i like DL mainly for Laito and Yui's character; Laito's character being so interesting and complex but MAN it's a total letdown tonally and not to mention the massive lore discrepancies like what you're saying

also a little correction; the drama cd series were released as a kinda "advertisement" to the games when they eventually came out if im not mistaken--it was like a little "teaser" so it wasn't like they didn't plan out the first game beforehand, but the lore absoluuutely got more complicated and the writing got kinda sloppy with some characters or they just accidentally retconned things

i think their take on vampires being super sadistic and dark is a really cool thing that we don't really see in media that much (from what ive seen? at least to this detail); like it's either "emo baby boy" or "total monster" and i like that in between a whole lot. The Case Study of Vanitas *kind of* does this??? Their take on vampires is different but one I love a whole lot.

i know its supposed to be fanservicey and for people who are into S&M (don't even get me started how this game was advertised to minors/teens like ik it's not explicitly sexual but goddamn it tows the fuckin line); like I'm transparent how I'm into that and it at least does it's job as a fanservice game well, but man,,, i stayed for the cool lore/writing/concepts they basically cockteased us over the past 10+ years QvQ not that im not personally into the stuff that's in the game, but i wouldnt nearly be as interested in it if there wasn't super cool concepts and a character that has more layers than an Alabama sweet onion

like it's neat that Carnelian Blood (which takes place in the same universe; teased by the manga) is in DL's universe and it serves to expand the lore in a very different fanservicey avenue, and Young Blood was amazing, but gah!!!! it's weird how the game's split up into fanservice chapters and then the cool lore ones lmfao

tldr i wish it was just a psychological horror and then people could just get horn knee over the characters separately cuz that would happen regardless

I like Yui, but I'm not fond of DL. I would've been fine with it if it stuck to being a psychological horror, but it's based on a Drama CD series that's non-consentual S&M play, and those two ideas mix about as well as oil in water. This causes the intended reaction for the audience to feel bad for Yui's situation, and, to some extent, the love interests, but to also be aroused by the love interests abusing Yui, which creates an odd tone throughout the games, especially when they get more plot-focused.
