Felix Cavaliere Relays Rascal Energy Voicing Joy & Peace
Felix Cavaliere exerts an energetic appeal that has not waned since The Rascals, then known as The Young Rascals, first made an impact on the music scene in 1965 with “I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore” followed by “Good Lovin’.” Expressing peace, love, and happiness, the music has had a broad attraction for all ages. “A BREATH OF FRESH AIR”
with Sandy Kaye
MON 2:00PM‬ & FRI 10:30PM
This week:
Joey Dee and the Starliters were a hot act in 1962 with the hit “Peppermint Twist.” — The Beatles opened for them and Dee helped out a young Jimi Hendrix.
Born Joseph DiNicola in Passaic, NJ, Dee teamed with veteran producer Henry Glover to cut "Peppermint Twist" for Roulette Records, and the huge hit led to a starring role in the film Hey, Let's Twist.
Most of Dee's hits, including a supercharged revival of the Isley Brothers hit "Shout" in 1962, were firmly in the Twist mode, although he took a successful stab at a softer sound that year with a Johnny Nash tune, "What Kind of Love Is This."
Dee gave several future stars early breaks by welcoming them into the rotating lineup of the Starliters, including the Ronettes, three-quarters of the Young Rascals, and Jimi Hendrix.
Joey Dee joins us this week to share his story.

Right after we got hired at the Peppermint Lounge, Columbia Pictures came down there to make Hey, Let's Twist, a teenage dance movie that starred Joey Dee and the Starliters. We were thrilled, of course, because we thought this would be our break, too. The Starliters loved us so much that Joey Dee and David Brigati wanted the three of us to play their girlfriends in the movie. We even went down to the set to meet the casting director, but he took one look at our complexions and walked away. "We can't use them," he told Joey Dee. "They're too light to play black girls and too dark to play white girls. The audience wouldn't know if they were supposed to be white or black."
We were heartbroken of course. Losing our chance at movie stardom was devastating - especially after the flop of our first record - and we sank pretty low for a few weeks. We still went down to watch the filming, but it killed us to see the white actresses they'd hired to play the Starliters' girlfriends. We were probably the only girls in New York who cried all the way through Hey, Let's Twist.

"AND WE ALL LOVED NICE RAW R&B, AND IT WAS THE MOST ACCESSIBLE MUSIC TO PLAY FOR US."
PIC INFO: Spotlight on English musician Dick Taylor, founding member and lead guitarist for THE PRETTY THINGS, and one-time member of THE ROLLING STONES (1962-1962), from the portrait gallery of '60s rock & pop magazine"Beat Instrumental," c. 1965.
DICK TAYLOR: "The same thing applies, very much, to the Pretty Things. [There was] never any question of arguing as to what direction we were going to go, because we all kind of knew what that was. We all knew what we regarded as hip music, and it coincided very much. One of the great things about art school was that everybody at lunch time would come and bring their records in. There was a lot of different styles being played. Someone would have, like, Thelonious Monk at Town Hall. I really got into that. Another guy brought Joey Dee and the Starliters.  No one went, I'm not listening to this shit or anything.
But having said that, what kind of to a certain extent controlled what we played was what we could play. And we all loved nice raw R&B, and it was the most accessible music to play for us.  And we'd all sort of listen to folky stuff and try to play that.  But the thing we really wanted to do was electric guitars and make noise.  And that's the stuff we were most into."

It operated as a Lumberyard for 104 years and is now home to Rails Events and Catering Hall. Beitel built two long buildings for retail space and lumber bins lining the spur tracks. He also received, on his land, a spur of the narrow gauge rail tracks long enough for three cars to load and unload materials. It is now home to Rails… a Café at the Depot. Beitel sold a piece of his land to the SA&AP where, in 1915, a new masonry depot was built. Most of the original passenger depot burned down in 1913. He established his lumberyard at 425 Clay Street in 1889. Beitel owned lumberyards in San Antonio and came to buy land along the tracks which ran down North Street. The original depot was a wooden structure. Kerrville was the last stop on the SA&AP Railway with a turntable built to manually turn the trains. A seven gun salute, Mexican band and barbecue started up as the whole town celebrated. Ramblin’ McCoys and Oar-thers
Old New 4: Bobby Fuller Four: (out of El Paso) I Fought The Law (1966) beside the hit single this lp also includes the amazingly catchy Let Her Dance. This lp crackles with excellent mid60’s non-flower-power or Brit influenced songs. A one-hit wonder mainly because Bobby Fuller died under mysterious circumstances on July 18, 1966. His body was found beaten inside his car parked just outside of…

EeeeeEEEEEE
I have been listening to “Pepermint Twist” by The Sweet when on 2:29 I’ve heard EEEEEeeeeee which reminded me of Joan Jett’s “Shout” on 2:08 . Some time ago I had discovered that it was a cover of a song by The Isley Brothers. So I have come to the conclusion that “Pepermint Twist” was also an Isley Brothers’s cover. But it turned out to be a cover of a different band - Joey Dee & The Starliters. And then I realised that  The Starliters must had covered Shout. And they had. Their cover doesn’t have EEEEEeeeee but it’s still in the original on 3:48

On the Unsuspected Significance of The Peppermint Twist
On the Unsuspected Significance of The Peppermint Twist
60 years ago (late 1961) a group named Joey Dee and the Starliters released a new variation on the Twist craze spawned by Chubby Checker the previous year. By January 1962, their single “The Peppermint Twist” went to #1 on the pop charts. If you’re like me, you’ve known the song all your life, without knowing or even wondering much about the “Peppermint” part of the song’s hook and title. Sounds…
