After an unsuccessful presidential bid, European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen will not run in the European Parliamentary elections in June. According to Helsingin Sanomat, she made the decision to stay out of that race before Finland's presidential campaign even started.
"I have been asked to run for office, but this time I will skip the elections," Urpilainen told the newspaper.
The mother of primary school-aged children told the paper that she wants to live daily life in the same country as her children. The family plans to move back to Finland after her term on the European Commission concludes at the end of this year.
She reflected on the recent campaign positively, saying that it was "a great experience in every way". However, she admits that trumping even second-place winner Pekka Haavisto would have meant achieving the near-impossible.
"Haavisto has practically been the number one candidate for centre-left or non-bourgeois Finland for 12 years," she said, adding that he has long been popular amongst SDP voters.
The 48-year-old says she hasn't ruled out a return to domestic politics, but that "right now it doesn't seem likely".
Sex education should start early
Meanwhile, in tabloid Iltalehti's domestic news, sex education is in the spotlight – in particular, the need to teach children about sexual diversity.
In the southern Finnish city of Hyvinkää, Grade 5 teacher Laura Lindholm points out that the 5th year textbooks educate children primarily on human reproduction and heterosexual sex.
She says it's a good introduction, but that children of that age need to learn that sexuality doesn't just exist between men and women. She says she goes to other sources, such as Yle Areena and materials from the NGO Väestöliitto (the Family Federation of Finland) to supplement the textbook.
According to Lindholm, children learn more through social media than their parents or teachers realise. Therefore, it is the teachers' job to correct misinformation. They have discretion to use outside sources, as long as they follow the curriculum.
However, sexual therapist Marja Kihlström says it's a problem when children's sex education is left up to the teacher's discretion, as there is no obligation to teach gender- or sexual diversity.
In Kihlström's view, it's good to develop a child's self-confidence and understanding by talking to them about how families and relationships are different, and how there are more than two genders. She points to recent homophobic discussions about presidential candidate Haavisto as being particularly hurtful to minorities.
"The realisation of sexual rights is linked to political will. It should be protected so that all children get the same information," Kihlström told the paper.
Bring on the (weather) chaos
Thursday will be relatively calm but Friday will bring meteorological chaos, just in time for the start of the ski holiday in southern Finland, according to rural newspaper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus.
A strong weather front will come in from the west, bringing up to 25 cm of snow to parts of the country and sleet and rain to other regions.
This is preceded by a cloudy Thursday for most of Finland, with Lapland getting some glimpses of sun. The forecast is for 1-10 degrees below zero Celsius in the west and 10-15 degrees below zero in eastern and northern Lapland.
The paper warns its readers to be particularly careful if travelling for the ski holiday. The weather is set to settle into rain and drizzle between Friday and Saturday, creating difficult conditions for those on the roads.

He put his glasses back on and turned a sad smile on Jutta. "Mourners don't care what the gods' reasons are. Their loved ones are gone. Forever. And nothing can be said or done to bring them back."
Jutta turns away from the ceiling to fix Reynin with a wide-eyed look, seeming shocked by his words. For a moment, they just stare; then the dam breaks. Their face crumples - slowly at first, then all at once - and they bury their head in their hands as the first of many agonized wails tears out of them.
Scene from my dnd campaign. Sometimes the grief hits you years later.

Review: All the Lights We Cannot See
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
Marie-Laure lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.
In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the stunningly beautiful instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.
Plot:
Everyone called Marie-Laure brave, but she was not brave, she was just doing what it took to survive. Becoming blind at a young age, Marie-Laure's father taught her how to be independent, by forcing her to lead them home from different places across Paris, but always reminded her that he would be with her to help them navigate life. Working at the Museum of Natural History, Marie-Laure was fascinated by the Sea of Flames, a stone that brought immortality to the person holding it, but death to all those surrounding it. Locked behind thirteen doors within the museum, Marie-Laure suspected it was what the Nazis were after when they invaded her city. Forced to leave, her father brought her to Saint-Malo to live with his reclusive great-uncle, and his housekeeper, in the small seaside town. There Marie-Laure learns more about the war, her family history, and what she is willing to do for her people to stop the Nazis.
Werner Pfennig lived at a children’s home with his younger sister, Jutta, and their french caretaker. The children’s home was always loud and busy, but Werner did not mind as he got to spend time with Jutta and read books on engineering, with the hopes of being one someday. When finding a radio that reached a french station, Jutta and Werner would stay up for hours listening to it, not realizing the danger they put themselves in. When accepted into the pretentious school, Werner had no choice but to leave Jutta and travel to the school where he learned how to assemble a gun, military history, and spend nights in a lab cracking radio code. Realizing his talents, the army set him up with a team to wander around France in search of radio signals. Throughout the search, Werner finds himself in Saint-Malo just as his people start to attack, and a blind girl helps Warner find his way back to himself.
Thoughts:
Anthony Doerr won the Pulitzer Prize with this stunning World War Two novel. Taken from a past-tense third-person perspective of Marie-Laure and Werner, switch between the years of their growing up to the year 1944 when the Nazis invaded Saint-Malo. With small mini-chapters, the novel is divided into 11 chapters, with the final being the epilogue based on the year 2014. The writing is stunning, filled with detail, heart, and passion, it is a bit hard to get into the unusual past-tense writing, and the fact that we never get to hear Marie-Laure or Werner’s thoughts on what they are doing. Yet this novel is a history story, filled with detail about the period and what life was like for Marie-Laure and Werner, who were on both sides of the war. Marie-Laure was a great character, as the novel started when she was quite young, you get to see the brave women she grew up to be, her dedication to helping her uncle deal with his PTSD from World War One, and her determination to do good in Saint-Malo. Werner is equally a good character, despite being a Nazi. Although never calling himself that, Werner was a unique character in the sense that he was willing to do the Nazis’ missions, but did not see the horrific crimes his people were committing, especially to the Jewish population. He wanted to be an engineer so he went to the Nazis’ school to become one, and despite the horrible things he saw within the walls, especially to his friend, Frederick, he still felt important when he was recruited to the lab, and even more important when he was enlisted for the front lines. Not uncommon, but it makes this novel a bit uncomfy that Doerr never mentions the holocaust, despite this being a World War Two novel, nor does he make Werner feel guilty for what he is doing to the French people he finds sending the radio signal. As the writing is a bit pretentious, Doerr really tries to make you visualize this romanticized novel, rather than feel the raw pain Doerr could have focused on. Overall, it feels like a very upper-class novel, with large words, flowy language, and a lack of heartache that other World War two novels could easily write about.

🎥Junu Ko Jutta - The Shoes of a Little Girl is a short film directed by Kedar Shrestha. His debut film as a director has traveled to more than 50 International festivals with more than 20 wins, including one at the World’s Oldest and most prestigious Short Film Festival, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Germany in 2020.
Junu Ko Jutta is a sweet story that talks about the importance of letting kids find their own ways to solve problems. Children’s natural creativity and curiosity are sometimes frustrated by the elders who guide them to follow “the norm”. Even when children are expected to learn, parents and elder people want them to learn the way they learned. Therefore, children are not given the freedom to explore the world their way.
Children have their own world, their own reality, and they often deal with some of the issues to get ready to fit into our society, which we don’t realize from their side. We, Junu’s team, therefore had a long-run plan, bringing out a series of 5 short films of different ages of children with the different issues they face on their age, all represented by the same character JUNU. We already had our first, Junu Ko Jutta, and now we are ready with its second short ‘JUNU KO RIBBON (The Ribbon of Little Girls)'
We, therefore, invite you to be a part of this beautiful process to let the world understand the children from their perspective. We welcome you to our team for the help we are looking for, any type of support and mainly backing us with financial SUPPORT as your investment in this film.
If anyone is interested, please let us know. Contact us at 𝘫𝘶𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘮@𝘨𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮 Or message us here on this page.
Let the children learn themselves…

In a Series A funding round, led by Taavet+Sten and Atomico, a European venture capital (VC) firm with $4 billion in assets under management, NFT infrastructure company NFTPort raised $26 million. With the money, the core product, which helps developers make NFT apps quickly, will be able to grow. "We are one of the largest providers of NFT infrastructure. NFTPort CEO and co-founder Johannes Tammekand told CoinDesk in an interview that the company is like Stripe or Amazon Web Services for NFTs. "A lack of proper infrastructure is one of the biggest problems companies and developers face when making NFT products," said Tammekand, who has a background in cybersecurity and got interested in blockchain technology in 2014 while researching Tor and Bitcoin for NATO. "Our infrastructure saves them hundreds of thousands of dollars and cuts the time it takes to get their goods to market from months to days or even hours." Tammekand told CoinDesk in an interview that the funding will help NFTPort, which is based in Estonia, add new features, work with more blockchains, and grow its team. The new company also wants to bring to market a decentralized NFT infrastructure protocol. Taavet+Sten is an investment company started by Taavet Hinrikus, who helped start the digital payment company Wise, and Sten Tamkivi, who helped start the tool Teleport for comparing cities. Tamkivi will become a co-founder of the NFTPort team. Rain Johanson, who used to be the CTO of Bolt, will become a co-founder and CTO. Other investors in the round included Protocol Labs, which made Filecoin, Jaynti Kanani, who helped start Polygon, and Jutta Steiner, who helped start Polkadot. Infrastructure for NFTPort includes application programming interfaces (APIs) for data, minting, and detecting fakes. The Ethereum, Polygon, and Solana blockchains all have NFT data that can be accessed through Data APIs. Developers can use Minting APIs to deploy, manage, and modify NFT smart contracts without having to write any smart contract code. The interface for spotting fakes makes sure that an NFT hasn't been created before on any of the supported blockchains. Developers like Nifty Gateway, which is part of the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, and Protocol Labs are already using NFTPort. Irina Haivas, a partner at Atomico, said in the press release, "We are very confident that there will be a shift toward more digital ownership made possible by NFT technology, and that NFTs could become a new asset class." "However, much of the infrastructure that is needed for NFTs and other Web 3 technologies to be widely used still needs to be built. This is where NFTPort comes in." https://nftdawn.io/nftport-the-stripe-for-nfts-has-raised-26m/?feed_id=451&_unique_id=62aad4ce52504

There are times when Jutta feels terrible for Linus. He’s such a sweet, dear boy. Always wanting to please. He’s so much happier in his room reading about strange creatures and faraway places, but for their mother he tries to be the man of the house.
Sometimes she wants to just blurt out the truth, perhaps sneak an anatomy book onto his desk... but she can’t bring herself to do it. Linus would feel compelled to tell the truth, no matter how confused and betrayed he felt, and it would be a disaster for them all.

Hildegard of Bingen, also known as Saint Hildegard and the Sibyl of the Rhine, was a German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, and polymath of the High Middle Ages. She is one of the best-known composers of sacred monophony, as well as the most-recorded in modern history. She has been considered by many in Europe to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany.
Hildegard was born around the year 1098, although the exact date is uncertain. Her parents were Mechtild of Merxheim-Nahet and Hildebert of Bermersheim, a family of the free lower nobility in the service of the Count Meginhard of Sponheim. Sickly from birth, Hildegard is traditionally considered their youngest and tenth child, although there are records of only seven older siblings. In her Vita, Hildegard states that from a very young age she had experienced visions.
Hildegard's works include three great volumes of visionary theology; a variety of musical compositions for use in liturgy, as well as the musical morality play Ordo Virtutum; one of the largest bodies of letters (nearly 400) to survive from the Middle Ages, addressed to correspondents ranging from popes to emperors to abbots and abbesses, and including records of many of the sermons she preached in the 1160s and 1170s; two volumes of material on natural medicine and cures; an invented language called the Lingua ignota ("unknown language"); and various minor works, including a gospel commentary and two works of hagiography.
Several manuscripts of her works were produced during her lifetime, including the illustrated Rupertsberg manuscript of her first major work, Scivias (lost since 1945); the Dendermonde Codex, which contains one version of her musical works; and the Ghent manuscript, which was the first fair-copy made for editing of her final theological work, the Liber Divinorum Operum. At the end of her life, and probably under her initial guidance, all of her works were edited and gathered into the single Riesenkodex manuscript.
Attention in recent decades to women of the medieval Catholic Church has led to a great deal of popular interest in Hildegard's music. In addition to the Ordo Virtutum, sixty-nine musical compositions, each with its own original poetic text, survive, and at least four other texts are known, though their musical notation has been lost. This is one of the largest repertoires among medieval composers.
One of her better-known works, Ordo Virtutum (Play of the Virtues), is a morality play. It is uncertain when some of Hildegard's compositions were composed, though the Ordo Virtutum is thought to have been composed as early as 1151. It is an independent Latin morality play with music (82 songs); it does not supplement or pay homage to the Mass or the Office of a certain feast. It is, in fact, the earliest known surviving musical drama that is not attached to a liturgy.
The Ordo virtutum would have been performed within Hildegard's monastery by and for her select community of noblewomen and nuns. It was probably performed as a manifestation of the theology Hildegard delineated in the Scivias. The play serves as an allegory of the Christian story of sin, confession, repentance, and forgiveness. Notably, it is the female Virtues who restore the fallen to the community of the faithful, not the male Patriarchs or Prophets. This would have been a significant message to the nuns in Hildegard's convent. Scholars assert that the role of the Devil would have been played by Volmar, while Hildegard's nuns would have played the parts of Anima (the human souls) and the Virtues. The devil's part is entirely spoken or shouted, with no musical setting. All other characters sing in monophonic plainchant. This includes Patriarchs, Prophets, A Happy Soul, A Unhappy Soul and A Penitent Soul along with 16 female Virtues (including Mercy, Innocence, Chasity, Obedience, Hope, and Faith).
In addition to the Ordo Virtutum, Hildegard composed many liturgical songs that were collected into a cycle called the Symphonia armoniae celestium revelationum. The songs from the Symphonia are set to Hildegard's own text and range from antiphons, hymns, and sequences, to responsories. Her music is monophonic, that is, consisting of exactly one melodic line. Its style has been said to be characterized by soaring melodies that can push the boundaries of traditional Gregorian chant, and to stand outside the normal practices of monophonic monastic chant. Researchers are also exploring ways in which it may be viewed in comparison with her contemporaries, such as Hermannus Contractus. Another feature of Hildegard's music that both reflects twelfth-century evolution of chant, and pushes that evolution further, is that it is highly melismatic, often with recurrent melodic units. Scholars such as Margot Fassler, Marianne Richert Pfau, and Beverly Lomer also note the intimate relationship between music and text in Hildegard's compositions, whose rhetorical features are often more distinct than is common in twelfth-century chant. As with all medieval chant notation, Hildegard's music lacks any indication of tempo or rhythm; the surviving manuscripts employ late German style notation, which uses very ornamental neumes. The reverence for the Virgin Mary reflected in music shows how deeply influenced and inspired Hildegard of Bingen and her community were by the Virgin Mary and the saints.
In recent years, Hildegard has become of particular interest to feminist scholars. They note her reference to herself as a member of the weaker sex and her rather constant belittling of women. Hildegard frequently referred to herself as an unlearned woman, completely incapable of Biblical exegesis. Such a statement on her part, however, worked to her advantage because it made her statements that all of her writings and music came from visions of the Divine more believable, therefore giving Hildegard the authority to speak in a time and place where few women were permitted a voice. Hildegard used her voice to amplify the church's condemnation of institutional corruption, in particular simony.
Hildegard has also become a figure of reverence within the contemporary New Age movement, mostly because of her holistic and natural view of healing, as well as her status as a mystic. Though her medical writings were long neglected, and then studied without reference to their context, she was the inspiration for Dr. Gottfried Hertzka's "Hildegard-Medicine", and is the namesake for June Boyce-Tillman's Hildegard Network, a healing center that focuses on a holistic approach to wellness and brings together people interested in exploring the links between spirituality, the arts, and healing. Her reputation as a medicinal writer and healer was also used by early feminists to argue for women's rights to attend medical schools. Hildegard's reincarnation has been debated since 1924 when Austrian mystic Rudolf Steiner lectured that a nun of her description was the past life of Russian poet-philosopher Vladimir Soloviev, whose Sophianic visions are often compared to Hildegard's. Sophiologist Robert Powell writes that hermetic astrology proves the match, while mystical communities in Hildegard's lineage include that of artist Carl Schroeder as studied by Columbia sociologist Courtney Bender and supported by reincarnation researchers Walter Semkiw and Kevin Ryerson.
Recordings and performances of Hildegard's music have gained critical praise and popularity since 1979. See Discography listed below.
The following modern musical works are directly linked to Hildegard and her music or texts:

Can a relationship built on blackmail ever become something more?
Okay, let's get this out of the way right at the beginning. This is one of my favorite yaoi. There, I said it. Will my review be a little biased? Maybe? But, I think it's still a must read for any fan of yaoi.
Art: 10/10
Everything in this manga is good looking. The characters, their outfits, the scenes - *chef's kiss* You can tell the mangaka has put in a lot of care and thought into making the art hot, adorable and visually stunning. I'm telling you, the characters (well, Maya and Akira lol) have better style than me...
And *spoilers*
One of the characters goes through a visual glow-up around volume 4 and my god-

Story: 10/10
There is blackmail and dub-con elements in the beginning. Can it be tough to read through - yes. When I first read it, I was a little off-put. However, the story does actually address it later in the plot. Does that excuse it? Not really. Is it as bad as Caste Heaven? Definitely not.
Now the main flow of this series is really well paced. The plot is clear, thought out, interesting, and enjoyable. It does fall into the classic angst drives the plot though...
There's a disagreement or issue that can be solved by talking
No one brings it up
They fight/almost break-up
They make up and have sex
Repeat
Does that mean it's bad? Not necessarily. In fact, I quite like it. They have angsty moments that make me clench my chest. They have cute moments that make squeal out loud like a guinea pig waiting for lettuce. They have moments that make me swoon - eh, you probably get it. Good story + hot guys = mmmm.
The Couple(s): 10/10
I love the dynamic in this series. The classic "out of his league" falls for a "plane Jane." Maya is gorgeous (with his black hair) and popular with everyone. Despite this, he only has eyes for nerdy Nemugasa.
Sigh~
Their differences tend to be the crux of the angst though. Their insecurities about each other get explored as the grow as a couple.
Nemugasa is academically inclined - Maya, not so much.
Maya is really fucking attractive - Nemugasa is a mob character.
Maya is a romantic hot-head - Nemugasa is as dense as a rock...
Sex Scenes: 10/10
The most important - well, maybe important for only me... If I buy an explicit content manga, I'm looking to dine well, okay? In this case, you shall not starve. This story covers all sorts of shit. You will not get bored.
I foam at the mouth whenever I think about Maya.

Overall Rating: 10/10
There are 10 main volumes so far. They are fantastic.
There are also 3 side volumes
Akira's Side Story - If you like Akira/Shimakawa and Jutta. I think this is worth the buy. Do you need it to enjoy the main couple? No. Is it nice? Yes.
Don't Be Cruel +Plus 1 - Just side stories that take place between volumes 1 & 2 of the main series. Cute one shots and little bits. Worth a buy? Not really.
Don't Be Cruel +Plus 2 - Same as above, except spans a time frame later in their relationship. Unlike the first one though, this one I feel is worth the buy. It has cute stories (like one of Maya as a toddler puppy/pet - fuck it's so cute), and it also has some HOT sex scenes. If you like the series a lot, you should consider it.

Note
Are there lines in ITG that aren't in the album, or is everything already there?
Yeah! Most of the musical is sung through but there are little spoken/sung bits between songs they weren’t able to record that are in the script
There’s also a few scenes, like where Hildegard’s mother brings young Hildegard to Volmar, a monk at Jutta’s monastery, who explains the point of the cell and that Jutta had already been in there for some time.
Also the Mother speaks to young Hildegard & says it’s for her own good because she is “sick” and apparently hasn’t spoken since her sister’s death.
It’s all soooo interesting & really sad & I love it so much, it’s my baby 😭

Where e-waste goes and what it does once it gets there
Tumblr media
Reality Show by Fredo de Luna
Like me, you’ve probably never wondered past the pleasures you’ve taken out of your everyday “smart” objects or devices. They bring us the ability to experience life on an otherwise unimaginable scale. We experience joy, laughter, sadness, and an emotional rollercoaster of in between emotions with friends, family, strangers, or just our lonesome. The best part of enjoying our products is knowing that something “better, faster, smarter, thinner” is just around the corner waiting to be unearthed to the general population with the latest and greatest packed into a compact platform. Stop me if you’ve heard this one already but, “This is our best…ever made”.
Usually, that’s all it takes to immediately want to discard your current devices; not that you need to have it, but you want to have the latest desirable product on the market. Trends can be dangerous in more ways that are less obvious. To put this into perspective for you consider this; “In every 1 million recycled cell phones, 35,274 lbs. of copper, 772 lbs. of silver,75 lbs. of gold, and 33 lbs. of palladium can be recovered.” [2] That is a lot of precious metals! Yet “In 2016 roughlyonly 20% of global waste was collected and properly recycled” [2]. Which begs the following question. Have you ever stopped and ask yourself what happens once you decide your old smartphone or electronic devices are no longer worth keeping?
For those of us living in First World nations such as Canada, The United States, Japan, The European Union (to name a few) this is more of an afterthought than anything else. For all we know, we have a recycling program where our waste is collected and disposed of accordingly. Heck, once it’s in the trash it’s really not your problem; you’re doing your part to save the environment one sorting bin at a time and for that, you deserve a pat on the back. Or do you?
Do you really know what happens to your e-waste? Well, let me explain what happens to your e-waste. At some point your e-waste will journey from your home to a recycling facility, eventually, the more troublesome components that are too difficult to breakdown are exported from your country and imported into developing nation such as West Africa, India, China, Vietnam, or The Philippines (to name a few). Why has my garbage ended up on the other side of the world and what is it doing there you may ask? Well, in short, developing nations are paid to import your e-waste. There is typically an agreement in place between developed nations so that they can continue to send their garbage elsewhere instead of keeping the majority of it within their own borders. What happens next takes place at various landfill sites in these developing nations.
Firstly, there is a process coined informal recycling. This is a term that is used to describe manual (usually hard) labour whereas marginal groups are used to further break down these products or otherwise mine for precious metals such as gold or silver. The conditions are less than ideal and do an extenuating amount of harm to the local and external ecosystems in neighbouring communities, towns, cities, or even other countries. The damage occurs in many different instances which upset the delicate balance of the environment.

Let's take a closer look at air pollution in the atmosphere. This typically occurs when open-air burning is used to separate precious metals instead of a more refined process like an incinerator. These heavy metals such as mercury, beryllium, lead, cadmium, arsenic, and brominated flame retardants are extremely toxic. From this process, alone harmful particulates are released into the atmosphere which is carried by the wind into neighbouring ecosystems the results for which are more clear long term similar to the immediate effects on the individuals involved in this process.
The workers involved in these hazardous conditions are typically the first ones to be impacted directly through the absorption of heavy metals into their bodies via dioxins or persistent environmental pollutants (POP). A study concluded, “humans working with, and around electronic waste showed elevated blood levels of metals” [1] similar to the ones mentioned earlier. This is very unfortunate as the majority of these individuals who have had direct exposure to these toxins will develop long term illnesses such as cancer, organ damage, neurological damage digestive problems, bone issues and respiratory ailments. Also, with the accelerated output of dioxins into the air young mothers without the appropriate level of access to medical care can develop a build-up of dioxins in their breast milk which in turn is passed on to infants via breastfeeding. This is a cascading effect as the amount passed on usually exceeds The World Health Organization (WHO) tolerance for young infants affecting many future generations to come with similar ailments. You should know “dioxins accumulate in human bodies for roughly 7-11 years”.[4]
So now that you understand better how the labourers are affected let's dig further to see what happens when these toxins from e-waste are not properly contained and leach into the soil. The obvious result here is the “soil-crop food pathway” [2]is contaminated. Once the soil has been corrupted with heavy metals the crops are also essentially poisoned. This disrupts their agricultural production as the once nitrate rich farmlands become desolate and baron. Food yield is impacted not just for the human population but the animal ones as well.
Furthermore, to the soil being the tipping point let’s continue to burrow down and see the effect on groundwater. The obvious conclusion here is that it becomes contaminated with heavy metals too, which can leak out into nearby streams, ponds, lakes and rivers to do further harm. The water essentially becomes toxic, the inhabitants of those ecosystems develop higher levels of toxicity which means any fish or aquatic organisms become dangerous to consume

So, as you can see from my home to yours there is a series of very precise actions that result in the perpetuation of instability as a result of how e-waste is exported to offshore developing nations. In our next post, we will more closely explore the limiting factors that impact the ecosystem further. In the meantime, if you would like to learn more about this growing concern the BBC has written an excellent article worth exploring.

HOMECOMING
It had been two weeks since she was home, and she wasn’t sure if it was anxiety, but it felt longer. Nothing could prevent her from feeling uneasy about it.
She hasn’t been home yet, since she had to be in the infirmary for so long. Two weeks wasn’t anything when she was a grunt in Wutai, she didn’t even see much combat since they handed out rations to Wutai’s neighbouring towns.
But.. two weeks, away from Jutta, now that she was a teenager, was hell. How would she describe it? What new excuse would she find?
She wasn’t Dietrich when she was home, she was herself and therefore vulnerable. Hell, the more steps to their flat she climbed, the weaker she felt. Her boots felt heavier, and the whole uniform felt less like a uniform, instead, she felt it fit like old, sloughing skin on her back.
Things were always worse when she was home.
When she was home she had a chance to think about how tired she was, how desperate they were, and how, no matter what, she could seldom be there for Jutta. Especially now that she was a 1st Class, but her sister was in such an important, vulnerable stage of life.
What if someone harmed her? She couldn’t ever forgive herself if that happened.
But, she reaches the top of the stairs and walks down the hallway, feeling older with each step. Maybe, by the time she would be inside the kitchen, she would be old. White hair, milky eyes, and crow’s feet that she probably would have gotten from squinting instead of smiling. Wasted alabaster beauty, transforming into old, greyish-white tree bark.
Would she have her hearing? Would she have her sight?
Swallowing her anxiety, she approaches room 130 and inserts her key into the locks. The key turns in her hand, and time feels slow. She walks into their home, where she can finally put on civilian clothes, where she can put her feet up and have a bath. It feels empty, it seems no one is home, but the first person she sees isn’t Jutta.
No, instead of Jutta, she saw a Turk.
Her stomach drops and lurches forward, and bile does jumping jacks in her throat, her eyes are wild and animal-like, only soothed, barely, when Jutta sees her. Shock is all over her sister’s face, making her silvery slate grey eyes wide and saucer-like. She looks taller, she thinks, and it doesn’t comfort her.
“Amelia!” She yells before she leapt into her sister’s arms, cradling her face, and staring so deep into her eyes as if she was looking for something. Jutta isn’t this touchy, not usually, and it takes her everything to resist ducking away like a cat being overwhelmed by its owner.
“Amelia... Amelia..” She sees tears now, and so suddenly, she feels like shit. “Oh, I… I never thought I’d see you again. They told me, you probably wouldn’t ever wake up. You’re a SOLDIER, so you’re strong, that’s... That’s why you’re still alive right?”
Her arms are almost as tight as metal clamps, and she should feel comforted, but she feels so far away from the situation.
Why was there a Turk here?
“Jutta, I was only gone for two weeks. I’m usually gone for longer than that.”
It’s awkward, and the sentence barely spills from her lips, formerly just a prisoner of her thoughts, held down by teeth.
“Two.. two weeks?” Her tone is incredulous, confused, and for a second, she looks almost angry. “It hasn’t been two weeks, Amelia. If it were only two weeks, I wouldn’t have gone to the building to look for you. I wouldn’t have yelled at everyone to tell me what happened.”
She’s stuck somewhere, like a dead butterfly under a pin, a moment frozen in time.
“You’ve been gone for sixty-three days.”
It hits her like a truck. Now she isn’t just stuck, she’s trapped, and there’s no help coming for her. She realises why the Turk was here. Jutta went to the company building, searching for answers, and blew their cover.
“Why would you ever bring a Turk here, Jutta? Why would you ever go to Shinra? Don’t you know how dangerous it is walking these streets alone?” Betrayal bubbles in her stomach. The company never knew she had any family. It was something she omitted forever, for Jutta’s safety.
But now, they knew.
“I thought you were DEAD, for fuck’s sake! I kept on telling them to let me see the body, let me at least look at you one more time, and they never let me! They would only update me on your condition, and even then, I know that they don’t tell the public any of these things. I’m not stupid.”
Sixty-three days. That was over two months. Why would they tell her that it was only two weeks? Why didn’t she look at any calendars? All she could remember was getting shot, and then, physiotherapy. Nothing else.
“We are going to move your sister closer to the building. She’s Shinra now, even if she doesn’t work for us.” The Turk nears them, and all she can feel is apprehension. “How long has it been, since the two of you girls have been in a real house with separate bedrooms?”
She felt sick. She didn’t want to learn his name.
“You can’t tell Shinra about her. Please. I’ll do anything.” She doesn’t want to look at him, but he’s already locked eyes with her, striding over so slowly, so gracefully toward them.
“You’re right, of course, I can't. It would just be repeating information we already know.” He says, and his tone is deceptively neutral. “Your sister told us, and we appreciate the honesty. Don’t do anything reckless, Miss Dietrich, SOLDER 1sts are in short supply.”
She feels defeated, and it's all over her body. Jutta is a mix of angry, worried, and despaired. Finally home, but she wouldn’t even be here long.
She had no idea what to do, she felt dirty, she felt sick, and goosebumps pierce through her skin, so quickly the chill makes its way to her spine.
“Can I take a bath before we leave?” The only eye contact she’s making now is with the floor. Why did she feel like she had to ask permission all of a sudden?
“It’s your house.”
He waves her off, dismissively, reaching the exit of the small flat they’d shared since she was able to afford it. His hand reaches for the knob, but he delays his leave to say one last thing.
“We’ll send someone later to grab your things and the girl.”
And then, he’s gone. She can hear his footsteps receding the further he gets from the hall, and then soon, she hears nothing from him at all. But she still feels his presence, all over the flat. Everywhere.
“He’s been here, ever since I went to the building.” Jutta breathes, and it almost seems like the worry and anger have left her, but there are still strings of it in her tone, colouring her sentence. “It’s dangerous in Midgar when you’re fifteen and alone. The first thing he did was set up security cameras while I picked up a shift at the diner. He’s very polite. He hasn’t done anything to me.”
Despite her words, she doesn’t feel comforted.
That was nearly two months of a Turk being in her home that Shinra didn’t even know about. Spending time with the sister Shinra didn’t even know about. In her brain, the familiar thought of desperation rises. She was only doing this for money to support them. At least, that’s what she told herself before.
“You don’t hate Shinra, do you?” Jutta prods, and for a second, she doesn’t even consider answering. Not with security cameras.
Did she hate Shinra? No. She didn’t agree with a lot of its politics and the choices they made, but she didn’t hate the company.
How could she, when they still took her when she was an angry little whelp in Wall Market, working security for a smuggler and his family.
“Jutta, I don’t hate anything. The only real thing I hate is that I can’t change what happened.” And, now that they knew about her, she hated knowing that if she fucked up too bad, they would threaten what she cared about. Survival of the fittest, they called it.
“But, I don’t know how to feel knowing they know about you. It wasn’t safe before, and can’t be anywhere near safe now.”
Jutta frowns and begins to withdraw into herself. It hurts to see it, knowing how familiar the reaction was. “Listen, I’m a person just like you are. I’m not a dirty secret you can hide in a trunk forever. There are so many break-ins on this street, and like it or not, Shinra’s security is second to none.”
The words made her feel hollow. How could she now they’d keep her safe? How could she ever be sure she was making a correct decision when raising a child?
“I would’ve needed to provide for myself eventually. You got shot in the head and survived it. That’s amazing, and I’m so glad to have you back, but I’d be dead if that happened to me. Coming to the building and asking about you every day broke my heart into pieces, it made me feel helpless. We don’t have anywhere else to go if they don’t help us now..”
Jutta was taller. It didn’t just feel like it. She’d been growing while she lay somewhere in a hospital bed, while she floated in a Mako tank, ready for dissection.
“But you’re still so young.” Her stomach was tearing itself into knots. Was she going to cry?
“That’s why I need so much help.”
She nods but has a hard time looking at Jutta without feeling despondent in some way. “I’m going to take that bath now. I need some time to think.” And all the bells and whistles and consequences there were to be there.
“...I really missed you. I’m sorry I didn’t say that before.”
She stops in her steps, but still can’t look back at her sister.
“‘Missed you too.”
