Online is the best place to get quality masks, for sure, BUT I recommend against buying through Amazon because it is absolutely rife with counterfeit items which is bad news for safety.

Sidebar: if you're still wearing cloth or surgical masks, I strongly urge you, if at all possible, to upgrade to N95, KN95, KF94, or better. Cloth and surgical are only sufficient for droplet sized stuff and we now know COVID is aerosol sized and can get through them.

DISPOSABLE MASKS

3M Aura and Vflex: one of the most commonly recommended brands of N95. Where to buy?

- US: see here - Canada: see here - Multiple sizes per model. These suppliers are good for bulk ordering. If you aren't sure if something will fit you, check out the sample kits in the next recommendation - Price point: varies from $1-1.3 USD per mask depending on supplier

Breatheteq (US):

- KN95s that come in small, medium, large, or XS (kids) - Offers sample kits so you can test out what your size is - Comes in a few different colours. shoutout to the lavender - Earloop only - Price point: $69.75 USD for a 50-pack (~1.4 USD per mask)

Canadastrong (Canada):

- The Canadian equivalent to Breatheteq, but also carries N95s of other brands such as 3M Aura and Vflex, Vitacore, and Drager X-plore

Vitacore (Canada and US):

- N95 certified, but actually has 99% filtration - Both earloop and head strap versions (warning that the head strap seems to fit considerably smaller) - Regular and small adult sizes offered, also a kid's size - Price point: $33.99 for a 30-pack (~1.1 USD per mask)

Wellbefore (US, ships to Canada):

ELASTOMERIC MASKS

Flomask (US, ships to Canada):

- Reusable elastomeric mask (with replaceable filters) that meets KN95 standards - Two adult sizes (low/medium nose ridge and medium/high nose ridge) and a kid's size - Adjustable straps - Price point: $122 USD. 50-pack replacement filters: $81.46 (filters to be changed after 20-40 hours of use, depending on filter type)

A humble P100 elastomeric respirator from your local Home Depot or similar store! Magnitudes cheaper than the Flo mask (both the respirator itself and the filters)--however, I can't offer estimates for how often filters should be replaced. May not look pretty, but the most economical option for the highest degree of filtration if you aren't self-conscious.

General advice:

N95 or higher are the most reliable. They normally come with head straps, which offer better protection by making a tighter seal around your face.

But fit and comfort are the most important! Find a mask that fits your face and leaves the least amount of gap possible. KN95s are often more comfortable and breathable--find what's right for you.

You can wear different masks for different situations depending on risk level!

If you're hesitant to buy online, here's advice on how to tell if your respirator is legitimate.

A SIP drinking valve can be installed on any disposable mask to allow you to drink in public with less risk.

Yep. It's been over a year that I've been saying COVID is causing, essentially, C-AIDS. That is, Covid-Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

The "COVID is the new HIV" idea is supported by current studies showing viral persistence of COVID in various places throughout the body, long after infection. It doesn't just cause some damage and then completely go away.

Our children, the ones who survive to adulthood, will not forgive us.

The best gift you can give your children in a world of climate crisis and social collapse will be "the fewest COVID infections possible" (both for themselves and you).

Mask the fuck up. Wear an N95, KN95, KF94, or better mask. Use HEPA filters or a Corsi-Rosenthal box. Exchange the air with outside air.

At-home rapid tests are giving a lot of false negatives (because they were build to detect the original version), so do test ... but don't take a single negative result as "definitely don't have it". If you test positive, you're contagious. Even if it's been 5, 10, or more days.

Masks for covid: *Even baggy blue medical masks significantly reduce the spread of illness, both symptomatic and asymptomatic. This worked so well we drove the Yamagata-b strain of flu into extinction in 2020-2021. Quality respirators with a good fit (kf94 or better) will keep you from inhaling 80-100% of aerosols in a given ebvironment. Have cute patterns and charms and you can customize some to look really cool. Keeps you from catching any other airborne illness too. Works against smoke and dust that also have massive health risks. Keeps disabled people safe in public, a space they should be able to exist without fear unless you're a nazi. I'm literally asking you to wear them to the store and when you feel sick holy shit. Wearing a mask only at protests helps to back up the fascist demands for mask bans.*

yeah like, masks good, being exposed to COVID and TB not good, but it is untrue that being exposed to TB will prevent you from working in medicine

it is important to be as accurate as possible when discussing these issues

I have friends who have to get chest XR, and some who have been advised to get preemptively treated for TB (which BTW is an unfun treatment! It’s months of antibiotics, multiple kinds! Definitely don’t get exposed to TB if you can avoid it!). But they are still actively practicing medicine
