How to Create and Maintain a Routine with ADHD & Bipolar Disorder
Keeping a routine is important for mood stabilization and a general sense of order and control, which can be extremely important for ADHD & Bipolar Disorder
1. MAKE LISTS
-lots and lots of lists
-write it out so explicitly that there is no question about your next steps
Having it written down provides structure and a checklist to follow which allows you to switch things up to keep your ADHD interested, but also makes it easier on your executive dysfunction to execute the tasks.
Also make sure the MOST important things are at the top of the list that way when you’re in a depressive episode and can’t get through the whole list, you still make it through the big things like brushing your teeth
2. KEEP THINGS WHERE YOU USE THEM (& MAKE SURE YOU PUT THEM BACK)
-keep everything in a place that makes sense for when you’re going to use it
-put things back where they go!! this is easier when you’re already in the place you’re using it. it’s harder for us ADHDers to remember to put our hairbrush back under our bathroom sink if we brush our hair in front of the mirror in our bedroom
You keep your toothbrush by your sink (or in the shower, no judgement here) because that’s where you brush your teeth, so why not do this with all of your items? Keeping a small stash of cleaning supplies in each room will make it easier to clean up as you notice messes because there is no long trip to another room for cleaning supplies where 30 other things could take your attention.
3. DON’T MAKE YOUR ROUTINE WHILE MANIC
-set realistic expectations of yourself
This is important because your manic self is invincible and your everyday self is not. It also sets yourself up to fail due to the impossible standard of high energy mania, and failing shuts down an ADHD brain.
4. CREATE A REWARD SYSTEM
-think fifth graders who get a pizza party for good attendance
-set realistic goals: don’t set out to get the whole month perfect on your first attempt, take it a day or a week at a time. this is especially important for ADHDers because we struggle with delayed gratification
Whatever reward system works for you is perfect for you, don’t worry about what someone else thinks, but pick a reward that is small enough you can treat yourself to it regularly
5. GAMIFICATION
-take your meds at the same time every day, but make them your secret power up to conquering this level (aka today)
-try and race yourself to finish the task before the timer goes off (but make sure the time is realistic)
-play music or a podcast to make it more fun
6. USE ALARMS/TIMERS
-break your day up into blocks of time
-only have one or two things to focus on in the time block
-have an alarm or timer go off at the end of the time
-once the time block has closed, drop whatever you are doing and move on to the next focus
7. ASK FOR HELP
-if you’re anything like me, you hate this idea, but trust me it helps
-ask someone to hold you accountable, ask someone for reminders, ask for whatever you need, but make sure it’s someone you can count on and that you trust
Stay tuned for more posts about how I maintain a daily routine or feel free to message me with any questions! It takes 21 days to make or break a habit, so the first month is always the hardest. Stay strong, challenge yourself, and go forth and conquer!

and countless of hundreds of others have lost their lives to systemic racism and police brutality in the united states. THIS MUST END. “normal” shouldn’t be citizens afraid of those charged to protect them. “normal” shouldn’t be weapons banned in wars used on peaceful civilians. “normal” shouldn’t include the continued abuse of those who are treated as less than by the system. WE HAVE THE POWER TO INACT CHANGE. MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD AGAINST RACISM AND POLICE BRUTALITY.

ADHD doesn’t feel like a superpower today..
..and that’s okay.
Not every day is going to feel like you can conquer your brain. Sometimes it’s overwhelming and you start to drown in it.
PLEASE know that this is a safe space for anyone. Feel free to message me if you have anything on your mind.
Also: I have more videos coming soon, please be patient with me. I’m just a stressed college kid with mental health issues, I can only take on so much at a time. In the meantime, let me know what kind of content you want to see most!

co-star call out: if you were your own therapist today, what would you say?
isolation is not the same as focusing on yourself. learn how to set boundaries with others and with yourself. taking a day off is okay as long as it doesn’t become a habit.

not your mother's covid-19 post
okay taking out the deadly pandemic part of it, can we talk about all the great things about quarantine?
1. no one will know that you haven’t showered or changed clothes in the last week because of a depressive episode that’s kicking your ass
2. you never have to leave your pet
3. manic energy have you up at 4 AM? no worries you have no where to be tomorrow!
4. no more jeans (or bras), if you want to wear pajamas 24/7 no one can tell you no
5. you have an automatic excuse if you don’t have the social battery to hang out with someone
on the other hand, quarantine is also causing more problems:
1. on top of everything else, you now also have to keep track of a mask
2. all that effort you put into training yourself to remember your reusable grocery bags? useless now
3. you are the sole person responsible for entertaining your brain for 24 hours a day
4. you are also the only person there to hold you accountable for anything
5. grocery shopping is no longer a relaxing errand, but a deadly mission out into the real world

So.. I’ve been absent
I’ve been feeling really low and anxious the last few weeks and haven’t been able to sitting down to write a piece. But I’m trying my hardest to pull myself out of it, so here I am.
I’m returning to the camp for kids with disabilities that I used to work at and I’m super thrilled. I feel like this is just the kick I need to finally get back to being myself. July is off to a good start..
July I welcome you. May you be filled with blessings, abundance, peace and prosperity. May this be a time of happiness and growth. July I welcome you.

co-star call out: there is nothing to be gained from engaging in emotional blackmail
stop giving in to people’s need to manipulate you. you do not have to make everyone like you. you only have to entertain people who are worth your time.

honesty hour:
sometimes writing is really hard. i just can’t always get my brain to form complete sentences let alone have them be connected to each other. sometimes my brain feels like a million open tabs or like letting a bunch of dogs loose in different directions and sometimes it feels like it’s full of cotton or water or foam or something that just drowns out everything else.
but sometimes it’s the easiest thing in the world and the words come spilling out of me and it’s all i can do to keep up with them as they fill page after page with an internal monologue i didn’t realize i'd been holding back.

hey, it’s me. live and in stereo brought to you by the power of ANXIETY.
tonight’s easy listening: That 70s Show
location: crossing building two
anxiety: 6.4 the weed is helping, but the hockey instagram page and my two hour night shift are packing a one-two punch
five hours and one minute. that’s how long it took for me to go from confident on my next steps to square one all over again. it doesn’t help that in those five hours i completely forgot what that breakthrough was. the first rule of adhd, write down EVERYTHING. it’s never enough to “just remember” it.
Angel Number Alert: 888
your life purpose is supported by the universe
which is all kinds of cool, but what is my life purpose? what am i even doing with my life? other than writing this blog post and trying to keep my dog happy..
until next time my fellow shipwrecks

my thoughts are burning a hole in my mind but words would never be enough for them.
they twist and turn and come to a dead stop in the blink of an eye, threatening to send me over the edge of the cliff into the unknown. somersaulting through nothingness until they smash into me again like a tsunami. unrelenting and more powerful than i could hope to be. they threaten to drown me out in their noise unless i can swim to shore. even when i wash up on the rocks, gasping for air, the waves will not cease. i will fight this battle every single day and it is all i can do to pray i find my way back to shore each time the tsunami carries me out to sea.
welcome to the shipwreck.

welcome to the shipwreck; a combination of the journal and constant internal monologue of a college student as she navigates life with her dog. join me on a journey of self-discovery featuring the perfect soundtrack, learning how to build a better life and the general fuckery of having ADHD. we’ll get real about what goes down in the bedroom, how many classes were skipped this week, and the struggles of balancing mental health in today’s world.
