I think part of the reason Thai BLs can stay in the mid-budget movie area is because of the way they are funded - Product Placement. If a studio was the only one or one of very few shimming up the money then they'd want to make the best returns of their investment. An understandable business strategy. But because Thai BLs are not solely reliant on major investment from a few parties they can take risks with their content, they can make mistakes, they don't have to be edited to perfection, which often leads to making the most inoffensive thing possible.

So thank product placement that we can have 12 - 15 episode shows with kink, humor, unconventional ideas and absolutely bonkers chemistry.

so, i saw that poll going around asking who the ‘most toxic couple’ in kinnporsche was, and so many people in the notes were talking about kinn & porsche’s first time in the hotel bathroom with far more sinister language than vegas & pete’s first time in the safe house and i was just like. you know vegas & pete’s first time was super fucked up consent-wise, right? just because vegas tells pete (in an effort to goad him into action, might i add) that “it’s not fun if you don’t give in,” doesn’t mean their first time existed on a level playing field. the insane power dynamics between an abductor and abductee is not something to be pushed aside and written over. adventures in stockholm, anyone?

also, why are y’all pretending that vegas is someone who respects consent, anyways? like, is it simply because of that one line? what about his actions? because he said something similar to porsche in episode four (“a guy like me doesn’t like to force anyone”) while he was literally sexually assaulting him. vegas roofied porsche and touched him without his consent—kissing/sucking his neck in order to “leave a mark” for kinn to find—and we know vegas was going to do more because after porsche headbutts him (something he does not do to kinn later on, by the way), we see vegas getting angry and forcefully flipping porsche over on the bed before his guards warn him that kinn has been alerted and is on his way. i mean, the sexual implications of shoving porsche onto his front and then straddling him are really quite clear.

he even sexually assaults pete in the minor family’s torture room after electrocuting pete’s testicles and beating him with a baseball bat—he licks pete’s neck and touches his naked chest and ass despite pete’s protests. and this was done deliberately as part of the psychological and physical torture. why are y’all trying to convince yourselves he’s this paragon of virtue? like you’re getting rid of the most interesting part of vegas & pete’s relationship dynamic. they’re fucked up! it’s intriguing! you’re allowed to enjoy the fact that they’re fucked up! like, that’s what makes the trajectory of their story so interesting. stop turning them into something that they’re not, especially in an attempt to turn kinn & porsche’s relationship into something that it’s not.

all in all, both situations (kinn & porsche’s first time + vegas & pete’s first time) deal with varying levels of dubious consent. like, this is a show about the fucking mafia. all of the characters are morally gray. yes, they’re our blorbos, but they’re literal murderers. you can’t just accept one fucked up aspect of their lives while denouncing another. and pretending that vegas holds the moral high ground over kinn when it comes to his romantic and sexual encounters is fucking delusional. and i haven’t even mentioned his sexual/emotional manipulation of tawan yet (and i’m not going to because i don’t give a shit about tawan lmao, fuck tawan. but the point still stands!)

Khun Vegas stays quiet for a while after Nop finishes, his eyelids fluttering and the tense line of his shoulders lowering, slumping down and inward, the alpha’s usually proud posture curling in on himself. Small. Weak. Vulnerable… hurt. To the very core.  “Thank you, Nop. You can go now.” The alpha’s voice sounds thick, watery – clicking with emotion too grand to be only an effect of a simple nightmare. Nop can’t help himself as he takes a step— “Khun—” “Don’t.”  The order freezes Nop in place – not for its force, but how quiet it is. Out.” Nop’s hands curl into fists at his sides, fear coiling around his guts, his lungs, his pounding heart, but still, he bows and doesn’t let it show.  “I’ll be just outside,” he says, because he has to, because he needs his alpha to know he’ll be there, that there’s no way he’s getting off his shift now. The only acknowledgment he gets is a nod, short and barely visible, but Nop doesn’t dare to linger anymore. He turns to leave and braces himself against the pure, unadulterated wave of grief that damn near explodes from behind his back, rapidly filling the air with the force and pull of a tsunami, so suddenly thick and potent his own knees just about buckle. Nop doesn’t allows himself to turn around though, not when he hears the rustle of the man collapsing in on himself, and not when the impossible intensity of the sheer pain in the air clogs up his senses – the grief so abrupt and so all-encompassing it only reminds him of one thing, of when he lost his— Instead, Nop sets his jaw and hurries to the door, not quick enough to avoid catching the first notes of a the most wrecked, mournful whine he’s ever heard in his entire life.  His heart bleeds all over his guts as he nearly slams the door shut, barely fast enough for the sound of his alpha’s grief to not carry down the corridor. Not fast enough to spare the other guard stationed at Khun Vegas’ door the same mercy, though.  Somewhat young for the alpha’s detail, but incredibly hardworking and loyal, Bold looks at him with wide, alarmed eyes, and Nop [...].

I find myself not knowing what BL to watch lol. See I've got a whole list but like something in my brain won't let me pick easily.

I did recently watch Bad Buddy (and OMG thank you do much to the people who had me put it on my list to begin with) and I'm in the process of watching Bed Friends and Love Syndrome as they air. Yeah I know the last one is toxic but it oddly has me hooked anyway.

I wanted to know thought with older shows and newer shows what your top 5 or even top 10 was. Like maybe it would help be choose easier. I'm mainly looking for a title that will just grab my attention so I know where to start. I'm going to tag the ones I've for sure watched.

My only requirements are I can't do sad endings. I mean I can sort of but I prefer happy.

Nothing against the girlies but for once I would like to see guys gushing over the lead's romance. and not side character guys, one off guest character type guys. Guys deserve to gush over romance too.

There was a surprising amount of sex in Be Mine Superstar! I really wasn’t expecting it…. Similarly, Love Syndrome had a LOT less sex than I was promised by the trailer…

Are there any BLs that had either many more or many less NC scenes than you were expecting before you started watching them?

Interesting question. So far, not that many Thai BLs. But I think that's just because I pay attention to the pairs and the actors in Thai stuff, and you sort of get a feel for what they will (and won't) take on. So in your examples: I know JaFirst did high heat so I expected the producers to lean into that advantage as part of BMSS because, frankly, it didn't have much else going for it.

I haven't watched Love Syndrome III yet but knowing Frank I wouldn't expect it to go super high heat in terms of actual physical contact.

I guess the ones that have surprised me are mostly out of Thailand are pulps that I knew nothing about going in. Let me see...

Thai BL that ended up being way hornier/better than I expected

Secret Crush On You - such a weird show but BillySeng brought IT, whatever IT is, they got it.

Love in Translation - yeah, what happened in that sauce isle boys? Very saucy. Whatever pun, more please.

2 Moons 3 - about on par with ForthBeam from 2 Moons 2 but nothing else in the previous 2 series would lead one to expect the horny we got in this show on the main.

Second Chance - yeah it was a throw away pulp and this studio is hit or miss on chemistry but it had one of the best kisses of its year.

Big Dragon - I don't know what I expected form the trailers, but it wasn't as good as it turned out to be. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the show is naff, but the chemistry/heat levels are scorching.

Ghost Host, Ghost House - generally the horror stuff doesn't do chemistry well, but these two have some of the best chemistry EVER put into a pulp. I really hope we see more of them.

KinnPorsche - It's no secret I'm not as wild about this show as most, but I did think the VegasPete stuff was unexpectedly killer in all ways.

Oh My Sunshine Night - yeah it was exactly what one expects from OhmFluke but THE SIDES!!!! I mean... WHAT? I'm not mad, just pleasantly surprised.

TharnType - Okay but remember at the time what we'd had from Mame was LBC (relatively low heat) and other Thai stuff I was familiar with at the time was Make It Right, Love Sick, SOTUS, and UWMA. TT was way higher heat that I'd seen from Thailand before. And then...

Why R U? - ZeeSaint's "away trip to the beach" full on sex scenes plus repping for verse was just crazy at the time. Especially since Saint played Pete in LBC before this and Zee was new to BL. Add that to the very odd and disjointed (and miss-matched) SaifahZon counter story and WRU? was this insane all over the place viewing experience, including the heat levels. There was this "what will they do next?" kind of tension over the production. Not the story (because who was following that?) but the PRODUCTION. At the time, it was welcome, but truly bonkers. What a way to drive narrative tension... pure high heat chaos.

Thai BLs where chemistry failed meet my (relatively low) expectations

My Ride - honestly, if they had just gotten the kiss right this might even have earned a 10/10 from me

Unforgotten Night - ugh

Bite Me - double ugh

Friend Forever - I know I'm the only person who watched this but why could we not have gotten ONE kiss from the leads?

Nitman - studies have since shown us it is entirely not Noh's fault... see Oh My Sunshine Night

Wedding Plan - the leads were fine, but Mame usually fails me in every way except chemistry, so "fine" is not up to her usual standards. Those standards being predominantly "they hawt together" and nothing else. There wasn't even a side dish couple to pick up the slack noodle... so to speak.

Korean BL

For most of 2022 I was consistently getting surprised by Korean BL's chemsitry when it was good but now I've settled into half expecting it yet still being delighted when it happens and is well done.

I do think Semantic Error was a bit of a seed change for them.

The problem is, now we know they can do it, we are starting to get pissed when it's bad or entirely absent.

Taiwanese BL

Taiwan is the opposite of Korea.

I expect good chemistry and almost always always get it. I struggle to think of a time when they've disappointed me (in this arena). Maybe a few? But I tend to cut Taiwan more slack than other countries because they have so few BLs and they are generally so consistent. If they falter at all, at least the side couple will pick up the slack.

Japanese BL

I have no expectations of Japan. Life as a BL fan is a lot easier that way.
