Thanks to a generous gift card I received as, well, a gift, I was finally able to add several Junji Ito books to my ever growing collection.
I do have a few more books coming though, including Cat Diary and his art book Twisted Visions coming in the next few days.
I’ve also preordered The Liminal Zone, Black Paradox and the collector’s edition of Dissolving Classroom.
Still, I’m very exited and happy to add his legendary work to my shelves 🖤

in my heart, i want the Witch-Kids, (Klarion, Uriah, and Salem), to get along like houses on fire. maybe even have that weirdo family dynamic of "I'll kill you for junk food, but also I'm the only one who can mess with you"
but at the same time, i know they'd be very hostile toward each other. purely because I can't imagine these kids willingly wanting to let another Witch roam around stealing their thunder
basically, I'd see them as this

"Hikari, why are you so frightened?"
"..... and why do you always smell like garlic??"
After receiving some excellent fan art from @adamofingolstadt that absolutely made my week, I decided to provide a full face and body reveal for Hikari, since they are only partly visible on the cover art!
They wear the school uniform but not the school uniform shoes, since running shoes are best for running away, and they are all about being prepared! (Although all that the garlic actually does is make them smell like garlic. Silly Hikari! Vampires aren't real! And whatever Samo is, there is no knowing what they are or what their weakness is, if they even have any.)
Stay tuned for another suitor reveal, as well as a lovely little proof-of-concept comic about Samo the protagonist and Alfonse the sporty pastry chef!

My Favorite Junji Ito stories
Hello! I haven’t written a manga post in a while, so I figured it was finally time to talk about the manga king of horror himself Junji Ito (although it is embarrassingly far from spooky month right now)
I would say I’m a casual fan of Ito’s work; I haven’t read any of his longer form stories like Uzumaki or the full Tomie book but I have read a decent amount of his short stories, so I wanted to highlight some of those with as few spoilers as possible. Let’s go!
Earthbound
Hundreds of ordinary people are found stuck standing upright in random locations throughout Japan. These individuals all turn out to have been experiencing severe psychological distress, and they are unable to move from their spot no matter how hard they try. This story’s ending is one of my favorites of all of Junji Ito’s stories.
Death Row Doorbell
A grieving family is repeatedly haunted by the apparition of the man who killed their father and brother, ringing the doorbell and begging for forgiveness each night. Yet according to the prison guards, he has never left his cell. Out of my favorites I would say this one disturbed me the most; I don’t know if other readers would agree with me but I definitely was sufficiently spooked.
Roar (of Ages)
Two boys hiking in the woods suddenly spot a flash flood carrying dozens of screaming victims down the mountain. When they try to reach out and help, the flood vanishes as if it were never even there. This particular story reminded me a lot of the Mushishi series; it’s a lot more supernatural/mysterious than horror, in my opinion.
Anyway those are my main recommendations; I read all of these in the Smashed short story compilation. I’ve also read the Shiver collection but I think I liked Smashed better overall. Please let me know if you have any Junji Ito recs!
Thanks for reading,

Been on a Junji Ito binge lately and this guy takes the most ordinary things in modern society and goes “ok but what if it’s weird”, but also can go “what if putting physical beauty above everything and trying to impose that on others leads to bad stuff” and it does
