Cheritz's changes in staff over the lifetime of The Ssum
I wanted to write a post about this because it was the nail in the coffin convincing me that The Ssum won't get better. I really want to be optimistic, I was for the first year of the game's release. But with how hard they're fumbling June's route, and having some context by seeing the dramatic changes that happen behind the scenes, I don't have any hope for the game's future in its original concept.
So here's a big fat list of credits, comparison of them, and my own stupid commentary.

Credits from 2019
These are in the lyric booklet included in the Teo Love Bundle. Strangely enough, I'm already seeing differences between the 2018 credits and 2019. Uh oh?
As of release + a few months
These screenshots don't feature all the credits, unfortunately. I'm relying on screenshots someone else took because I'm not proactive but hindsight is 20/20.
Changes: Project is no longer managed by Heinrich Dortmann, instead by Juho Woo. Scenario team cut down to 2 people, one of which is a new name (Jooyoung Lim). Art team also cut down to 2 people. Sound is no longer resourced by Songhee Kim, but Jaeryeon Park and ROGIA. All new team of directing assistants as well, it expanded to 4 people but they're all new names. 2 fewer programmers, only one of the listed names was already working.
October 2023 (June's release)
Here's where it somehow gets worse lol.
Changes: A lot. Directing assisted by 1 person. They were not a part of the team credited in the OP. Down to 3 programmers, only 1 being in the OP. Entirely new art team! It's up to 4 people, but all of them are new, even compared to only a few months prior. Down to 1 scenario writer pobrecita (but we're coming back to that). Since I don't have screenshots of the project assistant credits from launch, can't say anything for that, except that Gui Zhenghao is new compared to the OP but the number of staff there remained the same. Flaming Heart is gone for the BGM! He's been working with Cheritz for forever but is gone now. One person from the communication team left, so they're down to 2. That would explain why emails have been slower since October. Only 1 translator, though Cheritz is now looking to recruit new ones.
Important note:
According to Cheritz's post acknowledging their use of gAI, Sujin Ri was not involved in writing season 1 of the game, but IS the main writer for season 2. I won't make a rant about how much I hate what she's writing cuz this isn't the post for that, but it explains why season 2 is so vastly different.
The fact that only a few people (like, in the lower single digits) remain even from 2019/early 2022, let alone who's still around from 2018, is really frustrating for the game. The game started with one vision, but now it's being turned into something completely different. Even the app's functions are inconsistant between season 1 and 2 (and a little so between Harry and Teo). According to an email I got from Cheritz, season 2 takes place a few years before season 1. Just sit with that knowledge for a bit :P. It's like the current people in charge of The Ssum (*cough Sujiin Ri*) couldn't be bothered to keep the original concept in mind, let alone how the timeline would work.
This post was a long time coming, I was caught up in just how bizarre this all is and finding tons of stuff that I haven't even included in the post. Writing this has taken about 3 hours (including the time I spent on a post ONLY FOR TUMBLR TO NOT WANNA WORK PROPERLY WHEN I TRIED TO POST IT SO IT GOT DELETED) and uhhh yeah. Now I gotta wait a few years to ask former staff if their NDAs are expired yet LOL
ty for the tag @adangersandwich! doing this now that i have my new laptop ahlkdsfjklsd
1. three ships: me realizing that i prefer platonic/It's Complicated duos WAY more than romantic ships... lol. i don't really write fic for these three but i do adore them romantically
I know the Author's already said something to the effect of Surviving Romance not really having a strong focus on romance plots, but consider this.
I see comments both for and against Chaerin/Kim falling in love and I can understand why people wouldn't want her to be in a relationship. With all the focus upon how empty Kim's attempts to force love with someone who's ONLY trait as a person is to love her really is, it would be a good message if at the end of it all, she doesn't find someone and is satisfied with having bonded with her classmates.
BUT WHAT IF, Kim DOES end up falling for another person, and this time around, it's a true, healthy romance with mutual understanding from both parties instead of mindless romanticism?
I don't think Mihui should be a romance option since I personally feel that the importance she has in restoring Kim's will to live shouldn't be tied to romantic attraction. I absolutely love her character, but I feel what she does is more meaningful in a platonic light.
Jihyeon however, is somebody Kim's come to know from the ground up. Jihyeon barely gets mentioned in the original novel, so how do they even get close?
They just interact with each other.
Kim gets to have these small moments with Jihyeon like with how she learns of Jihyeon’s music hobby and Jihyeon confidently stating they’ll recover from their injury and become a volleyball player after laughing off Kim’s admission of lying to her. Hell, half of chapters 23 and 80 is just the two of them, talking and enjoying the others company.
They work rather beautifully as an emotionally isolated girl getting along with someone with their own life and identity, but still maintaining that gentleness Kim Huisu so desperately wished for at the start of the story.
Who knows, maybe from that something special could blossom….
(I swear if they become endgame I could just die happy)
I'll admit I just went with Chaeram because I needed a fifth. She's likeable but I don't feel as strongly about her as the first four so she might be replaced the more I read into season 2.
A yelp is ripped from your throat as you stumble down the stairs, your ankle jerking unnaturally as you try to stop your fall. There’s a loud bang that echoes through the stairwell as your knees hit the floor, and you wince as you cradle your twisted ankle. If it’s any consultation, at least there wasn’t anyone else around—
The door to the stairwell opens, and you almost hurt your neck with how hard you jolt upwards. Jihyeon stares blankly at you, before spotting your injured knees and furrowing her brow in concern. She opens the door completely, enters the stairwell, and shuts it behind her before you can say much of anything.
“Hey.” she greets, reaching out to you, “You alright?”
You let her press a hand to your shoulder as she looks from you to your knees.
“Think I sprained my ankle.” you whisper, turning away from her.
Of course, out of everyone you could have gotten caught by, it had to be her.
“Mm. We should get that fixed up.” she says, turning away from you to collect your scattered books and papers, “Do you think you can stand?”
“Yeah. Probably.” you huff quietly, curling in on yourself.
Jihyeon sets your stuff next to you and begins packing it neatly into your bag again, humming a soft tune. The music feels like a chilly winter's night where there isn’t a cloud in the sky and all the stars are out and—
And it’s just gorgeous.
You look at Jihyeon.
She’s looking at you.
You whip your head away again, and she laughs. It isn’t a loud or booming noise, but with the way it makes your heart thunder, it may as well have been.
“I’ll take you to the infirmary.” Jihyeon smiles, hoisting your bag over her shoulder.
You smile back, hoping you don’t look too awkward, before pulling yourself up off the ground and biting back a yelp when you accidentally step on your injured ankle. Jihyeon’s arm shoots out in front of you as if to stop you from falling again.
“Sorry.” you apologize, “I don’t want to hold you—”
“Here.” Jihyeon holds her arms out, as if asking for your permission to touch you again, “I’ll carry you.”
“What?!” you yelp, cheeks warming at the idea.
“Well...I want to do what I can to help.” she flushes, eyes darting away from you, “If you aren’t comfortable that’s fine—”
“No! No, it’s okay. I don’t mind.” you blurt, waving your hands around frantically.
“Okay.” she nods, a gentle smile blooming on her face again as she wraps one arm around your back and the other around your knees.
You yelp as your axis shifts and Jihyeon lifts you, holding you like you’re nothing but a bundled blanket in her arms. You hide your face in your hands, embarrassed at the fact that you’re practically cradled against her.
“Make sure you’re more careful going down the stairs next time.” she murmurs, making her way down the stairs.
You think that maybe, if it ends like this, not being careful wouldn’t be so bad.
