Thanks to a generous gift card I received as, well, a gift, I was finally able to add several Junji Ito books to my ever growing collection.

I do have a few more books coming though, including Cat Diary and his art book Twisted Visions coming in the next few days.

I’ve also preordered The Liminal Zone, Black Paradox and the collector’s edition of Dissolving Classroom.

inconsistent twst en incantions

I’ve noticed a few variations of UM chants in TWST EN?? This occurs with both Cater, Trey, and Deuce’s signature spells.

In the manga, Cater’s UM chant is “I am he and we are they.” However, when Cater uses his UM on his P.E. vignette, his chant is "I’m him and he’s them!“ The Episode of Heartslabyul manga also uses “Doodle Suit” instead of “Paint the Roses” (used in the TWST EN game) as the name for Trey’s UM.

The more obvious case of this is Deuce’s UM, which prominently features in the main story as well as in a recent event, Glorious Masquerade. When Deuce initially uses his UM in book 5, the chat is “It's payback time! Get a load of this! Double Down!” But then when Azul uses Deuce’s UM in GloMasq, the chant Azul utters is “It's time to pay up! You're in for a world of hurt! Double Down!" It’s not the case that a different person using a UM results in a different incantation; this chant is written the same in JP whether Azul or Deuce says it. (Plus, I don’t think Azul would say anything that… crass?? If he really could just change up the chant however he likes before using Double Down/Bet the Limit.)

Note that UM chants are not written different in JP; they are the exact same each time they are used in the original. This leads me to believe maybe EN had multiple groups of translators that do their own thing when localizing rather than standardizing reused phrases and terms (such as the UM names and chants)?? In the case of the manga, maybe Viz did its own translation? UMs aren't the only inconsistency either; there are also instances of magical wheel/blastcycle being mixed up and used interchangeably in EN as well as the names for various subjects (magical analysis/enigmatics), etc. The UM thing is just something I noticed from the second volume of the manga. 🤔 Just something interesting to think about!

So, this was the only version of this art I found that kept the signature and the stamp. It was the cover of chapter 80 of Maison Ikkoku, but color versions are hard to find since most volumes just have it in greyscale. This one (with the odd logo and watermark) is technically a poster, but it'll do. Anyway, the reason I bring this up is because VIZ actually mentioned something that I found pretty interesting in a translation note.

"A Good Friend: This title page is a parody of similar pictures and calligraphy by writer Saneatsu Mushanokoji. The original Japanese phrase is Naka yoki koto wa utsukushiki ka na—"To be on friendly terms is beautiful."

If you're like me, you don't tend to look stuff up that you see mentioned in translation notes, but this proved to be pretty interesting so I wanted to share. Saneatsu Mushanokoji was a novelist, poet, artist, etc. He painted some still lifes depicting vegetables in the 1920s. He obviously has done a great deal other than that, but here's one of his paintings for reference.

This piece called "GOOD FRIENDS" and I got the image from a website called mutualart.com. As you can tell, Rumiko not only parodied his still life but also referenced his work by including poetry, calligraphy, a signature and a stamp (none of which she normally included on cover pages). A personalized stamp in Japan is often used instead of or in tandem with a signature as an identification method. Anyway, I found this neat and wanted to share.

  Articles of a Convention concluded at the City of

Washington this Sixth day of May in the year of our Lord one

thousand eight hundred and twenty eight, between James Barbour

Secretary of War, being specially authorized therefor by the

President of the United States, and the undersigned Chiefs

and head men of the Cherokee nation of Indians, west of

the Mississippi, they being duly authorized and empowered

by their Nation.

   Whereas it being the anxious desire of the Government

of the United States to secure to the Cherokee Nation of Indians,

as well  those now living within the limits of the Territory of

Arkansas, as those of their friends and Brothers who reside

in States east of the Mississippi, and who may wish to join

Oh, My Love - A SWTOR Story

In which the Commander gets stabbed on Nathema instead of Theron Shan.

Its me back on my bullshit instead of sleeping (help) and I've been in SWTOR brainrot for a long while now and I keep thinking and creating stories based off my silly little swtor characters.

This isn't edited by the way

"I love you Theron, please, come home." Lana shuts off the holo and Sylvi begins to leave the room. Not saying a word as Lana watches sadly, knowing it was better not to say anything.

"I'm going for a walk in the woods, clear my mind." Was all she said before leaving, and not even going towards the woods. Sylvi heads for a secret shared apartment that no one knew off except her, Theron, and C2-N2.

It was for her to stop Theron being a workaholic and sleep and for her to get away from the alliance and being its commander. She lazily opens the door, before walking towards the lounge and slumping onto it. Too lost in her mind, the only thing keeping her going had ceased to exist and she finally tumbled down into a dark abyss of depression, shame, and self-loathing.

"I swear when I get my hands on him-" Trygve starts while Ingrid and Víðarr stand with him in the field where the former Cipher Nines ship resides.

"Trygve..." Víðarr starts but Trygve swirls to face him with a firm finger pointed at him.

"HE WILL FEEL EVERY AGONY, EVERY FORM OF TORTURE POSSIBLE FOR WHAT HE DID. I WILL SEE HIM BREAK FOR WHAT HE DID TO HER!" Trygve yells, making Ingrid flinch to hide behind Víðarr making the male twin sigh and calm himself slightly at her behavior.

"Brother, we will find him. I promise you, and we will make him pay," Víðarr assures, "But, you cannot deny something about this is off."

Ingrid moves from her position slightly behind the Sith, opening her mouth to say something before her comlink goes off.

"Ingrid here," She says while answering it.

"Its Hylo, we've found the pirate that keeps raiding the transports." Hylo Viz explains before disconnecting, making Ingrid close her eyes.

"I'll go, I sense something about this that's... familiar." Ingrid says to the brothers.

"Sense what?" Trygve quizzes, making Ingrid smile slightly.

"I sense someone that I'll love until the stars go cold." The Zabrak then turns on her heel and walks away with haste.

"Andronikos revel." Víðarr whispers with a small smirk.

"That pirate that helped her recover Tulak Hord's artifact on Tatooine?" Trygve asks.

"How do you-- another time. Lets go find Lana and figure our next move to find Theron."

"Vaylin! You have too stop her!"

"It is a tainted world."

"The Force is... wrong here."

"There are things in there even I cannot protect you from."

Sylvi shoots up in a sweat, another nightmare plaguing her sleep, however, this time it felt like a warning from the Force.

"Nathema..." She whispers before springing to her feet, half consciously, half on auto-pilot.

She needed to leave Odessen, without anyone knowing, following or finding her. Suddenly feeling like she was in a jail, she checked her armor before clipping her dualsaber to her belt. She walks to her wardrobe and finds a black cloak, heaving it over herself she pulls her hood up and leaves the apartment.

She blocks off all her bonds and shrouds her force signature, suppressing it from the force users all over the planet. She knew she had to take a ship without a tracker on it, or land then use the auto-pilot to send it adrift in the galaxy.

'That would throw them off my scent.' Sylvi realizes before maneuvering to the hanger. It was midnight and no sane person would be up unless they were on patrol.

The raven haired Jedi peeks around the corner, seeing an officer on patrol. Though she hated it, Sylvi forces them into a sleep before gently having them fall to the ground and running across to the fighters. She looks around before force leaping onto a fighter, once she does she hears voices coming towards the hanger before they notice her sleeping soldier.

"Over there!" Admiral Aygo calls out before getting onto the comms and shouting orders for flight control. Because the group couldn't identify Sylvi, they figured her to be a spy, saboteur, or assassin and that was a means for capture at any cost.

"Sithspit." Sylvi curses under her breathe before getting the ship fired up and getting ready to fly out.

In her quarters, Ingrid stirs feeling a heavy and firm arm around her waist. The Zabrak hears her comm beeping and uses the force to bring it to her.

"This better be important." Ingrid hisses.

"Ingrid! We have a situation in the hanger with an unknown assailant attempting to flee in a fighter. Their intent is unknown and they appear to be a force user!" Aygo explains making her groan, feeling the person behind her start to wake.

"I might not be able to get there in time." Ingrid replies, while attempting to move but the arm around her waist keep her flush to the persons chest.

"Understood, we will attempt to detain them." Aygo tells her before she turns off her commlink.

"Andronikos..." Ingrid starts but the pirate wasn't letting her go.

"Forget them, they've got it handled." He tells her lazily, planting kisses on her shoulders and gently taking the commlink and throwing it somewhere.

"This is important."

"So? You've skipped out on dark council meeting for less." Andronikos argues, not letting her go after getting her back. The pirate moves towards the Zabraks neck slowly, knowing it would help his argument for her to stay.

"Yes... I... I know this, but..." She keeps trailing off, finding it difficult to speak, and Andronikos smirks knowingly.

"But, Sith?"

Sylvi gets the fighter moving and knows Aygo and attempting to comm her, but she left it in the staging area so he wasn't getting an answer. She watches as he sends men to go find her in what most assumed were her private quarters.

Once she finds the opportunity she flies out of the hanger and into the atmosphere while getting the hyperdrive ready and finding the tracker at the same time.

Eventually, finds two wires she remembers her brothers telling her were for the tracker and weapons.

"Blast, which one was it." Sylvi asks herself before deciding to pull them both out.

What could go wrong?

As she pulls the wires an alarm start blaring to tell her weapons were disabled. She groans before glancing to see if she was clear to jump.

"Flying is for droids." She grumbles before entering hyperspace.

Leaving her with only her thoughts and the stars.

ANOTHER JUNJI ITO BOOK 🫣

I had totally forgotten about ordering this one months ago .. what a great surprise!

I couldn't help myself and immediately read the title story. It's a cracker!

This story collection is ©️Junji Ito 2013 - but the Viz Signature edition is dated March 2023 (first printing). So it's still very new in English. 😀 Ito continues in top form. 👍

Somewhere, in The Brightest Timeline in DBZ, some of the Biggest Bois in the series are in theeeee hardest-going viz rock band in this or any other galaxy.

Raditz plays guitar, obviously, and the things he does with that glorious mane defy belief. New branches of mathematics get invented to describe the majesty of its motion.

Nappa is on drums, and "with gusto" does not even begin to cover it. The man has ZEST. He has GLEE. He will beat the shit out of any time signature you give him, and he can kick a hundred pedals at speeds that make people go insane, for HOURS.

Android 16 is the Geddy Lee of the bunch. But quieter. He supplies keyboard and bass, both with a really amazing synth array that's got some sweet looping capabilities. He adds some Baroque sensibilities to the mayhem, kinda weaves it all together in a way that both elevates it and makes it weird.

Recoome is their front man. BECAUSE OF COURSE HE IS. Recoome puts the "Recoome" in "razzle dazzle." He puts his whole entire pussy AND everyone else's into SHOWMANSHIP. He came here to have a good time at your expense, and brother (gender inclusive), you are about to get taken for the ride of your life.

It is ill-advised to be in any kind of altered/intoxicated state at their performances, your mind is gonna get blown on such a grandiose level just by what's happening onstage that your brain might literally melt. 😂😂😂

They're called something incredibly silly, like BLAMMO! or The Twinks (because they can all do twinkly winks, they learned it from Recoome). And their albums are all named things that sound like they were written by an AI trying to name albums with input from Nappa and Recoome arguing. "Watermelon Thigh Crush Fresh, Delight," or like... "Bicepshual 2: II Strong Come On."

(Goten and Trunks get caught listening to some tracks from "Glutes Free Ranger; Caked, Beef." Chi-Chi and Vegeta lose their GODDAMN MINDS, so much yelling, and then they develop a new respect for each other over their disrespect for Raditz's and Nappa's life choices.)
