Slash anuncia el LP de covers de blues repleto de estrellas 'Orgy of the Damned'
Tumblr media

Generic Characters
In addition to persistent characters, there are a number of generic encounter-able characters. For most of these, it is heavily implied that the player does not repeatedly encounter the same generic character over and over, and thus, the game does not store a full stat block for these characters without due cause.
There are a few limited exceptions to the rule of these always being a different individual: one example is V-KO. She is both a static character and a repeatable encounter on Mhen'ga; but as a factory-produced machine that is styled to act as a ubiquitous medical dispenser, more V-KO bots are liable to find their way to other planets while using the same 'encounter template' as the one on Mhen'ga. Indeed, there are plans to eventually enable the player to add a version to their ship.

Ship Stats
List of stats and their purposes
Trials In Tainted Space Wiki Strange Egg
Explanation
Shields
First layer of health a ship has. Can be regenerated in combat with certain ship gadgets and will fully regenerate after leaving combat.
Shield Def
Reduces the damage taken to the ship's shield health per an attack. Making it more effective against double shot and full auto Ship weapons.
Armor
The second and final layer of health a ship has. Can be regenerated in combat with certain ship gadgets, or slowly outside of combat by a dockmaster NPC such as Vahn or Shekka if she is a crew member. Requires a ship to be in port for repairs.
Armor Def
Reduces the damage taken to the ship's armor health per an attack. Making it more effective against double shot and full auto Ship weapons.
Ship Energy Store
The maximum amount of energy a ship can store at any one time. Ship energy is used to fire weapons and use certain ship gadgets. You will always begin combat with full ship energy.
Ship Energy Generation
The amount of energy a ship will generate each combat turn. Using the Recharge! ability will double the ship's energy generation for that round, but prevent the use of other equipment.
Agility
The primary stat used to calculate ship evasion. Is twice as effective at increasing evasion.
Sensors
The primary stat used to calculate ship accuracy. Is twice as effective at increasing accuracy.
Systems
Secondary stat used to calculate ship accuracy. Is additionally used offensively and defensively for 'system checks' in combat.
Thrust
Secondary stat used to calculate ship evasion. Is additionally used in combat to determine escape chance when using Escape!.
Accuracy
Determines the chance to hit with the ship's weapons when using Battle! during combat.
Evasion
Determines the chance a ship has to completely avoid damage from an attack. Can be boosted during a combat round when using Evade! at the cost of preventing ship equipment use for that combat round.
Module/Crew Capacity
The amount of space a ship has to install ship equipment. Empty modules can instead be used to increase crew capacity.
Weapon Capacity
The number of hardpoints a ship has to install ship weapons. Unless otherwise noted, ship weapons also require a module.
Fixed Equipment
Ship weapons, upgrades and gadgets that can not be removed and do not count against the ship equipment limit.
Storage space
Determines total space per item type (Wardrobe, Equipment, Consumables, Valuables, and Toys) in Storage that a ship can hold.
Bonus crew capacity
Additional crew capacity that is not affected by Module/Crew Capacity.
Calculated Values
Below is a list of how to calculate certain ship variables (prior to ship ownership and item bonuses) Evasion
Ship thrust/2 + Ship agility
Accuracy
Ship systems/2 + Ship sensors
Ship Stat Bonuses
Ships owned by Captain Steele receive a bonus to certain stats based on Steele's own stats Evasion
+Reflexes/4
Accuracy
+Aim/4
Armor
+(Physique/(Steele's level *50)*100)% Bonus armor
The highest achievable bonus is*
12% at max physique with Quivering Quasarstatus effect and Signet of Bravery as accessory equiped
10% at max physique without bonuses
Shields
+(Willpower/(Steele's level *20)*100)% Bonus shields
The highest achievable bonus is*
30% with 'Iron Will'perk
25% without 'Iron Will'perk
Tumblr media
Weapon Damage (hidden)
+Aim/2
* Highest achievable bonus is calculated at level 10, without the Perfect Simulantstatus effect as it requires the use of certain Fated Names or save editing to acquire.

a character's disposition.
similar (maybe even a synonymous to) temperament, a disposition refers to the baseline approachability of a character. it is a quick way to reference their most frequent/common affect, which is useful for interactions.
* a reserved disposition refers to a character who is mainly quiet when approached. they lean toward serious, or cold personalities. they don't easily give anything away. they can be friendly, but they usually keep it distant, and likewise their hostility has a distant angle as well. they are simply neutral-minded and hard to crack, and generally not very emotional.
reserved people are typically phlegmatic or melancholic types. some can be choleric.
example: marena is reserved because she is an old goddess. also, as an embodiment of the primordial tenet of death, she is a figure that moves best through silence; charles is reserved because, although he is surprisingly honest about his thoughts and experiences, he is very emotionally distant from everything regarding them.
* a guarded disposition might similar to a reserved one, but there's a key difference: an emphasized distrust overlaid over their interactions. a reserved character keeps to themselves out of general introversion, whereas a guarded character is keeping to themselves as a protective measure, and they can be extroverted or introverted. they are closer their feelings, but they feel a need to control them.
guarded people are most typically melancholic or choleric types.
examples: red is guarded due to experience, he keeps his emotions in check and gives little away because his lifestyle demands a certain degree of paranoia.
* an amiable disposition is best represented by characters who are nice, as a rule, but not necesarily go out of their way to be friendly towards others, either because they're timid/shy or because they don't find it in themselves to be so. so in a way, they're similar to a guarded type, except they're generally more approachable because they want to be. they're quicker to smile, quicker to make jokes, they strive toward harmony, but they won't go out of their way to reach out to you meaningfully, unless they happen to really like you.
they're typically phlegmatic or melancholic types. some of them are sanguine.
examples: 1. for generally benevolent types: flor is nice but shy, so she's generally kind to people, but anxiety often won't let her go farther than that; mikhail comes across as very affable and charming, but also as a quite secretive person; olivia is kind but wraps a certain layer of distance around herself and others; 2. on the other side of the spectrum we've got samuel, who is quite cordial as a rule, but who is not necessarily a good or friendly individual; and renaud, who usually opts to be courteous or nice, but he's also quite evil. 3. for neutral types: janus and joaquín, who are deities and usually have motives that lie beyond the good-evil dichotomy, but that are also generally safe to approach and very pleasant.
* a friendly disposition is that of someone who goes out of his way to connect with others, and it always goes beyond pleantries. they are very generous with their time and usually quite helpful. they love to spend time with others, so they're mostly extroverts, but not strictly. morally speaking, they are almost all benevolent.
they tend to have sanguine or phlegmatic temperaments.
examples: marcelo (specifically, canon marcelo), who is super sweet, and eager to make friends and call people a friend, and who is in turn super loyal to those he loves; abel, who is an angel tasked with helping humanity, and who usually wears his heart on his sleeve; and thor, who is widely regarded as friend and protector of mankind, is quick to be friendly toward humans.
* a sociable disposition might seem the same as a friendly one, at a glance, and while they're linked in sense, it doesn't necesarily mean they are interchangeable. while a friendly type is almost always sociable, a sociable type is not always friendly. they are extroverts, which means they usually lack gripes when it comes to interpersonal exchanges, but they might not even be nice. they can be, but they can just as easily be assholes, and they usually lack a filter keeping them from being so.
they tend to have choleric and sanguine temperaments.
examples: saul pretty much embodies the archetype i'm constructing, since he's a talkative guy but also quick to be mean and boisterous in a way that can be either completely unlikable or really charming, depending on how you see it. ysmael, who is also quite talkative and silver-tongued, but can turn his tone frightening on a dime; and jerome, who will talk to anyone about anyone and is usually quite friendly, but won't easily let you into his inner circle.
* an aggressive disposition should be pretty self-explanatory, all in all, but there's a few specific things that ought to be mentioned. aggression should not always be taken to mean "physical" aggression, though it comes with the package. these types are usually extroverted, and usually bold and very blunt in approach, and so aggressive actually refers to the general way they conduct themselves. and indeed, they're usually not very nice or friendly. even their friendliness comes off very jagged and crass. they might or might not be aggressive in an offensive manner, but they are always so in a defensive manner.
they are almost always choleric in temperament.
examples: fenrir for sure, who normally doesn't attempt to hide his distaste for most other people; ludo, who turns violent on a dime, simply because he felt like it, and has little patience for complex conversations; logan, who is generally scrappy and obnoxious, and quick to turn aggressive if he feels threatened, even if he generally prefers to keep things from going physical.
these archetypes are not strict rules, etched in stone. that's why rather than being neatly differentiated, these archetypes overlap and share things in common. that's because rather than personalities, which are multilayered and complex, a disposition is just that -- what you're most likely to be greeted by when you interact with one person. a baseline. so a guarded type can be friendly, with the right person; and a friendly type can be aggressive, if his personality is conductive towards that, and under the right circumstances.

Negotiations on a new coronavirus relief bill hit an impasse on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, leaving no clear path forward even as millions of Americans face a sudden drop in unemployment benefits, and the economy teeters on the brink.
A meeting between top White House officials and Democratic leaders ended with no agreement on extending emergency unemployment benefits that expire Friday or on reviving a moratorium on evictions that lapsed last week. That means some 20 million jobless Americans will lose $600 weekly enhanced unemployment benefits that Congress approved in March, which could send the economy reeling.
After a day of meetings, all parties declared their differences all but irreconcilable. Democrats shot down the idea of a short-term fix for unemployment insurance and the eviction moratorium, which President Trump had announced earlier Wednesday he would support. And the two parties remained far apart on a larger bill, with Democrats standing by their wide-ranging $3 trillion proposal even as Republicans struggled to coalesce around a $1 trillion bill released by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday.
Each side said the other was to blame for the failure. Paying the price will be the unemployed at a moment of deep uncertainty and fear, with coronavirus cases spiking and states pulling back on reopening as deaths near 150,000 in the United States. The talks could get back on track in coming days, but the signs Wednesday were not promising.
“I don’t know that there is another plan, other than no deal," said White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. "Which will allow unemployment, enhanced unemployment, I might add, to expire. … No deal certainly becomes a greater possibility the longer these negotiations go.”
Meadows offered his dour assessment as he headed into his third straight day of meetings with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) at the Capitol. He was no more upbeat when he came out.
“We are nowhere close to a deal,” Meadows said.
Democrats echoed his pessimistic assessment, while putting the blame on Republicans.
“Our Republican friends don’t seem to come close to meeting the moment. … They’ve put us up against the wall. We have two cliffs because they wouldn’t negotiate for months,” Schumer said.
“They’re tied in a total knot because of the disunity in their caucus, because of their inability to gather votes, because the president says one thing one day, he says another thing the other day,” Schumer added. "We want to come back and keep talking to them. But they don’t have anything to say.”
McConnell held out hope in an evening interview with PBS NewsHour, saying: “This is only Wednesday. So hope springs eternal that we’ll reach some kind of agreement, either on a broad basis or a more narrow basis to avoid having an adverse impact on unemployment.”
Earlier Wednesday Trump had called for a quick fix to address the unemployment benefits and eviction moratorium, saying other issues could wait.
“The rest of it, we’re so far apart, we don’t care, we really don’t care,” Trump told reporters outside the White House, referring to divisions between the two parties.
But Democrats called that approach wholly inadequate.
“We don’t know why the Republicans come around here with a skinny bill that does nothing to address really what’s happening with the virus, and has a little of this and a little of that. We’re not accepting that," Pelosi said. "We have to have the comprehensive full bill.”
McConnell has not embraced the piecemeal approach either, insisting any bill must include a five-year liability shield for businesses, healthcare providers and others — a non-starter for Democrats.
More than 20 million Americans remain unemployed and have been receiving a $600 weekly emergency unemployment payment that Congress approved in March, on top of whatever benefit their state offers. That extra federal benefit runs out Friday.
Democrats want to extend the extra jobless payment at its current level. The Senate GOP bill released Monday proposes cutting it to $200 weekly until states can phase in a new system that would aim to replace 70 percent of a worker’s wages before unemployment.
Underscoring the continued need, the head of the Federal Reserve said Wednesday that rising coronavirus cases since mid-June are beginning to weigh on the economy, based on consumer credit card spending and hotel occupancy data as well as some labor market indicators.
“On balance, it looks like the data are pointing to a slowing in the pace of the recovery," Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell said during a news conference Wednesday. "I want to stress it’s too early to say both how large that is and how sustained it will be.”
Powell said funding from the $2 trillion Cares Act passed in March was key to keeping people in their homes and jobs. He pointed to the success of the small-business Paycheck Protection Program for getting money directly to businesses that couldn’t necessarily have been saved through a Fed lending program.
“Lending is a particular tool, and we’re using it very aggressively, but fiscal policy is essential here," Powell said. “As I’ve said, more will be needed from all of us, and I see Congress is negotiating now over a new package, and I think that’s a good thing."
But the negotiations are not going well. Democrats want to spend three times more than Republicans on the overall bill, expected to be Congress’s last major coronavirus relief bill before the November election. They also are insisting on a new round of state and local aid, which was excluded from the GOP bill.
Some Republicans don’t want to spend any more money at all, and there are deep divisions over the $1 trillion bill McConnell released Monday, which proposes to send a new round of $1,200 stimulus checks to individual Americans and inject more money into the Paycheck Protection Program, among other provisions. McConnell said in his PBS interview that there are about 20 GOP senators who would prefer to take no additional action because of deficit concerns.
A number of Republican senators signaled Wednesday they were open to some kind of short-term, stand-alone deal — but also said there was no clarity on what that might actually entail, or on much of anything at all.
“There’s no consensus on anything,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) told reporters twice after a closed-door lunch with Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. He described this as “A normal part of the catharsis that goes with actually getting to the solution," while noting: "We’re far away right now.”
McConnell is leaving negotiations with Democrats to Trump administration officials. The whole process has been overtaken by increasingly bitter partisanship, which was on display on the Senate floor Wednesday as McConnell and Schumer traded insults.
McConnell accused Democrats of adopting a “completely unhinged position” in insisting on continuing the $600 weekly emergency unemployment benefits. Republicans say such generous payments act as a disincentive for people to return to the workforce, given that in many cases they can make more on unemployment.
Referring to Pelosi, McConnell said, “She’ll just refuse to legislate until the election and wish American families good luck dealing with the pandemic.”
Schumer denounced those comments in his own floor speech a short time later.
“This absurd, nasty insinuation by the Republican leader doesn’t pass the laugh test,” Schumer said.
As time runs out on the expanded jobless benefit, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) has started crafting an alternative unemployment insurance proposal, according to an official familiar with the draft.
The plan would allow states to choose one of two options, the official said: either a jobless benefit supplement that amounts to 80 percent of the initial wage, or a sliding scale that would amount to an additional $500 per week in August, $400 per week in September and $300 per week in October. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a plan that was still being drafted.
Trump’s push for an extension of the eviction moratorium came even though the GOP legislation released by McConnell did not include it. The eviction moratorium provision, which was passed as part of the Cares Act in March, shielded 12 million renters nationwide from eviction — but it expired Friday. House Democrats have pushed for it to be extended.
A federal eviction moratorium is ending. Here’s what renters should know.
Larry Kudlow, the president’s top economic adviser, suggested Sunday the administration would back extending the moratorium. He then clarified Monday on Fox News that the administration was pushing an extension in forbearance for homeowners — allowing them to delay payments on their mortgages — but that the administration was still studying the eviction moratorium. That measure prevented renters from being evicted from properties with mortgages backed by the federal government.
Trump also said Wednesday he would continue to demand nearly $1.8 billion for a new FBI building at its present site, near his hotel in downtown Washington.
McConnell and multiple other Republicans have said they oppose inclusion of the FBI headquarters provision.
“Then Republicans should go back to school and learn. They need a new building … and we can do it very easily,” Trump said.
Congress passed four bipartisan bills in March and April, injecting about $3 trillion into the economy as the coronavirus began its deadly and economically devastating march across the country. At the time lawmakers hoped the pandemic would die down; instead it’s been spiking in many places.

Dear, everyone we’ve met.
Perhaps we should start from the beginning.
Dear Mr. Poe, as unhelpful as you were at times, you and your wife were not the worst guardians we could have had. Olaf set the bar pretty low, but you did genuinely care for us, and we thank you. Though, you should still get that cough checked out. Don’t want you to die on us too. Dear Justice Strauss, I know that you are one of the kindest, and most wonderful women I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. And I’m sorry that you couldn’t be our guardian. It just, wasn’t meant to be. I hope you find another set of bright young children to adopt though.  Dear Monty, I’m so, so sorry that we couldn’t save you. I really wished I could have been to Peru with you someday. Maybe get to name that 5 legged gecko. Dear Josephine, you were truly brave and formidable, even in your final moments. I wish I could have seen you back in your glory days though. Dear Larry, your sacrifice was not for nothing. You were a wonderful waiter, and protected us in most all of the restaurants we’ve eaten in. I’ll never forget you and your bravery, or your burrito that Carmelita outright stole. Dear Phil, It’s nice to know that your leg got better. Even if your other one got eaten by a shark. I hope you’re living the happiest, and most optimistic life. Dear Charles, you were one of a kind. It wasn’t right for Sir to walk all over you like that, and I’m glad you got out of it. I’m sure you’re much happier with your new partner. Dear Olivia, you were like a beacon in a hurricane, which we just so happened to have been through before. You were with us since that awful school, almost to the end, and I wish your end hadn’t come so soon. You and Jacques would have made a wonderful couple. Dear Jerome, it’s alright that you felt you weren’t brave enough to help us. I don’t blame you at all for wanting to live a safe life, away from all the mess we made. I hope you were just as happy with your new partner as well. Dear Jacques, I’m sorry we couldn’t save you. We’d only just met, but I wanted so much to help you, and we failed. Both of your siblings loved and remembered you long after your death. Dear Hector, try not to faint off the self sustainable mobile air device. I’d hate to see, or hear about you taking such a nasty fall. And, thank you for taking care of the Quagmires for us, while we were busy with the rest of our story. Dear Hal, I wish we could have formally apologized to you for what we did. We didn’t mean to burn down the library, and we were going to give the keys back. I hope, you were able to start another library, like the one we failed to save. Dear Hugo, Kevin, and Colette, your “freakish” qualities do not make you horrendous, nor do they define you. I hope all of you found a better end than what the show gave you. And Kevin specifically, stop lamenting about being able to use both hands with equal amount of skill as though you’ve lost the use of both. It’s a terrible mindset. Dear Bald Man, I wish I knew your name. You’re a wonderful painter, and I’m glad you and the other henchpeople decided to leave Count Olaf’s employ and find a better lifestyle. Dear Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender, you were wonderful. You stayed behind after Olaf and the others left, and told us that you enjoyed our food. And you even remembered the recipe to the puttanesca sauce. I hope nobody misgendered you, or made you feel worthless. Dear Fernald, I know you probably don’t like being called “Hooky”. I heard from Sunny that, you were one of the kindest people she’d ever met, and I had to believe her. I hope your stepfather wasn’t too angry with you after all that time. Dear Pale Faced Women, I. Wish I could give you two a second chance. You took too many opportunities to delight in the suffering of others. I’m glad you got to find a happy ending, but I’d still appreciate an apology. Dear Fiona, I hope you found your father. And I hope that, you helped all those Snow Scouts out of that dreadful situation. And, I hope you and your brother found your own happy ending. Dear Dewey, you know it was an accident. I’m, still sorry that we dropped the gun. Know that, everything turned out fine, and the library was still safe. Dear Kit, your daughter grew up into an amazing girl. She had the Snicket spunk, and the mind of a Denouement. I wish she could have seen both of her parents. They were such amazing people. And, last but not least..
Dear Count Olaf. You chased us, all across the map, and caught us no matter where we went. You killed, either personally or offhandedly, and deceived your way place after place, hunting us down for our fortune. You went after our loved ones, new and old. You’ve, made me so terrified, it left me with lasting effects. And, even after all that... I feel bad for you. Not just a pity party, with “Get Well Soon” streamers and a big slice of apology cake. You could have been a decent person. Certain things just, conspired against you, and helped you turn out the way you did. Maybe if things had gone much differently way back then, we would have been proud to call you Uncle Olaf. Maybe we could have been proud to have uncles and aunts in every corner of the map, instead of dealing with the after effects of the adult temper tantrum we like to call the schism. I hope you’re genuinely happy, wherever you are, and that the world has stopped hurting you.
The world is quiet here. Especially without all of you.
From, Klaus Baudelaire.

Jerome Richardson
"The name Jerome Richardson said it all. Legendary studio player, quintessential side man to Charles Mingus, Those baritone saxophone solos and soprano sax solos on “ Black saint and the sinner lady “..go down in history. Few remember he was also a sub for King Curtis as well. Jazz flautist, key original member of Thad Jones / Mel Lewis, so many. I don’t know who took the original picture- Jerome gave this to me as a gift. He was great fun to be around ,one of the real ones in this life." - Tim Price

Eddie Kendricks
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Edward James Kendrick (December 17, 1939 – October 5, 1992), best known by the stage name Eddie Kendricks, was an American singer and songwriter. Noted for his distinctive falsetto singing style, Kendricks co-founded the Motown singing group The Temptations, and was one of their lead singers from 1960 until 1971. His was the lead voice on such famous songs as "The Way You Do The Things You Do", "Get Ready", and "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)". As a solo artist, Kendricks recorded several hits of his own during the 1970s, including the number-one single "Keep On Truckin'".
Biography
Early years
Kendricks was born in Union Springs, Alabama on December 17, 1939, the son of Johnny and Lee Bell Kendrick. He had one sister, Patricia, and three brothers, Charles, Robert, and Clarence. His family moved to the Ensley neighborhood of Birmingham, where he met and began singing with his best friend Paul Williams in their church choir in the late 1940s. In 1955, Kendricks, Williams, and friends Kell Osborne and Jerome Averette formed a doo-wop group called The Cavaliers, and began performing around Birmingham. The group decided to move for better opportunities in their musical careers, and in 1957 the group moved to Cleveland, Ohio on E 123rd and Kinsman. In Cleveland, they met manager Milton Jenkins, and soon moved with Jenkins to Detroit, Michigan, where the Cavaliers renamed themselves "The Primes." Under Jenkins' management, the Primes were successful in the Detroit area, eventually creating a female spin-off group called The Primettes (later The Supremes). In 1961, Osbourne moved to California, and the Primes disbanded. Kendricks and Paul Williams joined forces with members Otis Williams and Melvin "Blue" Franklin of Otis Williams and the Distants after three members quit and became The Elgins, who on the same day changed their name to "The Temptations" and signed to Motown.
With the Temptations
The Temptations began singing background for Mary Wells. After an initial dry period, The Temptations quickly became the most successful male vocal group of the 1960s. Although technically Kendricks was first tenor in the group's harmony, he predominately sang in a falsetto voice. Among the Temptations songs Kendricks sang lead on were "Dream Come True" (1962), the group's first charting single; "The Way You Do the Things You Do" (1964), the group's first US Top 20 hit; "I'll Be in Trouble" (1964); "The Girl's Alright With Me" (1964), a popular b-side that Kendricks co-wrote; "Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue)" (1964); "Get Ready" (1966); "Please Return Your Love to Me" (1968); and "Just My Imagination" (1971). He was also allowed to sing a few leads in his natural voice such as "May I Have This Dance" (1962). He shares lead vocal duty on other records, including "You're My Everything (The Temptations song)" (1967) (shared with David Ruffin), and a long string of Norman Whitfield produced psychedelic soul records where all five Temptations sang lead, such as the Grammy winner "Cloud Nine" (1968), "I Can't Get Next to You" (1969), and "Ball of Confusion" (1970). He also leads on "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" (1968), a popular duet with Diana Ross and the Supremes, and on the Temptations' famous version of the Christmas classic "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (1968).
In the Temptations, Kendricks was responsible for creating most of the group's vocal arrangements, and also served as wardrobe manager, including the now famous purple suits the group wore for one performance. Though Whitfield had chief responsibility for writing, Kendricks co-wrote and received credit for several Temptations songs apart from "The Girl's Alright With Me" including "Isn't She Pretty" (1961) and "Don't Send Me Away" (1967). His favorite food was cornbread, and as a result he was nicknamed "Cornbread" (or "Corn" for short) by his groupmates. According to Otis Williams, Kendricks romantically pursued Diana Ross, lead singer of the Supremes, and he was said to have been close friends with Martha Reeves of the Vandellas. In her second book, Supreme Faith, Supremes singer Mary Wilson writes that she and Kendricks were lovers "briefly," but remained close friends.
Kendricks remained in the group through the rest of the decade, but a number of issues began to push him away from it in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was uncomfortable with singing the psychedelic style that Whitfield was now crafting for the group as opposed to the romantic ballads they had sung under the direction of Smokey Robinson; his friend Paul Williams was often too ill to perform with the group; and Kendricks often found himself at odds with bandmates Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin. As he grew away from the group, Kendricks began to rekindle his friendship with ex-Temptation David Ruffin, who convinced him to leave the group.
In a 1991 interview with a Chicago television series called Urban Street, Kendricks said he had actually considered leaving the group as early as 1965, even though that was when the band was finally starting to take off, because of things that "weren't quite proper." He explained that they were working with people that "didn't have their best interests at heart." Kendricks, however, initially decided to stay in the group because he was worried he would not get the support he needed if he left the group. Kendricks also expressed the fact that his relationship with Berry Gordy was less than cordial. "Berry Gordy is a man I don't know, I only met him about three times," he said, but "I know he didn't particularly care for me." Kendricks stated that he did not agree with many decisions that were made.
Following one final altercation with Williams and Franklin during a run at the Copacabana nightclub in November 1970, Kendricks walked off after the first night and didn't return, and it was mutually decided he would leave the group. While working on his first solo album, Kendricks recorded one last hit single with the Temptations, 1971's "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)". By the time the record reached #1 on the US pop charts in April 1971, Kendricks had signed a solo deal with Motown's Tamla imprint and was preparing the release of his first solo album, All By Myself. However, many of his problems with Motown would reoccur.
Solo career and later years
Kendricks' solo career began slowly; he endured two years of singles that missed the Top 40, while The Temptations continued with their string of Norman Whitfield-helmed hits (one of which, "Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are)", was written as a jab towards Kendricks and Ruffin). Despite enjoying only a modicum of commercial success and radio airplay, Kendricks's 1972 album People... Hold On (recorded with his touring group, The Young Senators, composed of Jimi Dougans, Frank Hooker, LeRoy Fleming, Wornell Jones, David Lecraft, James Drummer Johnson and John Engram) was a cornerstone of DJ playlists in downtown New York's nascent disco scene. The expansive, eight-minute take on "Girl, You Need A Change Of Mind", which peaked at number thirteen on the soul chart, was a particular favorite at David Mancuso's Loft. The single was later remade by R&B singer D'Angelo for the Get on the Bus Soundtrack. As the dance craze seeped through into other cities, Kendricks scored a #1 pop hit in 1973 with the Frank Wilson-produced "Keep on Truckin'". As well as reaching #18 in the UK, it sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Further hits included 1974's "Boogie Down" (US #2, UK #39) and another million selling release, "Son of Sagittarius" (US #28) from the same year, 1975's "Shoeshine Boy" (US #18), and 1976's "He's a Friend" (US #36). Another notable song is "Intimate Friends" (1977), which was sampled for the Alicia Keys song "Unbreakable", "A Penny for My Thoughts" by Common, Sparkle's "Time to Move on" on her self-titled first studio album, and for Sweet Sable's "Old Time's Sake" from the soundtrack for the 1994 2pac film, Above the Rim. Erykah Badu also sampled "Intimate Friends" for her song "Fall in Love (Your Funeral)", as well as his song "My People... Hold on" for her song "My People" on her album New Amerykah Part One (4th World War).
Exasperated by a lack of creative and financial control, Kendricks left Motown in 1978, with the requirement of signing away the rights to his royalties. He moved first to Arista Records, and later to Atlantic Records. By this time, his popularity had waned, and he was also gradually losing his voice as a result of chain smoking.
He and David Ruffin briefly re-joined the Temptations for a 1982 reunion tour. In an interview with Tom Meros, Dennis Edwards, Kendricks's former Temptations band mate, claimed that Kendricks had issues hitting his falsetto notes during recording sessions for the reunion album. Because of his singing difficulty, Edwards said that Kendricks went to a physician to examine his vocal ability. The physician discovered a "pin drop" of cancer on one of his lungs. However, Kendricks reportedly refused to undergo chemotherapy at the time because of fear that he would lose his hair.
Ruffin and Kendrick (Kendricks dropped the "s" from his stage name during the 1980s) reportedly met up one night when Ruffin went to watch Kendrick perform in a nightclub; Kendrick spotted Ruffin in the crowd, pointed him out, and invited him to come up on stage and perform with him. Afterward they talked about touring on their own and recorded an album as a duo for RCA in 1988.
Earlier, in 1985, they participated in the Hall & Oates live album Live at The Apollo recorded at a benefit at New York City's Apollo Theater; and sang with the duo at Live Aid in Philadelphia and the MTV Video Music Awards in New York. Hall & Oates have cited Kendrick and Ruffin specifically, and the Temptations in general, as a major influence.
In 1989, Kendrick, Ruffin, and their Temptations bandmates were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There, Kendrick and Ruffin made plans with fellow former Temptation Dennis Edwards to tour and record as "Ruffin/Kendrick/Edwards, Former Leads of The Temptations." The Ruffin/Kendrick/ Edwards project was cut short in 1991, when Kendrick was diagnosed with lung cancer and David Ruffin died of a drug overdose, although Kendrick and Edwards continued to tour for the remainder of 1991.
Death
In late 1991, Kendricks, by now living in his native Birmingham, Alabama, underwent surgery to have one of his lungs removed in hopes of preventing the spread of the cancer. He continued to tour through the summer of 1992, when he fell ill again and was hospitalized. Kendricks died of lung cancer in Birmingham on October 5, 1992 at age 52. He was survived by his three children: Parris, Aika, and Paul Kendricks. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.
Legacy
In 1998, NBC aired The Temptations, a four-hour television miniseries based upon an autobiographical book by Otis Williams. Kendricks was portrayed by actor Terron Brooks.
On October 16, 1999, Eddie Kendrick Memorial Park, located on the corner of 18th Street and 4th Avenue North, was dedicated to Birmingham native Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations. The park uses Kendricks' family name sans the "s", which was added early in his career. The memorial features a bronze sculpture of Kendricks by local artist Ron McDowell, as well as sculptures of the other Temptations, set into a granite wall. Inscribed on the granite are the names of Temptation's hit songs. Recorded music can be heard throughout the park, featuring songs by Kendricks and the Temptations.
