Cotton Monster - Jennifer Strunge

“I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and have been sewing dolls, puppets, pillows and such ever since I was a wee little girl. During my senior year at the Maryland Institute College of Art I began making quilts covered with three-dimensional eyeball forms and giant soft-sculptural monsters made from found blankets, clothes and bedding. Shortly after graduating in 2004, I refined my creature making technique and began my original Cotton Monster line. Ever since, I have been sewing as fast as my hands will allow, selling one-of-a-kind monsters, kitty cats, and more—locally, across the US and all around the globe!

Aiming to give new life to secondhand sweatshirts, velour track suits and polo shirts of the world, most of my creations are constructed using clean thrifted clothing as well as sheets and fabric remnants. Each is handmade one at a time, on my Bernina sewing machine, stuffed with brand new super-soft polyester fiberfill and finished with hand-stitching, all in my tiny attic home studio.”

Cotton Monster instead of using a fluffy material which has long hair, she uses a material that is soft but looks rather stiff. Strunge makes her plushies look rather silly by making the mouth and eyes exceptionally large, while the arms are around three times longer than the legs. 

Cotton Monster worked on many projects such as : “Nanotecture”,  “Designs for Land of Nod” and many more.

Nanotecture 2013 : It is a collaborative work between myself and sculptor Jonathan Latiano, a site-specific installation created at School 33 Art Center as part of the Co-Lab(oration) project and funded by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Nanotecture addresses notions of converging biological/geological forms, architectural intervention, points of transition and what it means to come upon something. This project created a new gallery space at the School 33 Art Center in what was once a telephone booth.velour, faux fur, recycled t-shirts, polyester stuffing, wood, foam, joint compound, paint, fans, and lights.

Designs for Land of Nod 2011- 2013 : I was asked to create an exclusive plush line for Land of Nod, children's decor company. I created these original designs and prototypes. Land of Nod, then had them manufactured and sold worldwide over the 2012 and 2013 holiday seasons. The Giant Racoon was comissioned for the window display of Land of Nod's 2012 holiday pop-up shop in SoHo, NYC.
