Reposted @pentagramdesign From the cosmologies of ancient Black civilizations to the era of slavery and the present day, African Americans have reimagined the futures and possibilities across the globe through Afrofuturism. This ever-evolving concept is explored in “Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures,” a major exhibition on view @nmaahc in Washington, DC. #EddieOpara and team have designed the companion volume from @smithsonian_books, complete with custom typography inspired by iconic objects in the exhibition.

Three custom display typefaces reference artifacts in the show. These include Parliament Medium and Luke Cage Comic, adapted by the Pentagram designers from the logos on Parliament’s “Mothership Connection” album cover and Marvel’s Luke Cage comic book, respectively. The third typeface is VTC Du Bois, designed by Tré Seals of @vocaltype.co and based on W.E.B. Du Bois’ hand-drawn lettering. (The Pentagram team also developed a typeface inspired by zigzag lettering on the Betty Davis album “They Say I’m Different,” but it was ultimately not used.) Supporting type is set in Halyard by Joshua Darden.

The front cover features a detail of “Android/Negroid #14” by @wayne.hodge.165. The back cover recreates a work by @alishabwormsley from her series, “There Are Black People in the Future.”

week 7 update: progess towards final 2D prototype (february 16, 2024)

[was not able to attend this class as I was feeling unwell this morning, I would've been in group 1 - 12:00pm-1:00pm]

at this point, I was contemplating whether just illustrations would be enough for this pamphlet... so I thought about shadow boxes as my inspiration and maybe adding that raised look to give the "rooms" a more "lively" sense. these scenarios are very much real and thought portraying it that way could make it feel more realistic and not so flat but more dimensional.

I will try and attempt this with:

for ideas of darker scenes I could try and portray for the rooms.

trying to get down measurements for print, expected assembly, and room scenarios.

was thinking of utilizing a muted dark yellow colour palette because I researched that in France, yellow is the colour there that signifies betrayal and jealousy.

design elements:

I really liked FreightMicro Pro Light Italic as a body text to accompany the header text of Mudstone Sans. taking into consideration the meaning "writing on the wall" which insinuates something unpleasant or unwelcome is going to happen which I thought was so fitting for this project. to have the meanings of each jealous type scenario literally written on the walls.

I thought about either staying true to the prototype dimensions I had as I thought it was just right for legibility (12.5cmx11cmx8.8cm), for connecting multiple rooms it wouldn't be too long and overwhelming. otherwise I could try and slim it down to an A2 card format but feel like it could end up smaller than I wanted.

WEEK 2/3 CHOSEN TYPEFACE - Jubilat:

It was created in 2008 by the Joshua Darden and released through Darden Studios. Jubilat is a variable slab serif typeface with 2 differnts font in the family; Jubilat and Jubilat Thin. Both typefaces offer a various choices from the weights of the fonts to italics. Jubilat explores the history of the slab serif in six weights, with generous curves and efficient spacing in both dimensions. Its large lowercase and high contrast make it suitable for headlines, decks, and sidebars. In total the family has 24 different styles.

I chose this font as it reminded of my home, Canada. the slab serif font has common characteristics that are present in Canada. The calm and relaxed feel of the font is the perfect font for me. Jubilat will make a good font in my specimen book.

■ HISTORY. ■

Jessica didn’t grow up in the city, she lived far from it actually. The brunette was born in New Hampshire and lived with her grandmother and her mother for as long as she could remember. Jessica didn’t grow up with a solid father figure. Her grandmother was fairly young widow and her mother didn’t have the time to date, nor did she want her daughter to be introduced to someone who wasn’t long term. From Jessica’s point of view, she had a great childhood, she played with kids in her neighborhood, with the help of her grandmother, her mother was able to provide a stable home for Jessica to grow up in. Being the result of teenage pregnancy had its perks though also its disadvantages. For example, she and her mother were close enough in age and size that sharing clothes was often an option. The disadvantage was the glances she and her mother would get when she was a kid, and of course the annoyance of teenage boys who labeled her mother as a ‘total milf’.

Jessica has always been incredibly curious and hard working. As a kid, Jessica loved reading instruction manuals since it provided her with information about how things worked, how things we’re put together. Finding pieces to a puzzle had always been a favorite of hers. In her senior year, she took a psychology course and fell in love with how the brain worked, although her primary interest was within criminals. It’s for that reason she chose to study criminology degree. After years of studying, she continued to enjoy her studies although she felt she really needed a break. It’s then she decided to move out and spend a few years living in Texas. During those few years, she’d been able to get a taste of the real world. She paid for rent, living, cell phone, and of course partied with friends, went out to clubs. She was living her best life and taking advantage of her mid-twenties. When she turned twenty-six, she desperately wanted to settle down with a job and a steady income.

It’s then she decided to take on the Police Training Academy and work her way into a job involving criminal activity. Three years ago, Jessica was proud to have been selected as one of the few police officers promoted to working on a drug-related task force. Their city had recently noticed a huge spike in drug sales and drug overdoses. It was favorably assumed it was related to the local gang, Quantum of Devils. It was their job, to keep track of all data and find ways to connect how they transporting drugs in and out of Texas. When she was given this new position, she didn’t realize this new line of work would take up three years of her life and a new destination. As she settles herself into the city, she’s introduced to a new city and a new group of players, not realize the chaos that would arise in her personal and professional life.

■ WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON? ■

Jessica hasn’t had much experience with New York City. She’d attended a few bachelorette parties here though she wasn’t even given the opportunity to really explore. Since landing in the big apple, she has spent most of her time in the station and her new apartment. Doing her best to prepare the station with all the necessary pieces in order to not only take down the initial gang she was hired for, though help the detectives working with the affiliated gang.

It isn’t a secret to her that she grew up without a father, as a kid she asked about a dad, though she and her mother came to an understanding that there doesn’t always need to be a dad to create a family. Her mother never told her who her father was. Jessica didn’t care much to find out, mainly because when she was a teenager, the scenarios her friends would present her with weren’t scenarios she’d ever wanted to live out. They either painted her mother in a bad light or painted her father in a bad light. Either way, she grew up feeling content with having her mother be her sole parent. What she isn’t aware of, is she’s moved into the city her father lives in. To most that wouldn’t cause a blink of an eye, though Jessica wasn’t only living in her father’s city, she was soon going to be investigating him and his gang.

■ Joshua Krongold: Joshua Krongold is Jessica’s father. Her mother has never uttered a word about him, nor has she voluntarily shown a photo of him. She has one that she used to look at when she was ten years old. Though the man who was her father looked to be eighteen in the photo.  

■ Crystal Reeves: Crystal was the only other female police officer to have been promoted to the drug task force in Texas. The two became very close friends in Texas and remain incredible colleagues and friends to this day.

Historical Inspiration

Saying “book type” is a bit imprecise. Merriweather’s sources of inspiration are more specific than that. To begin with Merriweather tries when possible to keep the feeling found in 16th century French types such as Garamonds and Jannons and Elzevir types as well as Aldine 15th century Italian type.

Mixed into this is the need the type work at small sizes on screen which required the adoption of some the structural features of more modern and specifically screen type. Merriweather is therefore inspired by the methods used by much more contemporary designer including the types of Gerrard Unger, Steve Matteson, Paul Barnes & Christian Schwartz, Joshua Darden and Christoph Noordzij. These designers’ work showcases the process of simplifing, regularizing, and essentializing letter shapes in order to better perform a specific task.

Research of Typeface

1.Ogg

Inspired by the hand lettering of 20th century book designer and calligrapher Oscar Ogg, Ogg captures the unique mix of calligraphic and typographic form he achieved through his use of hand carved pen nibs, brushes, and white-out. The foundational forms for the italic were a combination of invention and inspiration, mostly pulled from the deck sized script calligraphy found throughout this same volume. Although there is not a direct connection between these samples and the signature multi-kinked serif construction that forms the basis of the Ogg italic bouma, the design of Ogg amplifies many of the telltale moves found throughout Ogg's calligraphic works such as Ogg's signature italic ascenders. Although the foundational forms of the italic lowercase were more invention than direct inspiration, the uppercase forms found in the above sample were mined extensively for the italic majuscule.

2.Caslon

Caslon worked as an engraver of punches, the masters used to stamp the moulds or matrices used to cast metal type. He worked in the tradition of what is now called old-style serif letter design, that produced letters with a relatively organic structure resembling handwriting with a pen. Caslon established a tradition of engraving type in London, which previously had not been common, and was influenced by the imported Dutch Baroque typefaces that were popular in England at the time. His typefaces established a strong reputation for their quality and their attractive appearance, suitable for extended passages of text.

3.Coco

COCO designed by French designer Hendrick Rolandez is sans-serif font family designed for all type lovers who would like to emphasize a fashion project. The fashion typeface is available in 8 fonts with regular, italic, bold, bold-italic, condensed, condensed-italic, condensed bold & condensed bold-italic which can be used for several type of projects from digital to print. Each font has more than 209 glyphs including small letters, capitals, numbers & special glyphs and punctuation. You can use this font family for both personal and commercial projects.

4.Garamond

Garamond is a group of many serif typefaces, named for sixteenth-century Parisian engraver Claude Garamond, generally spelled as Garamont in his lifetime. Garamond-style typefaces are popular and particularly often used for book printing and body text.

5. Freight Text

Freight Text is a serif typeface designed by Joshua Darden in 2005. Freight is an extremely versatile superfamily with many different versions available, making it suitable for a wide range of typographic challenges. Other members of the superfamily include Freight Sans, Freight Neo, Freight Display and Freight Big. 2. Pacioli

Luca Pacioli (1445-1514 or 1517) was an Italian mathematician and Franciscan friar who lived during the Renaissance. While he was the chairman of mathematics in Milan, he collaborated with and taught mathematics to Leonardo da Vinci.

He published his second important book De divina proportione, in 1509. This book discussed topics including mathematical proportion, geometry, and architecture. Along with beautiful three-dimensional renderings by da Vinci, Pacioli included diagrams detailing the geometric construction of the Roman alphabet.

This font is based on an alphabet published by Luca Pacioli in his 1509 mathematical treatise De divina proportione. In this book, Pacioli describes how to build the Roman alphabet geometrically using lines, squares and circles.

Pacioli was not the first or the last man in his era to describe the building of letters mathematically. Felice Feliciano did this before Pacioli, and Albrecht Dürer further developed these forms years after. According to Pacioli, the thick strokes should be 1/9th of the height, and the thin strokes should have 1/2 the weight of the thick strokes.

3. Gentium

Gentium is a Unicode serif typeface designed by Victor Gaultney.

The original release of Gentium defined roughly 1,500 glyphs covering almost all of the range of Latin characters used worldwide, as well as monotonic and polytonic Greek , designed to flow in harmony with the Latin. In 2003, the Gentium font was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in Type Design from the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) as one of the best designs of the previous five years.

Opposites attract each other

   As part of a press exercise, we were asked to rethink the editorial and graphic charter of FishEye magazine. The aim was to think from A to Z the intern layout and the principle and construction of the cover. One of the main questions during this exercise was to clearly show our willingness to position ourselves while respecting the values of the magazine.

   FishEye is a magazine with a desire to decipher the world through photography. Its primary goal is to create a medium that speaks to the new generation with a broader vision of the world. But to and its new questions while succeeding in confronting new and seasoned eyes.

   How to show this formal confrontation? It was by composing my cover with the elements I had put in place internally that I confronted two totally different typographical characters within the same title. Let's start by analyzing the Platform typeface, released in 2012 and inspired by the typefaces of the 1920s redesigned for our contemporary era by Berton Hasebe. This linear typeface has not been designed with a strict width of lettering in mind: a significant difference between the width of an 'e' and that of an 'a' for example.

   The Freigh Text Book stands up to it. Indeed, this serif typeface designed by Joshua Darden and released in 2005. Its creator wanted to create a timeless serif typeface that could be used "where rigour and style are needed". Its particularity is that it strongly relies on the morphological difference between his Regular and Italic, making each fat unique and special.

  These two typographical characters each has unique particularities and it seemed challenging to me to make them cohabit within my editorial principle. Putting them in confrontation, I underline the two opposing photographic universes (the old and the new). However, how to succeed in this typographic mix without creating an illegibility and a visual surplus?

   To do this, I have to impose rules to compose if I want this cohabitation to work. One of the most important rules in order not to let the shock be too frontal: I must make sure that they never cohabit on the same line, each one must be able to express itself fully. The second rule is to reduce their tracking  to not accentuate their significantly different morphology. The third and last rule is to modify their leading as much as possible so that both can face each other simply, but not too harshly.

   Ever since I began my studies in graphic design, now more precisely in editorial design, I have always been sensitive to typography. My typographic desires are often in contradiction and thanks to FishEye, I have been able to experiment how to make cohabit two different typefaces while serving my layout concept.

The main font I’ve used for my the campaign is Omnes. Omnes is a rounded sans-serif typeface designed by Joshua Darden. It was originally published in 2006 and later expanded with additional weights added in 2018. The family is available in four widths (standard, semi-condensed, condensed and narrow), with each width available in nine weights with matching italics. The light weights are what I have used more as they provide a clean and soft look which I feel like effectively portrays the feel of my campaign as it discusses the sensitive topic of Mental Health. https://fonts.adobe.com/fonts/omnes

While looking for a secondary font I was looking through various different websites and decided on Proxima Nova as it didn’t look too different nor too similar and felt complementary to the Omnes font.
