Praise What Comes
...At the end there may be no answers and only a few very simple questions: did I love, finish my task in the world? Learn at least one of the many names of God? At the intersections, the boundaries where one life began and another ended, the jumping-off places between fear and possibility, at the ragged edges of pain, did I catch the smallest glimpse of the holy?
~ Jeanne Lohmann from "Praise What Comes" in THE LIGHT OF INVISIBLE BODIES

Gustaf Gründgens in M (Fritz Lang, 1931)
Cast: Peter Lorre, Ellen Widman, Inge Landgut, Otto Wernicke, Theodor Loos, Gustaf Gründgens, Friedrich Gnaß, Fritz Odemar, Paul Kemp, Theo Lingen, Rudolf Blümner, Georg John, Franz Stein, Ernst Stahl-Nachbaur. Screenplay: Thea von Harbou, Fritz Lang. Cinematography: Fritz Arno Wagner. Art direction: Emil Hasler, Karl Vollbrecht. Film editing: Paul Falkenberg.
Point of view is everything in a thriller. Let the viewer see events through the wrong eyes, and suspense goes out the window. The remarkable thing about Lang's great thriller is that the point of view changes so often. It starts with that of anxious parents, knowing that a child-killer is on the loose, then narrows to one particular parent, waiting for her daughter to come home from school for lunch. But then we see the object of her fears, her daughter, making contact with a strange man, and our suspense builds as we return to the worried mother. But as strongly as we sympathize with the mother, we also eventually learn to focus our anxieties elsewhere: on the beleaguered police, on innocent victims of people's suspicions, on the criminal underworld harassed by the police, and eventually even on the murderer himself. There are even moments when, as he becomes the object of the manhunt, trapped in the attic of a building swarming with the criminals in search of him, we find ourselves semi-consciously rooting for him to escape. Then we find ourselves rooting for the criminals to capture him and to escape being caught by the cops. And then, when he is put on trial by the criminals, we root for the police to arrive and rescue him. In short, the movie is a study in the ways in which sympathy can be manipulated. Lang and his soon-to-be-ex-wife Thea von Harbou wrote the screenplay, and the atmosphere of the film is superbly maintained by the cinematography of Fritz Arno Wagner and the sets of Emil Hasler and Karl Vollbrecht. But none of it would work without the presence of some extraordinary performers, starting with Peter Lorre as the sniveling, obsessed Hans Beckert: a career-defining performance in many ways, considering that Lorre had been known for comic roles on stage before Lang made him a movie star. Then there's Otto Wernicke as Inspector Lohmann, whose performance was so memorable that Lang brought him back as the same character in The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933), stereotyping Wernicke as a cop for much of his career. And Gustav Gründgens, the imperious leader of the criminal faction, who later became identified with the role of Mephistopheles in stage and screen versions of Goethe's Faust (Peter Gorski, 1960) -- not to mention in Klaus Mann's 1936 novel, Mephisto (and István Szabó's 1981 film version), based on Gründgens's embrace of the Nazis to advance his career.

Study Las Ventanas Homes, New Homes In Albuquerque, Nm
KOB-TV hosted the pair for a 30-minute debate on topics like abortion, crime, cannabis and oil and fuel production in southern New Mexico. The opponents spent about eight minutes on the first two questions, which centered on the federal response to the largest fire new homes albuquerque in state history. U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez, a Democrat from Las Vegas, N.M., is making an attempt to maintain her seat within the newly drawn district, one which beforehand contained all of northern New Mexico, plus parts of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.
Freddie Mac publishes a month-to-month home price index that measures the change in home prices for real property markets in the united states The report assigns December 2000 with a benchmark of 100 and then compares the month-to-month change in housing costs in every state and metro area to a hundred. Metro Albuquerque is also listed as top-of-the-line places to buy rental property for cash flow and appreciation. The area’s steady inhabitants and job progress, together with reasonably priced real property prices, offer pretty much every thing a remote actual estate investor may ask for.
Northrop Grumman, Intel, and Sandia National Laboratories are continuously hiring. The Albuquerque Public Schools faculty district caters to over ninety,000 students’ instructional needs and is praised for its diversity. Patrick Lohmann has been a reporter since 2007, when he wrote stories for $15 apiece at a now-defunct tabloid in Gallup, his hometown. Since then, he is worked at UNM's Daily Lobo, the Albuquerque Journal and the Syracuse Post-Standard. Along the finest way, he's won several state and national awards for his reporting, together with for an exposé on a cult-like Alcoholics Anonymous group and a function on an Upstate New York militia member who died of COVID-19.
Non-Hispanic white accounted for 38.3% of the racial makeup of the city. Of the 62,780 acre-feet per 12 months of the water in the upper Colorado River basin entitled to municipalities in New Mexico by the Upper Colorado River Basin Compact, Albuquerque owns forty eight,200. The water is delivered to the Rio Grande by the San Juan–Chama Project. The project's development was initiated by laws signed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, and was completed in 1971. This diversion project transports water under the continental divide from Navajo Lake to Lake Heron on the Rio Chama, a tributary of the Rio Grande. In the previous a lot of this water was resold to downstream homeowners in Texas.
Desirable options like our spacious kitchen island designs will call the family to assemble round for snack time. We also offer versatile areas, including lofts that are good in your personalised home theater or office. Recreation and out of doors fun awaits the entire new homes albuquerque household on the Cibola National Forest, the Albuquerque Biological Park, the Elena Gallegos Park, and the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park. The annually-recurring International Balloon Fiesta, the world’s largest gathering of hot-air balloons going down each October, is a superb excuse to spend high quality time along with your children and pals.
Since Route 66 was decommissioned within the 1980s, the only remaining US freeway in Albuquerque, unsigned US-85, shares its alignment with I-25. US-550 splits off to the northwest from I-25/US-85 in Bernalillo. Green chile is broadly out there in restaurants, including national fast-food chains at areas in the metropolis. Albuquerque has an active restaurant scene, and local restaurants obtain statewide consideration, several of them having turn out to be chains. The metropolis is the headquarters of Blake's Lotaburger, Little Anita's, Twisters, Dion's, Boba Tea Company, and Sadie's.
Albuquerque has one of many highest elevations of any major metropolis in the united states, ranging from 4,900 feet above sea degree near the Rio Grande to over 6,700 ft within the foothill areas of Sandia Heights and Glenwood Hills. Albuquerque is among the greatest locations to build wealth due to the metro area’s low price of dwelling and high quality of life, according to Albuquerque Economic Development. In fact, the Albuquerque metropolitan space new home builders in albuquerque ranks under the national index for key price of dwelling measurements including groceries, utilities, transportation, and health care. There are a selection of ways in which real property traders can analyze completely different markets throughout the united states to determine the potential demand for rental property. Among these varied tools are monitoring the historical change in native housing prices and the affordability of housing in every market.
Home Partners is helping individuals get into great homes, in neighborhoods they love, with the chance to construct a more secure monetary future. The website missingmoney.com is authorized new home builders in albuquerque by New Mexico and different states to list owners of unclaimed property. There is no price to search for your property or to request a claim kind.
Located NW of Albuquerque, Rio Rancho is Albuquerque’s largest neighbor. With a growing population of approximately 55,000—60,000, this metropolis is enjoying fast development and strong financial growth. Intel is the city’s largest employer, and has been largely responsible for the economic prosperity enjoyed by the group. Housing prices begin within the $140,000—160,000 price range and prime out in the $600,000 – $800,000 range. The neighborhood has a variety of new construction in all value ranges and styles. Welcome to Albuquerque, N.M., a excessive desert metropolis – the state's largest – with a historic core and a bustling business center within the coronary heart of New Mexico's Technology Corridor.

TV: The Alienist (primera temporada, 2018)
Tumblr media Tumblr media

From Here Jeanne Lohmann for all that has been, thanks for all that shall be, yes - Dag Hammerskjold, Markings No one who looks back is fit, the gospel says, for the kingdom. Renouncing my small hope of getting in, disqualified by all that turns me round in thanks for grace or chance that led me here, I can't see where's the harm. So far I've not been changed to salt and am no pillar in the road, so far the winter breaks to sounds of streams ahead. The past is iron and roses, health and sickness as in a marriage vow. I'm pledged to all that was, and to this moment's breath, the next.

Lust in the Dust (Paul Bartel, 1984)
Cast: Divine, Tab Hunter, Lainie Kazan, Geoffrey Lewis, Henry Silva, Cesar Romero, Gina Gallego, Nedra Volz, Courtney Gains. Screenplay: Philip John Taylor. Cinematography: Paul Lohmann. Production design: Walter Pickette. Film editing: Alan Toomayan. Music: Peter Matz.
The presence of Divine in the cast of Lust in the Dust, and of Tab Hunter, who co-starred with her in John Waters's 1981 movie Polyester, might make you think this is one of Waters's films. Too bad it wasn't: It would probably have been funnier and trashier, but Waters chose not to direct a film for which he hadn't written the script. Paul Bartel's movie might be described as “Waters adjacent”: Edith Massey, another member of Waters's stock company, was originally set to play the role of Big Ed, but died before filming started and was replaced by Nedra Volz. Still, Lust in the Dust is a reasonably funny, reasonably raunchy, and certainly trashy Western spoof, with Hunter playing a character who's obviously a parody of Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name from the Sergio Leone movies. Hunter and his husband, Allan Glazer, also produced the film.

The mad dash to the ocean
Have you ever thought about what it would be like if you were the only human on earth? Maybe a more digestible question is have you ever thought about being stranded alone on a deserted island? Personally, I would probably accidentally eat poisonous berries and die. Especially if I was young, I don’t think my survival instincts would keep me alive for very long. Humans can thrive when they are able to rely on the teachings or inventions of one another. Some animals like bears also rely on some degree of parental teaching and guidance. However, many other animals are just thrown out into the world right from birth and survival is contingent on their ability to follow their instincts. These species are known as precocial. Turtles are precocial and their natural instincts have specifically always amazed me.
Turtles are fairly isolated creatures but an aspect of being born into a large group benefits them. When they are hatching, the process of getting out of the buried nest requires many turtles working at once and can take a day or two (Spotila, 2004). Turtles near the top to move the sand around, causing it to fall to the bottom of the nest. This slowly raises the bottom of the nest up, making it easier to get out (Spotila, 2004). This video shows what the crazy emergence looks like.
youtube

Once they emerge from the nest its all about cues. I’ve always found it amazing how turtles find the ocean and how they move with a sense of urgency, like they know a predator is lurking. The first cue they have to travel is temperature. They travel to the ocean at night because of their preference for a cooler temperature. Second, they have a preference for light and so they move towards the ocean where the sky above is generally lighter (Spotila, 2004). Weather and humans can impact the light cue, luckily there are other cues to direct them. They also have a preference for moving downslope, which usually brings them towards the ocean (Spotila, 2004).
Tumblr media

Once entering the water, they naturally begin swimming. I find it fascinating that turtles can not only crawl, but swim as well, all in the first day or so of their lives. They are experts at navigating waters. They swim head on into waves which propels them forward (Spotila, 2004). In the open ocean they may exploit currents like ocean gyres to navigate migratory routes with minimal effort, like the turtle in Finding Nemo!
Tumblr media
Crush, the turtle from Finding Nemo turtle uses the Eastern Australia Current to navigate easily. Source: Flickr
As they get further from the coast they follow earth’s magnetic field (Irwin and Lohmann, 2005). Female turtles also rely on the magnetic field to return to the same beach they were born at to lay their own eggs (Irwin and Lohmann, 2005). This may be ten or more years later, but they are able to navigate using their internal compass they derive from these environmental abiotic cues.
Tumblr media
Evidence! Turtle trails in the sun are evident when the sun begins to rise and their journey is complete. Source: Pinterest
Precocial animals have a pretty harsh start to their lives, yet nature is amazingly abundant with these species. What other types of precocial species are there? How do you think humans influence the abiotic cues these animals rely on?

See through walls with free software
Tumblr media
Spoiler alert for a 21-year-old novel!
In Neal Stephenson's amazing, seminal CRYPTONOMICON, a key plot-point relates to Van Eck Freaking (AKA TEMPEST), in which tuned radio antennas are used to read a computer screen through a wall by intercepting its electronic noise.
Van Eck Freaking is real! And you can do it at home!
The GNU Radio project is a free software implementation of a software-defined radio: a radio whose tuning and de/modulating properties are determined by code, rather than by the vibrational frequencies of a crystal.
Tempestsdr is Martin Marinov's six-year old, Java-based implementation of TEMPEST using GNU Radio:
https://github.com/martinmarinov/TempestSDR
Recently, Federico 'Larroca' La Rocca reimplemented the tool in a new package called GR Tempest:
https://github.com/git-artes/gr-tempest
It's designed to eavesdrop on keyboards, HDMI, VGA, and other electronic I/O systems through solid barriers.
All of this is cool and gnarly, but even better is the historical context of GNU Radio.
In 1992, EFF fought the Bernstein case, the case that legalized civilian access to working cryptography, striking down the NSA's longstanding ban on crypto.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/04/remembering-case-established-code-speech
EFF's winning argument was the "code is speech" - that is, source code is a form of expressive speech for the purposes of the First Amendment and thus any law that controls source code infringes on our Constitutional rights.
That 9th Circuit Appeals decision paved the way for all the security tools you use today - everything from checking to make sure that your pacemaker upgrade hasn't been tampered with to keeping your financial transactions secure.
GNU Radio was created by Eric Blossom and funded by John Gilmore as a way to use the Bernstein decision to lock in freedom for software defined radios and the general purpose computers they ran on.
They understood that the regulatory model for radios -  designing them to only operate on specific frequencies - would come into conflict with software freedom as SDRs proliferated. Eventually, commercial radio devices would just be computers running SDR code.
When that happened, the only way to ensure these devices were incapable of straying from their approved use would be to prohibit users from changing the code on those computers - and since ANY computer could be an SDR, this collision could mean lockdown for ALL computers.
The idea of GNU Radio was to have a functional, free/open SDR when that day came. It was possible that a court would find that compiled code was also protected speech, but sourcecode is obviously more speechlike, and so FLOSS tracked better with the Bernstein decision.
This may sound like a remote possibility, but within a couple years of the project's founding, this EXACT scenario cropped up.
The Broadcast Flag was an effort to do an end-run around the fact that it's illegal for US terrestrial broadcasters to encrypt their signals.
Instead, the broadcasters, studios and CE/IT companies proposed that the unencrypted signals would have a "flag" (a single bit) that all devices capable of being a digital TV tuner would have to look for.
If it was set to "1," these devices would have to encrypt the signal AFTER they received it, and not allow unencrypted output. Basically, every device manufacturer in the country would be required by law to PRETEND that over-the-air broadcasts were encrypted.
And since ALL PCs were capable of being a DTV receiver with the addition of a software defined radio, that meant that we were on a track to banning all computers unless they were designed to refuse to run programs that hadn't been approved by a corporate consortium.
My first day on the job at EFF was going to the very first Broadcast Flag meeting (actually, it was the day BEFORE I was hired and we were still working on the paperwork, but this was important so I got on a plane to LA with Seth Schoen and Fred von Lohmann).
The Broadcast Protection Discussion Group was the most smoke-filled, dirty-dealing, skullduggery-filled room I ever sat in. Over the months and years that followed, I saw so much dirty-tricking, so many double-bluffs and backstabs. It was amazing and horrible.
And what's more, despite our best efforts to head off this disaster, they succeeded, and got the @FCC to regulate the Broadcast Flag into existence (with the small win that FCC commissioners, not Hollywood studios, would be in charge of what programs were allowed).
But EFF has a diversity of tactics at its disposal. Where activism failed, technology and law prevailed. We sued the FCC along with the American Library Association and Public Knowledge and won!
https://www.eff.org/broadcastflag
And part of that victory turned on the fact that GNU Radio proved that the FCC wasn't just regulating radio devices - they had arrogated to themselves the power to regulate any device with a general-purpose computer in it.
The best part is GNU Radio is still finding new niches to fill, demonstrating the incredible power and potential of Turing-completeness. It's a powerful system - and just as importantly, it's a powerful weapon in the War on General Purpose Computing.

Popronde 2018: Nijmegen
Popronde 2018:
