romantic thriller film, and its soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy. This song was deservingly nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. Once you listen to it, you will understand why. Collins’ music was everywhere for twenty years, and it was always a hit.
Bread – Goodbye Girl: Another title song representing the movie from which it was written, this great 70’s song represents a 1977 comedy-drama film written by Neil Simon. The song’s lyrics are wistful and encourage the listener to believe in love.
Air Supply – Making Love Out of Nothing of All: Many artists write and sing about love and pull at our heartstrings; that's the purpose of a love song. However, no other duo in music history before or since has mastered the art of the love song like Air Supply. Every song they laid track to was purposefully written to open your chest and pour every metaphor, simile, and allegory possible about love and coat your heart with them. You will ache, rejoice, weep, laugh, yearn, celebrate, and every other possible emotion associated with the word love when listening to their music.
Meat Loaf – Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad: Air Supply supercharged you with the greatest love song, and now Meat Loaf, the world’s greatest Rock Opera writer and singer will melt you with this epic song.
Righteous Brothers – Unchained Brothers: To finish off your day, playlist, and songs of love, I leave you with a love song from 1963 when love had a different meaning to people. It lasted forever, it really was eternal, people stayed true. It was a time before cell phones when you talked face to face and people communicated to work through their issues instead of relying on technology. It was a much simpler time in many ways, and maybe in many ways, it proves the point that ignorance is bliss, but doesn't some bliss in your life sound good?
TADA! We made it together! You made it without your oral stimulants and instead relied on the power of auditory emotional stimulation created by the only thing I know that can change the way a person feels every two and a half minutes (the length of an average song). We jumped from generations and genres, tempos and beats to create energy levels that were needed at specific times. Only music can do this. I challenge you to find more songs and add them to our playlists, remembering to add songs that only keep you supercharged and pumped up. PLAY ON!

Sweet Dreams ~ Making Herbal Dream Pillows
by Karyn Siegel-Maier
It was the lady of the house who took pride in making these preparations and spent considerable time doing so. One can recall perhaps, grandmother's rose jar lovingly placed in the "best room" where her guests would benefit from the jar's sweet aroma. When visitors came to call, the lid was lifted and the contents stirred to release the soothing perfume. In all probability, she also made sachets or sweet bags to scent her linen and fine articles of clothing. She may even have placed small pillows of fragrant herbs near her head upon retiring to prevent nightmares and assure a good nights rest. Today, herbal pillows are all but neglected as sleeping aids. But, if you're willing to take a chance on this simple indulgence, they stand a good chance of resurrection.
Remember those anxious European mothers of restless babes? They frequently fashioned small pillows of dill (Anthuem graveolens) to encourage their children to enter sleep. The word dilla, from which the herb eventually took its name, is Norse meaning "to lull." Agrimony was also a popular herb to use in pillows since it was also believed to be soporific, or sleep inducing. An old English writing tells us that "If it is leyed under a mann's head, he shal sleepyn as he were dead; He shal never drede ne wakyn till fro under his head it be taken."
The fictional potion given to Juliet by the Friar to make her appear lifeless, was prepared with belladonna (Atropa be Uadonna) and merely brought on a deep sleep. How fortunate that was for our Juliet, since belladonna is extremely toxic, and a good dose usually does more than make one appear lifeless. However, a 16th-century practice of placing the moistened leaves of the plant upon one's forehead was performed to safely induce sleep. Another sleeping aid was the dew collected from the leaves of lady's mantle (Alchemilla vulgarus) which was administered by a generous sprinkling on the bed linens.
Herbal pillows are made by sewing dried herbs into a square of cloth or bag, but without a fixative, their aroma is short lived. Many herbs lose much of their original scent when dried. The lovely scent of the rose for instance, is greatly diminished when dried. Fixatives help to retain and develop the fragrant combination of herbs used in making potpourri, the base material for making herbal pillows.
Traditionally used animal fixatives are ambergris, civet, and musk. Ambergris is a secretion obtained from the intestines of the sperm whale, civet from the African civet cat, and musk from the male musk deer of Central Asia. These extracts are available in synthetic form, a product equally suitable, and more sensitive to the preservation of wildlife.
Orris root and benzoin are suitable plant fixatives, and are widely available. Orris root is obtained by sun-drying and peeling the fresh root of Iris florentina. After drying, the root is stored for two years to develop a delicate violet scent. Orris root is usually purchased in ground form. Benzoin, once called Benjamin or Java Frankincense, is a gum which exudes from the Stryrax benzoin, a shrub native to Java and Siam. Benzoin is a common ingredient in incense.
Spices add an interesting scent to the potpourri mixture, and also act as fixatives. Cinnamon is derived from a tree (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), grown in China, India, and the East Indies, and was used during Biblical times to make holy oils to anoint priests and altars. The familiar sticks, obtained from the inner bark of a young tree, may be ground and added to the potpourri mixture.
Sandalwood (Santalum album), native to the Malabar Coast, is another enticing additive. Since ancient times the wood of this tree was used for making fans, musical instruments, and to line closets to ward off moths. Sandalwood is also burned at the altar, and eventually became an important ingredient in incense burned in synagogues. The chips, or shavings, are most suitable for potpourri.
The bark of Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) is highly fragrant and was valued as an embalming agent in Egypt, and as a perfume by the ancient Hebrews. Native to Arabia and Ethiopia, the bark of this tree produces a bitter tasting gum once used as a cure for sore throat, and was burned by the sun worshippers of Heliopolis each day at noon until the mid-1700s. A powder form of myrrh is easily obtainable, and best suited for potpourri.
These are just a sampling of potential fixative ingredients, to which you may add endless combinations of herbs and flowers to complete your potpourri. Once you have made your potpourri mixture, store it away from direct heat or sunlight in airtight glass jars or tins for about one month to allow a heady fragrance to develop.
Various materials are suitable for pillow coverings, such as velvet, silk, or chintz. A layer of muslin or cotton should be placed between two evenly sized squares of material, which can be 12 to 18 inches, or whatever size you care to make the pillow. On this layer, the potpourri is added, and another thin layer of cotton or muslin is placed on top. The muslin layers will make the pillow soft and help prevent the plant material from bunching into one corner. Quilt batting is ideal for herbal pillows since the middle layers of cotton are built into the fabric. Another trick to prevent bunching is to knot a few threads through all the layers once the seams have been securely secured closed by needle and thread, or with a sewing machine. Decorating the pillows with bits of ribbon, buttons, lace, or everlastings, adds a personal finishing touch, and will help to make your dreams a little bit sweeter.
