ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan’s main opposition leader and former prime minister, Imran Khan, was arrested Tuesday, authorities said, raising the stakes of the country’s political crisis and sparking clashes between his supporters and police.

Footage showed demonstrations across the country. Tear gas and water cannons were reportedly deployed against Khan supporters in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and other cities.

Pakistani authorities said Khan was arrested in a corruption case that has been evolving for months. The former prime minister stands accused of money laundering and faces a number of other charges in separate cases, all of which he has rejected.

Pakistani authorities said they had unsuccessfully sought Khan’s cooperation in the corruption probe. He was subsequently arrested by officers on high court premises in the capital, Islamabad, where he was to attend hearings linked to different cases on Tuesday. Footage distributed by Khan’s party showed the opposition leader being pushed into a law enforcement vehicle. Officials said the arresting officers — members of a paramilitary force — were operating on a warrant from the country’s anti-corruption watchdog.

They denied accusations from Khan’s allies that the former prime minister was beaten during his arrest. Neither side immediately provided evidence to back its claims.

Members of Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or Movement for Justice, say they suspect political motives behind the arrest. The government has repeatedly sought to delay key regional votes this year after Khan performed above expectations in by-elections last October.

The country’s deteriorating economic situation has become the top concern among many voters, with the current government and Khan trading blame over the root causes of the crisis. Financial experts fear that the country may be on the verge of defaulting on its international loans.

Khan, who was ousted as prime minister in April 2022, was arrested after public disputes with the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the country’s powerful military. Khan recently accused a senior officer of involvement in an assassination attempt against him in November, which he narrowly survived.

Khan has described himself for months as the victim of a plot, starting with what he says was a Western move to oust him last year. There have been several attempts to arrest him since, including one in March that resulted in fierce clashes and left many Pakistanis injured.

As he left his residence in the city of Lahore to attend the scheduled court hearings in Islamabad early Tuesday, Khan released a video message in which he said he is “ready to go to jail,” but added that the accusations against him are unsubstantiated.

Later, in a response to Khan on Twitter, Sharif, the prime minister, accused his predecessor of “blatant lies, untruths, U-turns, and vicious attacks on institutions.” He charged that Khan was bending “the judiciary to your whims and behaving as if rules don’t apply to you.”

Sindh is a lower riparian province and its total dependency based on Indus River for water. But since last few decades, Sindh is vulnerable and faces quiet water shortage from upstream overreaching water flow. Even though, Sindh still receives 42 percent of the water share from the Indus Basin just according to Water Accord of 1991 (an agreement signed on the sharing of water between the provinces of Pakistan) whereas Sindh’s population was roughly 30 million in 1998. According to recent census of 2017, Sindh’s headcount about 50 million populations. Yet, the water availability has not been fairly revised and nor transparently ensured to practice in accordance with the current population growth, increased water consumption, rapid industrialization and urbanization occupies in the province. An unfair water distribution in country has already created concerns in the provinces. State policies and actions still seems fails in dealing with water crisis and proved water conflict which further resulted in appearance of internal political proxy war between the provinces inside the country. Generally, in rural and especially in deltaic areas of Sindh, the potable water is unavailable. The surface water is an invisible while the underground water is saline in the most part of deltaic villages. Women and girls have no any access to collect or fetch safe drinking water from nearby distance. The common rural women with village girls almost covers a far and long distance and seems roaming in search of water for their homes and families. While the local migration is going on towards Garo and Karachi as a result of unavailability of fresh water and the area gradually becomes deserted.

کراچی نے دنیا کی بدترین ٹرانسپورٹ رکھنے کا بین الاقوامی ریکارڈ اپنے نام کر لیا

کراچی کے ٹرانسپورٹ انتظام کو عالمی جریدے بلوم برگ نے اپنی رپورٹ میں دنیا کا بدترین انتظام قرار دیا ہے جبکہ ملک کے لیے نصف سے زائد آمدنی کمانے والے شہر کو سیاسی یتیم قرار دیا گیا ہے۔ عالمی جریدے بلوم برگ نے اپنی حالیہ رپورٹ میں کراچی کے انفرااسٹرکچر کا یوں نقشہ کھینچا ہے کہ دہائیوں پرانے ٹرانسپورٹ انتظام پر کراچی کی 42 فیصد آبادی انحصار کرتی ہے، سڑکیں ٹوٹی ہوئی ہیں جبکہ سِگنل کا انتظام بھی آٹو میٹڈ نہیں ہے۔ اس نے لکھا کہ شہر قائد پاکستان کی آمدنی کا آدھے سے زائد حصہ کماتا ہے، یہاں بڑی بڑی ملٹی نیشنل کمپنیز اور بینکس کے دفاتر ہیں اور اپنی تمام تر اہمیت کے باوجود یہ شہر سیاسی یتیم ہے۔

شہر کے سابق میئر کہتے رہے کہ ان کے پاس شہر کا 12 فیصد کنٹرول ہے، وفاقی اور صوبائی حکومتوں کے پاس باقی کنٹرول ہے۔ خیال رہے کہ صوبائی حکومت ازخود ٹرانسپورٹ کے بڑے منصوبے نہیں کر سکتی اور وفاق نے گئے برس 162 ارب روپے کے جس منصوبے کا اعلان کیا تھا جس کے بارے میں شہری حکومتی کہتی ہے کہ اس مد میں کوئی پیسہ جاری نہیں کیا گیا۔ وفاق البتہ 24 ارب 65 کروڑ رواں سال جون تک خرچ کرنے اور 17 ارب 90 کروڑ رواں سال مختص کرنے کا کہہ رہی ہے۔ حالیہ بارشوں کے بعد ہونے والی تباہی کے بعد وزیراعظم عمران خان نے کراچی کے لیے 1100 ارب روپے کے پیکیج کا اعلان کیا، جو آئی ایم ایف پروگرام میں لیے قرض سے بھی زائد ہے۔

شہر کے مہنگے ترین علاقے میں پانی ٹینکرز مافیا فراہم کر رہی ہے، کیونکہ پانی کا ایک منصوبہ 18 سالوں سے مکمل نہیں ہو رہا ہے اور ہیوی ٹریفک کے گلیوں تک پہنچنے پر سڑکیں مزید ٹوٹ پھوٹ کا شکار ہو جاتی ہیں۔ گزشتہ پندرہ سالوں سے شہر کا سرکلر ریلوے کا منصوبہ بحال نہیں ہو رہا، کیونکہ کئی ریلوے پٹریاں ملک کے پسماندہ علاقوں سے روزگار کے لیے آئے لوگوں کے قبضے میں ہیں اور قبضہ ختم کروانے اور ان کی بحالی کا کوئی انتظام تاحال نہیں ڈھونڈا جاسکا۔ کراچی کے علاقے کسی زمانے میں سرکلر ریلوے کے ذریعے بہت اچھی طریقہ سے منسلک تھے لیکن بدعنوانی اور بدانتظامی پورے نظام کو کھا گئی۔

’جتنے پیسے اتنا پانی‘

پاکستان کے سب سے بڑے شہر کراچی کے علاقے اورنگی کے رہائشیوں کو پہلی بار گھر کے قریب میٹھا پانی دستیاب ہوا ہے، پہلے یہ لوگ ٹینکروں کا کھارا پانی استعمال کرتے تھے۔ بقول ان کے کھارے پانی کے باعث انھیں پیٹ کی تکلیف رہتی تھی اور اب کراچی واٹر بورڈ اس غریب بستی کو مفت ٹینکر فراہم کر رہا ہے۔

لیکن ہر بستی کے رہائشی اتنے خوش نصیب نہیں۔ مچھر کالونی میں ایک گھر کے باہر بھی لوگ ہاتھوں میں برتن اٹھائے اپنی باری کے منتظر ہیں پر یہاں مفت نہیں بلکہ پیسوں سے پانی دستیاب ہے۔

گھر کے مالک نے بتایا کہ وہ تین روپے میں پانچ لیٹر جبکہ پانچ روپے میں آٹھ لٹر پانی فروخت کرتے ہیں شام تک ان کی ڈھائی سے تین سو روپے تک آمدن ہو جاتی ہے۔

مچھر کالونی میں پانی کی لائن موجود ہے لیکن پانی صرف دکانوں پر ہی دستیاب ہے۔ غریب بستی کے لوگوں کی آمدنی پر یہ ایک بڑا بوجھ ہے۔

مسمات زرینہ کچھی نے بتایا وہ سارا دن جھینگے صاف کرتی ہیں تب جاکر سو روپے جڑتے ہیں جبکہ انھیں روزانہ 50 سے 60 روپے میٹھے پانی کے لیے دینے پڑتے ہیں جو پینے اور باورچی خانے میں استعمال ہوتا ہے، باقی فرش دھونے اور واش روم وغیرہ کے لیے زیر زمین کھارے پانی استعمال کرتی ہیں۔

صحت کے عالمی ادارے ڈبلیو ایچ او کے معیار کے مطابق کراچی کی ضرورت

سو ملین گیلن پانی ہے لیکن دستیاب صرف ساڑہ پانچ سو ملین گیلن ہے، حب ڈیم سے عدم دستیابی کے باعث سو ملین گیلن پانی کم ہوجاتا ہے۔

ایم ڈی واٹر بورڈ ہاشم رضا زیدی کا کہنا ہے کہ نظام بوسیدہ ہونے کی وجہ سے 510 ملین گیلن پانی آتا ہے جس میں 270 ملین گیلن اسٹیل ملز، صنعتیں ، پورٹ قاسم اور ڈی ایچ اے جیسے بڑے کھاتے داروں کے پاس چلا جاتا باقی پانی گھریلو صارفین کو فراہم کیا جاتا ہے۔

کراچی واٹر بورڈ کے مطابق شہر کی تقریباً 30 فیصد آْبادی ٹینکروں کے ذریعے پانی حاصل کرتی ہے، ان علاقوں میں واٹر بورڈ کا نظام ہی دستیاب نہیں۔ شہر میں اس وقت بھی 20 سے زائد ہائیڈرنس موجود ہیں جبکہ قلت اور چوری کی شکایت پر سو سے زائد غیر قانونی ہائیڈرنٹس توڑ دیےگئے تھے۔

شہر کے مغربی علاقوں کے لیے قائم سخی حسن ہائیڈرنٹ سے روزانہ 12 سو سے زائد ٹینکر پانی بھرتے ہیں، جن میں سے صرف ڈھائی سو کے قریب عوام کو مفت سروس فراہم کر رہے ہیں۔

سرکاری ہائیڈرنٹس سے سرکاری نرخ فی روپیہ فی گیلن ہے، لیکن ٹینکر مالک کہتے ہیں کہ جتنی پانی کی مقدار اور فاصلہ زیادہ۔ پیسے بھی اسی حساب سے لیے جاتے ہیں۔

ایک ٹینکر مالک نے بتایا کہ رینجرز نے فی گاڑی بھرائی 70 روپے ہے لیکن وصول سات سو روپے کیے جاتے ہیں۔ فی پھرے پر ان کا خرچہ ڈھائی ہزار روپے آتا ہے اور وہ آگے تین سے ساڑہ تین ہزار روپے میں فروخت کرتے ہیں۔

کراچی واٹر بورڈ کے ایم ڈی ہاشم رضا زیدی تسلیم کرتے ہیں کہ اس کاروبار میں استحصال کا عنصر موجود ہے تاہم ان کی یہ کوشش ہوتی ہے کہ واٹر بورڈ کے جو ماتحت ہائیڈرنٹس ہیں وہاں سے منصفانہ تقسیم ہو۔

’اب جس ٹینکرکو دن میں 4 کے بجائے ایک پھیرا مل رہا ہے تو وہ 5 پھیروں کے پیسے لے رہا۔ یہ خالص پرائیوٹ بزنس ہے اس کے باوجود انھوں نے اس بات کی تشہیر کی تھی کہ اگر کسی کو شکایت ہے تو اطلاع دیں لیکن لوگ شکایت نہیں کرتے انھیں معلوم ہے کہ اگر ایسا کیا تو اگلی بار ٹینکر نہیں آئے گا۔

شہر میں پانی کی قلت کے ساتھ منرل اور ٹریٹیٹ واٹر کا استعمال بھی بڑھ رہا ہے۔ مختلف ناموں اور معیار کے ساتھ یہ پانی 25 روپے سے لے کر 80 روپے تک دستیاب ہے۔جس کی جیب جتنی اجازت دے اس کے پاس اتنا ہی پانی دستیاب ہے

’کراچی میں پانی کے مسائل‘ کتاب کے مصنف اور این ڈی ڈی یونیورسٹی کے استاد پروفیسر نعمان احمد کا کہنا ہے کہ کچھ تو مستند کمپنیاں ہیں جو منظم طریقے سے کاروبار کرتی ہیں اور کہیں پر واٹر بورڈ کی لائن سے پانی چوری کرلیا جاتا ہے یا زمین پانی کو آرو پلانٹس کے ذریعے میٹھا بناکر مارکیٹ میں فراہم کیا جاتا ہے۔

شہر میں اگر گھر کے نلکے میں پانی آ بھی رہا ہے تو کئی گھرانے یہ پانی پینے کے لیے استعمال نہیں کرتے۔ایم ڈی واٹر بورڈ ہاشم رضا اعتراف کرتے ہیں کہ لائن میں سیوریج کا پانی مل جاتا ہے، جس کی وجہ یہ ہے کہ شاذو نادر ہی کوئی لائن ہو جہاں سے غیر قانونی کنیکشن نہ لیے گئے ہوں ۔

کراچی میں پانی کی صورتحال سے اس تاثر کو تقویت ملتی ہے کہ پانی کی فراہمی اب ریاست کی ذمہ داری نہیں بلکہ آپ کی جیب کا کمال ہے۔ جس کی جیب جتنی اجازت دے اس کے پاس اتنا ہی پانی دستیاب ہے۔

کراچی کی فکر سارے پاکستان کو ہونی چاہئے

شہر قائد میں سبز بسیں بھی مسافروں کی خدمت کر رہی ہیں اور سرخ بسیں بھی۔ سرخ اور سبز رنگ دیکھ کر بہت سے پرانے زمانے یاد آرہے ہیں۔ اسلامی جمعیت طلبہ کے پُر جوش نوجوانوں کی آوازیں’ایشیا سبز ہے۔‘ نیشنل اسٹوڈنٹس فیڈریشن، پیپلز اسٹوڈنٹس فیڈریشن کے پُر عزم نوجوانوں کی صدائیں ’ایشیا سرخ ہے۔‘ پھر بسیں جل رہی ہیں۔ مارشل لائوں کے خلاف شدید احتجاج۔ بس جلانا بھی ایک فن ہے۔ 80 سالہ اشتیاق اظہر پربس کو آگ لگانے کا مقدمہ۔ سندھ انسٹی ٹیوٹ آف یورالوجی کے ہر دلعزیز پروفیسر ادیب رضوی پر بھی زمانۂ طالب علمی میں بس جلانے کا الزام۔ بس اونرز ایسوسی ایشن کے ارشاد بخاری کی پریس کانفرنس۔ سرکاری بسیں۔ پرائیویٹ بسیں۔ آج جب کراچی بے شُمار مسائل سے دوچار ہے، جب شہر کسی با اثر قیادت کی تلاش میں ہے۔ مہنگائی نے تین کروڑ نفوس کی زندگی اجیرن کر دی ہے۔ اس وقت کراچی کے ایک دو راستوں پر نئی نویلی ایئر کنڈیشنڈ بسوں کی آغوش کا میسر آجانا اللہ تعالیٰ کے حضور سجدۂ شکر بجا لانا تو بنتا ہے۔

اور اللہ کے ان بندوں کی بھی ممنونیت، جنہوں نے یہ اہتمام کیا ہے۔ شدت کی گرمی میں۔ پیٹرول جب 248 روپے لیٹر ہو گیا ہے۔ اس وقت سرخ یا سبز بس اپنی منزل تک پہنچنے کیلئے میسر آجائے تو زبان پر بے ساختہ ’الحمد للہ‘ تو آئیگا۔ جی تو چاہ رہا ہے کہ اس سہولت سے فیض یاب ہوا جائے۔ ان شاء اللہ کسی دن اس آرزو کو بھی رخصتِ پرواز دیں گے۔ پھر اس سفر کی رُوداد بھی حاضر خدمت کریں گے۔ ان ملکوں کا بھی شکریہ، جنہوں نے یہ بسیں بنائیں۔ اور ان بسوں کو بھی شاباش۔ اب دیکھنا یہ ہے کہ پاکستان کے سب سے بڑے تجارتی، صنعتی و اقتصادی مرکز اور سب سے زیادہ آبادی والے شہر کے لوگ ان بسوں سے کیا سلوک کرتے ہیں؟ ہم شہری کسی بھی حکومت کو جو ٹیکس ادا کرتے ہیں، اس کے بدلے میں حکومت ہمیں ٹرانسپورٹ اور علاج گاہیں فراہم کرتی ہے۔

آج اتوار ہے۔ بیٹوں بیٹیوں۔ پوتوں پوتیوں نواسوں نواسیوں سے ملنے، ان کے سوالات کے جوابات دینے کا دن۔ آج اس شہر کی باتیں کرنی ہیں جسے ہم شہر قائد کہتے ہیں۔ جو بر صغیر کے عظیم لیڈر۔ قائد اعظم محمد علی جناح کا شہر پیدائش بھی ہے۔ اور مدفن بھی۔ جہاں وہ ابدی نیند سو رہے ہیں۔ اس شہر کے مدرسے میں انہوں نے پرائمری تعلیم حاصل کی۔ انہیں ہمیشہ اس شہر سے بے پناہ محبت رہی۔ وہ اس شہر کو دنیا کے حسین ترین شہروں میں دیکھنا چاہتے تھے۔ وہ کہتے تھے کہ میرے دل میں اس کے لیے تو قدر ہے ہی کہ یہ میری جائے پیدائش ہے۔ لیکن اس لیے بھی کہ اب یہ ایک خود مختار اور آزاد مملکت پاکستان کی جائے پیدائش بن گیا ہے۔ 25 اگست 1947 کو کراچی کارپوریشن کی جانب سے پیش کردہ شہریوں کے سپاسنامے کے جواب میں تقریر میں ان کے دل سے نکلے ہوئے یہ الفاظ ملاحظہ ہوں، ’’کراچی کوئی معمولی شہر نہیں قدرت نے اسے غیر معمولی نعمتیں عطا کی ہیں۔ جو خصوصاً جدید ضروریات اور حالات کے لیے موزوں ہیں۔

اب یہ بات پورے اعتماد کے ساتھ کہی جاسکتی ہے کہ وہ دن دور نہیں جب اس کا شُمار دنیا کے اوّل درجے کے شہروں میں ہونے لگے گا۔ نہ صرف اس کے ہوائی اڈّے ، بندرگاہیں اوراصل شہر بھی بہترین شہروں میں شامل ہوں گے۔‘‘ کراچی میں آپ کو پورا پاکستان اپنی صفات، عیوب، محاسن، مزاج اور جبلتوں کے ساتھ نظر آسکتا ہے۔ گلگت بلتستان والے یہاں شہر کی خدمات انجام دے رہے ہیں۔ آزاد کشمیر والے یہاں تجارت میں مصروف ہیں۔ بلوچستان کے بلوچ اور پشتون یہاں محنت کر رہے ہیں۔ خیبر پختونخوا کے پٹھان یہاں شہر کی تعمیر میں اپنا کردار ادا کر رہے ہیں۔ سرائیکی بولنے والوں کی بڑی تعداد اپنی ثقافت کے رنگوں کے ساتھ موجود ہے۔ مرکزی اور شمالی پنجاب کے ہم وطن اپنے زور بازو سے رزق حلال کما رہے ہیں۔ سندھ کے ماتھے کا تو کراچی جھومر ہے۔ سندھ کا قابل فخر حصّہ۔ سندھ کے ماہرین تعلیم، انجینئر، دانشور کراچی کو ان بلندیوں کی طرف لے جارہے ہیں جو قائد اعظم کی آرزو تھی۔

کراچی پاکستان کی آن ہے، شان ہے۔ یہ سب کو امان دیتا ہے۔ مگر اس پر ظلم بھی سب ہی کرتے ہیں۔ کراچی کی روح پر مقامی اسٹیبلشمنٹ کے گھائو بھی ہیں۔ بین الاقوامی اسٹیبلشمنٹ کے بھی۔ کراچی میں فرقہ واریت نے بھی خون بہایا ہے۔ لسانی تنظیموں نے بھی لاشیں گرائی ہیں۔ ہر قسم کا تعصب یہاں آگ لگاتا رہا ہے۔ یہی کراچی ہے۔ جس نے ملک کو عبدالستار ایدھی دیا۔ ایدھی ایمبولینسیں دیں۔ ادیب رضوی بھی اسی کراچی کی پہچان ہیں۔ چھیپا بھی اس کراچی کی شناخت ہے۔ انڈس اسپتال والے ڈاکٹرعبدالباری بھی کراچی کے بیٹے ہیں۔ سٹیزن فائونڈیشن بھی کراچی والوں کا تحفہ ہے۔ رتھ فائو کو بھی کراچی نے آغوش دی تھی۔ کراچی پاکستان کو اچھی طرح سمجھتا ہے۔ پاکستان کی اقتصادی شہ رگ ہے۔ پاکستان بھر کی کئی ضروریات پوری کرتا ہے لیکن پاکستان کے اکثر لوگ اور ادارے کراچی کو اچھی طرح نہیں سمجھتے۔ اسلئے 22 کروڑ میں سے 3 کروڑ کے حقوق ہمیشہ نظر انداز ہوتے ہیں۔

یہ 3 کروڑ پورے پاکستان سے آئے ہوئے ہیں۔ کراچی منی پاکستان ہے۔ آپ جب اس کی بجلی، پانی، ٹرانسپورٹ اور امن و امان کی ضروریات پوری نہیں کرتے تو پورے پاکستان کو محروم کرتے ہیں۔ یہ پورے پاکستان کا دروازہ ہے۔ یہ شہر علم کا مرکز ہے۔ علاج معالجے کا سر چشمہ ہے۔ صنعت کا منبع ہے۔ تجارت کا دہانہ ہے۔ اس کی قیادت کا حق اس کے بیٹوں کے پاس ہونا چاہئے۔ اس کا قائد بھی ویسا ہی عظیم ہونا چاہئے جیسا عظیم یہ شہر ہے۔ اس قائد کا تدبر اور ادراک تین کروڑ کے شعور کا نچوڑ ہونا چاہئے۔ قائد کے اس شہر کا تحفظ، ترقی، مسائل کے حل کی فکر صرف کراچی والوں کو نہیں۔ پورے پاکستان والوں کو ہونی چاہئے کیوں کہ ان سب کے پیارے یہاں تلاش رزق میں موجود ہیں۔

Humanity's ships are inefficient and their crew imprecise.

By volume, the ship was seventy-odd percent water, from what she understood, give or take. The UTN Karachay was one of the oldest ships in the Yanovsky-Zaton-class, but by virtue of being mostly civilian vessels, they managed to only look somewhat old compared to the military vessels of the same period. The Aral, Tulare, and Zo’ar were all soon to be retired, but Karachay had a few more years left in her – though, Vivian wouldn’t have minded much if she was soon to join her sister ships. The hydroponics felt like they were barely functional some days, and, compared to more modern vessels like the Superior-class or the Vostok-class, it could easily feel cramped at days.

She shuddered every time that she thought about how her four-armed friend would be getting along in their bunk. Sure, the Keid was a fair bit shorter than her, but far more stout. Almost like a dwarf, she mused when she had first met them, or a garden gnome, but wider. The exchange program between ships had been ongoing for a few years now, now evolving into just seeing how compatible, crew-wise, the two races were.

For what it was worth, the Keid made great assistants.

“It seems rather inefficient to call it call ‘hydroponics’, Vivian.” She’d gotten distracted by the small waterfall fountain in the room to forget that they were with her. Several small sections of the room had been cleared of some of the plants, allowing for just some small earth grasses (and weeds, to the frustration of Doctor Morgane and her own delight) to grow. One of those sections even had a small apple tree and a nice bench that far-too-often she slept on. It was calmer here, and for Earther’s like her, it felt like home.

For what it was also worth, Leaven had forced her to become a great teacher, too. She sighed. “You’re not wrong, Leaven.” With a small grunt, she stood up, dusting her knees off. The tranquility was ruined; back to work.

“So why do you?”

“…How long have you been aboard?”

“Six months and…” two of their arms held their hips, one of their hands held their chin, and the last seemed to stay motionless until they held it up as added, far too excitedly for the question Vivian posed, “nine days!”

“And you’re just asking now why we call it all hydroponics?”

“Yes!”

Very carefully, Vivian bit back the urge to answer “because it’s less complicated”. “Well, when the Karachy was built, it was built with only a hydroponics system.”

“And later retrofitted with an aeroponics system.”

“Yes.”

“While also keeping a hydroponics system?”

“Why are you asking that like it’s a question, Leaven. You’ve seen the hydroponics system.” The hydroponics lab itself was now below them, and the aeroponics lab below that, and the doctor’s quarters below that. She was glad the rest of the crews’ quarters were well away from that.

A bubble rose through the transparent aluminum viewport wall beside her as Leaven’s mouth closed, and even with their alien features, she could still see that they were thinking about how best to word their next question. “Because… it makes no sense to keep an outdated system?”

Vivian shrugged. “Some of us grew attached to the plants we were growing.”

“The plants aboard the Karachay when it was launched?”

“Yeah. They really took root here.”

“…Was that a ‘pun’?”

“Not intentionally.”

“I… see,” Leaven murmured. After a moment, they added, “That means they’re from when Gaia was going through its climate crisis?”

Earth, she thought to herself, please just call it Earth. She knew why it wasn’t just called Earth officially – it made translating easier to make their home planet have a distinct name – but it was like nails against a chalkboard every time she heard anything but. “Yeah, give or take,” she replied as she tugged a set of small, red fruits from one of the micronized plants that adorned this section of the hydroponics bay, dropping them into a small bag hung off of her arm.

“And… this area is retrofitted too, right?”

“Yep.” She tugged more of the fruits down from another plant,

“And you still call it hydroponics.”

“Yeah.”

“Despite the fact that it’s clearly far closer to a conventional Terran farming situation, just with the crops micronized.”

“…Yes.”

“And you could solve the need for discussions like this by just renaming the sections.”

“We could, Leaven, but then we’d have to call them by three different names instead.”

“Would that not be more accurate?”

Vivian could only sigh. “It’d be more annoying in conversation, though.”

“But it would be more accurate.”

“We trust each other to know that it’s not just hydroponics.”

“…That still doesn’t make it more accurate.”

“We’d also have to pay to re-etch all of the signage across the ship.”

“Ah. So you’re cheap.”

“Quiet, Leaven,” Vivian flatly stated, rolling her eyes.

“Am I wrong?”

“No, but yesterday, you went on a rant about how the aluminum is a weakness in our glaucite hull, and I had to explain to you how long humanity dreamed of being among the stars like this that we can’t help but to want to admire it.”

“It’s a weakness in the engineering of the hull.”

“And did you ever see a clear sky growing up?”

“The sky produced mostly acid rain year-round, so no.”

“Exactly, Leaven. Exactly. Besides, this is a civilian ship.”

“Which is why it has a point defense cannon on each side of the hull?”

“Space pirates, Leaven.”

“They don’t exist!”

“Not yet they don’t.”

“Paranoid, cheap, inefficient, and imprecise.”

“Unimaginative, pedantic, and short.”

“…That’s a personal attack.”

With a deep breath in, Vivian closed her eyes. Gently, she rested a hand on Leaven’s top shoulder, and as she opened them back up, she smiled and said, “Yes. It’s also true.”

“Rude.”

“You did just call us paranoid. Besides, we spent the past thirty years at war. We’d rather have our civilian ships like this safe than sorry.”

“…That’s still paranoia, Vivian.”

“…Yes. Yes it is.” For a few seconds, she looked past Leaven to the transparent aluminum once more, before she laughed and shook her head. Out of the corner of her view, at this angle, one of said cannons was just barely visible, mounted on the glaucite wall practically on the opposite side of where the deposit chute was mounted. “Do you want to do the deposit today?”

“Are we not drying those ones?”

“People’ve been complaining.”

“They want it more –”

“Yeah! I don’t get it either.”

“…Doctor Morgane?”

“Yeah. She’s a weirdo.”

With a shrug – all four of their arms, this time – Leaven took the bag from her and made their way over to the chute’s hatch, opening it, dropping the fruit inside in, and shutting it. Vivian simply gave them a thumbs up and a nod.

“You run it right through a cage attached to your ship’s main water supply,” they noted simply.

“It’s easier than running a new flow specifically to process them.”

“Doesn’t that risk the pulp getting through the machines and into the rest of the water?”

“Eh, yeah. It also can make it a little bit radioactive, too.”

“Ah, right, because you use your water storage as shielding.”

“Cheaper than thicker hulls.”

“And risks losing your entire water supply in a hull breach!”

“Oi, it’s sectioned off!”

“Poorly!” Leaven was clearly exasperated with her.

“Look, the radiation in the fruit is no worse than a banana.”

“Not the point, Vivian.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Despite the frustrated look on the Keid’s face, Vivian’d been stuck with Leaven for long enough to know that they were about to break out laughing. Wiggling her eyebrows at them, it was enough to send them over the edge. “I’m surprised you haven’t made a note about how we then have to roast them to dry them out again after this – and then of course roast them again to get them ready to prepare.”

“It takes up less space than having a separate machine. It’s the one efficient thing.”

“Not more efficient than being able to cook multiple things at once?”

“I have accepted that the cheapness of your kind overrides some amount of efficiency at times. Besides, the machine seems to be big enough to allow for that, no?”

Vivian just shrugged. “Eh. Maybe.”

It was Leaven’s turn to just blink at her. She just smiled back.

“Now c’mon,” she added, “we gotta go check on the plants in hydroponics proper before Morgane gets frustrated with us for taking forever down here.”

“Won’t everyone else be more frustrated with the fact you’re not in the galley?”

“They can make their things too, Leaven.”

“Don’t you do it the best, though?”

“Why do you think we’re going to hydroponics?”

“…Because she’s in the galley?”

Vivian winked at Leaven. “Bingo.”

“…So you’re ‘working’.” Leaven had learned from her to make air quotes, but there was something about seeing it with all four hands that still felt wrong to her. She wasn’t sure if it would be okay for her to correct them, however.

“Yes.”

“Wouldn’t it be more efficient if you were just the chef?”

“Really, I’d be more of a barista.”

“Vivian.”

“Yeah, it would be.”

“…So why aren’t you?”

“Someone’s gotta prepare the rest.”

Leaven paused, before they shook their head. “Is every ship like this?”

“No, not every ship is dedicated to water and growing their own food.”

Leaven blinked a few times at her, as if they didn’t expect that answer. “Really?”

“Only most of them. Here, we all got to choose a plant when we came aboard.”

“…That’s a weird tradition.” Vivian was about to open her mouth to explain it, when Leaven added, “Wait, then who chose these?”

Now was Vivian’s turn to laugh. “Oh. No one did. Have you ever seen a crew function without coffee?”

“The Ness had tea. And the Nun-Kun.”

“Same thing.”

Karachi stakeholders come together to solve its water crisis

The decision was made at a meeting of all stakeholders. He also removed misconceptions of the stakeholders over the K-IV project and vowed to complete it. The forum decided to control 30% water losses amounting to 174 million gallons per day (MGD) and water theft through administrative measures. Related: The reason for Karachi’s Qayyumabad water crisis The multi-party and stakeholders conference was attended by Chief Secretary Mumtaz Shah, Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani, Adviser to CM Murtaza Wahab, Waqar Mehdi and Rashid Rabbani, Mayor Waseem Akhtar, Local Government Secretary Khalid Hyder Shah, Karachi Water, and Sewerage Board SecretaryAsadullah Khan, among others. Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Haleem Adil Shaikh and Junaid Shah, Khwaja Izhar, Mohammad Hussain, Shahi Syed, Younis Buneri, Sarwat Eijaz Qadri, PSP chief Mustafa Kamal, Arshad Vohra, Asif Hasnain, and several others attended it too. The CM said that there was a serious water crisis in the city. “In our system, hardly 480 MGD water is available against a requirement of 1000 MGD. If we distribute it equitably, everyone would be able to get a sip of water and, if distributed inequitably, then a few people would be able to quench their thirst while others would die thirsty,” he said. Shah said that in order to find out a solution, he had invited a multi-party conference that included all political and non-political stakeholders. “Our presence here shows that we all have pain in our hearts for the people of Karachi who are facing water shortage,” he said. “I want you to discuss the matter with open hearts and minds, and find out a solution so that we work together to resolve it.” Related: Karachi residents take to the streets over 10-month water shortage On the directives of the chief minister, KWSB MD Asadullah Khan briefed the participants on the present situation. The official population of the city is 17 million and the daily requirement of water, at the rate of 45 gallons per person per day, was 918 MGD. “The total supply of water to the city is 580 MGD, of which 480 MGD water comes from Dhabeji and 100 MGD from Gharo,” he said. Naqvi said that the KWSB would have to reduce losses of 174 MGD. Stressing transparency and governance in the water board, he suggested that the government should start recycling the already used water and provide it to the industry and other institutions. Khwaja Izhar said the solution lies in stopping water theft and suggested registration of FIRs against pilferers. Akhtar said that even if the K-IV project was completed, the water board would not be able to provide water to the people as the water distribution system is very defective and obsolete. Javed Bilwani and Zubair Motiwala of KCCI said as the people did not pay their water bills, therefore slabs for the use of water should be worked out so that financial position of the water board can be improved. The KCCI members complained that the lines, which were dedicated to industries, had been diverted to other places. Former Karachi mayor Kamal noted that in the entire 130-kilometer strip of the K-IV project, the most expensive work is of pumping the water. He said that water lines must be laid under every road being reconstructed under the Karachi package. Related: Karachi’s water woes worsen as Eid approaches Concluding the meeting, the chief minister announced the formation of a committee, comprising one representative from each group, to control water leakages, losses, and theft, and improve the distribution system for the short term. He said the committee would be notified by the local government. He said that he was negotiating with HUBCO for procuring 1300MW power plant which would be entirely dedicated to Karachi. “It would resolve the energy shortage of the city.” As far as the water is concerned, Shah said, he was also working with HUBCO to install a desalination plant of 1200 MGD for Karachi. He said that he would speak to the prime minister about K-IV and desalination projects from Hub, during the latter’s visit to the metropolis on July 12. The chief minister said if Hub power plant was dedicated to Karachi, there would be no need to establish separate transmission lines. Karachi still crying for help four days after rain disaster

Karachi residents began cleaning ruined homes and businesses after catastrophic flooding sent rivers of filthy water cascading through the country's financial and commercial hub, even as authorities' efforts to mitigate the crisis-like situation seemed not enough. Four days after record-breaking rainfall wreaked havoc on the city, parts of it remained waterlogged and without power. Frustrated by the lack of action by departments concerned, residents of DHA and Clifton gathered outside the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) office to protest against the post-rain situation in the two localities.

The 2020 Karachi floods caused due to heavy rain and killed at least 41 people. Pakistan experiences monsoon during July and August, but has never experienced such heavy rainfall since records began.

The rainfall for a single day that totaled as much as 345 mm rivaled that of a recorded rainfall of 298.4 in 1984. Since the city started keeping meteorological records in 1931, this is considered the worst flooding Karachi has suffered in its history As of August 28, 2020, 760 mm of rainfall was recorded in a single week that forced the authorities to employ boats to rescue people stranded in the streets across the city. Fallen power lines, out of service cell phone towers, and widespread fuel shortages due to heavy reliance on alternative power sources created a vicious mix of miseries for the estimated 15 million residents of the city.

The local settlements have great concerns and expressed with sorrow that state must listen our grievances and ensure the availability of water which is our prime and first priority need. The waterborne diseases such as; Diarrhea, Typhoid, Cholera, Dysentery, Salmonella and Skin Infection are found most prevalent in children, women and elderly persons due to stagnant water surrounded by the settlements. Even though, local inhabitants are compelled to use saline water for drinking and cooking purpose which is unfit for human consumption and could lead to common health crisis. The people of the area are severely malnourished by inability to grow food due to unavailable fresh water. With such a scenario, Pakistan is far from achieving its adopted Sustainable Development Goal number six which promises access to safe, affordable and available drinking water for all by the year 2030. The agriculture sector is considered as a backbone of the country’s economy has been completely destroyed due to unavailability of fresh water and intrusion of sea in the whole deltaic region. Even the cultivated land has been converted into water logging and saline land. The farmers of Indus delta sadly expressed that their lands are unable to further cultivate any crop. Sindh requires a minimum environmental flow of water to maintain the proper functioning and health of its water bodies such as the Indus Delta mangroves and coastal wetlands. These mangroves and freshwater lakes have to be safeguarded from degradation and over-exploitation as they not only serve as fishery grounds but are vital to maintaining the natural balance of the water ecosystems [1-18].
