I'm probably more wary of posting any of my local bands - especially if I haven't heard of them. Two days ago, I really listened intently to Go By Ocean before posting.
Shapes Freely (Nevada City, California) had it worse. I listened to "Dream Reality" nearly 3 times. I just couldn't believe it was this good and so relatively unknown. This is baroque pop at its finest. Brook Caballero has brought in a slew of musicians - none of which I've heard of. And it looks like "Shapes Freely" is self-released. There are literally no markers that might otherwise guide me in any direction.
So, I have zero idea who Brooke Caballero is. All I can tell you is that he is a pop smith of the first order. I mean, this makes me think of Jorge Elbrecht, Pernice Brothers, Eric Matthews and American Music Club. If you want to go a little deeper, then check out K. Campbell.

Vanguardias europeas
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cubismo: (Francia, 1907-1914).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Futurismo: (Italia, 1909-1944).
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Surrealismo: (Francia, 1924-1940).
Tumblr media Tumblr media

10/18/23.
I've truly enjoyed following the musical career of Roberto Lange, known by the stage name Helado Negro (Brooklyn, New York). I first listened/bought back in 2019 - the excellent Live at KCRW.
Now comes "Phasor" and while there is only one song, you can get a sense of a more electronic pop approach. "LFO" has the shuffle of Yo La Tengo with the vocals and melody of John Maus. In some ways this also recalls Sweden's The Legends. And finally, I have to mention Jorge Elbrecht whose music I've been enjoying a lot lately.
This will again be released by 4AD and is set to be released in February 2024. I also see that Helado Negro will be playing in Sacramento right around the release date (Harlow's).

New Wild Nothing Album!!!
One of my all time favorites, Wild Nothing announced last night his 5th studio album, Hold LP will be upon us October 27th. With contributions from longtime collaborator Jorge Elbrecht, Tommy Davidson of Beach Fossils and Hatchie’s Harriette Pilbeam, first single “Headlights On” features an acid house-worthy bass groove and breakbeat that prove Tatum is playing for the rafters.
At the surface this sounds like a decidedly dancier Wild Nothing, but listening to the lyrics proves he has retained his same song writing sensibilities.
The rest of the record was mixed by Geoff Swan, who listeners might know for his work with Caroline Polachek and Charli XCX. “I reached out to Geoff because I wanted to find someone that could help me make this sound as big as possible,” he said.
Glancing through the album notes we also see backing vocals on other tracks from Captured Tracks label mates Molly Burch & Becca Mancari. Looking forward to more jams to drop.
Wild Nothing - Hold LP is available to pre-order on limited split black & milky clear vinyl w/ a printed euro sleeve and poster insert from his bandcamp & Captured Tracks, or a variety of colored variants from other distributors

The 90s vibes are strong on Hatchie’s latest single, ‘Rooftops.’
Featuring NY singer/songwriter Liam Benzvi, the Aussie singer takes the rooftops theme to heart as her silhouette dances against a grainy slideshow filled with retro-style transitions and sparkling city skylines, in perfect sync with the track's exhilarating feel, eerily reminiscent of George Michael’s ‘Freedom 90’ or something off Caroline Polachek’s Desire, I Want to Turn Into You.
‘Rooftops’ is from the deluxe edition of Hatchie’s latest album, Giving the World Away. As Harriette Pilbeam explains (via Stereogum):
‘I wrote, recorded and mixed Giving The World Away with Joe [Agius] and Jorge [Elbrecht] in 2020, with Joe and I recording in Brisbane and Jorge mixing in Denver. We wrapped everything up in December, with plans to release in April 2022. In the meantime, the three of us were finally all able to get back in a room together in 2021, with no specific plans for the outcome. After five intense writing days in the bitter Denver winter, we ended up with about 12 new ideas, some of which we felt fit perfectly into the world of the long-finished album. It was too late to make any additions at that stage, but we felt it would be a shame for them to not be included in the release. To me, these songs round out the world this album established, with my original intention being to make a more uplifting, energetic record than my first.’
The deluxe edition on Hatchie’s Giving the World Away, is out April 7 via Secretly Canadian. Read the review for her 2018 EP, Sugar and Spice, here.
