The last time I went back to a movie theater to watch something again was in 1977. That was for the original Star Wars. Back then, before buying or renting movies was widespread, all sorts of people boasted of seeing Star Wars a dozen or 200 times in theaters. Great movie, sure, but twice was all I needed. The same is true that year for Smokey and the Bandit. I went two times.
Those were the days after a movie ended I felt sad. Such a great experience, and now it was over. Oh dear, what’s left in life. My friends and I dropped our candy wrappers on the sticky concrete floor then slowly ambled to the exit where a parent would pick us up.
True story: I thought the smooth, slanted theater floor had two benefits: It raised you up so you had a better chance to see over the head of the ten-year-old girl sitting in front of you. It also should let wrappers and cups roll easily down to the front row where an employee happily collected them between shows.
It never occurred to me why there were trash bins outside the doors. Or that cups with slanted sides wouldn’t roll straight. A few years later I briefly dated a girl who worked at a theater. She nicely told me the error of my littering ways. “Bob, knock it off!”
Last night I saw Top Gun: Maverick with my dad and my brother. Best movie I’ve seen since 1977. Definitely I was somber when the experience was over.
If you see Top Gun: Maverick, be sure you’ve first seen the 1986 original Top Gun. I liked the strong connections to the first one. In the current movie Tom Cruise even rode the original Kawasaki GPZ900 from the original for a bit.
This is certainly a movie to see a nice theater. When those jet engines lit up, you didn’t get seared by heat, but you felt the noise. It wouldn’t be the same streaming at home via Amazon Prime, unless you have a $50,000 home theater.
In 1977, when someone entered or exited during the show, I remember light from the lobby sometimes hitting the screen, especially during the day. Last night we walked through a maze to get from the door to our seats, which were on carpeted risers and not sticky. Tacko Fall could have been seated in front of me and I wouldn’t have known. I’ve matured since 1977 and put my empty beverage container in the trash bin when the movie was (sadly) over.
Modern theaters are swell. This one had a full bar. Hot food was available, and servers would even bring it to your seat in certain areas. The “no children” section was a nice idea too.
I am definitely going back one more time to see Top Gun: Maverick in a nice theater. Probably on a Tuesday, because it’s only $5 those days.

The Honda VF1000R – The Fastest Production Motorcycle In The World (In 1984)
The Honda VF1000R was the high performance member of the Honda VF1000 model family. All models had an advanced V4 998cc double overhead cam 16-valve, liquid-cooled engine but the VF1000R had a series of modifications to boost power and bring the bike closer to the Honda FWS1000 race bike which was competing in the Daytona 200 and AMA F1 class.
The most famous modification that was made to the V4 in the Honda VF1000R was the addition of gear driven camshafts. The VF1000 utilised chain driven cams, so a broad series of changes were required to create the VF1000R, particularly to top end.
The use of straight cut gears means that the VF1000R makes a very particular whining sound when running that’s typically loved by its owners, but well-meaning passersby have been known to stop and explain to the rider that their bike “doesn’t sound right”.
Honda first introduced the VF1000R in Europe in 1984 with 122 bhp at 10,000 rpm and 66 ft lbs of torque at 8,000 rpm. This was an impressive power figure for the era, however more impressive was this was the sheer volume of advanced engineering that Honda had squeezed into the model.
The 90º V4 had a 77.0 x 53.6mm bore x stroke with a compression ratio of 11:1. Four 36mm CV type carburettors were fitted, on the other side of the head there are four headers into two exhausts, which exit one per side at the rear.
The suspension on the VF1000R was notably advanced for a road bike in the 1980s, the front suspension featured air-assist 41mm tube diameter forks with 3-way adjustable rebound damping, TRAC (Torque Reactive Anti-Dive Control), a fork brace, and equaliser, a pre-cursor in many ways to the modern suspension used on many current superbikes. In the rear the monoshock suspension was a Pro-Link unit with 3 way remote adjustable rebound damping.
The braking system was similarly advanced for the time, with twin floating discs with dual piston calipers and sintered metal pads up front, and a ventilated disc with an opposed piston floating caliper and sintered metal pads in the rear.
Some magazine reviewers in the 1980s did criticise the bike for its very committed riding position, the foot pegs are rearsets and the adjustable clip-on handlebars do necessitate the rider leaning reasonably far forward. That said, compared to modern superbikes the riding position is standard if not a little more relaxed.
In the mid-1980s the Honda VF1000R claimed the “fastest production motorcycle in the world” title with a recorded top speed of 150 mph, a title previously held by the MV Agusta Monza which was later claimed by the Kawasaki GPz900.
Finding good examples of the VF1000R that haven’t been crashed or ridden hard by their former owners is getting harder with each passing year.
The 1985 model you see here is one of the cleanest examples we’ve seen for a while and it’s due to come up for sale with Mecum in January. If you’d like to read more about it or register to bid you can click here.

Channeling Top Gun: A GPZ900 hot rod from Italy
It’s been over thirty years since Tom Cruise blasted across the screen in an F14 Tomcat, in the cult classic, Top Gun. But who remembers the motorcycle he rode in the film? We do: it was a red and black Kawasaki GPZ900R.
Photographer Paolo Sandolfini wasn’t even born when Top Gun came out, but he’s a nut for everything 80s. So when he got his hands on a GPZ900R, the pop culture reference was too hard to resist.
Paolo bought the GPZ900R four years ago, after owning a GPZ750. Even though he had hated the 750, he somehow still wanted a GPZ. “I really wanted the Top Gun bike,” he explains, “because it looked really weird to me.”
Top Gun isn’t the GPZ900R’s only claim to fame. It was the first model in Kawasaki’s long-standing Ninja line, and was considered cutting edge when it hit showrooms. And with 115 hp from its liquid-cooled inline-four, it was good for a gnarly top speed of 154 mph.
Paolo managed to source a 1984-model GPZ900R, but it was in dire need of attention. Not only was it filthy, but the fairings were littered with dents and scratches. Paolo’s based in Parma, near Milan in Italy, and has an ex-race mechanic on speed dial. Between the two of them, they brought the old GPZ up to spec.
Anyone who’s stripped a faired motorcycle can attest to how much real estate there really is to work through. But the guys soldiered on, painstakingly repairing every last ding. They didn’t quite restore it to spec though—Paolo’s mixed in a few subtle tweaks.
You’ll notice that the integrated mirrors and turn signals are gone, and the screen’s been switched out for a smoked one from MRA. And the seat’s different too. Paolo sourced a solo NOS VTR saddle from Germany, had the upholstery redone in leather, and fitted it to the GPZ’s tail unit.
The bodywork was then sent off to an old timer, that specializes in painting race bikes. He shot it with the unmistakable Top Gun red and black, separated by hand-painted white striping. (Thankfully, Paolo opted not to paste the bike with decals, like the movie’s version.)
This GPZ900R is more than just a retro-fabulous re-skin though. Paolo’s also seen to a few choice performance upgrades, to make sure it goes as good as it looks.
He’s upgraded the cams, switched all the cooling hoses to silicone ones, and installed a set of Keihin FCR carbs with velocity stacks. The exhaust is a brawny four-into-one system from Devil. And even though part of the motor’s tucked away behind that chunky fairing, it’s been treated to a supreme clean-up job.
As for the running gear, Paolo left the front suspension alone—but upgraded the rear with a new Bitubo shock. The brakes are NOS Brembo units, and the tires are an Avon Roadrider out front, and a 150-wide Bridgestone Battlax out back (a bump up from the original 130).
There’s also just the right amount of originality on Paolo’s GPZ to keep the nostalgia levels high. The instruments and switches are stock, but he’s installed a Domino throttle and fresh Renthal grips.
We applaud his restraint. This GPZ is a great nod to the source material, with enough variation to keep it exciting.
It’s also clean enough to eat off, which had us convinced it never gets ridden. As it turns out, we were wrong.
“I don’t like to ride it like an historical bike,” Paolo assures us. “I treat her as a modern bike, revving and braking hard.”
“That’s why I love this bike, because it’s really fast and everyone turns around to watch you!”
Let’s be honest: who else feels like cranking Kenny Loggins all the way up, and punching the sky while riding off into the sunset?
