"twentysomething indie devs didn't even experience games before gamecube" honestly I don't believe that at all. Maybe if u had a ton of money to buy a ton of new games. I was born 2001 and grew up playing handed down N64 and NES games. I got a GBA when I was young and that involved buying bootleg carts of Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 3, and DKC2. I played (and failed at) Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 and Golden Axe on someone else's Genesis in elementary school. Kirby Superstar Ultra was my favorite DS game. When I started to get older I learned how to use emulators and played a ton of old stuff. It's weird to me to act like people's love for an era (or set of eras) of games is disingenuous just because they weren't around on release day. Maybe prevalence of pixel graphics in indie scenes isn't because of "manufactured nostalgia" or being hipster, maybe it's bc pixel art is evergreen and looks good and fucking rules.

The Overview of Mirror World
A 'pocket dimension' of sorts, it's unknown how and why it exists, but it has existed for quite some time.
The Mirror World in this AU, unlike most interpretations, is smaller and less contrived. The Mirror World reflects Dreamland and its surroundings AND ONLY Dreamland and its surroundings, and thus only denizens of Dreamland and its surrounding areas really exist there. Though, they seem to only 'copy' the 'certain important people' rather than everyone in it, which makes it very weird. So they have their own Taranza (Dark Taranza) and Susie (Parallel Susie), but weirdly not Tiff, Tuff, Bandana Dee and Robobot Armor. It's just odd, and there were those people who were begging for answers.
And unlike most interpretations, the Mirror World reflects someone's greatest desires rather than their worst sides... or at least that's what it was supposed to be for at least the main trio's copies, if it weren't for Dark Mind somewhat muddling everything away. For example, Shadow Kirby represents Kirby's internal wish to be free from the world constantly turning him into a spanner in the works of whatever threat was coming at the time, as well as a wish to have better innocence and a nicer childhood, but thanks to events of Amazing Mirror, Shadow Kirby lost their innocence and was forced to grow up, becoming more mature faster than Kirby in the process.
The Mirror World tends to be neutral to a lot of conflict. This is because they act mostly pacifistic and peace is near eternal there, in contrast with Dreamland's constant chaos. People there generally do not find interest in causing huge trouble, which is why events of Amazing Mirror was a huge scandal amongst many.
Nowadays, the place is pretty peaceful, and people come and go as they please. New events in the mainland means that there will be some new faces arriving in the Mirror World peacefully around a week later. No, seriously, the people there just ask nicely if they can live here, and they are instantly accepted as long as they don’t try anything horrible.
Where did the copies come from? Who created this world? Why is it created? That's a question no one, not even the smartest brains in the Mirror World, could never answer. Despite so, ironically, the denizens don't really have a problem thinking about their existential crisis or anything, they are grateful for existing the way they are in their own little bubble. And the mainline people, as rowdy as they are, tend to be a good bunch for the most part, so they are content. It’s even still unknown if they have a religion, most of them just live their peace to the fullest.

I did one a while back because of a Kirby RPG idea, but I wanted to do a Kirby gjinka that better fits how I imagine them. For, uh... reasons. That might involve @desultory-novice's Apologies AU (I cry every time I read more of it)
the one on the right is based on how the final abilities feel like they could be magical girl transformations; this one in particular is the Rainbow Sword! There'd be variations for each one- the Star Rod would obviously have stars and galaxy patterns on the cape and hair, the super abilities would take from the original versions of those abilities, and Master would actually have elements of Meta Knight's design- but with the exception of the ones for Kirby 64, Planet Robobot, and Forgotten Land, they'd be fairly similar to this.

On blood magic and the Inquisitor.
I think there is a lot to be said about how Inquisition handles the topic of blood magic, with regard to the Inquisitor and Hawke and the mage rebellion, and there are valid criticisms with regard to narrative framing and role-playing limitations.
However I also think that any discussion of blood magic in Inquisition and the available specializations for a mage Inquisitor is very incomplete without acknowledging that necromancy is considered blood magic in the south.
Tevinter, so far as we can tell from what we know, just straight up doesn't consider it blood magic (hence Dorian seeing no contradiction in practicing it while vocally opposing blood magic), and Nevarra seems to get away with not considering it blood magic, despite being nominally under the southern Chantry, for political reasons (and probably also geographic reasons). But anywhere south of that? Necromancy is blood magic. The first two games, set in Ferelden and Kirkwall, strongly associate animating corpses with blood magic. From the southern point of view, this is and has always been blood magic.
A necromancer Inquisitor is a blood mage. Mary Kirby agrees. Companions and advisors react accordingly. Here's a compilation if you're interested in seeing them all, but Josephine's reaction is especially telling. Keeping in mind that Josephine is a seasoned diplomat who is well-traveled, has a multicultural education, and understands the nuances of this situation better than most, she says this:
Outside Nevarra, most people think the Mortalitasi practice death rituals… and sacrifices…
To my ear, it's pretty clear what Josie means here. Because she is a diplomat, she is not coming right out and accusing the Inquisitor of being a blood mage, but let's be real, in this context what else could she possible mean by that ominous "and sacrifices..." She is making it clear to the Inquisitor that they are creating a PR nightmare for her, and goes on to say that she'll be keeping this as quiet as possible.
On the other end of the spectrum we have the reactions from Sera and Blackwall, the most common of your companions. Blackwell openly disapproves of the whole practice. Sera is clearly unnerved personally, but she also says:
It's scary to anyone smart enough to think for a second. You shouldn't be scary. You're the Inquisitor.
As someone who's vocal about the interests of little people, she's also pretty clearly trying to warn the Inquisitor that this is a practice that will alienate common people who are already frightened of magic generally.
From what I could find, it seems Cullen doesn't have a reaction to this specialization, which seems like a real dropped ball! I think that his reaction out of anyone could have really cemented how this practice is viewed in the south. (Edited to add: Cullen does have a line in a war table op where he says, "I can accept that necromancy is not blood magic," with seeming reluctance, but still strongly disapproves of the practice being used on fallen Inquisition soldiers.)
As for why there are no meaningful consequences for this, and why no one says the quiet part out loud, well, I think this comes back to the fact that everyone needs the Inquisitor whether they like them or not, and whatever shady shit they might be doing, not closing the rifts is undoubtedly worse. Not only that, the Inquisition has some major allies among northerners, so while it wouldn't do for the Inquisitor to be known as a blood mage in the south, it also wouldn't do to insult those allies by openly condemning necromancy.
In some ways, it is a shame that this aspect of the Inquisitor's character constrains other characters' reactions to them, to a degree. I think it would be fun to get more heated reactions from your companions for this specialization. But I can see why it's limited by the game's basic premise, as are many things, which is itself a whole other discussion beyond the scope of this post.
Anyway, the Inquisitor can be a blood mage, of a sort! Just a sort where nobody calls them that to their face.

Hot take
Kirby lore is great, but has SO MUCH lost potential
Don't you see the amount of amazing content that could be taken in depth thanks to the lore it has? The most we see of Kirby Lore being utilized in more games than the one it was introduced in is the Dark Matter Trilogy and mere call backs from other games that follow.
Then comes the part where HAL brings more convoluting lore like what we know of the Magolor epilogue, and HAL just doesn't do anything else with it. But I think this is shown better with FL, PR and TD. To this day, Star Allies is the one most discussed regarding Kirby Lore, not only because of Void Termina but also because HAL ACTUALLY made some exposition of Kirby Lore like Hyness' speech and such. Not everyone will be able to see it but at least it's not subtext anymore, just text. Thing that doesn't get seen basically at all with the other games I mentioned
I get the "Use subtext for your story", but you overuse it and you get the most vague lore humanity has ever seen. Sure, in some games and shows it works in their favor thanks to the theming of those stories but Kirby never struck me as one of those, at least in my opinion.
Maybe this is why many artists and writers have made an insane amount of AUs for Kirby trying to give more lore with actual dialogue - compare the amount of exposition heavy AUs Kirby has with the amount of exposition heavy AUs franchises like Mario, Metroid or Zelda have. See the difference?
My point is, Kirby should REALLY do more with its lore instead of leaving some of the most intriguing topics I've seen stagnating and catching dust.

Now more human than fox, Miho has spent a long, long time searching for her person. She arrives by airship to Wellington, one of the jewels of the floating island of New Zealand. Despite her years spent observing humans, she still has a lot to learn about their culture and society. She's made a living so far as a thief, her heightened senses allowing her to easily take advantage of people. She's also seen a lot of the worst of what mankind has to offer. It's only after meeting Juliet, the owner of a small library, and Aspen, an aspiring novelist, that Miho starts to understand what kindness is, and that there's more than just the bad stuff when it comes to people.

I recently found out that “weekend Susie” is a mistranslation and it’s actually called “susie on vacation” in jpn. I’m pretty sure she’s supposed to be Susie in the future like Manager Magolor..any ideas on why shes missing her hairclip and the “Secretary” title she always has in jpn? Susie is so hard to figure out..like how she only smiles three times in the entirety of robobot (once when she takes the program controller and twice when singing the noble haltmann but ONLY when saying the words father in jpn) so I’m curious on what your thoughts are on her (and unfortunately has the worst localization ever…i had to look at the robobot translations from @/kaialone on tumblr) sorry for rambling but shes so interesting to me and it’s a bit sad seeing how a lot of the details she has in characterization never get talked about
Anon...Did you somehow know I've been replaying Robobot in Japanese?! And it's basically strengthened my confirmation that some people - though less than before - are a bit too harsh and/or restrictive in their takes on both Susie and her father.
That said, I do I try to give people room to "safely hate" these fictional characters as, for a lot of people, it may be one of their only ways of processing a gross problem that affects the real world/so much of history that they can't do much about.
But I love the silly/tragic Haltmann family. I'm sympathetic and even semi-defensive towards 'em. Which is why I'm happy to answer any good faith Haltmann asks.
Ahem! Also, before I get into it, I wanted to say that technically "Weekend Susie" vs "Susie on Vacation" is not a mistranslation per se.
What it IS is a localization.
休日 can mean "vacation," yes. When you break down the kanji, literally it is made up of the words "rest day." So it can also be just about any day when you're not working/not at school/not busy.
For most of western civilization (not me because I'm a contractor XD ) the weekends are people's "rest days." To read 休日 as "weekend" might not even be that much of a stretch/localization!
Probably explains the lack of "secretary" title. She's literally not on the clock! As for the hairclip, who can say...? Similar reasons? I know in Susie's case, it's sentimental, though hairpins in Japan often have this association with studiousness/"time to get serious" so removing it is an easy indicator "She's allowing herself time to be silly!"
I do like to imagine that this is a post-canon Susie though. That girl deserves something nice after her trauma...
Anyway, reminder that post-FL, the localizers have been working more closely with the Japanese team to create a more accurate translation for us. I know the wounds from PR's rough translation (and SA's fast-and-loose in weird places one) still hurt, oof, but the Kirby series is getting better about its translations!!
Actually... you know... there's not THAT many cutscenes...
Maybe I will make my own "If they'd hired Dess to translate Planet Robobot" translation of the game? I've already threatened several times to do a full translation of "The Noble Haltmann" with all references/metaphors intact...
But yes! Speaking of how Susie uses her emotions, I was so moved by something in her first meeting with Kirby, I actually wrote about it! And I'm going to share it here, because you might find it interesting~
-
So, I had my eyes peeled for any interesting bits of characterization left behind on the cutting room floor. Immediately, I was amused by how politely Susie talks to Kirby in the beginning. She doesn't really "talk down to him" or insult his intelligence in the slightest. (One could argue that it's a false business politeness, of course. Although she only breaks that in like, the second to last cutscene) Any dismissal of him feels very "company-mandated." (And the company is run by a murderous computer but leaving that aside...)
She gently praises how beautiful the water and the air on this planet is and that's when something... starts to change in her...
Susie gets impossibly sad. And her attitude changes COMPLETELY.
I stopped for a second reading this. "Hold on. What? Why does she lose her cool HERE? Is this some indication that the place she and her dad used to live on was a really poor planet without clean air and drinking water?" And heck, maybe that is the case!
But something else struck me about her line:
"...You don't even know the value of what you have..."
It's not the snooty we-know-better-than-you "misappropriation of resources" that is triggering her. It is having something precious right next to you and you don't even recognize it.
It's about her dad. Right from the beginning.
She can't NOT talk about it. It affects all her actions. Maybe another reason while I feel like it's better to judge Susie on a whole than any one individual action she takes, because (like Magolor, oops oops oops) she is masking her intentions alllll the time.
Also, omg, I know some people are still sensitive about the Mechaknight thing but that is PEAK grim humor in Japanese! It is treated way too cold and business-like in English, imo.
In Japanese, she starts to describe him exactly like she's telling her bestie that she just met the man of her dreams and then the WHAM line: "So, I gave him a full-body modification!"
Yes, it's unhinged. But it's also wonderful. (She's so Eggman-core.)

The Master Sword
All GSA members are given a 'speciality weapon' when they pass a certain hard trial, which was hidden mostly to the public. There were some people who cleared this trial, including Galacta and Meta.
The Master Sword, given as a reward completing said trial above, is Meta Knight's first magical weapon. It looks like a simple sword with a normal blad at first glance, but once anyone picks it up the blade turns into that akin of a gold color, with an aura spiking up from it. While it can be used as a normal sword, Meta Knight soon learns he can cast spells with it as the conductor. In other words, this sword is also a portable wand.
Since the Galaxia is retrieved and Meta was given the responsibility to use and guard it, the Master Sword was rarely used. Once a month, the knight would use the sword to de-rust it and make sure it's in good condition, and even considered passing it over to Kirby in case he becomes a knight. In fact, he brought it as opposed to the Galaxia during events of Amazing Mirror for that once-a-month test before being attacked by a possessed Dark Meta Knight.
While not the most almighty weapon out there, it still counts as a final weapon item when Meta decided that "screw it, I'm leaving this one for Kirby due to my injuries" and tosses the sword into the mirror portal where Kirby was facing Dark Mind. Turns out, Kirby wields it quite well, because he assumed it worked in a similar vein as the Galaxia!
Ever since then, the sword has been left with the Mirror World as an emergency weapon. Almost like one of those 'in case of emergency, break the glass' kind of thing. It became a bit more necessary after events of Triple Deluxe, especially after reports of whatever happens in the main world starts coming in from time to time: if Shadow Kirby isn't using it, it's most likely that Dark Meta Knight is, and both goes to use it as a training device during peace times in case something's going to happen horribly. Yes, even the borb who has a anger management therapy does use it. Under supervision of course, because a very angry borb holding such sword would be ridiculously lethal.
Meta Knight doesn't have any issue with this, the Galaxia was enough for himself and it doesn't hurt to give the Mirror World a helping hand despite him despising the place a bit.
