“Whaaaaaat’s up Kauk lovers!? It’s ya boy Kauker here from the brand, spankin’ new Kauk House! That’s right, y’all! I may be 17, but I’m a real life music producer and internet dude now, which means I can afford my own big ass house! Crazy, huh? Let’s take a little tour!”

Kauker’s new house was very ridiculous indeed. The mansion was much, much larger than he ever needed and the front had a full carnival, complete with a merry-go-round, food trucks, and a ferris wheel.

Living such a lavish lifestyle off the rapid success of his music and internet career seemed to quell the sadness from his parents’ break up. He’d moved out quickly, without telling his parents his plans. He sent them the details of his new life after he was all moved in, and unenrolled in school; he didn’t need it anymore. If worse came to worse, he’d at least get his GED, but he was more than sure he wouldn’t need it.

Besides, he now had an awesome house and an awesome girlfriend to share it with. “Don’t you think this is a little overkill?” Debbie asked when she first saw the pad. Kauker leaned into her and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “You really gonna stand here and tell me you don’t want me to put a waterslide out back?” Kauker asked. Debbie bit her lip. “Ok, ok, that sounds dope as hell,” she giggled.

The best part about Kauker’s new place was his music studio. It was huge, and all his. He could be as loud as he wanted, without getting in trouble. In fact, he could do whatever he wanted without getting in trouble!

He’d improved his production skills tenfold since he’d first blown up on Tiktok for his beats. Artists and rappers from all over the country were hitting him up, trying to get a Kauker Zarro original. It felt good, being so successful at his favorite hobby. Even though it seemed his family was falling apart, he was more than grateful that this part of his life was going well.

Having Debbie by his side was great too. She was a musician as well, and understood the music world just as well as he did. They spent all day together, discovering new portions of the house every few hours it seemed. As the evening came to a close, they decided to end the day with a game of pool. “You could move in with me here, you know?” Kauker said as Debbie lined herself up for her turn. “You trying to slip me up,” she said, not taking her eyes off the ball.

“Nope,” Kauker said, hand on his hip. “Totally serious. I’ve got like 40 bedrooms, if you want a few. Or you could share a bed with me.” “Ooh, what a tease,” Debbie said with a laugh. “I want to, really Kauker. But don’t think my parents would go for it. We can’t all be wildly successful influencer like you, ya know?”

Kauker scooped Debbie up in his arms and kissed her all over. “Ok, now you’re definitely trying to mess my game up,” Debbie laughed when they came up for air. “I’m just trying to get as many kisses in before you have to go home,” Kauker said with a smile.

25 Years of Maxis – Living the Simulated Dream - Game Informer

Author's Note: This article originally appeared in issue 236 of Game Informer. With the news of Maxis closing its doors in Emeryville, we wanted to post the feature to give you a look at happier days at the legendary studio. I conducted these interviews in September 2012 – prior to the release of SimCity and The Sims 4 – to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Maxis. Though recent developments may be missing from the conversation, I left the studio impressed by the dedication, passion, and creativity of the staff. Even if the Maxis brand persists in some altered form, the Emeryville location was the core of the studio, and I'm sad to see it go.

A game-specific language was critical to Wright’s first plans for the Sims universe. Sims had to communicate with one another, and with the player, in a way that was recognizable. But Wright was adamant about severing Simlish from the world’s existing languages. The vocabulary had to be absolutely blank, so that players could distill their own imagined conversations between their characters. “From the very beginning, it was about serving gameplay,” remembers Robi Kauker, who has been the Sims’ audio director since the game’s inception. “He wanted the idea of emotions to resonate with people, but he didn’t want the Sims to say anything that were meaningful so not to mess with the characters’ storytelling.”

Bobito and Marcella mark the start of fall with a dinner outside with their eldest son’s family. So for Saturday, he chooses some more wholesome fun and gathers his friends, and newly teenaged nephew, for an afternoon at SimBowl Lanes. The synchronized bowling pictures killed me, so I had to share them.

Era 1: The Sims 2 PC

My first major project at EA was The Sims 2 base game for the PC. At this time, Maxis was in their own location in downtown Walnut Creek, which had the happy result that I could take BART to work.

Pao Jitmakusol was famous for his HangBoy figures (right) that he drew on whiteboards in the middle of the night.
