here's your climactic scene; there's your soiled seat; i got nuthin' to follow it up, really, so here's some more cute kids.
told from the perspective of three orphaned children, polish director dorota kedzierzawska's tomorrow will be better (jutro bedjie lepiej) has a distinctly limited point-of-view. without a real 'in' to the story and quite frustratingly lacking an 'out', all we are given is that these cuddly russian deviants are moving forever southwards, to the polish border, where things will invariably be better. think of it kinda like viggo and kodi moving west in john hillcoat's the road – no why, no how, just west – only without the kid shooting bit.
and given that's just about it, kedzierzawska has got to do something to fill out her 118 minutes. she mostly succeeds, with tangential little adventures, some nice cinematography and a 6-year old [oleg ryba] that'll charm the teeth off you: chain-smoking, cussing, and swaggerin' up a storm, little teddy bear in breast pocket should he need to pull the win-'em-over-with-endearment king-hit. in a film that finds much levity, the one, stunningly executed scene of unbearable suspense strikes much too early (about 2/3 in), while the much slower last act leaves us with more a ponderance on an unwritten future than an ending: a pause, not a climax.
