FAKTOR-FAKTOR BERLAKUNYA MASALAH PENCEMARAN ALAM SEKITAR DI NEGARA KITA

BAHAGIAN A (30 MARKAH)

Polemik pencemaran alam dalam Malaysia bukan isu yang baru. Malah, sejak zaman 1970an kerajaan sudah menyeru rakyat agar memberi kerjasama dalam usaha mengawal masalah pencemeran alam. Namun, tepuk sebelah tangan tidak akan berbunyi, seruan kerajaan dipandang remeh oleh masyarakat Malaysia dan akibatnya masalah ini masih tidak dapat diselesaikan sehingga hari ini. Demi menyelesaikan sebuah masalah kita haruslah memahami puncanya dahulu. Persoalannya, apakah punca-punca berlakunya pencemaran alam sekitar di negara kita?

Salah satu faktornya ialah wujudnya pengilang yang tidak prihatin terhadap impak kilangnya terhadap alam sekitar. Walaupun telah diggubaln undang-undang untuk mengurangkan pengeluaran sisa toksik daripada kilang, wujudnya pengilang yang tidak mempedulikannya. Pengilang tersebut bersikap lempar batu sembunyi tangan setelah melakukan kesalahan dan memberi pelbagai alasan yang remeh sekiranya ditanya pihak berkuasa. Saman yang diberi sebagai dendaan kepada pengilang pula tidak dipedulikannya kerana saman itu mampu dibayar olehnya. Akibatnya, kegiatan pengilangan yang mengancam alam sekitar tersebut diteruskan. Tuntasnya, terdapat segelintir pengilang yang sanggup menyalahi undang-undang Malaysia demi keuntungan sendiri.

Selain itu, kesedaran masyarakat terhadap polemik pencemaran alam sekitar tidak mencukupi. Wujudnya masyarakat Malaysia yang tidak menganggap bahawa penjagaan pembersihan alam sekitar bukan tanggungjawabnya tetapi merupakan tanggungjawab pihak berkuasa. Oleh itu, mereka membuang sampah di merata-rata tempat dengan tanggapan bahawa ada orang yang akan mengutipnya. Mereka tidak mampu memikirkan secara logik bahawa orang yang bekerja hanya beberapa sahaja, tetapi sampah yang perlu dikutip banyak. Kesannya, banyak sampah sarap tidak dikutip dan dibiarkan bertaburan sahaja. Pendek kata, aksi masyarakat membuang sampah, meskipun sedikat sahaja, lama-kelamaan akan berkumpul dan mengakibatkan pencemaran alam sekitar.

Seterusnya, sistem pembuangan sampah di sesetengah tempat di Malaysia tidak diuruskan dengan baik. Terdapat kes-kes di mana jadual pengutipan sampah tidak diikuti dengan ketat. Justeru itu, sampah yang dibuang diselongkar oleh kucing atau anjing menyebabkanya bersepah dan diharungi lalat. Akibatnya, sampah sarap menjadi bertimbun dan baunya yang busuk meloyakan penduduk. Tuntasnya, sistem pengutipan sampah di Malaysia yang tidak diuruskan dengan baik menyebabkan sampah sarap yang dibuang terbiar sahaja.

Semua pihak haruslah mengkaji punca-punca tersebut dan berusaha mencari penyelesaian polemik pencemaran alam sekitar. Masalah ini sekiranya tidak ditangani dengan bijaksana akan menjadi barah dalam pembangunan neagra kita. Oleh itu, sebelum nasi menjadi bubur, sebelum harapan menjadi kabur, marilah kita berganding bahu untuk mengatasi isu ini.

Prayer Rugs with Christian Symbolism or Church Use

1.  Christian Orthodox Prayer Rug CIRCA1800 - 1850 SIZE3.8 x 7.0 Ft. KPSI675 Double Turkish Knots

This Christian Orthodox Prayer rug was made in the first half of the 19th century (1800-1850) by Armenian weavers in Bursa, Turkey during the time of the Turkish Islamic Caliphate State (Turkish Empire).

The design of this rug dates back to the Roman Orthodox Christians in areas where there was a big Armenian presence. The rug was used as a prayer rug and usually placed on the floor of the church in front of the Madonna . The arch connotes the triumphant power of God and access to paradise. It is often surrounded by lillies which symbolize's God’s mercy on the Day of Judgment. The background color is red, representing the blood of Jesus. The oil lamp suspended in the center arch, is reminiscent of lamps hung in churches to indicate the presence of the Holy Sacrament at the altar.

2. Azerbaijan. Zakatala "christian" prayer rug, 140 x 100 cm., 4'8" x 3'4",ca. 1850-1870.

With bold graphics and good color harmony, it has a great tribal feel over it. The powerful designed yellow border reminds of Konya pieces, but also of some W-Chinese ones. There are old restorations in it and overall it has a high, soft pile. The aubergine christian cross in the top of the green mihrab is a very rare and odd accent. For a possible explanation i would like to refer to an article, 'Aspects of the contemporary ethnic situation in Azerbaijan', written by historician Aliaga Mamedov about the Ingiloi people, inhabitants of the Zakatala area and generally seen as descendants of the Albanian tribes once inhabiting the area. "It is known that after the Russians conquered the territory (1828), they forced Christianity on the region. However before 1834 only 32 Ingiloi had accepted Christianity. The tsarist government announced it would exempt those who accepted Christianity from paying tribute. Thus, tsarist Russia was able to achieve some success in converting the Zakataly district to Christianity. Villagers from the Ilisu section adopted Christianity between 1850 and 1856. They included Kakh, Alibeglo, Karagan, Kotuklu and Meshabash villages, and some of the residents of Shotavar. In 1858, the villages of Tasmalo, Zagiam, Lala-Pasha, Mirsaia and Engian adopted Christianity. However very soon afterwards many reverted to Islam, which survives to this day in the aforementioned villages."

The Saxon Lutheran Churches, parish storerooms and museums of Transylvania safeguard about four hundred Anatolian rugs, dating from the late-15th to the mid-18th century. They form the richest and best-preserved corpus of prayer-format rugs of Ottoman period outside Turkey.

Without attempting a résumé of the region’s complex history, Transylvania (like the other Romanian principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia) never came under direct Turkish occupation. Until 1699 it had the status of an autonomous Principality, maintaining the Christian religion and own administration but paying tribute to the Ottoman Porte. By contrast, following the Battle of Mohacs in 1526, part of Hungary was designated a Pashalik and was under Turkish occupation for over a century and a half.

Rugs came into the ownership of the Reformed Churches, mainly as pious donations from parishioners, benefactors or guilds. In the 16th century, with the coming of the Reformation, the number of figurative images inside the churches was drastically reduced as people followed the ten commandments earnestly: "You shall not make for yourself a carved image..., you shall not bow down to them or serve them". Frescoes were white-washed or destroyed, and the many sumptuous winged altar-pieces were removed maintaining exclusively the main altar piece. The recently converted parishioners thus perceived the church as a large, cold and empty space that needed warming up and a welcoming touch. Traces of the mural decoration were found during modern restorations in some Protestant Churches as for instance at Malâncrav.

In this situation the Oriental rugs, created in a world that was spiritually different from Christianity, found their place in the Reformed churches which were to become their main custodians. The removal from the commercial circuit and the fact that they were used to decorate the walls, the pews and the balconies but not on the floor was crucial for their conservation over the years. This is unique and quite extraordinary if we consider that the Ottoman Empire heavily dominated the region at that time. This fact confirms not only the traditional religious tolerance of Transylvanians but also the capacity of Oriental rugs to bridge different cultures.
