Mutant X [TV] (2001-2004)
S01E20 “Deadly Desire”
[spoilers]
Sci-fi/action
Tom McCamus plays a main role in season 1
Lorna Templeton (Krista Allen) is on the run from the GSA. She reveals that she is a kind of feral we have not seen before, she is part scorpion. She has stingers in her wrists. Perhaps it would ruin the tone of the show she had a more realistic stinger on her butt. But really, why am I even bothering to worry about Mutant X being even half way realistic at this point? Lorna uses a different power on another GS Agent (Ted Whittall), she secretes a pink vapour from her neck. Scorpions use venom to paralyse or kill their prey. Shalimar and Jesse arrive on the scene. They fight off some more GS Agents but cannot find the New Mutant they were looking for.
At Sanctuary, Adam and Emma hack into the GSA but can’t find any trace of a New Mutant being brought in. They do find a mention of the GSA trying to obtain something called Anomite(?) which sounds like a phoney science fiction element, but is actually a virus that can take down any security system. “Any” is a bit of a stretch. If you know enough about computers and how the virus works, you can come up with a way to defend against it.
Brennan and Shalimar play a game of pool, and Brennan uses his powers to cheat. But then he spots his old “friend” Tony (Matthew MacFadzean) at the bar and confronts him. It’s neat that they brought a guest star from the pilot back, as most actors seem to have a single episode only deal on this show. Tony tells Brennan he’s in love with a con woman and tries to get him in on the deal, but he refuses.
The GSA are also dealing with a missing person. Halloran (Jim Codrington) tells Mason that they cannot find Agent Ames and another agent died of a cardiac arrest. Mason is back to being the typical uncaring boss and says that Agent fitness standards need to be raised. Halloran has good news about the Anomite, a disgruntled government scientist is willing to meet. As ever the GSA’s connection to the rest of the government is vague at best.
Halloran meets with Dr Tork (Clyde Whitham) and they are all set to exchange briefcases. Dr Tork opens his and there is something blue and glowing inside. So now I’m confused. They consistently talk about this thing as if it’s some kind of rare element, but if it’s a computer virus shouldn’t it be on a disc? Mutant X catch wind of the meeting, but so does Lorna and her cronies. Dr Tork is killed, Shalimar gets shot, Lorna’s team gets the virus and Halloran at least reclaims his briefcase of money.
Emma treats Shalimar’s wound in the lab. Shalimar is wearing the ever famous Lab Underwear. I hope she was already wearing them under her clothes and didn’t have to change into them while injured before she could be treated. Emma has a magic flashing pen that we’re probably supposed to believe heals wounds magically. But at least she’s wearing gloves while doing a medical procedure, which is something.
Adam finds out that Dr Tork was Director of the Anomite project and felt he wasn’t getting enough recognition so decided to sell the prototype. I feel this is a slight variation on the theme of “I know too much about science to buy this nonsense”. Replace “science” with “business”. Come on, writers, go work at a corporation for a week and you’ll find out that directors are too important, rich, and involved in other things to do stuff like this. Now if he was a disgruntled project manager or other miscellaneous employee working on the project, I might buy it. Or if he’d been fired for misconduct and swiped the prototype on his way out, perhaps. What’s more, only the prototype exists and there’s apparently no way to make more of this stuff. Why is that always the case?
Halloran gets a telling off from Mason. He has to break the news that former agent Ames killed Dr Tork.
Brennan confronts Tony but he refuses to tell him anything. Brennan follows him back to an extravagant apartment. He meets Lorna there and tries to get the briefcase but she seduces him with her powers. Tony is jealous, even though she seemed to be with both him and former GS Agent Ames. She uses her scorpion stinger wrists and Tony dies instantly. A death by scorpion venom is unlikely to be so quick and peaceful.
Lorna has stolen Brennan’s commlink ring but Emma manages to connect to him telempathically. Which proves slightly embarrassing. Meanwhile Brennan is scarily obsessed with Lorna.
Halloran tries to strike a deal with Ames. Mason isn’t happy about him promising a cash reward.
Despite the embarrassment, the Mutant X team decide to spy on Brennan and find he is at an apartment owned by one Lorna Templeton. I don’t know how they tracked him down, as his commlink shouldn’t be working when it’s on someone else’s finger. We learn that Lorna’s DNA was spliced with DNA of the Androctonus austalis scorpion, which she correctly identifies as an arachnid. She says her DNA was spliced before her birth. There seems to be talk of DNA splicing done before birth and after in the show. I don’t have first hand experience, but I’m pretty sure before is easier. Adam ruins the scientific believability by saying that the treatment was to fix her compromised immune system. I’d be much more inclined to believe this if it was to correct a heritable immunodeficiency disease. But they use the same phrasing to talk about Mason’s condition.
Shalimar walks in wearing a sling. Which is a bit odd as she didn’t seem to have a broken arm or sprained wrist earlier. Adam explains about pheromones and believes Lorna may have Brennan under her control. It is true that pheromones can prompt a change in behaviour of others. Adam fears she may kill him if he stays long enough.
Emma and Jesse go to intercept the Anomite deal. Halloran wants Ames as part of the deal. Ames doesn’t want to go with him, but Lorna is happy to part with him. Emma and Lorna end up fighting over the briefcase, and Brennan sides with Lorna and attacks Emma.
Adam creates an antivirus to counteract the effect of Lorna’s pheromones on Ames. He paints this on his skin and it seems to work. But a pheromone is not a virus, so it would be impossible to make an antivirus for it. Plus pheromones don’t work like a switch, Ames would come to his senses naturally once he was away from Lorna.
Brennan visits Mason at Genomex and strikes a deal with him. He will not, however, shake Brennan’s hand.
Shalimar confronts Brennan. He asks about Emma and tells her that he still cares about the team but can’t be a part of them any more. Shalimar gives him a goodbye kiss, and it turns out she was wearing Adam’s hokey antivirus as a lipstick. He comes to his senses and tries to take the briefcase and leave Lorna, but she attacks him with her scorpion stingers.
Adam and Shalimar rescue Brennan and get him back to Sanctuary. Emma uses her powers on him to cool him down. I’m not sure that would work as 1. he is unconscious and 2. Wouldn’t she only be able to change his perception of temperature, not his physical temperature?
The GSA capture Lorna. Halloran tries to get her to tell him where the Anomite is but just as in so many other cases, he is so slow to put a sub dermal governor on her that she has time to use her powers on him. Mason joins them, and Halloran threatens him with a gun. They restrain him and leave with the cash.
The whole team ends up bursting into Brennan’s bedroom and they make up. They have the Anomite and of course it isn’t going to be used, it was only a macguffin after all.

Time is Nothing. We can’t Change the Past, But we can Create a New One in Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Prisoner X’ (Trailer)
“This used to be a facility back in the 50s where they did all kinds of experiments. Mind control, genetic manipulation, we’re the lab rats now.” In ‘Prisoner X’ as the world rages in war and civil strife, a CIA agent arrives at a secret underground prison to interrogate a time-travelling terrorist, who she believes is responsible for the unfolding catastrophe.

Jim Codrington from Bomb Girls and Rookie Blue was at my graduation tonight. I quietly and discretely freaked out a bit. He smiled and nodded at me.
