Jo'jaska's Diary: 3rd of Frostfall

It is done. The Heart of Lorkhaj is banished, Dagoth Ur is defeated, and the skies above Red Mountain are clear for the first time in a very long time. Centuries, perhaps.

It was not as difficult as Jo'jaska expected. The Cliff Racers were as much a nuisance as ever, but he has grown strong these past weeks. The sharmat's servants were dispatched with little difficulty, and Vivec's plan worked just as promised. The day is saved, the Sixth House has fallen, and Azurah even appeared to offer khajiit a ring and her congratulations.

Though this one is still thinking about something that Dagoth Ur said to him before they fought. He asked Jo'jaska if Jo'jaska truly believed himself to be Nerevar reborn. It gave this one pause. Jo'jaska had assumed that he must have been, for he fit the prophecy and Azurah told him that he was. But Azurah is the Prince of prophecy, and the Mother of All Khajiit is as tricksy as her children. Perhaps she simply guided Jo'jaska down the path to this moment, to avenge her champion Nerevar and cast down the living gods who usurped her. Vivec thought her an enemy, at least, and with the Heart gone the Tribunal's power will fade as well.

Khajiit supposes that it does not matter. He is alive, and Dagoth Ur is not. The Tribunal may go to Oblivion for all he cares.

There is still much to do. There are many he can help, much work to do with the guilds, and he still means to speak to Yagrum Bagarn in Tel Fyr about what happened to the Dwemer.

For now though, this one will rest. He feels that he has earned it.

(In the back pages of seemingly random journals throughout Tamriel and far, far beyond, ink begins to appear, flowing in strokes to form the words of a diary entry.) Entry One. Sundas, 17th Last Seed, 4E201. Khajiit finally made landing in Skyrim. I was getting rather sick of the rocking of that ship, although now that I have had time to steady myself this one may have been more afflicted by homesickness than seasickness... A whole month has passed since Morkhaj-ko set off from the crumbling ruins of her home town... She will not put its name to paper, that is still too painful for me... Enough of that. I first set foot at the docks of Windhelm, a city that seems to despise my homeland, judging from the treatment of its Dunmer residents... Segregated to a single alleyway! Ziss! This one stopped for a drink at a “New Gnisis Cornerclub”, a poor tribute to its namesake and the cornerclubs back home. And of course those Nord N’wahs called out “are you a cat or a damn elf?” and the like as I passed through on my way to the front gates. Not even a chance to get some warmth into this one’s fur before I was thrust back into the freezing cold of Skyrim’s north... I hired a carriage driver to take me to a warmer city closer to the southern border, the capital of Whiterun hold, and write as I ride. May Jone and Jode guide me to warm sands, and Boethia keep me safe.

Dufrey Diaries Chapter 28

Lucline, Rasina,and Tira lead Abee into the manor. Lucline did a Psjiic projection and soon Lobamog, Talsma, and Vasfer arrived.

“Start from the beginning, Abee.” Lucline urged. Her sister took a swig of sparkling wine to steady herself.

”My friend is Elidice, Countess of Camlorn. Lately she has been sending me letters asking me to visit as soon as I can. I’ve been busy with my duties and have been putting her off but her letters have become more and more insistent lately that I come with all haste. Then this morning, a courier arrived from her court telling me that she has disappeared. I just don’t know what to do, Lucline.”

Lucline pursed her lips and looked over at her friends. They were all nervous, a noble didn’t just disappear into thin air. A commoner might, but nobility was noticed when they vanished.

Rasina coughed. “The others and I can go to check on Camlorn. Lucline, I think you should stay here. I know your still able to act normally, but I would rather not put you in potential danger when your carrying our child.”

Lucline’s hand went down to caress her belly. “I don’t like it, but I understand. Still, I’ll prepare potions for each of you when you go.”

Lobamog coughed. “If we’re going, I better go and tell my partner. I’ll be back in an hour, ready to depart.” Abee gave their Orc friend a smile. Lucline smiled as well, she was glad her sibling was getting on with her friends. “Talsma, do you need to go and say good bye to my brother?”

The female Khajiit looked away from her. “This one will be fine. Your brother understands you cannot tie down a Khajiit.”

Vasfer laughed. “Her handsome knight happens to be in Camlorn this week on a mission.”

Talsma reached over and pulled on his tai;. “You have a big mouth, litter mate.”

“Ow, that hurts.” Vasfer tucked in his tail to his body and gave his sister an afronted look. The others chuckled at the banter of the siblings. “Get your gear ready.” Rasina said. “We will depart in two hours.” Abee held up a hand. “Would you take my friend and bodyguard as well? Berhil Ivylock has been to Camlorn several times with me and knows the city well. None of you have been there before.”

Lobamog looked at Lucline. “Do you know this Bosmer?” She nodded in response. “Yes, a good friend to all three of us siblings. She worked as a mercenary when we were little. Our parents hired her to protect Abee when she started getting explorative. She’s good with a bow and dual daggers. She can read the land like a book and track like a fiend.”

Rasina nodded. “The more the merrier. See you all soon.” *Elder-Scrolls*

Lucline and Tira rushed around and handed each of them their potions while they checked gear and loaded supplies into the new carriage, she had purchased for the Kahjiiti siblings. Vasfer is standing ready to pull as they finished. A Bosmeri woman came from the crowd, bow on her back and daggers on each hip. She wore stylized leather from neck to ankles. The garment was figure hugging and Lucline could not help but notice what a figure it was. She had her long brown hair braided down her left shoulder and the braid went all the way past her waist. Her elven eyes were bright green and slitted like a cat’s. Her feet were bare and like the rest of her skin was tanned from the sun kissing it for so long. She was tall for her people, easily matching Abee and Lucline in height. She had no pack or bedroll, but Berhil didn’t need such things. She could track a deer for miles and secure the kill. She never lacked for food or materials. She never consumed plants or using anything that had come from a plant. Even her bow was made by special Bosmeri tradition and made from animal parts.

“Thank you for letting me come. Elidice is a friend to me as well. Lady Lucline, I swear I’ll bring your wife and friends home safe.” “I appreciate your confidence, Berhil, these four should not be underestimated themselves. Talsma is a crack shot with her crossbow and her brother Vasfer has the strength of three men and the weight of four. Lobamog is a master of Illusion magic and its applications in combat. My wife is a Reguard Ansei, like the sword-singers of Yokuda.  I think you’ll find each a worthy ally.”

The elf lowered her head. “I am sorry, I meant no disrespect. I am Berhil Ivylock, I have been a Merc and a Ranger for over a hundred years. I sometimes forget those with shorter lifespans can hope to match my experience. I hope you will accept me into your little band of adventurers.”

Lobamog smiled. “No offense taken, at least by me. I recall hearing stories of your exploits when I was just a tyke in my Stronghold. Is it true you once slew a giant bear?” Berhil laughed, it sounded like music to Lucline’s ears. “Oh yes. But it wasn’t just any old giant bear. It was Grapplepaw, the largest bear seen in Wrothgar since the second era. And to make matters worse, it had raided a skooma den earlier that day so it was all drugged up and couldn’t feel pain. Took me five hours to finally bring it down, with my very last arrow. I made the hilts for these new daggers from the bones of just one of his massive paws.”

Lucline shuddered. Giant bears she could imagine. But ones strung out on Skooma? No thank you, she would have happily kept such an image from her brain.

Berhil stepped over to Abee and kissed her deeply. “I’ll be back soon, my little rosebud.” Abee blushed deeply and hid her face in Berhil’s hair for a moment. “Hurry back to me, my hunter.”

Berhil winked and sprung up into the carriage with one fluid movement and the wagon was off for Camlorn.

“So…” Tira looked up at Abee with a knowing look. “She’s your ‘bodyguard’?”

Abee hid her face in her hands. “Stop…”

Lucline grinned and joined in. “I’m sure she guards you well all through the long winter nights.” Abee was wailing. “Stop! Please!” Lucline wrapped her arm around her embarrassed sister. “Why were you keeping it secret? Did you think I would disapprove? Me, after I married a Redguard woman?”

“No,” Abee admitted. “We were going to tell you guys but between getting ready for the wedding and you expecting a baby, we thought the time wasn’t right. And she was my bodyguard at first, thank you very much. Just when I became an adult, well she is very pretty.”

Lucline nodded. “She is. Are you happy, Abee?” Abee nodded eagerly. “Very happy, Lucline.” “Then you two have my blessing, for what that is worth. I expect to meet her as your partner the next time she’s in town though, for dinner. I might just give her a bit of a hard time, just on principle.”

“I’ll practice my teasing.” Tira winked and climbed into Lucline’s arms. “Mama, I’m hungry.” “You’re always hungry, my darling. Let’s see what we can rustle up for you. Join us, Abee?” Her sister gratefully joined her. “I know I suggested she come, but I do worry about her. Even though she’s the most experienced adventurer in the world.”  

“You never stop worrying for the ones you love.” Lucline remarked as she opened the door to their home. “That’s how you know you love them.”

Diary of Lokra Gra-Galash

24th of Last Seed, 4E 201

After arriving in Skyrim with little more than enough Septims to sustain myself, the Spells my unconventional education had allowed me to become practised in, and, reassuringly, the blessing of my mothers, I have finally been able to get ahold of a decent replacement for the diary lost to the canal in my first day on Riften.

I am still unsure whom exactly I intend to read this, besides me, in the long run, but it'll at least ensure I don't forget any important details when I write my letters home to Bravil.

There is, thankfully, not much to summarise of the last few weeks spent preparing to make the journey to Winterhold.

Riften reminded me of Bravil, and I hated it at once. The people are either unpleasant or understandably depressed by the unpleasantness surrounding them. The wolves found prowling in the countryside were cheerier company.

Corruption is worn openly like a virtue in this place as eagerly as the Nibenean Cyrods proudly delight in displaying their intricate tattoos. I made few friends, and after only a day or two I was more than eager to move on.

The only true highlight of my time scrounging for meagre employment there was meeting Inigo.

He is certainly eccentric, but he knows his way around Skyrim better than I, and his good humour has kept me going when my dismal surroundings have otherwise encouraged me to run back to Bravil like the inexperienced young girl I still feel myself to be in many ways. (for some inexplicable reason he even likes the weather).

The reasons for our meeting are convoluted and too great to summarise in the time I have tonight, but I am grateful for his friendship. Without him, I think I'd be dead, and not simply from the weather.

I would honestly rather not dwell too much on the work that has kept me fed, clothed, and supplied so far. I had hoped to find quiet, steady work in Riften, but this insane civil war has forced me to find coin elsewhere.

Bounties, mainly. This land has no shortage of bounties.

I take no pride in admitting that I have ended lives. It is unpleasant enough to cut short the unique potential of a person, but the way my magic ends lives is

I truly hope I will stop remembering the smell so much. Please

We are staying at Ivarstead for now, a cheerier town than the others I have seen. It feels strangely removed from the misery crowding the rest of this land, and the people have been welcoming enough to a foreign Orsimer and a Khajiit wanderer among them. I hope Winterhold feels the same way.

We should reach Windhelm soon once we get started tomorrow. I will hopefully have better news to report then. I hope.

Feels like Fall

Dear Diary,

Lydia and me wiped out a bandit camp. Lydia is my house... what's it carled again? Anyway, she's there and can carry things. and fight. So we got the bounty.

I also forged some stuff at Adrinni's (?) forge. She's the daughter of that Aventshi adviser guy for Boss Gruffballs. I'm getting pretty good at making things :) Wonder what the old folks back home in Elsweyr would think..

Anyway, I also beat up a bard. And then some other strong gal in the tavern. She even gave me money for it!

And then I had almost enough money. I earned the rest by chopping wood and selling it to Woolda. She's old and wants to sell her tavern to the woman I beat the bard up for.

Yes, yes, I'm doing fine, really!

I got a house now.

Being almost executed by the Imperials, and then eaten by a dragon was the best thing that could ever have happened to me!

There's a bed just for me and it's huge!

The rest is empty and dusty. The rest of the house that is. But the adviser guy can provide furnishings and stuff. For coins of course.

I've heard of another bandit camp already, gonna hike out tomorrow, with Lydia, probably. Or that woman from the tavern. But today I'm gonna relax and look at the pretty flowers around my house.

Jo'jaska's Diary: 2nd of Frostfall

This one has much to think about. The Archcanon of the Temple was not the one Jo'jaska needed to speak to, just the messenger. The Archcanon gave this one access to see the dunmer god-king Vivec. Vivec was strange. He spoke in riddles and philosophy, metaphysics that Jo'jaska barely understood. Khajiit would be interested to learn more of them when his duty is done.

Khajiit is currently resting in an inn at the Ghostgate, studying the notes he was given. The plan to slay a mad living god is simpler than he might have thought. He just needs to find a pair of artifacts, wear the gauntlet given to him by Vivec, and strike the source of Dagoth Ur's power in a certain simple pattern. Jo'jaska does not think that he would use it even if he could. Godhood is not Jo'jaska's to claim, and it sounds to him like a horribly lonely existence.

It is strange to think that it is not even two months since Jo'jaska was shipwrecked on Morrowind. It has been so little time since he first crept into that tomb, helping that dunmer woman fight the tomb's guardians for the promise of some supplies. And now here he is, with a grand destiny and plans to kill a living god. He wonders how that woman is doing.

This one wonders what he will do when this is over, when he has fulfilled his destiny. It won't be much longer. Only a day or two more, perhaps.

Maybe a bit of an odd question here: How good is people's capacity to remember on Tamriel? By that I mean. For a normal, basic human, 30y is.. a lot of time passed. And trying to remember something learnt even 10y before is difficult. But so many races (and individuals) live so much longer than that. So, do longer-lived races have a better capacity to remember? What about people born to races with a "normal" lifespan but who ended up living way longer? Or do they have to take notes to make sure they don't forget things that happened 100y ago?

In all honesty, this has never been much of a concern of mine, so I never really researched it.

It is well known that the Altmer have something akin to eidetic memory, because those bastards are very smug about it and usually rub it into your face whenever they can. Basically other races (humans at least) when they recall past events, they recall a memory, and then they recall the recalling of that memory, and then the recalling of the recalling of the memory, and that’s the way our memories slowly shift over time. Altmer always recall the source memory as they had lived through it, and they are unable to forget. Whether this applies to to other elves (and Orcs) I have no idea. Possibly not.

People who have somehow extended their lifespan are usually mages and they have added to their years via magic. Magic scholarship is in a nutshell one big memory training, so here memory is often not an issue. Additionally a lot of mages write notes and diaries, either to have a back-up (accidental magic-induced amnesia is fairly common incident) or to pass their findings to apprentices or further generations. As my old arcanophysics lecturer used to say: “It’s not a science if you don’t jot that shit down.”

My great-great uncle twice removed Kima - well his name is actually Kimakurr-jo, but we kids have never called him that and I am not about to start now -  is some 700 years old and a Khajiit and a vampire and a lich. His memory is rather selective; historical events and years completely elude him, he sometimes gets the names of his past wives mixed up, but without a fail he names trading cards by year and edition of print and reprint. I have a theory that he would remember other things if he could be bothered about them, too.

Another man that I know has obtained semi-immortality through a magical artifact, but he’s been struggling to recall anything that happened more than 40-50 years ago ever since. There were things that had greatly impressed him a century ago and he remembers them even now, but the last time I spoke to him he had admitted the memories are rather hazy and harder to catch than an eel. It doesn’t seem to be a problem for him as long as he doesn’t speak to me, as we are about the same age and I’ve known him since Aureata died...

I’m tempted to start a new game in Skyrim or Oblivion.

Xbox 360 vanilla version - so no cool mods and no Inigo -, no main quest.

I’m going to roleplay my D&D halforc death paladin/grave cleric of Pelor and Wee Jas, so the run will be a pilgrimage (especially if I’m going to play the Knight of the Nine DLC), either expiatory or to become a paladin/cleric.

I’ll probably set some restrictions (I always end up with the archer thief if I don’t), so these are the options: 

TO DO

warrior build, sword+shield/two-hand weapons and heavy armor

using restoration/mysticism/alteration spells

level up at 25 at least

join the Imperials in Skyrim

eat and drink

keep few items in the inventory (most of the carried weight will be the equipped items and healing potions)

destroy the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim

visit all the temples and altars dedicated to the Nine Divines

walk or travel on a wagon

help all the NPCs in need

if there’s a city or a village nearby, always sleep inside an inn, temple or guild; if there’s only an inn and the paladin doesn’t have enough money to sleep there, she won’t sleep at all (it builds discipline I guess lol)

If I’m going to do this I also want to make a sideblog - my paladin’s travel diary, with stories (maybe drawings? I can’t draw and they will be very bad) and everything she may find interesting during her pilgrimage. I wanted to do this years ago for my khajiit dragonborn, maybe I can start this project now.
